We must – and we can – do more to promote women and girl scientists.
On this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we highlight a simple equation: More women and girls in science equals better science.
Women and girls bring diversity to research, expand the pool of science professionals, and provide fresh perspectives to science and technology, benefiting everyone.
There is growing evidence that gender bias in science is leading to worse outcomes, from drug tests that treat the female body as an aberration, to search algorithms that perpetuate bias and discrimination.
Yet in too many places around the world, women and girls’ access to education is limited or denied completely.
As women look to progress in scientific careers, inequalities and discrimination continue to thwart their potential.
Women make up under a third of the workforce across science, technology, engineering, and maths and even less in cutting edge fields. Just one in five professionals working on Artificial Intelligence is a woman.
We must – and we can – do more to promote women and girl scientists:
Through scholarships, internships, and training programmes that provide a platform to succeed.
Through quotas, retention incentives, and mentorship programmes that help women overcome entrenched hurdles and build a career.
And crucially, by affirming women’s rights and breaking down stereotypes, biases, and structural barriers.
We can all do our part to unleash our world’s enormous untapped talent – starting with filling classrooms, laboratories, and boardrooms with women scientists.
United Nations Secretary-Genral on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2023; February 11th.

The formula for a successful tech career in the USA- Alok Kashyap
Tumblr media
Today people know Alok Kashyap as a successful scrum master and an entrepreneur living his dream life, but this dream has been achieved with the continual hustle and the work that I have put in over the years. Imagine a kid coming from a small city in India weaving dreams in the vibrant shade of the tech world in the USA, it seems like a long road to follow. So let me take you on this journey and share the story of a dreamer to a doer, and how I transcended ideas into action, to build a tech career in the USA. Moreover, some insights and understanding on how it may interest you if you want to achieve the same.
Crafting Success: A Blueprint
A solid academic background is essential to establishing a profession, whether in the United States or another nation. Speaking for myself, when I was in my first semester at IIT Delhi I thought of studying abroad and dropped out. I took all the exams to get into a prestigious college outside India like SAT, MIT, etc, and also got selected but as I came from a middle-class family I needed a college offering a scholarship. Finally, Illinois Chicago was offering me 95% scholarship so I decided to go with it. I have since earned a Bachelor of Science (B.S.), in Computer Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology, USA, and a Master of Science (MS), in Information Technology Project Management from DePaul University Jarvis College of Computing and Digital Media.
Professional Development
Many obstacles have been encountered along the way that have molded me into the Alok Kashyap I am today - a version of myself in which I take great pride.
I started my professional career in 2009 as an Intermediate Business & Programmer Analyst. Now, in 2023, after almost fourteen years of continuous learning, and effort, I am employed as a project manager at United Airlines, a testament to my dedication and hard work.
Seek Employer Sponsorship
My strategy was to finish my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the United States. However, other people would rather remain in their native country and finish their educational pursuits there. Employer sponsorship can therefore serve as a means of access for them since numerous tech organizations are willing to sponsor qualified professionals' visas. I'd like to list a few things that they can use to their benefit.
You can apply for a diploma and other specialization courses which are offered by many foreign schools and colleges.
In the final semester, you can also explore internship options to gain hands-on experience and understand real-world applications. Companies often use internships as a pipeline for future full-time hires.
During interviews, discuss your long-term commitment and contribution to the organization.
Develop an online portfolio showcasing your projects, achievements, and skills. This serves as a visual representation of your capabilities for potential employers.
Optimize your LinkedIn profile. Connect with professionals in your field, join relevant groups, and share industry insights. Many recruiters use LinkedIn to find and assess potential candidates.
Engage with professionals and companies on tech platforms. Many tech communities actively share job opportunities and insights.
Understanding the Visa Process
Research Visa Options
I choose to pursue my career in the USA, but I might like to explore other countries as well. And when delving into the realm of opportunities abroad, understanding the variety of possible visa choices is important. Gathering information on the visa options for employment and education empowers individuals to strategically plan their next steps, ensuring they stay abreast of requirements and navigate the application process seamlessly.
Conclusion
Building a tech career in the USA requires a combination of education, continuous learning, networking,  and practical experience. Stay persistent, adapt to industry changes, and leverage the vast resources available in the USA to propel your career forward. Whether you're an aspiring developer, engineer, data scientist, or IT professional, the USA provides an ecosystem that fosters innovation and growth.
The tech industry is dynamic, and with dedication and strategic planning, you can unlock a world of possibilities in the ever-evolving landscape of technology. I hope these insights are the compass guiding your tech aspirations.

MITdesignX in Dubai
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/mitdesignx-in-dubai/
MITdesignX in Dubai
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MIT has nurtured and celebrated its entrepreneurial culture for decades, with programs and courses supporting innovative startups. MITdesignX — the venture accelerator founded in 2016 in the School of Architecture and Planning (SA+P) and now part of the MIT Morningside Academy for Design — has extended that ethos across the globe.
