Reminder that wanting feedback doesn't make you entitled
Unsure about flair but this is a bit of a soft rant so, alas.
I feel like I see so much of this, writers who are downtrodden because their fics receive views but little to no interaction. Posts expressing disappointment, often including something similar to "...I don't mean to come across as selfish but"...." or "..."I know this may sound whiny and entitled but..."
No. It usually doesn't at all.
Writers who are perfectly content with writing only for yourselves and who don't care much about stats or interaction - more power to you. And, of course should always write out of a passion for your craft, for your own enjoyment, first and foremost.
But wanting interaction on your fics is okay, a need for validation is okay. When you were a kid and drew something you probably ran to your parents to show it off right afterwards, and their praise unleashed sweet sweet enorphins into your body. Adults are no different, we still thrive on it, and art is meant by be shared, enjoyed and reflected upon.
Receiving comments/kudos and just general acknowledgement acts as a great motivator for so many writers, and if this is the case for you, it's perfectly natural. Feedback on something published online to be viewed closes the creative circle, creator creates something, reader experiences and reflects over it, it's an nice exchange that often nudges the process forward.
You made a thing, and what you crave to hear is "oh yass that's a nice thing, please make more things". Unfortunately there's so many things, so sometimes your thing might be great, but it might still be overlooked because if you stop updating your thing there's still a multitude of other things right around the corner, free and directly available.
It's a bit sad to think about how many WIP'S were abandoned because insecure writers thought no one appreciated or read them, when a lot most likely were. So many great fics, potentially unwritten or unfinished. And it's unfortunate, because it takes a minute to leave a "I enjoyed this", one minute worth of text that might have a huge impact on the receiver.
So, if you're currently starved of interaction and wondering if you're wrong in being so bummed about it, lay your mind to rest. There's so many who feel the same, and if it helps a little to vent, do so unapologetically, this subreddit is the right place for it. I should end it by directing a million kudos to readers of fiction who support, engage and provide valuable feedback to fic writers. You guys 🙏 are the best. Anyway just my random thought of the day. Let's keep supporting and cheering each other on and create the interactive community we all deserve✌️
