What is already known?
Previous studies have documented trends in female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) prevalence rates across African countries, but they are limited to analyses of population-level changes in prevalence and absolute changes in prevalence rates.
These studies identified that in the majority of African countries, FGM/C prevalence has been decreasing over time.
There are currently no studies examining either relative changes in FGM/C prevalence to identify the countries in which prevalence has changed fastest, or disaggregating trends in FGM/C prevalence rates by women’s socioeconomic characteristics, across African countries.

Monthly Roundup January 2025
Urgent Appeal for the Prioritizing the Protection of Children Amidst Escalating Conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
"The Dallaire Institute calls on all the parties to the conflict to respect international law, ensure the full protection of all civilians, and provide proactive measures and protection to the children affected by the armed conflict in the east of the country."
Source: Peace Direct
A Look Back at Watchlist on Children and Armed Conflict in 2024
Together, let’s take a look back at key moments for Watchlist and for the UN’s Children and Armed Conflict (CAAC) agenda in 2024.
Implementing the ‘Children and Armed Conflict’ Agenda: Analyzing Data on Trends, Enabling Factors, and Persistent Challenges in Situations with Listed Parties
The analysis shows that the below factors play a role in shaping trends in grave violations:
Conflict and peace process dynamics. Levels of grave violations often ebb and flow over time as the scale and severity of armed conflicts fluctuate.
Third-party supporters. Third-party governments—including the 5 Permanent Members of the UNSC—have offered robust security support to some of the worst perpetrators of grave violations.
Legal accountability. The scale of ‘trigger’ violations is lower in contexts where the International Criminal Court (ICC) has jurisdiction, compared with contexts for which the ICC lacks jurisdiction.
Local civil society activities. In country contexts with the lowest levels of civil society participation, States exhibit a greater propensity to perpetrate ‘trigger’ violations. Conversely, States on the higher end of the civil society participation spectrum exhibit a lower propensity to perpetrate ‘trigger’ violations.
The report includes key recommendations related to: 1) elevating visibility for, and fortifying the credibility of, the CAAC agenda; 2) combatting impunity for grave violations; 3) deepening understanding of the drivers of grave violations; and 4) bolstering coordination among the varied actors advocating for and implementing the CAAC agenda.

Sri Lanka plans elephant corridors to curb human - elephant conflict
"Sri Lanka is planning to establish five elephant coordiors in its north-central province to reduce human-elephant conflicts, state media reported on Sunday."
Keeping the spotlight on Africa’s child soldiers
"To safeguard children, child protection systems must be strengthened at all levels of government and society. National laws prohibiting the recruitment of child soldiers must be prioritised across Africa. High-risk countries must provide comprehensive services for former youth fighters, and help local communities to effectively reintegrate former child soldiers and prevent their re-enlistment."

I desperately want to know the dynamic between Chad and Chloe. I want to know the dynamic between Chloe and Audrey. Chloe and FGM and Jane. Chloe and Ben. Also, is Chad not going to be there? As far as I've heard, Uma's the only return so far. I can understand if they're having trouble getting people like Thomas Doherty back, so Uma without Harry unfortunately tracks. But a story about Chad's sister and it doesn't include him? It's confusing and I don't know how to feel about it.

International Women's Day: Mamamoo Edition
Just because I thought "Why not?" If you you're involved with Mamamoo, every single day feels like a Women's Day. And here are the reasons why 👇🏻
Kim Yongsun - Solar
When we're talking about women empowerment in K-Pop or the music industry in general, I hardly can think of a better role model than Kim Yongsun. She's not only Mamamoo's oldest member and their leader, she's also a very supportive and thoughtful person who always cares about everyone and everything around her.