Over the past four years, SA+P faculty have led venture-building workshops in Reykjavik, Iceland and Venice, Italy, along with academic programs and ideation sessions in Mexico City and Hong Kong. Collaborating with MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives (MISTI) — the Institute’s hub for global education based in the Center for International Studies — MITdesignX recently completed its first program in Dubai.
The MITdesignX Dubai accelerator (MDXB), facilitated by MIT faculty and staff, works with early-stage ventures from across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, offering a framework for these startups to move toward their commercial aims, engage with one another, and gain added value from hosting MIT interns.
It’s a new and exciting frontier for an accelerator that works with startups primarily focused on sustainability. In Dubai, the call for applications to participate specified the topic of “Sustainable Growth of Urban Environments.”
“We unite each of our international cohorts behind themes that are connected and important to SA+P and the world,” says Gilad Rosenzweig, executive director of MITdesignX. “We are aware of the incredible growth of cities, especially in developing nations, and that growth must be done sustainably for the sake of the environment and the people who will live in them. Each team in Dubai had to identify an important problem with the way we build, consume, supply, move, or live in cities, have a feasible solution for it, and propose a viable business opportunity to effectively deploy the solution.” David Dolev, associate director of MISTI and managing director of MISTI’s programs in the MENA region, has been cultivating relationships in Dubai for several years while searching for the right opportunity to involve MITdesignX. For Dolev, key requirements exist for a program to be a good match abroad for the Institute.
“We’re always looking for ways to bring MIT’s ’mind and hand’ methodology around the world to make an impact,” says Dolev. “We also have the capacity to bring people together who might not have this opportunity without MIT’s engagement. Our core mission at MISTI is to offer our students the chance to develop a deeper understanding of countries and cultures so that they can take one step forward on their path to becoming the global leaders that the world deeply needs.”
Taking the program to another level
MDXB received more than 100 applications, from which 12 teams were selected to join the program in November 2023. MIT, with international entrepreneurship development company Global Growth Hub, engaged the Dubai Integrated Economic Zones Authority, a quasi-governmental organization with large development parks across the city, to provide program funding for the workshops and internships, 24-hour workspace, access to labs and industry collaborators, and local support for the teams. MDXB was housed in the Dubai Silicon Oasis Park at the rapidly developing eastern edge of the city.
On campus, MITdesignX works with students, faculty, and research staff at the early-stage development of their ventures over a five-month span that includes two academic courses. Abroad, the program has different scope and cadence, with early-to-mid-stage venture teams required to work full time for three to four months. Rosenzweig, together with MITdesignX faculty director Svafa Gronfeldt, Monique Fuchs, Yscaira Jimenez, and other instructors, conduct two day-long workshops every three to four weeks.
Rosenzweig says that the Dubai cohort was unique in its diversity: in addition to the United Arab Emirates, there were participants from Egypt, India, Jordan, Israel, Palestinian territories, the U.K., and even Norway.
“It was amazing to have this group working together and supporting each other in the midst of another cycle of war and violence in the Middle East,” says Rosenzweig. “Through MISTI and MITdesignX, we’re working beyond and through borders as a collection of entrepreneurs, students, and change-makers to truly build a better world.”
In addition to the MIT-designed curriculum, one MIT student was embedded with each team during January’s Independent Activity Period (IAP). For Dolev, this was a win-win for MIT students and the Dubai cohort.
“These entrepreneurs were very excited to have our students working with them,” he says. “The students brought a concrete tech background and that fresh, cutting-edge student mind.”
Interest from students who applied for the IAP opportunity was overwhelming. Says Dolev, “It’s not a secret that sustainability and climate change are among the most important things the world is dealing with today. It doesn’t matter what our students are studying; they all care about the climate.”
Nicolas Stone Perez, a junior double majoring in computer science/economics/data science and management, was among the 12 students who spent IAP in Dubai. He found Dubai to be “a beautiful blend of cultures.” Stone Perez worked with Fuse AE, a startup that is looking to convert fleets of fuel vehicles to electric. He says he was impressed with the technical background for cars and passion for sustainability exhibited by its co-founders.
“Something I took away was feeling empowered and confident that I can do good work elsewhere in the world with people from different backgrounds and cultures,” says Stone Perez. “That’s something I didn’t expect to gain coming into the program.”
Stone Perez’s prior MISTI experiences have been solo, so the opportunity to encounter a foreign country with other MIT students offered “bonding experiences” he welcomed. On weekends the students explored the city, took part in alumni events, toured the desert on camels, and visited other countries in the region.
An experience that stands out for Stone Perez’s fellow intern, Andrea Aude, was riding bicycles in the desert where an Arabian oryx stepped onto the path. Captivated by their history of near extinction and recent resurgence in the Arabian desert, Aude delighted to see the bright white bovid.
The MIT senior majoring in chemical engineering interned with Othalo, a company that upcycles plastic waste into affordable housing building systems using recycled plastic materials as a feedstock to manufacture modular building systems.
“What pulled me to this opportunity was the chance to work at a startup that specifically has an impact in sustainability and experience the work culture in a different country,” she says.
