Sartorial visit Seoul Part II
Tumblr media
Part II of my trip is Seoul. I did a intercity trip by flying from Taipei to Seoul. From a sub 10 degree winter city to a below 0 degree city. Of course we lugged a lot of winter wear along with us. Picture can't did justification to the coldness!
Enough of that... More on Seoul. This is the highlight of my trip, I visited a lot of sartorial stores, tried on a different shoe maker with different last to find out my sizing, commissioning a jacket (yes!!) and got myself a handmade one piece collar with shirring. I will say I spend a lot more in Seoul than Taipei! : )
On the second day when my wife and friend are out for a hair appointment, I spring into action immediately. I have already prepared a list of the sartorial stores I wanted to visit back at home. First up is Zimmermann and Kim. I'm sure a lot of you guys have heard of them. They carry shoe makers like Saint Crispin, Gazanio and Girling aka G&G and Vass, though I heard they no longer sell Vass but I still saw some of their ex stock on display over there.
I planned my route by taking a cab there cause the 2nd destination is nearby. Upon walking up the staircase on the 2nd floor, I know I have reached my destination with their store name promptly pasted on the glass door.
Tumblr media
Step inside and was greeted by a friendly staff who speak fluent English but my eyes are feasted on their shoe display! haha...
Tumblr media
From left Antibes, St James II, Windsor, Eton and Rothschild

524FC Chukka Boot on classic last
Tried a couple of last on G&G to find out my true size...
Tumblr media
MH71 E width. I am on 8UK
Tumblr media
TG73 E width. I am on 8UK. I feel that TG73 is too aggressive for me. Prefer the soft square on MH71...
But what immersed me is this chukka boot by Saint Crispin!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A close inspection reveal the fine craftsmanship by the maker. The detail on the curve and 2 eyelets give it a sense of sexiness without too fashion forward, still retaining the classic look. The handmade braided shoe lace make it looks dressy yet versatile for causal occasion.
And yes the leather is so soft and supple that break in is not needed. I can feel the hugging waist on my arch after I tried it on. I enquire for the price (around 1.7k SGD with shoe tree) and keep in mind if I am going to get it in the future.
P.S. The next day, the staff sent me an email telling me she got a mixed up on the pricing. It should be around 1.5k with shoe tree and delivery! Good news but still out of my budget. Maybe one day...
Tumblr media
The leather is so soft...and the shine on the captoe...
Next I traveled to my 2nd destination by walking for about 10 mins. Unipair. Those who frequent Styleforum should find them familiar. They are an affiliates retailer of Styleforum specializing in Carmina shoes.

One of the staff come out and say photography not allowed!
Unipair carries a lot of shoe maker like Alden, Carmina, Stefano Bemer, Edward Green, Paraboot, Tricker, Jalan Sriwijaya(a shoe maker from Indonesia), Drakes accessories, Bresciani sock and Fox umbrella etc.... to their own inhouse shoe brand. They carry a lot of brands familiar to menswear scene... Price wasn't that attractive due to the high tax in Korea. They did mention they are under tax refund scheme and told me about 10-15% are refundable at airport.
Although no photography is allowed, i did take a few shot on the sly. Let's hope that unipair is not reading this post haha...

Stefano Bemer Semi Brogue Oxford with medallon. This is the only size available to me and they are a beauty! Check out the medaliion....

I particularly like this Carmina shell derby punched captoe boot in Oscar last. I realize that I am UK8 on Oscar and Forest last. All along I thought that I am on 7.5UK
Visiting these 2 places take up whole morning and I just went to a cafe to have a quick lunch before moving on to the next destination. Oh ya, for those who is intending to rent a mobile phone with broadband capability, there is no need to do that as Seoul is a well connected wifi city with a lot of free wireless access everywhere.
After lunch is more of tailoring stuff.. Before my trip I have already shortlisted 2 tailors to visit and commissioned either a sports jacket or suit depending on my budget between one of them. Tailorable and Bntailor. Tailorable if I can remember, participated in Umno Pitti 86 last July and created quite a stir among sartorial enthusiast. While Bntailor without a doubt is one of the finest tailor in Seoul with their Italian flair.
Both Tailorable and Bntailor are nestled near the Itaewon region, within walking distance but with freezing temperature outside, I took a cab between them. First stop, Tailorable...