Her YouTube channel Solarsido demonstrates her versatility as singer, entertainer, dancer, choreographer etc. and she pleases her fans with a lot of diverse content. Once in a while she shows her incredible dance skills, the other day she exposes her way of learning English. But what's really impressive about her YouTube channel is that she raises awareness about serious issues and social causes:
youtube
In honor of “Expectant Mother’s Day”, Solar volunteered to help watch her friend Eun Song’s newborn baby. Solar volunteered to help watch her friend Eun Song’s newborn baby. While she did struggle a bit, her sharing the experience was illuminating about what mothers go through on a daily basis! ©Koreaboo
youtube
Solar joined forces with Dongdaemun Senior Welfare Center and social worker Jung Soo Bin to donate roughly 2,200 lbs of kimchi to underprivileged elderly. She even delivered some of the boxes in person, making the gesture even more meaningful! ©Koreaboo
youtube
On the “International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation”, Solar used her large platform to raise awareness of the violence women around the world experience as victims of FGM. ©Koreaboo
youtube
Also, did I mention that Solar stands for gender neutrality? I think we all remember that time she ripped off her shirt during their 4seasons 4 colors concerts and when she was invited to perform live at KBS! She explained, “Afer seeing many male idols ripping their shirts on stage, I wondered, ‘Why can’t girls do that too?‘”
There's a lot more to say about her so if you don't know much about Solar or Mamamoo in general, make sure to check them out. You won't regret it.
Moon Byulyi - Moonbyul
One of the best examples for gender neutrality and music diversity in K-Pop might be Miss Moon Byulyi.
With her latest solo comeback "Dark side of the Moon", she wrote a new history in K-Pop. Bold in both sound and style, Moonbyul takes the stage with "Eclipse" and uses it to show off her duality as both a singer and rapper over its forceful melody and brash beats. Accompanied by the release of a captivating music video where the artist is seen both as a soldier and a queen, “Eclipse” revels in Moonbyul’s skills as a performer, and also continues Mamamoo’s legacy as an act that constantly relays different ideas of feminine strength through their music. ©Billboard
youtube
Moonbyul is successfully redefining fashion’s outdated gender norms by wearing suits and breaking the beauty standards of K-Pop PERFECTLY. But Byulyi also has her soft sides. Her sincere love for Mamamoo and Moomoos is just precious and she never misses a chance to show her support and love for her members and fans. On Fancafe, she helped Moos who went through hard times and in her private life, family and friends play a central role which she proudly shows by her many tattoos.
I personally love her for her way of spreading self-confidence and a strong self-esteem. Be it by her self-composed songs or by simply talking with fans during Fanmeetings and on Vlive, she always motivates us to love ourselves!
Make sure to follow her on Instagram!
Jung Wheein - Wheein
Wheein was born to shine. But she was also born to be a great role model and here is why.
Fronting Soar, Wheein's first-ever solo single album, “Good Bye,” or “Let’s Break Up” as it reads literally in Korean, is a poignant track that rises and falls with Wheein's dynamic delivery of the song, as soft rock instrumentals build the melody up around her powerful vocals.
"Good Bye" was released through a heart-rendering music video that depicts a rare representation of same-sex love in K-pop. Featuring a woman entering the home of a couple, she treats it as if it’s her own and play-acts being in a relationship, while becoming enraged and destroying signs of the pair being together, seemingly out of jealousy. ©Billboard
youtube
In addition, Wheein explained that the shape of love doesn't matter to her, it's all the same. For me as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, Wheein's statement means a lot and I'm so happy about her support and understanding!
During the "Secret Unnie" filming with SNSD's Hyoyeon, Wheein also talked about the pressure of Korean beauty standards and her struggles of feeling left behind, a feeling all of us can relate to.
youtube
Whenever Wheein shows her vulnerable sides, it always carries an important message to her fans. I love her because she's simply being herself without trying to be someone she isn't. Wheein is one of the most humble artists I've ever met, she's an inspiration and a great emotional supporter.
Ahn Hyejin - Hwasa
I guess since she became THE it-girl of 2018, 2019 and probably 2020 also, everyone should be aware of how much of an amazing person she is. Here are the reasons why she is my number one queen.
Everything started with twit, her first solo song which quickly became a very popular song in SK. Her prowess as one of K-pop’s most dynamic singers carries throughout the song, a true show of her impressive talent as she addresses, mocks really, a lover who is giving too much to someone who doesn’t deserve it. ©Billboard
youtube
"If I don't fit in this generation's standard of beauty, I will have to become a different standard"
Who doesn't remember her most famous quote? I think a lot of people appreciate her for her very strong self-esteem and just being the way she is. Just like Wheein and the rest of Mamamoo, she's very humble and down to earth.
What I love the most about her is her attitude. Hwasa called out her haters in their latest comeback album "reality in BLACK" and doesn't hesitate to tell the whole world how much she loves to be herself.