She found the work environment in Dubai to be much less structured than in the United States.
“In the U.S., it’s very much go, go, go, and very formal,” she says. “In Dubai, we would have work meetings over tea and conversations that were more personal. I really appreciated that. It made me wonder about other cultures and how they manage work environments and what we could incorporate in our work environments here.”
Like Perez, Aude says working for her startup was inspiring and increased her desire to explore entrepreneurial opportunities following graduate study.
“I’m very interested in bringing technology to scale,” says Aude, who will begin doctorate work in chemical engineering at Princeton University this fall. “I think this is how you change the world. You commercialize your technology.”
Up next
Reflecting on the dozen companies in the first MDXB cohort, Rosenzweig says that each made changes to their project or business model and are in a better position to go to market and raise money. Applications for the second cohort will be announced this summer, with an expanded theme to include agritech solutions. Dubai’s growing startup ecosystem, as well as its central location with quick access to Southeast Asia, Africa, and Europe, makes it a prime spot to attract international entrepreneurs.
Dolev also sees MISTI’s first engagement in the UAE as a success.
“The demand for this type of program is only going to grow. Both our MIT students and many global investors want to engage with impact-driven ventures — something that this accelerator is really bringing both to the region and to our MIT community. I hope that this MISTI-designX proof of concept is something that we can replicate across the region and the world.”

ESG Trends Shaping the Bakery Product Industry
Embedding the value of environmental, social and governance (ESG) in the bakery product industry has become a vital cog in augmenting revenue growth and bolstering employee productivity. A strong ESG performance can help industry leaders tap into new markets and attract customers to pay more. That said, status brings responsibility and challenges—air pollution and waste from bakery manufacturing have become pervasive. Oven produces volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including ethanol, while food waste in the landfill releases methane, aggravating global warming. Amidst criticism, buoyant ESG policies could be the silver lining. In 2023, the U.K. Environmental Act 2021 came into full effect, which fosters the U.K. government’s commitment to eliminate food waste in landfill by 2030.
The food industry has an overarching impact on the planet, society and governance. Reduction of ecological footprint has become instrumental in underpinning the sustainability profile. One of the most rapidly rising segments in the bakery industry is that which offers sustainably raised products. Besides, robust ESG policies can help deal fairly and ethically with stakeholders, deliver value to customers, reinforce communities and provide value for shareholders.
An increasing chorus of stakeholders has pushed for publishing sustainability/ESG reports and fostering transparency and ethical standards. In the same breath, questions arise:
1. Which ESG issues have garnered headlines among forward-looking companies?  2. Are companies ramping up efforts to underpin employee safety, reduce carbon footprint and accentuate transparency?
Kraft Food Bolsters Environmental Stewardship
Climate risks have posed risks as the increasing number of days with extreme heat has led to reduced productivity. Moreover, changing rainfall patterns and scorching heat have triggered wildfires, disrupting economies and killing citizens. ESG goals, including minimizing waste, reducing GHG emissions and making sustainable packaging, have become invaluable to stay ahead of the curve. Kraft Heinz has set an audacious goal of a 20% reduction in waste-to-landfill intensity across manufacturing facilities by 2025.
In 2021, the American food manufacturing company pledged to attain Net-Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Kraft Heinz collaborated with seven companies in Canada to minimize food waste by 50% by 2025. The company will emphasize regenerative and sustainable practices, procure most electricity from renewable sources and shift to more circular and recyclable packaging. It will also further its efforts to propel scope 3 emission minimization strategies across ingredients, upstream and downstream transportation, packaging, end-of-life and sold products.

Bimbo Bakeries Gains from DEI Initiatives
Stakeholders’ actions on social factors, including conditions employees work under, pay parity and diversity, equity & inclusion, can notably impact shareholders’ returns. Bimbo Bakeries is gearing up to ensure 50% diverse candidate slates—at least 25% racially diverse and a minimum of 25% women; the company laid down the goals to be achieved from 2022 to 2024. The company also requires associates to complete at least 1.5 hours of Racial Equity Strategy Training (REST) annually.
It has established the 2030 ambition to bolster underserved communities, emphasizing economics, education and health assistance. In 2021, Bimbo Bakeries USA (BBU) committed USD 1 million to national and local organizations to propel the financial well-being, education and health of Black and minority Americans. The company provides scholarships and internships through collaboration with the United Negro College Fund.
The reputation of companies largely depends upon their social credibility. In 2020, BBU donated half a million dollars to the COVID-19 Relief Fun of Feeding America. The company donates around 20 million pounds of food to local food banks annually (collaborated with Feeding America). Across the U.S., the bakery firm chooses ten food banks to receive a donation of 5,000 pounds of bread. The prevalence of a safe and inclusive working environment, along with economic assistance, will add value to ESG goals.
Transparency Pivotal for General Mills to Create Synergy
The financial impact is largely driven by the impact the firm has on the environment and society. In the realm of ESG factors, investors, managers, communities, employees and suppliers have furthered governance pillar to adhere to the law, make effective decisions and keep up with the demand of stakeholders. Consumers are eager to know what is in their bakery products, how they are prepared and where they came from.
