N A T U R E S. B E A U T Y An unexpected delight today in the woods. So many beautiful and colourful mushrooms. The woods is one of my favourite places to be, so much life and so much quiet all at once. I don’t tend to find much pigment I can use in the forest so it allows me to enjoy nature’s beauty in other ways, like finding these little gems. (Obviously I left them where they were, no foraging today!) I think they might inspire some new paintings. Why I give strangers compliments:

Several years ago, I was in the passenger seat of my car driving around with my friend. It was a nice summer day and the windows were down. Just a really nice time. We pulled up to a light and I told him something true, but highly inappropriate. We both started laughing (me quite loudly and obnoxiously, as I'm wont to do), when I glance over to the car next to me. Driving it is a middle aged woman with a strange look on her face. Though I am in my own car, I immediately feel slightly embarrassed and the smile I give her is a little strained. She smiles back and says (and I'm paraphrasing here), "I was having a bad day, but your laugh made me smile." I beamed back, and waved goodbye as the light turned. I've always been self-conscious about EVERYTHING, and even in the middle of a wonderful day, it had struck again, until she said that.

To this day, I give random compliments all the time. Some people think it's weird, but it makes me feel good, and you never know when those compliments are really needed. Not preaching here at all. Don't do anything you aren't comfortable doing just because it makes a random stranger feel better. But sometimes people ask why I do this all the time, and this is why.