What can I say, there's so much more I want to tell about her but the best way to get to know her is to watch the whole Mamamoo related content and ofc her solo activities, for example her appearance in "I live alone"
youtube
All in all we have to admit that she's the most badass queen ever who deserves the whole world. And it's our obligation to protect her from all the unnecessary hate. She has just the sweetest personality and even though she acts like a tough person, she can get hurt just like every other human on this planet.
Mamamoo isn't only a group of talented singers. They're very unique and special women with big hearts and a lot of love and support for their family, friends and fans. K-Pop is a strict and sometimes scary music business but even so, Mamamoo manages to be such great role models and one of the most humble celebrities I ever got to know!
#I could spend the whole day talking about Mamamoo#But it would never be enough time to mention all the great things they did#Mamamoo is just amazing in every aspect I can think of#I dedicate this to the international women's day and Mamamoo#Mamamoo#international women's day#mamamoo solar#moonbyul#Wheein#Hwasa

This is something I’ve really struggled w for years but… again my issue of not having an acceptable/understandable narrative… Incest has loomed large over my life and for a long time was not something I was equipped to deal w at all. It was a scary and difficult thing. I think for a lot of people it is. I’ve since done a lot of academic and personal studies on the subject. Now I can talk about it w like, no sense of shame, and yet even bringing it up to others makes me fear the stigma.
I had actual incest in my family—my grandfather was a rapist and pedophile who went after his daughters and others (he was a preacher and had a lot of opportunity). However I didn’t know about this as a kid, and neither did my mother—she only found out later in life when her sister came forward. My uncle had been praising their father on Facebook and she seems to have just broken at that. I once had a dream that my grandfather, who I in fact never met in real life, was at a family reunion and everyone was just treating him as one of the family. I think that’s indicative of how it felt under the surface—he wasn’t there but his marks were everywhere and though much of his first family (he divorced my grandmother to marry my mom’s childhood best friend) distanced themselves from him, they still acted out a lot of his traits—sadism, racism, etc.
At this point I just take incest as a fact, and also I think that psychosexual bonds between parent/child are almost a given if the relationship continues as the child ages. But what that looks like can take a lot of different forms. My mom came out of her childhood totally unable to handle that people are sexual beings (really a lot of denial of animality in general in WASP circles). I can remember her sexually shaming me at age like, 3. Obviously it got worse as her children aged. I feel sometimes like metaphorical FGM was done to me. And even deeper, like she treated me as if I was her sexual abuser from the time I was a baby.
I had an incestuous complex around my father and brothers from age 10-15 or so. I don’t think that’s uncommon really, and it was made worse by our family’s insular nature. I really didn’t have normal friends, and I wasn’t even aware that I was going to go through puberty and develop a sex drive. So i was just stuck at home with my brothers. I had an emotionally incestuous relationship with my drunken father, who I nurtured as if I was his wife or mother. He acted inappropriately towards both me and my sister, but most of that was going back to when I was a toddler. He used to grab at my not-formed breasts and call them tickets.
In general the family had a lot of incestuous ties, my mom is still to this day interfering in my oldest brother’s relationships w girlfriends (he’s almost 30), and she treats the other brother (the black one) like a prize race horse or a young boyfriend she can show off on her arm. All the siblings were too close. I only know my own experiences but I wonder how things were for them—I’ll never know, I just know that age 12, all of this was way too much for me.
I think the number one thing that makes this hard to talk about is I don’t have a normal “victim” narrative. A lot more people have weird family incest stuff than common wisdom would claim, but the fact that I had actual (not just dynamic based, emotional) incest in my family made me think about it more—but there I wasn’t the victim. And my dad never did anything “that bad” to me that I remember. But what did happen?
When I was 13, I decided I was a lesbian and stupidly trusted my brothers and told them. They immediately ran off to tell my parents. Of course I also told them I was an atheist, but somehow my immortal soul wasn’t as important as my sexuality. My dad never talked to me about it once—the most input I got from him was one time I walked in on him watching lesbian porn in the living room. However, my mother spent months of my life cornering me, making me go on long car rides with her, so she could try to talk me out of it. I got slapped, I got forced to listen to her Christian conservative propaganda, I got guilted with the potential that a grandmother might not be able to rest In peace—and I got accused of incest.
