*Sans was in the middle of explaining the multiverse to Papyrus, but full-stops when he receives this ask. He sighs and scratches his head. Papyrus looks at him, but Sans just waves his hand, like 'don't worry bro, I got this'*

"this's very important to talk 'bout, so imma explain as briefly but clearly as possible."

*Sans cracks his knuckles, sitting up, leaning closer to the screen. Its serious time.*

"ya'see, the kid has what is known as 'Dissociative Identity Disorder' or 'DID.' what that means, from what Alphys explained to us, is that because of trauma, their mind created other people to share the body, memories, and burdens. A defense mechanism, if ya will. And 'fore you ask, these other people aren't delusions or hallucinations - theyre real. its like having a conjoined twin, except the twin is inside your head."

*he rubs his forehead, leaning back once again. seems this topic...its a bit difficult for him.*

"Frisk's brain created people that look and sound like their old friends - probably cuz thats what Frisk's subconscious desired, and what made em feel safe. but those people in their head, while looking like their friends, are not the same people. half of em dont even use the same names or pronouns as the people they are 'based on'. and almost all of em have entirely different personalities than the human kids did. so at most, theyre dopplegangers."

*he sighs and closes his eyes. Papyrus waits for a moment, as if checking to see if he's finished speaking, before he pipes up*

*Papyrus fidgets with his gloves, tugging at the fingers individually*

"I FULLY UNDERSTAND THAT, AS YOU ARE THEIR FRIENDS, YOU HAVE CURIOSITY AND CONCERN FOR THEM! SO YOUR PERSONAL QUESTIONS DO NOT OFFEND ME OR MY BROTHER. BUT THEY MAY HURT FRISK. SO, IF I MAY REQUEST, PLEASE REFRAIN FROM ASKING FRISK DIRECTLY ABOUT IT. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE, DEAR FRIENDS!"

(What Sans is explaining is a factive. A factive is a headmate that formed based on a real person; a friend, a family member, a celebrity, etc, etc. Of course, that doesnt mean they are exact copies of that person - they have their own thoughts and feelings, separate from the person they are based on. "yeah. it was quite the party."

"AS FOR FEELINGS...UNFORTUNATELY, THE GREAT PAPYRUS DOES NOT HAVE ANYONE TO LAY UPON HIS AFFECTIONS. AT LEAST, NOT ROMANTICALLY! BUT I ASSURE YOU, SOMEDAY, THAT SHALL CHANGE!"

*Sans chuckles and looks at Papyrus mischeviously. Papyrus narrows his eye-sockets, knowing whats coming next*

"don'tya have a crush on that microwave-guy?"

"SANS! HIS NAME IS METTATON! YOU KNOW THIS! AND YES...THAT NEW BODY HE DEBUTED WAS QUITE A SEXY ONE! THOUGH I FOUND HIS PREVIOUS FORM JUST AS ATTRACTIVE!"

"heh. of course. you like people for their souls, not their appearances."

"INDEED! AND HE HAS...QUITE THE PERSONALITY! NOW, AS FOR SANS, HE DOES NOT HAVE ANY PARTNERS...THOUGH MY BROTHERLY INSTINCTS DETECT A CRUSH."

*Sans winks*

"maybe you're right, bro. but as Paps said; i ain't in a relationship. not planning on tryin' anytime soon. last one i was in didn't end too well."

*...an awkward silence fills the room. Sweat drips down Sans skull...he is realizing his mistake...a minute goes by without anybody saying anything...until...*

*It takes a moment for Cupid to understand what Stella is talking about...but once they do, they slowly put down the puzzle pieces, and hug back. They look at the photos on the wall...contemplating...and then mouth a response*

'I know...it wasn't theirs, either...' *their grip against Stella tightens* 'The only people at fault are the people who killed them...'

*Tears well up in their eyes, and they wipe them away hastefully, before they can drip down. They dont like the sensation of tears on their face.*

Sword Frisk: *Stella floats down and plays with their hair ruffling their hair. Not in a messy way but in a comforting playful way* Cute little bean~ You’re so adorable. And it’s sweet you think of me as your idol~ *giggles*

*Frisk looks up at them, eyes wide and sparkling. They immediately lunge at them to give them a hug. They whisper-shout, which is the equivalent of yelling in their terms*

"You came back!"

*They giggle and do a happy-twirl while hugging Stella. They are pretty strong for their age, so they have no problem swinging them around.*

"Does this mean we are friends???" *they whisper excitedly*

*They bury their face into Stella's shoulder. Meanwhile, Papyrus was putting the newly-sorted dough-pieces into the oven. He turns around...*

Monsters: Reproduction & Relationships

This applies to all our AUs: not just Defining Happiness & Droughtale.

Its a long lore-dump, but honestly, we're really proud of the details ^^ A lot of thought was put into this.

Reproduction:

Monsters of any gender and sex can create children together. Sexual activity is not required to create children, however many monsters have sex for fun with their romantic partners.  

The first (and most common) way for monsters to create a child is to perform a magical ritual, using any excess magic produced by their souls. All souls involved temporarily merge together, and create a new mini-soul, which attaches itself to whatever parent has better health and/or less LOVE. That is how monster pregnancy begins and how monster babies are made.  

The ritual can also be performed between monsters and a human, but humans cannot perform this with other humans, since only Monsters are born with the magic that makes the ritual possible. 

The second way is by mixing their souls together. Mixing of souls is usually only done if a disabled Monster needs to borrow magic from a loved one, which is a very serious medical procedure. It usually can be done without resulting in pregnancy of any kind…however, If the amount of magic being used is not being monitored properly, excess magic may result in an unexpected pregnancy as an after-effect. It is the only way Monsters have had accidental pregnancies. 