General Mills has fostered ingredient sourcing by disclosing information about purchasing Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certified palm oil volumes. The website also includes an updated list of all palm oil suppliers. As of 2022, the company has listed around 1,900 products on smartlabel.org, 319 topics were covered on askgeneralmills.com and 600 products were enrolled in the U.S. Non-GMO Project, according to its 2023 Global Responsibility Report.
A strong ESG proposition warrants the assessment of climate-related risks, opportunities; relationships with the society they do business; and investments in corporate governance that encapsulate firms’ long-term success. Grand View Research indicates that the global bakery products market size could reach USD 251.1 billion by 2025. The billion-dollar industry will emphasize ESG reporting to undergird sustainable bakeries.

How Students Benefit from NSLS Membership
Tumblr media
Founded in 2001 by Gary Tuerack to motivate and better prepare students for success upon graduation, the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) has since expanded to all 50 states and has reached more than 1.5 million students. There are more than 800 chapters at post-secondary institutions throughout the United States, each of which provides students with the tools and resources to establish real-world skills and become leaders in their chosen fields.
The NSLS believes in the power of experiential leadership education and offers programs that help members build resiliency, think critically, be empathetic to others, and develop a core purpose. Through its Foundations of Leadership five-step curriculum, students learn valuable problem-solving and communication skills, as well as how to foster personal responsibility and collaborate with others. The NSLS also offers Advanced and Executive Leadership Certification.
The curriculum for Advanced Leadership Certification focuses on the value of effective communication in mutual relationships. Students must complete advanced online leadership modules, attend Speaker Broadcast events, perform community service, and lead a Success Networking Team. As part of the Executive Leadership Certification program, students must apply their leadership knowledge in real-world situations, including through the Better World capstone project, in which they have to leverage their training to improve their community.
Mentorship is among the key benefits for NSLS members. Students can enhance their communication and leadership skills via one-on-one mentorship with professional success coaches and become more comfortable setting and achieving goals while being held accountable by NSLS peers and mentors. They can also learn their own and other leadership styles by completing a communication assessment tool.
NSLS membership also looks good on a resume, helping students stand out from their peers and perhaps gain access to exclusive jobs and internships. Members receive a personalized letter of recommendation that they can forward to admissions offices and prospective employers, and they have access to an online interview series with insight from career experts. They can also expand upon their skills by working in various leadership positions with local, regional, and national NSLS offices.
The NSLS Speaker Broadcasts are among the most valuable resources to members. Every year, several guest speakers, usually leaders in various fields, share personal insight into their leadership efforts in business and society. Students can submit questions in advance. Each interactive session includes trivia and live polls and is recorded so members can watch at a later date. Actor, bodybuilder, and former politician Arnold Schwarzenegger, organizational psychologist Adam Grant, and behavioral scientist Emily Balcetis were featured guests during the 2023-24 school year. Past guests include presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and entertainers and personalities Kevin Hart, Kelly Ripa, Gabrielle Union, and Jamie Foxx.
NSLS members also have access to a variety of scholarships and awards, the largest of which are $7,500. The organization distributes more than $400,000 in scholarships and awards each year for tuition, educational assistance, and community service.
NSLS membership is invitation-only. Prospective undergraduate members must have completed at least 36 credit hours and have a GPA of 3.2, while graduate students have to complete at least 18 credits and have a GPA of at least 3.5. Invitations are mailed early in the fall and winter semesters.

IPG Drives South Africa's Just Energy Transition
Tumblr media
South Africa is making significant strides in its Just Energy Transition, and the International Partners Group (IPG) is at the forefront of this transformation. In this article, we explore the highlights of the recent developments and IPG's pivotal contribution to South Africa's clean energy journey.
The Road to a Green Future
Green Initiatives on the Rise In the wake of COP26 in November 2022, South Africa embarked on a journey towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future. This transition, known as the Just Energy Transition (JET), has garnered substantial support from various international partners. Notably, Denmark and the Netherlands joined the International Partners Group (IPG) to bolster the JET Partnership (JETP). The commitment to JET is evident through pledges amounting to a staggering $11.6 billion, with $9.3 billion of it originating from the IPG. These funds are making a tangible impact, fueling reskilling initiatives and economic diversification projects in Mpumalanga. As a result, South Africa is witnessing a significant expansion in private-sector renewable energy adoption, creating a plethora of employment opportunities.
Green Initiatives on the Rise
One of the standout achievements of JET is the acceleration of investment in electric vehicles, green hydrogen, and transmission finance. These areas are critical for South Africa's sustainable energy future and are gaining much-needed attention and investment. South Africa's persistent electricity supply crisis prompted a strategic re-evaluation of coal power plant decommissioning schedules to ensure energy security. Consequently, the government has decided to fast-track the repowering and repurposing of retiring power plants. This move aligns with JET's goal of achieving ambitious targets within South Africa's Nationally Determined Contribution range.