I will never forget it. I was in the living room. She decided to confront me in front of my brothers. She went on about how gross and bad lesbians are, and then she went, “if I bared my breast to you right now, would you be attracted to me?” I was stunned. A lot of other back and forth went on, and then I ran out of the house; she locked me out for the night. Later, on a car ride to school, my brothers said that, if I was willing to do something so perverse as have sex with a woman, surely I would be okay with sleeping with them too.
All of that really broke me. More than anything, I think I was terrified they were right. I never felt comfortable touching them after that and there were times they let me know my touch was disgusting. The fear was that I was complicit; I was a pervert; I was sexually depraved and wrong. It was so confusing and a really hard time in my life (this was by no means the only thing going on).
At this point I don’t feel that self-blame anymore. I can see it in context. What happened was that I was punished, scapegoated for something that was the entire family’s sickness. Similar things happened with one of my brothers (scapegoated for the family’s crimes) and sister (scapegoated for the family’s lies). I’m not going to deny that I was sexually attached to family members! Arguably that’s a part of adolescence; the important thing is that you don’t stay there. The entire family had weird sexual boundaries, and it was the fault of my parents for not preventing that. Why should I feel bad that at age 13, when I was highly confused and sexually repressed, I was overly close with my older brother—literally one of the only significant relationships in my life at the time?
And again, it’s like, y’all can call me names all you want, but I’m the only one of my parents’ children who isn’t attached to them at the hip. We’re all adults! The youngest of us is 23! But my oldest brother lives like 20 minutes from them, lived in their house for years, the other one goes to church with my mom every weekend, the last one wants to be nurtured like she’s still a child (though I have to say those last two have limited autonomy for complicated fucked up reasons). But what I’m getting at is that they’re all still a big incestuous unit and I refuse to be a part of it.

Introducing the launch of the TED-Ed Innovative Educator Alumni Innovation Projects
TED-Ed Innovative Educators
In 2015, TED-Ed launched the TED-Ed Innovative Educator (TIE) program, a year-long professional development program for dynamic educators who are dedicated to celebrating the ideas of students and teachers around the world. Six years later, we have 104 alumni representing over 20+ countries, constantly thinking of new ways to innovate in education.
2020 brought on unpredictable levels of global change: a pandemic, racial reckoning, and world-wide political upheavals. The traditional system of schooling has experienced significant disruptions in the past year.
These changes signaled a call to action: the TIEs, coming from rural, urban and suburban communities, in roles including classroom teachers, adjunct professors, superintendents, librarians, college advisors, district tech specialists, and more, are coming together to build some solutions.
First, the TIEs identified problems in global education and turned them into four main Opportunity Statements:
1. Redesign instruction: Reimagine how instruction can comprehensively meet the needs of all students. 2. Redesign how we address inequities: Reimagine how to empower teachers and communities to address race, equity, inclusion, and justice issues. 3. Assess innovations in pandemic: Assess how to carry forward the innovations created during the pandemic into full-time in-school instruction (and continue to build a culture of school/district innovation). 4. Reinvest in educators’ well-being: Reinvest in how best to support our teachers and admin, professionally and personally.
Next, each TIE has chosen one Opportunity Statement to work on for their Innovation Project. Follow their journey over this year as they collaborate, design, test, and share their innovations; we will be reporting back through the project development.
Explore why some TIEs are working on their chosen Innovation Project:
Redesign instruction
Alejandra Guzman (Texas, USA)
I have worked in the curriculum and instruction department in two different school districts over the last 6 years. I know that in many schools, some parts of instruction, curriculum, and assessment are out-dated, focused too much on standardized assessments and not on deep learning, making connections with other content areas, and application to solve real-world problems. This type of instruction will strengthen student critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills. I believe rethinking what instruction should and can look like and creating a realistic instructional model will help many educators go back to focus on what the true meaning of education should be.
Christie Simpson (Perth Western, Australia)
I work at school in a low socio-economic area. We have high rates of poverty and transiency and over 60% of our students have some developmental trauma. Only 35% of our Year 7 students arrive at high school able to read at grade level. 35% are still learning to read with fluency and 30% are still learning to decode words. How do teachers cater for this? Mostly, they try to muddle through the vast amounts of content in our curriculum, often using ineffective – though well-intentioned – discovery or inquiry based learning practices. I know there is great value in those models, but I also know that our students need strong foundational literacy and numeracy capacity as well as concrete background knowledge which they can draw on as they start to inquire. I’d like to see us arm teachers at both ends of the instructional spectrum, so that they can competently and effectively meet their students at their point of need.
