Underpinning Repairs
If your foundation is shifting, it’s time to call for underpinning repairs. Unlike other types of foundation repair, underpinning actually fixes the root cause of the problem by extending and strengthening the foundation to distribute the load over a larger area.
Generally, underpinning is used to address a change in soil composition that has affected the foundation of your building or home. This can be caused by shrinking, expanding or other environmental factors. Over time, these changes in the soil will eventually affect your structure’s foundation, causing it to shift or sink. Underpinning is one of the most effective and permanent solutions to this issue.
There are many different signs that your home is in need of underpinning. The most obvious is if you notice that your floors are uneven, sunken or bowed in places. Another sign is if your doors and windows don’t open or shut properly, which could indicate that the walls are shifting. Finally, if your wallpaper is peeling, this can be a clear indication that there is a problem with the foundation underneath it.
While underpinning is a serious undertaking, it can be a quick and cost-effective solution to foundation problems in your home. Using helical or push piers, our experienced engineers can install an underpinning system beneath your home that will lift and stabilize it, stopping further foundation settlement and potentially preventing further structural damage to your home or building.
When to Underpin Your Home
It’s essential to have your foundation underpinned when you notice any of the warning signs, but it can also be necessary if you plan on adding an extra floor to your home. During construction, builders often overlook important steps in foundation construction or choose poor soil for the foundation to rest on. Underpinning will give your new floor the stability it needs and prevent future shifts in the foundation.
The best way to determine if your foundation needs underpinning is to contact a qualified engineer or foundation contractor. A thorough inspection will allow them to recommend the most appropriate method of underpinning for your building.
Some underpinning methods are more invasive than others, but they all work to strengthen and stabilize your foundation for as long as you own your property. The most common underpinning method uses push or helical piers, which are installed under your foundation to be driven into the deeper, more stable soil below your house.
Other underpinning methods require a concrete beam to be built above or below your foundation, which then redirects the weight of your home onto multiple mass concrete bases. This is a great option if the underlying soil is expansive or prone to freezing, as it will prevent the ground from moving under your foundation.
Precise Restumping & Underpinning successfully maintains a reputation for delivering quality, reliable and sound services to clients all over New South Wales, with a licensed builder that personally oversee all work.

Detecting Foundation Problems Early: What Homeowners Should Look For
Tumblr media
Foundation issues can cause significant damage to your home if left unchecked. Early detection is key to preventing costly repairs and protecting your home’s structural integrity. By learning how to spot potential problems, you can address them before they escalate. Here’s what to watch for when identifying foundation problems in their early stages.
1. Cracks in Walls, Ceilings, or Floors
Cracks are one of the most common and visible signs of foundation trouble. Hairline cracks may not always be a cause for concern, but large, widening cracks or those forming in unusual patterns—such as stair-step cracks on brick walls—should be taken seriously. Pay attention to cracks near windows and doors, as these can indicate foundation shifting.
2. Uneven or Bouncy Floors
If your floors feel uneven, sloped, or bouncy when you walk, this could be a warning sign of foundation problems. Shifts in the foundation can cause parts of the floor to settle unevenly, leading to noticeable dips or sagging. Ignoring this issue may result in further damage to your home’s structure.
3. Doors and Windows Misalignment
Foundation problems can cause your home’s frame to shift, making doors and windows difficult to open or close properly. If you notice gaps around door frames, sticking windows, or doors that no longer latch, your foundation may be moving. These misalignments are often an early indicator of trouble beneath the surface.
4. Gaps Between Walls, Ceilings, and Floors
As the foundation shifts, it can cause separation between walls and ceilings or walls and floors. If you see gaps or spaces forming, it’s a sign that the structure of your home is being affected by foundation movement. These gaps can widen over time, leading to more serious structural issues.
5. Water in the Basement or Crawl Space
Excess water around your foundation can weaken the soil and cause shifting, which leads to foundation problems. If you notice standing water or dampness in your basement or crawl space, it could be a sign that your foundation is at risk. Ensuring proper drainage around your home is essential to maintaining a stable foundation.
6. Exterior Cracks and Shifting
Visible cracks or shifts in the exterior foundation or walls are another key sign of potential foundation issues. If you notice any large cracks or bulging areas in your home’s exterior, especially around the foundation, it’s important to seek a professional inspection. These cracks can worsen over time if not addressed promptly.
