Excerpt: Vayu

As Tilly climbed up the maintenance shaft, the ship continued shaking and rolling from damage, continued attacks, and Una’s hairpin turns, throwing Tilly’s body backwards and forwards and side to side again and again. Twice she lost her hand and foot holds on the rails and slid down the access ladder, her heart pounding as she frantically grabbed for anything that could arrest her fall. Once she plunged down two decks before hooking an arm around the ladder’s vertical support and wrenching her previously dislocated shoulder. Hanging there like a spider swinging in the wind attached to safety by only a hair’s width thread, Tilly commanded her body to relax and practiced the combat breathing technique Pike taught her while they were sheltering in the cave.

Mercifully, the ship’s movement ceased, and she was able to scramble to the top of the shaft and manually open the doors at the back of the bridge. But the Vayu’s pitch remained dangerously off axis.

Malie shouted, “Computer execute gamma-theta-omega12.”

A minute later Una shouted, “The Klingon ship is retreating. But why? They had us dead to rights.”

“There is no one there?” Saru asked again, this time his voice trailed up an octave. “Are you confident this is the cave they sheltered in?”

Once Stamets regained consciousness, he proved well enough to jump Discovery from the location of the suspected but ultimately false third signal back to the planet on which Pike and Tilly were stranded. Immediately afterwards Tracy Pollard returned the engineer to Sickbay for additional rest, batteries of tests, and treatment. Scans confirmed the geometric storm had abated, Discovery settled into orbit and an away team was dispatched to the surface.

“Yes,” Michael answered. “There are stacks of firewood as well as Federation supplies,” she added with a note of hope in her voice. That brief feeling quickly faded as her report continued, “It is unclear whether these are the supplies Discovery beamed down before leaving orbit or supplies from the shuttle we sent later. We found an ensign’s uniform jacket, most likely Tilly’s. And … there is blood on it. The emergency medical kits as well as the food and water are consumed. And …”

“Continue,” Saru ordered.

Michael straightened before delivering her last piece of information, “Neither the Captain nor Tilly are here. Nor have we found any human remains.”

Excerpt: Hiten guided Pike until they were standing in the middle of the Vayu’s small bridge. “Christopher, Una’s in front of you manning the helm, Malie’s on sensors to your left, comms officer is to your right, I will handle the weapons console behind you.”

Pike tugged at the hem of his uniform jacket which he insisted on donning before reaching the ship’s command center. Someone on the Vayu had cleaned it and repaired the wear and tear from the past few rough days. Perhaps it’s silly, he thought, but wearing it at least I feel like a functioning captain even if I cannot see anything other than very bright light.

“Number One, location of the Klingon ships? And us?” Pike asked. After Una reported the information, he committed the coordinates and current direction of the three enemy ships and the Vayu to memory constructing an internal tactical display. “Speed?”

“All three cruisers are traveling at one quarter impulse; the Vayu is matching that,” she answered.

On the map in Pike’s mind, three blips representing the enemy vessels began creeping in different directions. “Why so slow?” Pike mused as he considered. “Ah. Of course. They’re planning to surround cutting off any retreat … after toying with us first.”

As Pike slowly became conscious, he felt the warmth of the nearby fire and counted one, two, three, and … yes, four, distinct voices conversing. That’s everyone. He sent a silent thank you out into the unknowable. Their conversation was casual, punctuated here and there with teasing and laughter. He heard movement, but it didn’t sound frantic or rushed. All are safe and well, he concluded. A vague memory surfaced of unresponsive arms and hands bound together. He flexed his hands and fingers, stretched his arms and legs. Nothing felt abnormal. Gingerly he sat up and leaned against the wall. A coughing fit left him sagging against that wall and inhaling deeply, trying to draw in a full breath.

Pike opened his eyes. He saw only charcoal grey. So the blindness wasn’t a nightmare. He carefully felt around his body, exploring the immediate environment.

Bonnie looked up when Reno and Detmer reentered the tent. At first light, both had resumed searching for Pike. The sad looks on their faces and the frustration in their eyes squashed her hopes. “What do we do now?” the nurse asked.