Georgios Villias (Athens, Greece)
I honestly believe that living in a world which overwhelms us daily with information, it is humanly impossible to stay focused on something unless it is useful, exciting, and meaningful for you. This reality applies to schools as well. Instruction should be much more than just content knowledge. Instruction should also care about developing skills, showcasing each individual’s unique talents, engaging learners to act in real-life situations, nourishing and inspiring youngsters’ minds, teaching moral values in a social context and so much more. Molding students’ character, encouraging active citizenship, and raising the next generation of ethical problem-solvers always start from family and school. I would be honored as an educator to make even a minor, constructive contribution to my students’ lives towards that direction.
“Instruction should be much more than just content knowledge.”
Kristin Leong (Washington, USA)
Students and teachers deserve more diverse, timely, and dynamic resources and more support. Teaching is hard. Online teaching during a pandemic, a civil rights uprising, and an insurrection is really hard. In addition, the news cycle is relentless. The Sisyphean task of educators to constantly find great resources to build an engaging curriculum that responds to quickly-shifting current events is profoundly challenging. Lastly, our students are increasingly diverse in race, culture, sexual orientation, and gender identity, while our teachers remain mostly white, female, and heterosexual. Connecting with young people across these divides, when you instruct 30+ students at a time, only compounds the challenge of designing original curriculum. As a former QPOC teacher myself, I know teachers need more support and a reliable flow of trustworthy and updated resources by diverse sources to connect their classrooms to current events in ways that inspire students to engage with the world and their learning.
My weekly newsletter ROCK PAPER RADIO is one way I’m offering support to teachers. Every Thursday, I share three multimedia stories by diverse thinkers and creatives delivered via email for free. The newsletter is quick (less than five min to read), and organized by format (an audio feature, an essay or article, a human interest story). All stories are linked to current events and framed for personal engagement.
The Black Lives Matter movement has shaken awake all of the systems that make up society, including our education system. Young people are paying attention and rightfully demanding more inclusive and more current curriculum now. I’m thrilled to be part of this TIE alumni group working to usher in that much-needed change with heart, innovation, and more than a little bit of courage.
Mahrukh Bashir (Tangerang Selatan, Indonesia)
I have encountered instructional models dominated by the ideas of transfer of content and knowledge with the implicit understanding that learners are merely vessels to be filled. This system had, and still has, standardized curricula delivered in standardized ways and the effectiveness assessed using standardized testing. On the other hand, I have been refreshingly greeted by ideas of developing students’ talents and dispositions, differentiation and individual needs. However, the perfect instructional model that takes into account individual needs and delivers academic rigor and deep learning is yet to present itself. I want to explore and implement an innovative model of instruction that comes closest to this, what has effectively become “the holy grail of modern education.”
Reimagine how we address inequities
Craig Zimmer (Ontario, Canada)
I love the fact that we are having some real conversations here. We need to advocate for students and show that, as educators, we are on their side no matter what. In 2021, we have to ensure that education is inclusive and accessible to all students. This is going to require very big changes and it all starts when we go to work to bring about real reform.
Fred Sagwe (Kisii, Kenya)
I believe the approach to inequities on race, equity, inclusion and social justice issues means different things depending on the region and countries. For example in Kenya and most parts of sub-Saharan Africa, the challenges have a gender-based perspective. There was the challenge of FGM among young girls who, after circumcision, are married young, hence dropping out of schools. Also, marginalization in less developed regions in Kenya also hinder favorable educational outcomes. School infrastructure is a concern too, including the availability of reliable internet connectivity. The government is trying to remedy the situations.
Jen Ward (Michigan, USA)
This past year has served to highlight in so many different ways the divides, gaps, and inequalities that are systematized in our educational spaces. I selected this project because I believe as a global group of change-makers, we are able to come together, dig deep, and put forth proposals for real change to ensure that all students have an opportunity to learn, grow, and be heard.
Sandy Chambers (North Carolina, USA)
Working to change a system that perpetuates inequities is my calling. Working with others who believe that change can happen is inspirational and hopeful. As an administrator, I have more “power” than I think. I know we can make a change!
“Empowering starts with radical truth-telling, which means listening to all stakeholders, especially students.”