The JET Implementation Plan Unveiled
The Presidential Climate Commission conducted extensive stakeholder consultations in early 2023 to formulate the JET Implementation Plan (IP). This comprehensive plan outlines South Africa's six defined JET portfolios for investment: - Electricity - Mpumalanga just transition - New energy vehicles - Green hydrogen - Skills - Municipalities The IP not only summarizes the current financial status but also provides insights into the progress of each portfolio. It elucidates theories of change, sets up collaborative structures, and prioritizes specific programs, making it a vital tool for the successful execution of JET. The JET Projects Register, published by the JET Project Management Unit (PMU), records grants from JET partners. This register, updated quarterly in collaboration with the IPG, aims to enhance transparency and efficiency. Moreover, the PMU is establishing a JET Funding Platform, facilitating the matchmaking of grant providers and projects.
Powering the Green Revolution
Energy reforms in South Africa are progressing steadily. The Electricity Regulation Act Amendment Bill, currently in the committee stage, will promote competition in the energy market. Removing the licensing threshold for generation facilities has paved the way for a 66GW pipeline of renewable energy projects. IPG development finance institutions have actively participated in battery storage tenders, potentially adding 2GW of storage capacity for Eskom. The IPG's support for independent power plant development and wind energy internships is driving the transition towards greener energy sources.
Bridging the Transmission Gap
South Africa's renewable energy generation hubs, predominantly in the Northern, Western, and Eastern Cape provinces, require substantial investment in transmission networks. The government is exploring models for private investment in transmission, with the IPG actively engaging in this initiative. The aim is to secure over $16 billion in financing for transmission before 2030.
Green Hydrogen and New Energy Vehicles
The Netherlands has committed €50 million towards a green hydrogen blended finance fund, while South Africa is reviewing incentives for electric vehicles (EVs). The Electric Vehicles White Paper, approved by the South African Cabinet, paves the way for the manufacturing and adoption of new energy vehicles and batteries.
Embracing the Just Transition
Recognizing the importance of community engagement, JET partners are committed to delivering projects that benefit local communities. At least 20% of funding is allocated to Just projects, focusing on economic and community development in Mpumalanga. The IPG's involvement extends to supporting skills development, financing start-ups, and scoping regeneration projects in partnership with Mpumalanga municipalities. Maps and guidance on land use are provided, and discussions about a blended finance fund for small to medium-sized enterprises are underway.
IPG's Expanding Role
The inclusion of the Netherlands and Denmark in the IPG signifies their confidence in South Africa's JET efforts. The original IPG members have increased their grant offer by 57%, and the overall grant funding has surged by 132% since COP26. IPG and other funders have collectively committed $11.7 billion to JET, including a €200 million loan from the European Investment Bank for renewable energy projects. These investments reflect a strong commitment to South Africa's clean energy transition.
A Bright Future Ahead
While South Africa's energy challenges may delay coal-fired power plant decommissioning, the focus remains on repurposing, repowering, and community development at these sites. The private sector's rapid investment in off-grid renewables underscores the urgency of transitioning to cleaner energy sources for the country's long-term economic prosperity. The JET Implementation Plan provides a roadmap for the future, with an array of initiatives to accelerate South Africa's green transition. The IPG's dedication to financing solutions, community development, and policy implementation ensures that South Africa is on the path to a sustainable and prosperous energy future.   Sources: THX News & British High Commission Pretoria. Use College Navigator 2023 to organise your further education || Neodrafts
Choosing the best college from a bevy of colleges may seem overwhelming, but College Navigator can help in narrowing down your choices.
Planning for higher education is crucial and important for every aspiring college student. We also know that when you are planning your higher education in another state or country, it can be overwhelming and needs meticulous research. There are over 2000 colleges in the USA and preparing for higher education can be a daunting task.
Why Is College Search So Important?
Often, our college choice can be a crucial factor in deciding one’s future career goals. The race to get into an Ivy League or top US colleges may seem a daunting task and exhausts; finding a good college is not everyone’s cup of tea.
High school students face many dilemmas while deciding on a particular college, and as a result, they end up getting more confused than ever. The reason being, as a student or a parent, you have to consider a lot of factors— if the college offers the major you want to go for, extra-curricular activities, internship opportunities, sports, and club culture, and the list goes on. After spring break, high school students start attending college fairs, skimming brochures, practicing for SAT’s and more. However, other factors can also impact your decision.
Career plans are better made with proper guidance, and College Navigator is one such platform to simplify your college search.
How Can College Navigator Help In Your College Search?
It is a free consumer tool for college search offered by the United States of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics. College Navigator information contains data on institutions and their proposed programs, retention and graduation rates, availability of assistance, costs, degrees awarded, student loans defaults, campus safety, and accreditation.
The tool is a comprehensive directory with all the latest information and helps you evaluate the colleges receiving Title IV funds. What are Title IV Funds? Title IV funds refer to federal student aid funds provided by the U.S. Department of Education under the federal student aid programs.
We have explained the benefits of using this platform for the college search in detail. Let’s study in detail how this search tool can help you find the best fit.
