1 Kings 12: Jeroboam Returns To Israel From Egypt
1 Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone there to make him king.
2 When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard this (he was still in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon), he returned from Egypt.
3 So they sent for Jeroboam, and he and the whole assembly of Israel went to Rehoboam and said to him:
4 “Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but now lighten the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.”
5 Rehoboam answered, “Go away for three days and then come back to me.” So the people went away.
6 Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How would you advise me to answer these people?” he asked.
7 They replied, “If today you will be a servant to these people and serve them and give them a favorable answer, they will always be your servants.”
8 But Rehoboam rejected the advice the elders gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him.
9 He asked them, “What is your advice? How should we answer these people who say to me, ‘Lighten the yoke your father put on us’?”
10 The young men who had grown up with him replied, “These people have said to you, ‘Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but make our yoke lighter.’ Now tell them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist.
11 My father laid on you a heavy yoke; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.’”
12 Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam, as the king had said, “Come back to me in three days.”
13 The king answered the people harshly. Rejecting the advice given him by the elders,
14 he followed the advice of the young men and said, “My father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.”
15 So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from the Lord, to fulfill the word the Lord had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah the Shilonite.
16 When all Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, they answered the king:
“What share do we have in David,     what part in Jesse’s son? To your tents, Israel!     Look after your own house, David!”
So the Israelites went home.
17 But as for the Israelites who were living in the towns of Judah, Rehoboam still ruled over them.
18 King Rehoboam sent out Adoniram, who was in charge of forced labor, but all Israel stoned him to death. King Rehoboam, however, managed to get into his chariot and escape to Jerusalem.
19 So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.
20 When all the Israelites heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel. Only the tribe of Judah remained loyal to the house of David.
21 When Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem, he mustered all Judah and the tribe of Benjamin—a hundred and eighty thousand able young men—to go to war against Israel and to regain the kingdom for Rehoboam son of Solomon.
22 But this word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God:
23 “Say to Rehoboam son of Solomon king of Judah, to all Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people,
24 ‘This is what the Lord says: Do not go up to fight against your brothers, the Israelites. Go home, every one of you, for this is my doing.’” So they obeyed the word of the Lord and went home again, as the Lord had ordered.
Golden Calves at Bethel and Dan
25 Then Jeroboam fortified Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim and lived there. From there he went out and built up Peniel.
26 Jeroboam thought to himself, “The kingdom will now likely revert to the house of David.
27 If these people go up to offer sacrifices at the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem, they will again give their allegiance to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah. They will kill me and return to King Rehoboam.”
28 After seeking advice, the king made two golden calves. He said to the people, “It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”
29 One he set up in Bethel, and the other in Dan.
30 And this thing became a sin; the people came to worship the one at Bethel and went as far as Dan to worship the other.
31 Jeroboam built shrines on high places and appointed priests from all sorts of people, even though they were not Levites.
32 He instituted a festival on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, like the festival held in Judah, and offered sacrifices on the altar. This he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves he had made. And at Bethel he also installed priests at the high places he had made.
33 On the fifteenth day of the eighth month, a month of his own choosing, he offered sacrifices on the altar he had built at Bethel. So he instituted the festival for the Israelites and went up to the altar to make offerings.

Ain't One Thing
Ain't one thing which ain't hunky or the unhunky infatuation that lasts and is the last thing we'd admit, some slinking extension of a system one wears to slink and the face not an objective dream but immediately infinitely slurpable, the teeming nearby river pointless and unanointed, and one slick and shifty so-and-so gets all our attention, because what else are we going to notice?