Shameka Williams (Georgia, USA)
I want better for all students that have unfair disadvantages due to a system that was not historically designed with all children in mind. I want better for each generation, so they do not experience the same setbacks as those before them and have to work harder to prove themselves as equal. Moreover, I want to tackle this problem with others that bring different perspectives so that the narrative and outcomes are inclusive of everyone! One perspective cannot be the solution to this global issue.
Tim Leistikow (Minnesota, USA)
I am not sure how we achieve any meaningful change in our system (I teach in the USA, but I assume similar issues in other countries) until we start telling the truth about the history that led to the inequities that exist and persist today. Empowering starts with radical truth-telling, which means listening to all stakeholders, especially students. I have done a project with students on creating the ideal education system for the past 10 years, and every cohort sees addressing inequities around race, gender, religion, sexuality, socio-economic status, and more, as being a primary first step to making schools a better place for students.
Wiputra Cendana (Tangerang, Banten, Indonesia)
Equity and equality become great challenges especially for the students who have learning difficulties, connectivity issues, and other variables. This project is to give a new learning model as I synthesize from a particular current teaching experience. I truly hope the project will be a small sparkle and idea which can equip educators around the world to confront these issues. Entrust the learning essence and ‘meat’ will be absorbed well by the students across the world. Let’s think globally, connect intentionally, share clearly, and act locally.
Assess innovations during the pandemic
Lisa Winer (Florida, USA)
I found that during Hybrid teaching, I couldn’t see my students’ work – they used to work on whiteboards or I could walk around and see how well they understood. But even then, I didn’t hear from or see everyone. For my capstone project for my EdD, I am researching how to add ed tech to the classroom to help capture student thought and to include the voices of the students who are quiet or who aren’t risk-takers. I want to hear from all students and showcase them all as well. This was something brought forth from the pandemic because never before had I not been able to see the work of my students as they were thinking.
Maggie Muuk (Kching, Malaysia)
I would want to know more about innovation as many of my students were left behind by this pandemic. Many of them do not have sufficient access to gadgets or internet to enable them to stay aligned with the lesson. Currently, we are only using WhatsApp to communicate. I’m looking for low technology to make them want to study.
Małgorzata Guzicka (Legnica, Poland)
I truly believe that because of the pandemic, we have rediscovered online learning. Teachers are learning how to use different platforms and educational apps to enhance online learning; students are doing projects in groups using educational websites. I think it would be awesome if students and teachers from different countries could work and learn from one another, do projects together and meet online. I am thinking about a project that could help teachers and students learn from one another about their cultures.
Shawn T. Loescher (California, USA)
The pandemic has represented a time of tremendous learning for our educational and social institutions. Within the pandemic, nearly 1.5 billion children around the world have had disruptions to their typical educational environment. Through this disruption, we have learned that there are multiple modalities and ways of learning. To me, the challenge we face as we emerge from the pandemic is which of the many successful lessons we’ve learned should be adopted and institutionalized to advance academic performance, address inequities, and redesign our schools, in order to create a more human-centered experience that is sustainable in scale and scope.
“The students we will meet on the other side of this pandemic will deserve better than a return to the ‘old normal.’”
Susan Herder (Minnesota, USA)
Educators and students were forced to change suddenly in the midst of the pandemic, often without adequate support. I chose this project because as we return to a combination of in-person and online classes, teachers need to be able to let go of the practices that are not effective and continue to use innovations that engage students and close gaps and eliminate inequities.
Tim Couillard (Virginia, USA)
Well frankly, there is no going back. The students we will meet on the other side of this pandemic will deserve better than a return to the “old normal.” I suspect (and secretly hope) they will demand it. Amid the toll and tragedy of this past year, I hope we find a way to get education “unstuck,” to shed the lockstep factory model of learning once and for all. Let’s hope that necessity is still the mother of invention. I suspect that we have all had a chance to cultivate some new habits of mind that will be as useful in-person as they are at a distance. I’m excited to see where that leads us.
Lastly, I hope that we abandon, or at least push back against, the anxiety-fueled march of “more is more” when it comes to education. Students are people first, learners second. They are more than the test data the system can coax from them to tout their “success.” If we truly believe in social and emotional learning, we need to reject it as a mere tool to boost productivity. We need to not only mean what we say, but ask ourselves if our actions match our words. Ultimately, I hope we can look back on all this and say, tired as we are, we still found the strength to work for a world where what we have gained from this pandemic will be greater than all we have lost.