7. Leaning Chimney or Walls
A chimney or exterior wall that appears to be leaning or pulling away from the house is a major red flag for foundation problems. This could indicate significant movement in the foundation, which may lead to serious structural damage if not repaired quickly.
Conclusion
Identifying foundation problems before they worsen is crucial to maintaining the safety and value of your home. By keeping an eye out for early warning signs like cracks, uneven floors, and misaligned doors or windows, you can catch foundation issues early and prevent more extensive damage. If you suspect any problems, don’t hesitate to consult with a foundation repair specialist for a thorough inspection.

Underpinning Foundation: Strengthening Your Home’s Stability with Foundation Solutions
Tumblr media
Underpinning is a critical process for reinforcing and stabilizing foundations that have become compromised. Whether due to soil movement, water damage, or construction defects, a weakened foundation can jeopardize the safety and longevity of a structure. At Foundation Solutions, we specialize in underpinning foundation services, offering tailored solutions to strengthen and secure your property. In this blog post, we will explore the importance of underpinning, the signs that indicate a need for it, and why Foundation Solutions is your top choice for foundation repair and stabilization.
What is Underpinning?
Underpinning is a construction technique used to strengthen the foundation of an existing building. It involves extending the foundation’s depth or breadth so that it rests on a more stable soil layer. This process is essential for addressing various foundation issues, ensuring that the building can support its intended loads without shifting or settling.
When is Underpinning Necessary?
Several scenarios may necessitate underpinning, including:
Foundation Settlement: When a foundation sinks or shifts due to soil compaction or erosion, underpinning can restore stability.
Increased Load Requirements: If you’re adding additional floors or heavy equipment to a building, underpinning may be needed to support the increased load.
Soil Changes: Variations in soil moisture content or the presence of expansive clay can cause foundations to move.
Construction Defects: Poor construction practices, such as inadequate soil compaction or insufficient foundation depth, may require corrective underpinning.
Natural Disasters: Events like earthquakes, floods, or landslides can weaken foundations, making underpinning necessary.
Signs Your Foundation Needs Underpinning
Identifying the signs of foundation problems early can help you avoid more severe issues and costly repairs. Look for the following indicators that underpinning may be needed:
Visible Cracks: Large or expanding cracks in walls, floors, or the foundation itself can signal foundation movement.
Uneven Floors: Floors that slope or feel uneven may indicate that the foundation is settling unevenly.
Sticking Doors and Windows: Difficulty opening or closing doors and windows can be a sign of a shifting foundation.
Gaps Around Windows and Doors: Gaps appearing around window and door frames are a common sign of foundation movement.
Separation of Walls: Walls pulling away from the house or each other can indicate serious foundation issues.

For Feminists, Silence On Gaza Is No Longer An Option
It is a feminist responsibility to call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
I am also consumed by a deep anger, a profound disappointment, towards feminists in my country, the United Kingdom, and beyond, who appear completely disinterested in the suffering of women in Gaza.
These self-proclaimed feminists, are eerily silent about Israel’s similarly egregious actions against Palestinian women.
Israel’s near-total siege and indiscriminate bombardment of Gaza have already killed, maimed and disappeared under the rubble tens of thousands of Palestinian women and children. Many more have been displaced and left to survive the harsh winter without appropriate shelter and supplies. The almost complete breakdown of the healthcare system, coupled with the lack of food and clean water, means that some 45,000 pregnant women and 68,000 breastfeeding mothers in Gaza are facing the risk of anaemia, bleeding, and death. Meanwhile, hundreds of Palestinian women and children in the occupied West Bank are still imprisoned, many without trial, and trying to survive in abominable conditions.
This catastrophe is playing out in the open, but the majority of feminists in Britain, and more generally in the West, seem to have nothing to say about it.
Why are the stories of Palestinian women ignored? Why do the struggles of Palestinian women and children seemingly not merit the same level of concern? Increasingly, I am led to believe that this is not just a lapse in attention, but wilful blindness – the consequence of a moral compass that may be broken beyond repair.
In the face of such overwhelming terror, there can be no neutrality.
Today, Palestinian women are living through horrors that fundamentally challenge the core values of feminism. Mothers are burying their children with bare hands; families are grieving for their lost homes and shattered lives hungry, and under a rain of bombs.
Under these circumstances, silence is not a neutral stance. Silence today is a passive endorsement of the ongoing tragedy. How many more lives must be torn apart before these careful and politically “neutral” feminists find the courage to call for a ceasefire? The rising death toll isn’t just a tally; it represents individual lives, stolen futures, and a direct challenge to the principles that underpin feminism itself.
