where: holly cottage when: before the raid on Ottery St. Catchpole with: @unbearablyblack
She’s got Harry with the Weasleys, because she’s determined to sit here all night if that’s what it takes to corner Sirius fucking Black. News travels fast when there are only a dozen voices to hear it, and she knows there’s going to be a mission, and that isn’t necessarily sanctioned, and everyone who knows anything about it is giving her that look they get when they see her as Mother Potter, Poor Woman Can’t Go Anywhere Without the Babe, and she wants to be furious that she can’t go along except she can’t so she’s furious at Amelia for organizing it instead.
And furious at Sirius for going.
Her husband’s best friend, her son’s godfather, running headfirst into battle despite being on the fence about the Order for as long as James had been alive. She wants to believe that they’re not still grieving, that this is just about Finding the Truth or whatever, but honestly--Lily can’t even think straight anymore. She knows Sirius is dipping their toes in dangerous waters. And without James here to guide them--or even Remus now--she’s terrified that it’s not going to take long before they jump right in. Head-fucking-first.
She’s got tea in front of her but it went cold thirty minutes ago and she hasn’t bothered to drink it in twenty. Sirius is going to have to walk through their kitchen eventually--it’s right beside the door, after all--and she’s just going to wait here until they do.

time: evening, the day before the Ottery St. Catchpole mission place: holly cottage ( @unbearablyblack )
It’s strange to think that, if things had gone differently, he might not even know about the mission being planned, secret and quiet, under Kingsley’s nose. If he hadn’t come across Amelia that morning, hadn’t heard her insist that going to Ottery St Catchpole was the only way forward, hadn’t helped her fine-tune the plan she’d been brewing up in that head of hers... there were still people here, in the village, ignorant of what was happening.
If things had gone differently, he wouldn’t have known that Sirius was going.
But he does. And it’s the anxiety of that, eating away at him from the inside, that brings him to their shared room when he knows Sirius is still there, something he hasn’t done in weeks. Not so much the anxiety of the mission being dangerous, of Sirius getting hurt but... of Sirius doing something reckless. Of Sirius chasing James, finally, somewhere Remus can’t afford to follow. Of someone else getting hurt because of it.
He knocks on the door frame, the door partially open already, to get Sirius’ attention before he walks in. It’s weird, to knock on his own door, but it feels weirder to enter Sirius’ personal space uninvited just now.
‘Hey, d’you have a minute?’