Umar Anjum (Lahore, Pakistan)
I am working on this as I have seen that inequalities and gaps in the education system have been growing and merely adding more resources is not helping. That is why I believe the answer is hidden in the Innovations.
Reinvest in educators’ well-being
Sarah Harkin (Shanghai, China)
Self-care isn’t just a buzzword; it’s critical. So much is asked of teachers. I hope to find real ways to help build teacher capacity and systemic support within schools in order to better prioritize teacher well-being, specifically mental health and work-life balance.
“Self-care isn’t just a buzzword; it’s critical.”
Sharon Hadar (Raanana, Israel)
During the pandemic, most things have become accelerated – emotions, thoughts, worries, health issues, financial difficulties, and more. On top of this, education systems and educators have been put under the microscope. We get so much criticism from parents, the media, politicians, our administrators, and more.
We, the educators, are the foundation and base for our communities. Our well-being is essential for our communities; teachers have to support each other, be strong, and stay united. It is also making sure there is a way to release and vent, while at the same time find the strength to continue doing our job the best way we can. I want to find the right way to do this, together with the rest of the TIEs, as a part of a strong and cohesive group that can change people’s viewpoint about teachers. It’s time for us to take care and support each other. I am sure that with this project we will find the best way to achieve this!

What are the new findings?
Our analyses include the estimation of historic, absolute and relative changes in FGM/C prevalence rates as well as disaggregating trends by women’s education and urban-rural residence, for 23 African countries.
We show that there is a relationship between absolute and relative FGM/C prevalence rates and that comparisons of trends across countries are dependent on the type of prevalence measure that is used.
Our analyses suggests the presence of an underlying FGM/C transition and uncovers growing socioeconomic inequalities in FGM/C as countries change from high to low prevalence.

The role of older women in contesting norms associated with female genital mutilation/cutting in Senegambia
Social norms theory is increasingly utilized in studies that aim to understand the perpetuation of FGM/C, and was used as a framework to explore how norms influence FGM/C decisions, and how these norms differ across generations. The authors used focus group interviews to generate data for exploratory investigations of social norms, values, and meanings. These focus groups also helped researchers to examine the participants’ social interactions, power structures, and dynamics of change.
Research questions included: How are social norms interrelated with FGM/C decision-making? How are norms upheld, shifted, or resisted as social circumstances progress? When and how are social norms questioned or challenged, and by who? The article found that FGM/C was often upheld by peer convention and peer pressure, seemingly because it serves as a signal to other affected women that a girl or woman respects authority and her elders, and is fit to enter a social network. Upholding tradition was strongly associated with the perpetuation of FGM/C as it is seen as a way to respect ancestors and cultural values.
I was interested in this article because it pointed out how older woman could take on the role of change leaders, where they would increase norm flexibility and thus accelerate the abandonment of FGM/C without drastically changing ethnic/cultural traditions.
Older women appeared to be more accepting of change and question the necessity of FGM/C, especially when they considered risks such as HIV infection. The study found that the openness of older women to reassess social norms may be a driving factor in negotiating change and serve as a means of eliminating FGM/C.
“By recognizing the authority of older women as advocates for change, and drawing on variability and fluidity in norms and practices, it may be increasingly possible to shape possibilities for action and accelerate abandonment of FGM/C without undermining the value of cultural traditions.”

The Handmaid’s Tale Episode 5: Faithful
“They didn’t get everything. There was something inside her they couldn’t take away. She looked invincible.”
SOOOOOOOO many thoughts guys.
Have I talked about how show commander is so much more creepy than sad book commander. He was also a creep. But Joseph Fiennes is really taking it up a level. The way he lustfully watches her read a trashy women’s magazine.
Flashbacks to Luke are revealing. June was so light hearted and playful.
Moira: “Oh, hey, (points) you look heterosexual.” LOL, Samira Wiley is the perfect Moira.
Invincible.
I am so glad we get to see life before as a reminder of all that these women have lost. Dystopia can often feel otherworldly unless it’s grounded in the real world.
That kitchen flirting scene is the cutest thing I’ve ever scene. Nick doesn’t even try to be subtle.
“Don’t you have somewhere to be?” “Nope.”
And the adorable, schoolgirlish way she looks at him while eating her breakfast. So adorable. Show JunexNick are much cuter than the book version.