Today, what remains unsaid has as much importance, and impact, as what has been said.
Numerous prominent “feminist” voices, always vocal in their views on gender, sex and society, are still conspicuously silent on the struggles of Palestinian women. While their platforms have the power to bring critical issues to light, they also have the subtle power to relegate others to the sidelines. Too often, we see that the concerns of non-Western women are being pushed to the periphery by the reluctance of these high-profile activists to write and speak about them.
This selective silence challenges the universality of feminist solidarity. Especially when it comes from prominent feminists who many others look up to, silence becomes a form of complicity. Do you believe your silence on the tragedy of Palestinian women has gone unnoticed? I hate to break it to you, but your silence is deafeningly loud, and has stripped your work of any credibility in the eyes of many.
If you are one of those “feminists”, who do not speak about the suffering of Palestinian women, or endorse the calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, for whatever reason, I have one, very simple demand from you. Look at the photographs coming out of Gaza. You may have been avoiding them, dismissing them as mere propaganda – but for one second, leave your biases and smart excuses behind, and look at them.
Look at the images of mothers cradling the lifeless, bloodied bodies of their children.
Look at the images of confused toddlers, often missing limbs and flesh, lying alone on hospital floors.
Look at the images of young women, with dead eyes, trying to collect fragments from their lives and murdered families in the rubble of their destroyed homes.
Look at those images, really look at them, and then explain to me why you think “it is not right to demand a ceasefire now”. And after seeing those images, really seeing them, you still want to stay “neutral”, stay silent, or talk about “Islamist oppression” and “LGBT intolerance”, don’t call yourself a feminist. Because you are not one.

This edition also includes some really useful historical notes to augment Book I of Utopia; the early 16th century was a time when the population was growing, adding slack to a labor market that had been tight since the Black Death (to the improvement of the position of the peasantry that survived it), there was gradual inflation that was also eroding at the position of anybody without much capital to invest, patterns of trade were changing, and of course the process of enclosure was spreading.
The problem wasn't just a lack of, like, theoretical underpinnings for dealing with these economic and social issues. Of course Henry VIII didn't have a court economist or anything to help him out with his fiscal policy. But it was also just that the conception of what the law and what government was for was different: in the much more leisurely pace of the premodern world, there was a strong feeling that the law and government were supposed to basically be a steady-state system. You would figure out the ideal set of laws, implement them, and be done; you might have to work to enforce those laws, but the laws were not supposed to be constantly changing, and you definitely weren't supposed to have to be continually updating and expanding them as an instrument of policy, because the world in general was supposed to be much like it always was, from one decade to the next.
And that's not a crazy way to view the world in the Middle Ages! Premodern inflation rates were low. People's intuitions around value and price were based on that experience. Population growth was low. Patterns of international trade didn't change quickly. When things did change suddenly, it was either because of a catastrophe like the Black Death or upheavals like war or famine; and communities and individuals that had won legal privileges from their feudal lords were jealous of those privileges, leading (along with the inherently fragile nature of subsistence agriculture) to a certain conservatism in the culture.
In this worldview, the job of a king or a minister isn't to be the careful manager of a dynamic system. It's to be a wise and thoughtful dispenser of justice and guardian of the inherited legal system. This is also the vision of Utopia itself: a society which has settled into an ideal steady-state, whose political economy is thus fixed, and which has no real room for "development," because the kind of development you or I think of as inherent to history is, at best, a synonym for "something went horribly wrong, and we have to repair it," if it exists at all. The irony there, of course, is that Utopia is not a medieval book: it's being written just as the Renaissance is bursting over Europe ushering in the beginning of modernity. Things are changing in England, and while they are changing slowly right now, the pace of change is about to pick up drastically, especially when that little German monk publishes his 95 theses.
Really, I wonder what it must have felt like to be a humanist at the beginning of the 16th century. There is much to be excited about--news from the new world (not yet the battleground of large European empires), the rediscovery of classical learning, the flourishing of art and literature. But so much is about to change--and much of it in a bad way! the European Wars of Religion are just around the corner!--and you have no idea.

Underpinning Services
A weak house foundation can lead to cracks in walls and floors, leaks in pipes, and bouncy surfaces. It is important to underpin your home to save it from further damage and to avoid costly repair work in the future. Underpinning is a common service that can be offered by local building contractors in Melbourne.
