Sooooo, totally unrelated question (nah, it's not, looking to Faber): What would happen if a beta takes alpha or omega hormones? Would they do anything (like they did with Ef)? Or are betas in this universe a whole other "category" of secondary gender where those hormones kinda just wash through the body without doing much?

It's mostly the latter.

They don't make larentin or ardolphogen, and they don't really have the biology to know what to do with it.

However, that doesn't mean that scientists aren't trying to find ways (for fun, I think) to see if they can get larentin and ardolphogen to influence betas more. The main reason is actually as a fertility treatment! But not to create heats or anything like that.

It's an area of active science though we will learn more about it in Underline the Red! But no, Faber can't just get like, black market larentin and become 'like an omega.' I also don't know if he would, honestly, someone feeling something doesn't mean they need to prove they are that thing to others in a way that satisfies other people. His dysphoria is more around loved ones not knowing because he hasn't told them, and also beta bigotry!

Warning- this is a very petty post, but I think I'm entitled to at least one petty, pissed-off reaction every time I finish a classic novel that hit harder than I expected so take this as my quota for the year.

cyberpsychosis could maybe be so cool if it was people being possessed by some sort of rouge ai,or as part of a corporate conspiracy. like as a planned obsolescence thing where certain parts during production are programmed to make people Do That after a certain point so you have to buy the next new 20,000eddies cannon arms to replace the nearly identical previous model or else you might kill everyone you love and die because your cyberwares "outdated". or untraceable viruses infecting competing corporations cyberware using their rival's customer's livelihoods to sabotage their profits. and maybe any one of those things works in such a way that its designed to detect atypical brain chemistry in a host,and thus triggers more frequently with them to tage advantage of and use those people as a scapegoat and a way to further fear monger against them,and you can uncover that this is the case. or something along those lines. and the more cyberware someone has the more likely it is that they could encounter any of these scenarios. but no it is just #crazy people being too #crazy.

Random ramblings under the cut-felt like going on a weird reflection on Luana's other form's design

The funny thing about Luana’s other form is that for a while I struggled with what it would look like, since it was only really recently (two years ago?) that I decided to make her straight up not human. Tovera’s magic system is heavily based on irl lit on how magic/religion was seen by our ancestors, and so I definitely wanted to go with a black cat motif above all else to hammer in some of the themes of the story. It's the most recognizable animal for magic stuff in the west next to goats and SOMETIMES foxes, and it fits her abilities around hopping between liminal spaces.

But her final form ended up being a mixture of animals that are given importance in Western European (and some African) countries, which ironically makes her look more like a Formorian than a fairy/elfin being after transforming, only looking fairy like when calm/feeling neutral:

It doesn’t help that when I saw Zelda’s Zonai, I was immediately inspired and sketched out a design based mostly on Rauru (LOOSELY) because they had a perfect mixture of human and furry to me, and I wanted to nail that chimeric blend to make her look kinda more cat-like but still "off" in a way…but the Zonai have a weird rabbit/goat motifs slapped into their designs, so it rubbed off on Luana a lot when I intended to omit rabbits from her design altogether.

In the end I don’t mind what I designed though. The fact that she looks like a goat in some ways actually works to her favor, since her primary caregiver in the fairy realm was a Formorian and y’know. Goats and magic go hand in hand in western occultism (AND Formorians are often interpreted as goat-like giant people, no doubt a Christian influence on Irish myth and their role as antagonists to the Tuathe De). The rabbit like look links her to the moon and can kinda come off as being lucky/evading disaster, which balances her black cat motif that pops up in her behavior and how she’s perceived.

But now that I see a fullbody of her...she looks kinda like a bear. Maybe it's just the way she's drawn here? Lol