Only to be followed by that awkward conversation about trying to conceive with another man, mainly Nick. Oh crap. In the books there is no Nick ceremony. The show created kind of a rapey scenario for them which I didn’t like. But it also felt realistic for this particularly crazy world. This Serena seems like she would want as much control as possible. And I wonder if she ever knew about the additional, much more enjoyable time later on (more on that later). What would she think if she knew June was able to take ownership of her body and have a consensual closeness with someone.
Emily – You’re so not fine. Watching these women having to pretend to be fine when they are internally screaming. One more form of abuse in Gilead.
The flashback to Luke in the café. The flirting was really cute, but I struggle with people making infidelity sexy. So I’ll leave it at that, it felt sexy but wrong.
Ok, so the Nick ceremony. My discomfort with this scene is made a little less by how nervous and uncomfortable Nick is. If he had been excited or commander like I would have hated him, but he’s super jittery. Cuz you know, this is still rape too, and a decent human wouldn’t be comfortable with it.
Also, my how Serena is losing faith and taking things into her own hands. “Should we pray first?” “No there’s no time.” That actually happened in the Bible too and led to additional problems.
What a horrible way to have a first time with someone you’re actually interest in.
Well, at least Nick thought to make the bed. But watching Offred walking slowly towards it was a reminder of how she has absolutely no power over her own body. Serena can just decide to pass her off however she wants to as long as she gets what she wants.
When he’s undoing his belt and the music was blurring, ugh, it felt really rapey. Except they both are really being raped here, in a way. By Serena. Or at least violated He didn’t have a choice either and I’m pretty sure he didn’t want it to happen this way. Does that make it better? I don’t think so. Except maybe this gives him a little insight into what her experience is like.
The eye contact, it’s like “is this okay? Are you okay? Crap, WTF am I doing?”
OfSteven (Emily) new family. Her wife seems to be kinder, more understanding of her situation. I don’t now that it does much good for Emily, but it lets us know there are some semi-decent people in Gilead.
Ugh, that poor girl, two ceremonies in one day. The level of abuse is ratcheting up, especially with the commander breaking protocol. His look of power and ownership and his touching of her leg. The sound of her internally telling him to “stop it” but not being able to say anything. Ugh, I’m shaking.
“I didn’t mind it. I don’t think you did either.” 1. Rapist. 2. Doesn’t the fact that she just told you never to do that again, means she did in fact “mind it”. 3. Creepy Rapist.
And then to pacify her he provides her with a magazine. She is not 12. Ugh this scene makes me hate men for a second or two.
“We had choices then.”
“Now you have respect.” WHATTTTTTTTTTTT is that what you call respect? What the literal F? I cussed so much this episode.
“Fulfill your biological destiny in peace.” Why don’t you stop deciding for other people what their destiny is or how they go about peace?
Explaining the FGM on Emily, “We’re not without compassion.” I AM SOOOOOOOOO MAD! “It’s such a small problem” Please please use those garden shears Offred.
This show makes me ssoooooooooo mad.
“We only wanted to make the world better.”
“Better never means better for everyone It always means worse for some.”
Time for garden shears.
That kitchen scene between Offred and Nick is so powerful. She was just forced to have sex with him. Had this awful encounter with the commander and then finds out Nick is an eye.
But it's the words, “please don’t tell me what to do” that broke me. And I think it broke him to. There is so much guilt written over his face. It doesn’t make it better, but I like seeing that he’s not one dimensional. But ugh, the power dynamic. It’s just appalling. Even watching someone I like have that much power over her and then have him reveal he has even more. This world is so ugly.
Alexis Bledel’s eyes are just amazing. Finally getting to share her name with a friend. If Offred never gets to tell Emily her real name I’ll be pissed.
And then the most powerful melt down. I hope that ride felt really good. She found a way to seize some control. Praise be.
Offred in the study with Ms. Waterford and the garden shears. Perfect for clue.
“They didn’t get everything.”
Never have I ever been so excited for someone to have sex in my whole life. That scene at the end is the most triumphant use of intimacy I’ve ever seen. Two scenes earlier she told him, “Please don’t tell me what to do.” And in that scene you can see she is completely in control. Nick’s hands remain at his sides. There’s even a moment where he goes to help remove a garment and then he pulls back.
You could feel the tides turning a bit this episode. And after so much utter oppression, some are starting to stand up. To claim whatever freedom they can find.