There are several ways to underpin a house in Melbourne, however, the most popular is mass concrete underpinning. This involves digging holes underneath the existing foundation and then pouring concrete into the hole. The concrete cures and prevents any further movement of the foundation.
Other methods of underpinning services Melbourne include piles and steel helical underpinning. Pile underpinning is similar to underpinning but uses a series of steel cylinders that are driven into the ground. This method of underpinning is ideal for pier and beam type foundations as it adds additional support to the structure. It is also suitable for masonry structures such as brick walls and chimneys.
Helical underpinning is another option that uses steel cables to create a circular pile of concrete. This pile is then attached to the foundation using brackets. This is a relatively inexpensive way to underpin a property, especially if it is only required for a small area.
Besides underpinning, the company also offers other services such as reblocking and restumping Melbourne. These services are essential to maintain the structural integrity of your home, and they can help with damp issues such as mould and mildew growth. A quality service will take a diagnostic approach to determine the best solution for your foundation.
One of the most common problems that homeowners face is subsidence. Subsidence is a gradual sinking of the foundation of your home. It can be caused by a number of factors, such as changes in the soil composition or an earthquake. It can also be a result of tree roots as they remove water from the soil.
If left untreated, your foundations can get worse, and this will lead to a lot of expensive repairs and replacements for your home. It is important to contact a professional as soon as you notice any signs of subsidence in your Melbourne home.
There are a variety of different types of underpinning available for your Melbourne home, so it is important to choose the right method for your needs. Some options are more cost-effective than others, and the right method will ensure that your home is safe and secure. You can trust the professionals at Fort Knox Foundations to provide you with a reliable and affordable underpinning service. Contact us today to learn more about how we can help you.

Concrete Caisson Foundations: A Comprehensive Guide by Foundation Solutions
Tumblr media
When it comes to constructing sturdy and reliable structures, the foundation plays a pivotal role in ensuring long-term stability and safety. One of the most effective methods for supporting heavy loads and navigating challenging soil conditions is the use of concrete caissons. At Foundation Solutions, we specialize in providing top-quality concrete caisson foundation services, tailored to meet the specific needs of each project. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll delve into the basics of concrete caissons, their applications, benefits, and why Foundation Solutions is your go-to provider for exceptional foundation services.
What Are Concrete Caissons?
Concrete caissons, also known as drilled shafts, are deep foundation elements constructed by drilling a cylindrical hole into the ground and filling it with reinforced concrete. These structures are designed to transfer heavy loads from a building or structure to deeper, more stable soil or rock layers. Concrete caissons are commonly used in various construction projects, including bridges, high-rise buildings, towers, and other heavy structures.
The Construction Process of Concrete Caissons
The construction of concrete caissons involves several key steps:
Site Assessment and Planning: Before construction begins, a thorough site assessment is conducted to evaluate soil conditions, load requirements, and any potential challenges. This information is crucial for determining the size, depth, and number of caissons needed.
Drilling the Shaft: A specialized drilling rig is used to create a cylindrical hole in the ground. The diameter and depth of the shaft depend on the load-bearing requirements and soil conditions.
Installing Reinforcement: Once the shaft is drilled, a steel reinforcement cage is lowered into the hole. This cage provides additional strength and stability to the caisson.
Pouring Concrete: Concrete is poured into the shaft, encasing the reinforcement cage. The concrete is typically poured continuously to prevent the formation of cold joints, ensuring a uniform and strong foundation element.
Curing and Inspection: After pouring, the concrete is allowed to cure and harden. The caisson is then inspected for any defects or irregularities.
Load Testing: In some cases, load testing may be performed to verify the caisson’s load-bearing capacity and ensure it meets design specifications.
Applications of Concrete Caissons
Concrete caissons are versatile foundation elements suitable for a wide range of applications, including:
Bridges: Caissons provide the necessary support for bridge piers, transferring loads to deeper, more stable soil layers.
High-Rise Buildings: For skyscrapers and other tall structures, caissons offer a reliable foundation solution capable of handling heavy vertical and lateral loads.
Towers and Masts: Communication towers, transmission masts, and similar structures benefit from the stability and strength of concrete caisson foundations.
Marine Structures: In coastal and offshore construction, caissons are used to support docks, piers, and other marine structures.
Retaining Walls: Caissons can be used in the construction of retaining walls, providing stability and preventing soil erosion.