I was greeted and ushered to the fabric selection area when I mentioned I have made an prior appointment via email
Their price was not exactly on the high side. IIRC, a sports jacket start from 700K won and pant from 300K won. This is accordingly to them "blue label". Wine label, apparently with better finishing and fabric selection cost higher. They provide CMT as well from 600K won. The entry level are mostly mixed wool from Samsung mill. Yes you are not wrong, Samsung has their own mill as well. They do carry mill from VBC and Ariston but cost higher which I forget the price already.
Tumblr media
Holland and Sherry Tan cotton
Just when I am about to leave to Bntailor, I mentioned to the staff that I remember I saw from their website that they have a RTW tan cotton suit that cost from 700K won. The staff goes into the store and took out this bunch of Holland and Sherry tan cotton and speak to the master tailor in Korean and then say that they are able to use this fabric and bespoke a suit for the same price, 700K won! Wow that is able 800sgd for a bespoke suit! Despite the excitement I keep my cool and tell them I will let them know and if there isn't any good offer I will come back to them again. They agreed and I am off to my 2nd choice, BnTailor
Tumblr media
Magnificent brass plate with their logo pasted onto stone slab
BnTailor I reckon most of the reader might have already know them. Known to be very active on social media like IG and Tumblr, they have shown case a lot of their well finished suit in their social media pictures. I have been following them since a year plus ago and you can say subconsciously i have already know I wanted to tailor at least a sports jacket if not suit with them given a chance. There are also a interview done by one of the styleforummer when he visited them before they shifted to this new premise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The grand entrance to BnTailor. They have already made an impression on their entrance.
Tumblr media
They are located diagnolly opposite Grand Hyatt hotel. Good place for their new premise where all the International guests can just walk over to bespoke their one of their best suit in the world
Upon entering their shoe, I am greeted by Chad Park, the younger brother who know my name by the email corresponding with them. Wow! that is awesome customer service. Before going in, I take some snippets. Just to many sartorial products everywhere!

Next he usher his staff to attend to me and led me to the back of the first floor where the fabric are stored.

Box pleated with side adjuster pant. Inspired by this picture on their tumblr, I tried to replicate it with a local tailor but failed miserably
Tumblr media
Flat front pant with lower belt loop
There I have one of the most dilemma and indecisive choice of my life. Choosing of fabric! I have to keep within my budget hence I have to choose their last cut length which consists of Ariston, Huddersfield, VBC and Zegna. Imagine my delight when I see the available mill. But unfortunately, there is a reason why it is called last cut length for the color and fabric choice is quite limited. In the end, I goes for a blue linen from Hubeross for it is the safest and I like the color shade. I guess I must have taken at least 1 hour plus for I am sending the fabric choice to my wife and friends for their opinions.
On a side note, at the back of my mind I am still thinking about the offer by Tailorable if I should take their offer since Bntailor quoted me 1.1million won for their sports jacket, compared to Tailorable 700K won. But again I am awed by Bntailor service as well as their product has always been something I want to own this lifetime. I decided to go for it!
Tumblr media
Huberross blue linen. Safest for making my first linen sports jacket
When the selection step is done, I am again ushered to the 2nd floor to have my measurement taken. At this point Master Park come out with his usual stern but smiley face and give me a firm handshake. It is a relax environment until Master Park start to take my measurement.
Tumblr media
View of 2nd floor
The atmosphere is like a ritual... When master Park is taking my measurement and speak in Korean, his son Changjin is seriously taking down my measurement. Even when I tried to specify certain requirement, he kept his silence. Apparently when they work they mean business. Probably that's is the spirit of Japanese and Korean.

When I am done it is almost night fall. I am told to come back for fitting 3 days later. I think this article is pretty long by long. I will split into part III for the last part of my Sartorial trip Seoul. Next article I will show the finished sports jacket! Stay tuned once again!