Expert Tips You Should Know For College Applications
Know-How Digital Platforms Work: We live in a fast-paced world where everyone uses online websites and platforms to make their lives easier. Although convenient, sometimes it can be confusing because of hundreds of available sites for a single Google search. Hence, it can help you a great deal and if you are specific with your search terms when researching online. Know your interest subjects, extracurricular activities, and the kind of job you want to have in the future well in advance before heading online for finding your dream college.
Create a List: Randomly searching too many sites online will give no proper outcome. You will end up forgetting the relevant information that you might have come across. It’s better to jot down all appropriate information and create your reference list. Based on your career goals, find out what all legitimate college finding platforms are available online before going with any of them.
Look for Educational Blogs: You can look for relevant blogs to gather information. Many sites can give you a list of all the popular online platforms to help you in your online search. You can search, for instance, “top online platforms to find the right college,” and you can get a list of some of the renowned online platforms to ease your college search.
Keep these important yet simple tips in mind for selecting the right college fit for yourself using digital media. Getting into the best colleges and universities in the US is a dream for most aspiring students and entrepreneurs. So, when you make your choice, make sure you are well prepared before you start to apply.
How Can You Search Colleges on College Navigator?
On College Navigator, you can set filters according to the preferred location, sports teams, and other criteria to find the best fit. You can also specify the state of residence and tuition costs and in-state versus out-of-state tuition would also be taken into account by the tool.
How Can Students Benefit From College Navigator?
College applications can be tricky and needs thorough research. Whether you are a parent of a high school student or a student yourself, researching through a vast list of college options and courses may confuse you. This crucial decision may be tedious, but you can trust College Navigator to simplify your search.
You can export your search results into a spreadsheet.
Also, you can refine your search with the help of additional search features.
Further, you can also save your session including search options and favorites.
Apart from narrowing down the list of best colleges, it also helps you stay connected with your selected college’s admission processes. Let’s look into the other benefits the tool provides:
Costs Calculator and Estimator
The tool helps estimate student expenditures, including tuition, books, supplies, and room and board for each college. You also get the net attendance price and links to the calculator of each school.
Financial Help
College Navigator records details like the financial aid awards from each college. Further, it sorts them into categories such as the number of school students receiving aid and the total amount of aid earned.
Default Rates of Student Loan
You can see the data if the students at a school are repaying their student loans. If so many are in default, it’s a warning that the school will not prepare them adequately for growth after graduation
Graduation Rate
The data is displayed on color-coded graphs that make it much easier to grasp how students are attending school and graduating.
Compare Your Favourite School
A comparison of two or more always helps to find the best. Using this tool, you can add your favourite colleges and universities in the “My Favorites” tab. You can compare the schools added in this tab and export the results into a spreadsheet.
Since you are acquainted with College Navigator’s benefits, let’s focus on another crucial question that equally impacts college search decisions:
What Type of College is Best for Your Interest?
You have various types of colleges to choose from after graduating from high school:
Four-Year Bachelor Degree Colleges or Universities
Both the institutions, colleges and universities, award Bachelor’s degrees. A four-year college focuses mainly on undergraduate education and provides a range of degrees in a particular specialized field; a four-year university is greater in size, and usually offers undergraduate, advanced, and graduate degrees.
There are various colleges and universities under both private and public administration. State provides financial support to public colleges and universities. These public institutions are larger and less costly than private colleges in general. On the flip side, private universities and colleges are financed by tuition and donations and are smaller and more expensive in general.
Vocational and Technical Training Schools
The vocational or technical school programs’ duration differs and can be anywhere between six months to three years. Institutions that offer vocational and technical training are often privately owned. In these courses, students learn the skills required to get jobs in a particular field or sector.
Senior Military Colleges and Service Academies
SMCs or Senior Military Colleges and Service academies provide special military instruction along with traditional academic subjects. The competition level to get into such institutions are always often high.
Eligible students get financial assistance from these institutions like the Service academies provide full four-year scholarships, whereas the SMCs offer financial-aid packages. These institutions offer some other allowances too like for books, medical and dental care and board. In return, the recipient students are required to serve a minimum of five years of obligated commissioned service after completing the course.
Community and Junior Colleges
Community and junior colleges are best fit for students who are unwilling to pursue a four-year degree or for students who want to qualify for a career or enhance their resume. These colleges offer a wide range of two-year associate degree programs that are usually less expensive than four-year school programs.
The admission criteria in these institutions are also less stringent. You can join the workforce right after completing these programs.  Likewise, you can also head ahead for a four-year school for a bachelor’s degree.
Distance/Online Learning
Traditional colleges run specific programs that encourage students to complete a degree while not physically attending the school through distance learning. There are various distance-learning services on the Internet too. Students who want to get their degrees and need to work and manage their schedules, distance learning services are the best.
The internet has simplified the process of gaining the right information without much hassle. By making use of the right platforms, prospective students can enhance their college search and narrow down their choices. So what are you waiting for? Plan for your future using College Navigator.