Benefits of Concrete Caisson Foundations
Concrete caisson foundations offer numerous benefits, making them an ideal choice for various construction projects:
High Load-Bearing Capacity: Caissons can support extremely heavy loads, making them suitable for large and complex structures.
Versatility: They can be used in a wide range of soil conditions, including soft soils, loose sands, and even underwater environments.
Reduced Settlement: By transferring loads to deeper, more stable soil layers, caissons minimize settlement and ensure the long-term stability of the structure.
Resistance to Lateral Forces: Caissons provide excellent resistance to lateral forces, such as wind and seismic activity, enhancing the overall safety of the structure.
Durability: When constructed with high-quality materials and proper techniques, concrete caissons are highly durable and require minimal maintenance.
Cost-Effectiveness: Despite the initial investment, caissons can be cost-effective in the long run due to their durability and minimal maintenance requirements.

Understanding Foundation Slope: Key Considerations and Solutions by Foundation Solutions
Tumblr media
Foundation slope is a critical aspect of a building’s structural integrity. It refers to the angle or gradient of the ground surrounding the foundation. An improper foundation slope can lead to a range of issues, including water drainage problems, soil erosion, and even foundation damage. At Foundation Solutions, we understand the importance of a well-designed foundation slope and offer expert services to address any slope-related concerns. In this blog post, we’ll explore the significance of foundation slope, the common problems associated with improper slopes, and the solutions we provide to ensure your property’s stability and safety.
The Importance of Proper Foundation Slope
A proper foundation slope is essential for several reasons, primarily related to water management and soil stability. Here are some key benefits of maintaining the correct slope around your foundation:
Effective Water Drainage: A properly sloped foundation ensures that water drains away from the building, preventing water accumulation around the foundation. This is crucial in preventing water infiltration, which can lead to basement flooding, mold growth, and foundation weakening.
Soil Stability: A correct slope helps maintain soil stability around the foundation. Poor slope design can lead to soil erosion, undermining the foundation and causing settlement or shifting. Proper grading prevents soil displacement and supports the foundation’s integrity.
Preventing Foundation Damage: Water accumulation and soil movement due to an improper slope can cause cracks, bowing walls, and other foundation damage. A well-graded slope minimizes these risks, extending the lifespan of the foundation.
Enhanced Property Value: A property with a well-maintained foundation slope is more attractive to potential buyers. It indicates proper maintenance and reduces the likelihood of costly repairs in the future.
Erosion Control: Proper slope design helps control erosion, which can wash away soil and destabilize the foundation. Erosion control is particularly important in areas prone to heavy rainfall or with loose soil conditions.
Common Problems Caused by Improper Foundation Slope
An incorrect foundation slope can lead to various issues that compromise the safety and stability of your property. Here are some common problems associated with improper slopes:
Water Accumulation: A slope that directs water toward the foundation can lead to water pooling around the base of the building. This can result in hydrostatic pressure on the foundation walls, causing cracks and leaks.
Basement Flooding: Poor drainage due to an improper slope can lead to water seeping into the basement, causing flooding and water damage. This is a common problem in properties with negative slope (a slope that directs water toward the building).
Foundation Settlement: When the soil around the foundation becomes saturated with water, it can lead to soil expansion and contraction. This can cause uneven settlement of the foundation, resulting in cracks and structural damage.
Soil Erosion: An incorrect slope can lead to soil erosion, where the top layer of soil is washed away. This can destabilize the foundation and create voids under the foundation, leading to further settlement issues.
Landscape Damage: Poor slope design can also affect landscaping, leading to waterlogged lawns, plant damage, and erosion. Proper slope management enhances the aesthetics and functionality of outdoor spaces.
Solutions for Foundation Slope Issues
At Foundation Solutions, we offer a range of services to address foundation slope issues and ensure the stability and safety of your property. Here are some of the solutions we provide:
Foundation Grading and Regrading: Our experts assess the existing slope and make necessary adjustments to ensure proper grading. We create a slope that directs water away from the foundation, typically at a minimum slope of 5% (6 inches of fall per 10 feet).
French Drains and Drainage Systems: We install French drains and other drainage systems to manage water flow around the foundation. These systems collect and redirect water away from the foundation, preventing water accumulation and potential damage.
Soil Stabilization: In cases where soil erosion or instability is a concern, we offer soil stabilization services. This includes the use of retaining walls, terracing, and other methods to prevent soil movement and support the foundation.