Each gratefully took the coffee Bonnie handed them as Reno answered tiredly, “Return to the cave, check on Tilly. Plan our next steps.”

“Are you sure sir? In these conditions, without supplies and exposed to the elements, the Captain won’t survive much longer,” Bonnie countered.

Reno put a hand on the young woman’s shoulder. “I know this is hard, but yes, we have to leave. He’s not in the immediate vicinity and we are low on supplies.”

“But what if he wandered into an area after you had already searched it? Shouldn’t we look one more time?” Bonnie pleaded.

“The odds are against that and right now we have to play the percentages,” Reno responded, feeling impatient and trying to use a tone of voice that soothed the callous sounding words.

The three suns reached their zenith at midday. Their combined bright light increased the pain in his eyes and Pike blinked trying to clear the platinum spots swimming in his vision. With the bright light, the snowy white landscape, and almost total blindness, discerning landmarks proved impossible.

He tested half a meter in front of him with the walking stick. The ground felt solid. Repeated the test on the left and then the right. Satisfied he was still on solid ground Pike took a step. Tested again. Stepped again. Repeat. Repeat.

The bottle of water saved him from dire consequences, but dehydration, and its resulting confusion and sluggishness remain a problem. Twice he stopped himself from moving without testing the ground in every direction.

In no universe or network, mycelial or otherwise, do these instructions permit a visit to engineering, the spore farm, nor work of any shape or kind. Don’t make me outfit you with a remote monitor,” she issued a final warming with a finger wag before leaving.

“This gives me time to fix the ship up before you break it again,” Reno observed.

“Perhaps it is of interest, and I remind you, you are present here today because I jumped this ship despite the peril to my well-being,” Stamets retorted with a snort.

Reno sat back in her seat and cocked her head to one side. “Hmmm, yes, well done you. I must admit that was appreciated. Yet …”

Their mutual interest in flora and fauna had deepened into friendship and was now, perhaps, after a few low-key dates, she hoped, morphing into a romance.

They had not spoken since Discovery had to leave the Captain and Ensign Tilly behind on the planet. Since the rescue mission that ended in a disaster. Since their jump in pursuit of the third signal.

She was having an argument with herself.

Don’t bother him.

But maybe he needs someone to talk to.

He has a staff. A staff that can give him actual information that is useful.

But he doesn’t have to be strong and resolute with me.

Yes, he does. You are a member of his crew, and this ship is facing an emergency.

That’s not fair, he cannot be expected to be strong all the time.

“Were they prepared to camp at the search site?”

Tilly nodded and then remembered to use her words, “Yes.”

“Alright, we assume they will not return until tomorrow. Let’s get setup for the night. You have to be my eyes. Where is the hypothermia medical kit? It’s the backpack with the blue stripe.”

“To the left, against the wall. About twenty-five steps.”

He’s like a five-year-old, kicking off the frigging blanket every time I cover him up.”

Reno’s eyebrow arched higher. “Yes, the Captain’s sleeping habits were certainly the question uppermost in my mind.”

“You see … I found the Captain … near a frozen lake … he almost fell in … and I stopped him and kissed him … well maybe that isn’t important right now …” Tilly stammered as her explanation came out in a stream of consciousness.

“OK, let’s skip ahead,” Reno urged as she thought, I will not laugh, I. Will. Not. Laugh. Oh Una if I you could see this …

Tilly awkwardly moved her hands back and forth and then gave up, conceding there was no way to salvage either her or the Captain’s modesty. “I was trying to lower his temperature.”

“Hmmm. Typically a scantily clothed woman or man accomplishes the opposite.”

“I meant his fever!” Tilly frowned as she emphasized the last word.

Reno pointed. “By stuffing something in his pants?” She chuckled and shook her head. Time to stop teasing the poor girl. “Detmer and Bonnie are about 5 minutes behind me, let’s get the Captain untied and … well … zipped before they …”