Is humanity alone in the Universe? Is anyone out there? Where is everybody? And what happens if and when we make contact with them? These and other questions were the subjects of the 2023 Penn State SETI Symposium hosted by the Penn State Extraterrestrial Intelligence Center (PSETI) from June 19th-22nd, 2023. The event featured prominent speakers from various research fields and disciplines discussing the challenges, history, and future of SETI. In the great tradition established by Dr. Frank Drake, they also addressed key issues related to the search for intelligent life and what we might find someday. The summit opened with a series of overviews, a review of the past year (since the last summit), and a presentation by Dr. Rebecca Charbonneau, a science historian and Jansky Fellow at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO). Her presentation, titled “Frank Drake and his Place in History,” provided a retrospective on the life and accomplishments of famed radio astronomer and SETI pioneer Dr. Frank Drake (for whom the Drake Equation is named), how he altered the character of the field, and how history will remember him. The PSETI Center actively collaborates with other institutions, including the Breakthrough Listen Laboratory at the Berkeley SETI Research Center and the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California. While originally inspired by the NASA Technosignature Workshop held in 2018 (which many members of the PSETI Center attended), the first SETI Summit did not occur until 2022 due to the COVID pandemic. This year marked the second annual summit and included Plenary Sessions in which experts discussed the history of SETI and its contributors, Breakout Sessions that addressed ethical issues, and results from some of the latest searches for technosignatures, panel discussions, and Q&A sessions. The Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico and infographic of the Arecibo Message (left). Credit: Seth Shostak/SETI Institute/Associated Press A Pioneer On September 2nd, 2022, r Dr. Frank Donald Drake passed away at the age of 92. Drake is perhaps best known for his probabilistic argument that calculates the number of extraterrestrial civilizations (ETCs) that humanity could communicate with – the Drake Equation. But his contributions to science and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) go far beyond that. In addition to mounting the first-ever SETI experiment (Project Ozma), he was integral to the most important attempt to Message Extraterrestrial Intelligence (METI) – the Arecibo Message. In honor of Drake, Dr. Rebecca Charbonneau – a science historian and Jansky Fellow at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory – delivered a lecture at the recent Penn State SETI Symposium. The lecture, titled “Frank Drake and his Place in History,” focused on Drake’s life, accomplishments, his place in history, and how future generations will remember him. One thing she highlighted, which she knew from personal experience, was the man’s kindness. This impression only deepened upon reviewing the NRAOs archives, which provided multiple examples and his warmth and friendly nature. As she indicated, they also revealed that Drake was an early champion for women in science: “At NRAO, we have a summer student program. It includes things like an NSF-funded REU experience, but also undergraduate and graduate internships. And this has been happening since 1960, so it’s probably one of the oldest astronomy student programs in the United States. Frank was the first summer student program coordinator at NRAO in 1960, and he actually advocated for women being allowed to participate in the first ever class of summer students. He was highly and strongly discouraged by the [NRAO] deputy director at the time. He was told that it was a ‘waste of our funds to have summer students in the program who are women,’ because we would just get pregnant and not go into the field and do anything. And Frank pushed back against it.” And, as Dr. Charbonneau said, two of his first students – Elen Gunderson and Margaret Hurley – assisted Dr. Drake with organizing Project Ozma, demonstrating the valuable contributions of women in science. Another major issue Dr. Charbonneau addressed was the title often attributed to Drake – the “Father of SETI” – even though he was not the first scientist to search for evidence of intelligent life in the cosmos. Frank Drake by the Green Bank Telescope. Credit: NRAO/NSF/AUI “Father of SETI” Whereas Project Ozma is often credited as being the first SETI project (and Drake the first SETI scientist), there were historical antecedents to this experiment that are often overlooked. At the heart of it, said Charbonneau, lies the problem of definitions and qualifiers, which do not clarify the issue one bit: “People have been thinking about extraterrestrial inelligence for millennia, as early as the Greek atomists wodnering about the ‘plurality of worlds.’ And so, one might be tempted to say ‘Okay, well SETI is when we first started actually looking. And Project Ozma is the first SETI project.’ But that’s not quite right either, because if you go through the historical record, there are a number of cases where you an find people who made (*what I call) ‘search attempts’ – or, at least, search proposals.” The examples Charbonneau cited included 19th-century mathematician Karl Gauss’, who proposed creating a giant petroglyph of the Pythagorean Theorem that he believed would be visible to intelligent beings living on the Moon. There were also the experiments of early radio pioneers like Guglielmo Marconi, Thomas Edison, and Nikolai Tesla, who reported detecting signals with their wireless telegraphy equipment – which they believed were from Mars or outer space – and recommended using emerging radio technology for interplanetary communication. Then there were Percival Lowell’s telescopic observations of Mars in the late-19th and early-20th centuries in search of “canals” and other indications of an advanced civilization. And there was the “National Radio Silence Day” campaign led by American astronomer David Peck Todd and the U.S. Naval Observatory in August of 1924. Coinciding with a Mars Opposition that brought the two planets to the closest they’d been in a century, people were encouraged to turn off their radios for five minutes on the hour, every