Basement Waterproofing: To protect against water infiltration, we provide basement waterproofing solutions. This includes sealing cracks, installing vapor barriers, and applying waterproof coatings to the foundation walls.
Foundation Repair and Reinforcement: If the foundation has already suffered damage due to slope issues, we offer comprehensive repair and reinforcement services. This includes crack repair, underpinning, and the installation of helical piers or other support systems.
Landscaping and Erosion Control: We provide landscaping services that complement foundation slope solutions. This includes planting vegetation, installing erosion control mats, and designing drainage-friendly landscapes.

Case Study: Successful Foundation Slope Correction
A recent project involved a homeowner experiencing water accumulation around the foundation and basement flooding during heavy rains. Our team assessed the slope and found that the ground sloped towards the foundation, causing water to pool around the base. We regraded the slope to direct water away from the building, installed a French drain system, and waterproofed the basement walls. The result was a dry basement and a stable foundation. The homeowner was extremely satisfied with the outcome and appreciated our professionalism and attention to detail.

"An ideologically coherent Jewish left must reconsider the stories we have been told about safety, security and what it means to live without terror. We must take seriously the idea that none of us are free until all of us are free, and to understand that the “us” includes Palestinians. This means rejecting the supremacist logic of liberal Zionism, that it is possible to build a multicultural sovereign state where Jews are uniquely, legally entitled in ways that others are not. As a black Jew, I find it easy and rather natural to repudiate this premise, which has the same basis as American Jim Crow laws. Instead, a coherent Jewish left must return to core progressive Jewish values: standing with the oppressed, even if the face of the oppressor is Jewish. It is the duty of every Jew to do work mip’nei tikkun ha-olam, for the sake of repairing the world. We are commanded by Deuteronomy, Tzedek, Tzedek, tirdof, justice, justice you shall seek. The Jewish left must seek justice, peace and liberation for our Palestinian siblings. We must take seriously – as so many millennials my age did – the idea that “never again” means never again for anyone, ever."
Lessons of growing up black and Jewish
Many Jews of colour interpret Zionism through our experience with racism, and we recognise the supremacist logic that underpins it.

Note
Acacia, I shall be hitting you with a whole fruit salad.
I’m sorry but I do want to ask all of these. So please, take your time answering. 😅
🍒, 🍊, 🍑, 🍐, and 🍈?
Aww thank you so much, Erika! I really appreciate it. There's no need to apologize. I'd love to answer these for you. Thank you so much for sending them in. 🥰
🍒 What’s your favorite character dynamic to write? (Can be romantic or platonic, specific or general!)
I'm sure this will come as no surprise to you but I love to write brother relationships, especially in that sweet spot of they love each other deeply but the relationship between them is strained usually by external and/or internal forces and/or breakdowns in communication driving a wedge between them that makes it difficult to express how much they really care about each other. It's such a fascinating dynamic to me (I honestly don't know why, but I'm always so compelled by these kind of deeply loving but deeply broken relationships where you're looking at these fictional siblings and you just know how much they truly love each other but they just can't communicate that and can't overcome whatever it is that's tearing them apart.
(I'm going to ramble just a little bit here so please excuse me) For instance, you've got Finral and Langris who are driven apart by their own wounds & insecurities but also because they were pitted against each other by their parents and kind of had to see each other as adversaries in order to survive in their abusive home. Whereas Sanemi pushed his brother away to try to protect him and lashed out when Genya misunderstood and tried to prove himself by doing the exact thing his brother was trying to protect him from. Hero and Kel both pushed each other away because they were afraid of hurting each other. And don't even get me started about Kai and Sei because that is just... (I'm cutting myself off)
Anyway, the one underpinning thread here is that there is obviously real love between these siblings underneath all of that pain, strain, and brokeness in the relationship and therefore is a hope that they can overcome these obstacles and build a healthy bond with each other (whether that's again or, in some cases, for the first time). Even I have my limits though and there are some relationships that are clearly unhealthy and unsalvageable. When it's clear that their really is no mutual respect here and/or no potential for change or real love then I'm out. But those ones that are more nuanced where the relationship is just strained rather than permanently broken, I personally am very compelled by those and have a lot of hope of them being repaired. That's probably my favorite kind of relationship to write about.
I also love writing about platonic Male-Female friendships because I feel like those are criminally underrated.