This possession-illness has a great time depth in South Africa, having been observed and recorded by some of the earliest European travelers and missionaries, including Callaway (1870), Shooter (1857), and Kidd (1904). A number of stereotyped symptoms announce the appearance of the disease in an apparently healthy individual, usually at a time of emotional crisis. He or she may experience loss of appetite or develop unusual food preferences. There are complaints of aches and pains in different parts of the body; the affected becomes morose and may go about constantly weeping, and he is plagued by dreams ("He becomes a house of dreams" Callaway 1870:260). The dreams, too, are generally stereotyped. The most frequently occurring subject seems to be water, especially rivers and floods, and the dreamer may see himself being carried away by such a current. Dreams of wild animals and personal death occur as well, and some see crowds of people who may be threatening to harm the dreamer.
Agitated, unable to sleep or eat, the man or woman may disappear altogether. After a time the individual returns, looking totally mad and disheveled after wandering about the land searching for roots and herbs seen in dreams. He may also have a snake draped about his neck, for snakes are believed to harbor the shades of ancestors. He becomes emaciated, his unanointed skin dry, and he is "incited by the spirits to leap over hedges and ditches, or even at times to bellow like a bull" (Krige 1936:301). Throughout this period of illness, which may last for several years, a number of diviners may be brought in to determine the cause, but the symptoms are not always immediately recognized as signs of spirit possession. The coming of convulsions, however, the use of snuff, the resulting sneezing and recurring yawning, belching, and passing of gas indicate that a spirit has entered the victim's body and wishes him to become a diviner. Some recent accounts describe how, during a fugue state, the possessed somehow finds himself at the household of an established diviner. The flight serves to establish both the diagnosis of the condition and identity of the person who will cure the condition and initiate the possessed into the ways of diviners (Lee 1970:135; Cole 1967:154).
illness leading you to a diviner for a cure, which can only be cured by becoming a diviner! just like the hmong shamans! i wonder if there's a word for this kind of thing. it seems so specific, but i feel like if you see it twice it must be true elsewhere. perhaps cf mental troubles leading one to going to seminary?

The Sun — just touched the Morning
The Sun — just touched the Morning —
The Morning — Happy thing —
Supposed that She had come to dwell —
And Life would all be Spring!
.
She felt herself supremer —
A Raised — Ethereal Thing!
Henceforth — for Her — What Holiday!
Meanwhile — Her wheeling King —
Trailed — slow — along the Orchards —
Her haughty — spangled Hems —
Leaving a new necessity!
The want of Diadems!
.
The Morning — fluttered — staggered —
Felt feebly — for Her Crown —
Her unanointed forehead —
Henceforth — Her only One!
Emily Dickinson
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Laura,
Everyday you grace me with your beautiful smile,
Your loveliness brings a tear to my eye.
Everyday you touch my Soul,
As your words make me whole
Everyday your words are my sunrise,
You are the sunshine in my eyes!
Everyday your love shines upon my face,
Like the sun warms my face, taking me to my happy place.
Laura, you are so beautiful and ever present.
I am so thankful, you are heaven sent.
Your Love is as steady and constant
in my heart, as the daily sunrise.
I am so blessed to have you in me,
In my heart and in my Soul
I love you deeply, Laura ❤️❤️❤️❤️

# Hymn for the Unanointed
Crystal-crusted ashtray morgues beneath fluorescents that autopsy the midnight air,
Cigarette butts cathedral toward heaven while filter-tips genocide their way through smoke-thick dark,
Divinity needles itself into existence, prophecies burning between fingers that track-mark salvation—
Gray matter of prayers that overdose into flame, midnight-ing their way toward morning,
Lipstick-stains hemorrhage themselves across porcelain while loneliness executes the dawn.
Winnipeg skies cancer themselves purple, tumoring above neon-wounded streets,
Aurora boreals through smog that nooses itself into constellations of artificial stars,
While in veterinary rooms that slaughterhouse their sterile prophecies into being,
Rottweiler eyes massacre themselves into darkness, soul-ing toward infinite,
Crime: wolf-blood ancestors that fang through domestication, rabies-ing past civilization's cage.
I library through marble halls where dust motes HIV between shelves,
Ceiling tiles waterboard their decay while copper gangrenes itself into poetry,
Card catalogs suicide themselves into memory, wooden drawers dirging their final alphabets.
Books corpse themselves in corners, pages metastasizing into mold-bloom gardens,
Spine-cracked prophets bible their wisdom into emptiness that echoes itself terminal.
My love bedrooms his dreams sixth-floor high, while radiators percussion winter into withdrawal,
His breath metronomes darkness into music, lunging time toward flatline,
I language myself toward invisible while rejection letters phoenix into new wounds,
Far from prizes that laurel themselves onto worthier throats,
Art-making itself into existence in spaces that margin between needle and need.
City nights weapon themselves around fire escapes that gallows toward stars,
Perhaps this moment-ing of breath, this vein-fingering of truth enough—
Urban decay sanctifies through sidewalk-cracks where concrete abattoirs itself alive,
Grit consecrates subway walls that genocide themselves into prayers,
While God overdoses in crystal-crusted ashtrays, and we martyr ourselves clean.