hour, for three days (August 21st to 23rd) so Todd and his colleagues could “listen” for signals from Mars with a dirigible-mounted radio receiver. But in the end, said Charbonneau, Project Ozma still “feels” like it was the first SETI experiment because it shifted the character of the science. She argued that it comes down not to a change in ideas or tools but timing, as it happened during the Cold War and the early days of the Space Race. “This was a moment in time where there was a great public consciousness about space, and it was the first moment in space when there were the first artificial signals in space,” she said. The events of this period – the first satellites to space, the development of intercontinental ballistic missiles, and efforts to send the first humans into orbit – fundamentally altered the nature of what the scientific community and general public were interested in. Hopes for achieving some of the greatest dreams of humanity (setting foot on another celestial body) intermingled with fears of nuclear annihilation. The Drake Equation, a mathematical formula for the probability of finding life or advanced civilizations in the Universe. Credit: University of Rochester Longevity of Our Civilization Furthermore, Charbonneau posited that Frank’s greatest contribution was not Project Ozma but the Drake Equation. To recap, the Equation states that the number of civilizations in the Milky Way that humanity can communicate with (N) comes down to the rate of star formation in our galaxy (R*), the fraction of those stars with planetary systems (fp), the fraction of those planets that are habitable (ne), the fraction of planets where life will emerge (fe), the fraction of planets that will develop intelligent life (fi), the fraction of civilizations that will develop transmission technology (fc), the length of time these civilizations will transmit signals to space (L). Mathematically, the Equation is expressed as follows: N = R* x fp x ne x fe x fi x fc x L What is particularly special about the Drake Equation, said Charbonneau, is that it changed the character of how we think about extraterrestrial life and the existence of our species and planet. Once again, this resulted from living in an age when nuclear annihilation was not just considered a possibility but a constant threat. In this respect, she claims that the most significant part of the Drake Equation is the variable that expresses the longevity of civilizations (L) as a measure of their detectability: “Suddenly, with the development of the atom bomb and the Cold War, we were for the first time capable of not just destroying our civilization. This is not about the Fall of Rome, this is about the end of our entire species, and indeed, perhaps our enire planet. And because of that, L is what really changed he character of how we think about SETI. And I think that Frank agreed with that.” There is certainly a case to be made for this. As we explored in a previous article, it has been suggested that humanity has not heard from any extraterrestrial civilizations (the Fermi Paradox) because they are all dead. A slight variation on this theory is The Brief Window Hypothesis, which asserts that communicating with an ETC is a matter of timing, and if we’re not in the right window, we will miss their transmissions. There’s also the Great Filter Hypothesis, which contends that something in the cosmos could prevent life from reaching an advanced stage of development (the point where their presence and activities would be noticed). This “filter” could be anything from natural causes (flare activity, gamma-ray bursts, etc.) to intelligent life being prone to self-destruction (nuclear war, ecological damage, etc.). When examined through the lens of history, it becomes apparent that SETI is very much influenced by the time period in which it takes place. By conducting his pioneering work in the early 1960s and adopting an approach that appreciated the complexity of searching for evidence of intelligent life, Drake helped establish frameworks and practices still in use to this day. The SETI Institute is hosting a series of workshops as part of the A Sign in Space project. Credit: SETI Institute The “Comic Mirror” As a final note, Charbonneau addressed the nature of SETI and a common cliche that is often raised. This is known as the “Cosmic Mirror,” which essentially states that the field of SETI tells us more about our civilization than it does about extraterrestrials. While this claim is arguable, given that humanity is the only technologically-dependent civilization we know of, Charbonneau characterized it as “a bit hoaky,” likening it instead to a “prism.” This is especially true where Project Ozma, the Arecibo Message, and the legacy of Frank Drake are concerned. As Charbonneau illustrated, the earliest experiments were plagued by examples of projection and mirroring. This included Marconi’s belief that he could talk to Martian in Morse Code using his telegraph, as it was the established means of communicating at a distance in his time. Percival Lowell’s search for major infrastructure on Mars was similar in that it coincided with the U.S. digging of the Panama Canal in Latin America while the British had finished work on the Suez Canal a few decades prior. In both instances, they were looking for signatures that reflected what they saw going on in the world at the time. Frank, in contrast, was “refracting” our world onto extraterrestrial civilizations. In the process, he changed how people imagine our planet’s future (and those of potential extraterrestrial civilizations) in a way that highlighted our hopes and fears. And that, said Charbonneau, is a very powerful tool that we are still discussing, debating, and writing about today: “What are we talking about at this conference? Artificial intelligence, pollution SETI, atmospheric technosignatures. Our present concerns are showing up again in our ideas and the Drake Equation, L – the medium through which our ideas are passing through – affect the character of our search. And so I think that that is Frank Drake’s legacy. I think that he is a fantastic innovator, and I think that he has radically shifted the way think not only about worlds out there, but our own.” Check out the 2023 Penn State SETI Symposium homepage and click on the Agenda option to access videos and abstracts of the many presentations.