🍊 Who’s a character you don’t write for that often, but keep meaning to write for more? (They’re so interesting! But maybe you have trouble pinning them down, or keep getting distracted by another blorbo…)
Gordon. I'm so sorry Gordon! He was honestly one of my favorite characters when I was watching and reading Black Clover, but he's just so hard for me to write that I've never really been able to do as much with him as I would've liked. I have half a story written from his POV for the Early Black Bulls Series but it was such a struggle that I just never finished it. I also considered making up an OC for him to marry in the future around the same time I was creating Lorelei for Henry (because he just seems like such a domestic type who'd be happy to settle down & have a family one day. Just such a loving Papa). But not a lot came of that. I name dropped his daughter (who is adopted) in one of my fics, but yeah...I really dropped the ball on poor Gordon. He deserves more love.
🍑 If you could make a connection between your favorite character and another work you care about (whether a crossover/fusion or a wonderfully “pretentious” literary reference) what would it be? How would it work?
My sister and I make jokes all the time about (a well-adjusted) Langris sort of "adopting" all the high-stress, overachieving perfectionist kiddos we tend to adopt ourselves from other media and becoming kind of father figure to them and trying to help them --convince them it's okay to have fun and that they don't have to be perfect all the time and try to "earn" love (usually with Finesse's help and/or by begging Vanessa to intervene because he has no idea what he's doing). And the kids really look up to him and think he's super cool. We call them the "Langris Squad." It's a little hard to explain but kind of wholesome in my mind.
🍐 Is there anything in canon that you absolutely hate and love to fix in fics? A wrong choice made, a fuck-up in characterization, a misunderstanding never cleared up, a conversation never shown onscreen, etc…
...that House Vaude Drama needs a resolution. I think especially for me (because I'm a biased Langris-sympathizer) something I always try to include in fics is just trying to kind of explain why in the world he is acting the way he is and is (weirdly enough) sort of helping Finral best him. It's strange from the outside (I have a lot of headcanons about it), so I really like to dive into Langris' emotions, thoughts, and motivations about what's going on there since it was really abrupt and glossed over in the actual canon. Also, again, I like to resolve this mess when I can. (Not always in the same way because there are multiple resolutions which would be fine, but I don't really care for the way it has been handled in the canon).
Another one that comes to mind is the aftermath of the Golden Dawn losing so much of their squad in the fight against Zenon. I know that was a while ago, but it still irks me that we didn't get to see a whole of them grieving and trying to rebuild. Yuno had a really great and heart-wrenching moment about it in the Spade Arc when he tapped into his grief to motivate him during his rematch against Zenon, but I feel like there's a lot of untapped potential there, especially for Mimosa who unlocks such a powerful healing ability that she could use to save other people during the Spade Arc but couldn't use to save her own squad mates. I can't imagine how hard that is for her, and I was actually so frustrated this got glossed over that I wrote a story about it called "For What It's Worth" which unfortunately I think was written in the time before Tumblr and never made it over here. Maybe I'll cross post it, if you (or anyone else is interested)?
🍈 Who’s your blorbo and what are some of your favorite headcanons/ideas about them that repeatedly show up in your fics? Free pass to rant about blorbo opinions.
From Black Clover, Langris. Hands down. He was not always (and I detested him at first), but he's definitely the character I find most interesting now. I just want him and Finral to repair their brotherly relationship so much! It's what I have wanted most out of Black Clover for a very long time. I also really enjoy his friendship with Yuno and especially with Lady Finesse.
I have way too many headcanons about him, but I think the biggest one that comes up the most and has the most bearing over how I write his character is that Langris loves so much more intensely and deeply than he is given credit for. He struggles to be vulnerable and doesn't open his heart to too many people, but when he does, he will love forever and will be willing to make great sacrifices for what is best for that person and what will make them happy.
My most strongly held Langris headcanon is that it is the love that he has for Finesse that has led him to try to help Finral take over House Vaude. I flip-flop a lot over whether it is a romantic or platonic love, but regardless, I am convinced that however you want to qualify that, Langris loves her and is so concerned with her happiness that he would willingly give up what's he has worked for his entire life, his sense of purpose, and, really, his own sense of identity (in a way) just in the off chance that Finesse would be happy. And even more than that...would be happy without him. This is not a sacrifice to get the girl. This is a purely selfless action. He knows if he does this, he will lose everything and they will never be together, but he doesn't care because what he wants more than all of that is for Finesse to be happy and he doesn't think he can be the one to make her happy, so that's why he counts himself out.