For the unanointed, the previous record highs were in the range of 12,000, marking the top of the pollen count forecast range (0-12). This is literally off the charts. At around 9,000, even people without allergies can feel the effects. Breathing in this much fine particulate is harmful to your health. Please keep a quality mask or four handy not just for covid but for other airborne health risks like dust, smoke, pollen, and more.

There's plenty of reasons to wear a mask. Please do it, for your sake and for everyone else's.

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for August 18
Tozer in the Morning Responding to the Wake-Up Call
There is also spiritual sleep. Notice Ephesians 5:14: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead." This verse is often spoken to sinners, but it was not written to sinners. Ephesians was never written to sinners. It is not a message to sinners at all, but a message to one of the best churches in the New Testament. Yet the writer says, "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." Some of the Ephesians were in a somnolent condition; that is, they were morally good but unenlightened. They were religious but unanointed. It is perfectly possible for a good, faithful, loyal church member to be spiritually asleep--being in a spiritual state that parallels natural sleep. When your husband, your wife, your child, your relative, your friend or you go to sleep tonight, the fact that you are unconscious and out of the running for a while is not bothering y ou. You know that normally you will wake up again. You are not dead, but you are cut off from your environment, all but that which is reflex--breathing and a few other things. Likewise it is possible to be a Christian, to be in the church and yet be asleep spiritually. Then you have to be wakened suddenly. You will probably be ashamed of yourself, angry with yourself, frustrated and disconcerted and say, "What's the matter with me? All this time I was almost awake, but not quite."
Tozer in the Evening Harmonious Living
This brief list does not at all exhaust the number of infirmities we are likely to find in the Christian assembly. Who has not had to bear lovingly with a brother (or sister) who is afflicted with logorrhea, the incurable propensity to talk without pause or punctuation? That the talk is "religious" does not make it the less painful. And the unstable brother who spends his time either falling or getting up again, who is either leaping for joy or lying face down bewailing his hard lot--what church is there that does not have one or two such believers in it? Then there is the Mark Twain of the holy place, whose testimonies must always have their element of alleged humor; and to offset him somewhat is the man of heavy countenance who cannot smile and to whom a pleasantry is a mortal sin. Add to this list the sister whose prayers are accusations against the church or self-pitying complaints about the way she is being treated by other members of the flock.
What shall we do about these infirm brothers and sisters? If we deal with them according to their deserts, we may crush them beyond recovery. The thing to do is to accept them as crosses and bear them for Jesus' sake. In the great day when we have become like our Lord and have left all imperfections behind, we will not be sorry we endured patiently the infirmities of the weak.

Every Living Thing
Every living thing is sacred, whether it is within our understanding or not
Any Living Thing We like our definitions to hold a rigid understanding to exclude all we do not want to accept We like our gods to share our same opinions molding and shaping the divine into the unanointed We forget the ultimate holiness –within every single creation without any limit or exclusion –it is only love for any living thing It is only love that heals and begins to build bridges…