Because sexual activity is not required to create a child, a decent number of monsters choose to have children together platonically. Friends, siblings, and cousins are known to create children together and co-parent.

Up to five parents can create a child together. More than that is risky and sometimes even five is too much. Its best for monsters to be medically checked before trying to create a child to see how much magic output they have. If their magic output combined is too high or too low, creating a baby could cause disabilities and deformities to grow in the child. 

Pregnancy/Eggs:

Whether or not a monster lays eggs or gets pregnant depends on their monster-type.

Monsters that are avian, amphibian, reptilian, and aquatic lay eggs. Monsters that are mammalian or elemental get pregnant.

If they are a combination of mammalian/elemental and one of the other categories, it could go either way.

When a monster baby is forming, a shield is created to protect the soul. This can be seen in monster-eggs, as the shells are made-of this shield. Rarely, it can be seen in mammalian/elementals, under specific circumstances. For example, mammalian Skeletons (such as Sans/Papyrus, a humanoid-skeleton) do not have a natural stomach in place, so the magical-shield presents itself as a make-shift stomach.

Menstruation:

All monsters (regardless of their sex) “menstruate” their excess magic every month upon hitting puberty (unless they are infertile.) Monster menstruation is more painful than human menstruation, due to their menstruation being tied to their soul rather than an organ, which is the biggest downside to monster reproduction.

Symptoms of monster menstruation may include paralyzing cramps, muscle contractions (or pseudo-muscle contractions, for monsters that don’t have muscles), soul contractions, vomiting, delusions, dissociation, derealization, migraines, and physical illness. Monster menstruation typically lasts four-five days.

Attraction/Relationships:

Because Monster's soul traits are hope, compassions, and love, the way they perceive and enact relationships is oftentimes different from humans.

For one, polyamory is more common in Monsters than it is in humans. About 50% of monsters are polyamorous, 20% are ambiamorous, and 30% are monogamous.

Another thing that is more common in Monsters is queer-attraction. 70% of monsters are non-straight (gay, bi, pan, omni, poly, abro, etc) or non-allosexual (aro, ace, greyro, greyace, etc).

Platonix/Plataro (Queerplatonic)

Queerplatonic relationships (QPRs) are more common for Monsters to partake in than humans.

Monsters, however, were unaware of the human-given title "queerplatonic" (as they were underground when this term was created), so they titled these bonds as "Platonix" or "Plataro" relationships.

Soul-Binds

Soul-Binds, while sometimes comparable to QPRs, are separate from QPRs.

Soul-binds can be described as a “platonic marriage” for humans understanding. It is the act of binding souls, for a lifelong platonic partnership between two (or more) monsters.

Monsters with soul-binds oftentimes share homes and create children.

Unlike QPRs, Soul-Binds can be performed between siblings, cousins, or otherwise related Monsters.

QPRs between relatives, on the other hand, would be incestual, as they are more than platonic, and may include intimate acts such as dates, intense kissing, and sometimes even sexual behavior, which is unacceptable between relatives.

"Okay!" they kiss Stella's cheek, seeming to do so instinctually, "Of all of them, I've known Anders longest. I met him in Kindergarten! He's ten. He was my first crush!" *they giggle* "He's really good at styling hair and makeup! His uncle is a drag queen, so he learned from him. He would do all of our outfits when we got ready for church on Sunday!"

*They continue putting together the puzzle, speeding up rapidly the more they speak*

"And then Lucielle! She's the youngest of us. She's eight. Her parents give her lots of allowance money. After school, she always took us to Tobies- which is a restaurant her Grandpa owns! She'd buy us drinks, and we'd all share three orders of fries and chicken strips! She wants to work there with her Grandpa when she grows up! I bet she would have loved to see Grillbys..."

*They look a bit sad for a moment...but shake it off, and continue*

"Wish is my age! He's only older than me by exactly nine days! We were even born at the same time- 9:52! Isn't that crazy?" they giggle, "He is in taekwondo and boxing! So he is really strong. He's the fastest kid in school! He's won the school race the last two years!"

*they clap their hands together excitedly - they seem very proud of him. Stella gets the feeling they were there cheering him on from the sidelines in every activity he was doing*

"Me, Wish, Lucielle, and Angelica met during the school play! Angelica was in charge of it - they convinced the school to open drama club! She acts a lot. She carries around a camera around and films mini-movies with us! Its really fun! She took all those pictures!" *they gesture to the wall of photos*

"Angelica was best friends with Malo, so she introduced us! He fit in our group right away. He's a huge bookworm! Which is nice, because he reads stories to us! He's also the one who suggested our promise..."

*they look at Stella, a mix of grief and love on their expression*

"...We promised to be together forever...and have a family together when we grew older."

*They lean further into Stella. Theres a moment of silence as they consider everything...slowly, their eyes turn ruby red, and their cheeks gain a pink tint...it seems Chara is helping them speak. They still speak in a whisper, but their throat isn't strained anymore.*

"I'll start with Navaeh, because her hair looked like yours...she moved from London two years ago so she has a pretty accent!"

*they swoon, blushing and giggling- their sadness seems to dissipate the more they talk*

"She makes comic books. She's always wanted to be a comic-creator when she grows up. Her art is really good for her age! Shes eleven. She was my first kiss, too! Though don't tell my mommys. Theyll be mad for kissing someone while so young."

*...they don't seem to notice that theyre talking about her in present-tense. Its probably best not to point it out. They look down at the puzzle and point at an empty space*

"...Can you help me find the piece that goes here?"