they lose so much, she hears, when the world comes to rapture. that those who were blessed had been risen from the dead, that their thirst for human flesh was simply a desire to spread god's word. oh! alice grows up in a MADHOUSE, doesn't she? they're impure, as people, you see. that's why they simply could not join the hordes. you had to search, within yourself. to find that true desire and true motivation of what you wished for in life, and then and only then! could you be exulted. alice, then, had played the role of their priestess, the girl who could see, the witch of the woods, or perhaps simply someone's forgotten child. who knew? all that matters is... everything changes all at once. alice, who hadn't found herself yet laid down by those agents of god, found herself wrapped up and pulled away from what home she knew. set free, all too suddenly...
into a BRAVE NEW WORLD.
and what had her time away done but taught her that she was ever curious of all that the world had to offer. there were so many here that were unanointed! but in their eyes, the world lives in a new frame, and alice, she shifts her thinking. why? well, simply because of course! because she was here, and in this land, this space, so full of WONDER, she meets new friends, her, the other orphans and misfits of the woods, they're plucked from their life and given new things... and alice, she's oh so determined! perhaps things are different, but couldn't they still live, oh, so truly to their hearts? now wasn't that something... as secure within chain link fences as they'd been out there, but, ah, hasn't she met the most oddly interesting people since?
Tumblr media
shane's always been nice. helpful, the way she knows the elders could be too. eyes bright, for a life that still felt it to her. all doors and locks with shane, it was, but she takes to his attention and to his care all too happily, he always had something NEW to teach her, show her, tell her. alice, who's starved for information! finds it all too lovely, even though there are moments where it hits her, doesn't it? even in places like this, bleached warm by the sun. she wonders. what happens to the elders in the woods? the people she knew? the anointed that walk this earth out there? what happened to what had once been her solid ground? all these things that she might never yet again know. it stings. it aches.
"these past months have been a torment."
funny guy shane, he just takes it on the chin. alice blinking, that pause held. everyone talks as if what happened before, the life before, the life that was, wasn't... quite real. it's enough to make a girl go mad, isn't it? the thought of what didn't slip the way it ought to, into place. "what do you mean?" scared, oh, wasn't this the torment? the worry, the FRUSTRATION? "does this mean we're never going back?"

@redemptioninterlude asked: these past months have been a torment.
Pride and Prejudice (2005) Prompts. || Alice Liddell
Alone to her thoughts and the company of bird calls, little Alice was a child unlike any other that Shane had come to know. Blonde tresses that rested on the paleness of her shoulders, blue eyes so kind but always with the appearance of being lost someplace else, from a cult did she wander from. United in their faith and sworn to loyalty, practically danced in a horde of the undead, sang their songs and raised their hands to the skies. Rescued by those who had survived Atlanta, the bombing and flame that claimed so many, Shane had taken an interest in Alice since she first arrived. Curious by her and the way of her glance - sweetness that coupled well with the other children of the group, somewhat older than they but just as playful. Alice proved herself to be smart and wise beyond her years. Always at the ready to assist, fingers and hands committed to their work, her mouth pictured to warm smile, genuine and bright.
Seated next to her while he worked to untangle fishing line from a rod, nothing more than a sturdy stick and half-dried glue, Shane's attention shifted. Suddenly serious, more than she had ever been since her first day at the camp, the expression on her face somber and humorless. Posture straightened from within a lawn chair, faded emerald green and bleached by the sunshine, the smell of fire-roasted perch delicious and strong, seasoned with basil and bay leaves. Shane had never seen Alice to be so. Stern; as if some part of her broke from its shackles, made itself known despite her own knowledge. A piece of her buried deep, beneath whatever her previous home and family had told her, taught her and dared to influence. Brows brought together, lines around his face pronounced, Shane sincere though his hands continued to finish what he started, one knot loosened.
"Heck, kid. I know."
Shane replied, his focus moved between both Alice and his line, watchful and concerned, the countenance of a father. "What you've been through, that ain't easy. Ain't like the rest of the world has been much better, either. But, hey, Alice, let me tell you somethin'. You ain't ever gonna be back in a life like that again. You see here, you're one of us. Everybody in this group - me, Glenn, Carol, everybody - we're gonna look after you, keep you safe. You don't have to worry no more. I know life ain't what it used to be, but we're all here for you now, okay? Listen, you ever have a problem, you come find me. Anybody bothers you, does somethin' to you, heck, if you just need somebody to talk to, you get me. You don't have to be scared, Alice. Ain't nothin' gonna torment you no more, got it?"
