Polyshipweek23 Day 4: Social Media

This is still a story about the gay road trip that the VKs are going on, and the pictures they're posting along the way. 

It's also a fic about the AKs doing some absolutely wild speculation about what could actually be going on with their friends, under the guise of caring about them so so much. 

It's a fic told in instagram screenshots, in royal media posts, and in the texts sent between different kids that keep going to all the right people despite what anyone else might think. 

It involves a lot of image editing that I am not prepared to do, as well as some fake text screenshots that I am only marginally more prepared to create. 

The fic starts out with a picture posted to Evie's instagram (see D1 credits for instagram and royal media handles and details there, or possibly the wicked world shorts). She got a camper for the summer! DIY time?? 

There are comments, and most of them are "OMG too cute" "love this for you" and "you're gonna make this the cutest summer road trip ever!" 

Some of them are a bit "WTF how are you affording this" 

Evie is #notbothered, and posts as much with her squad around her, updating the interior and exterior of the camper and looking hot and un-bothered in sunglasses and with absolutely important drinks in hand. 

Jay posts pictures of himself shirtless on top of the van. His account is dedicated exclusively to thirst traps and close up pictures of cool bugs he finds while wandering around outside of school grounds. 

Mal posts pictures of Evie looking sweaty and adorable while packing for the summer 

Early on, Evie posts a picture of the open road in front of them, and of herself in the passenger seat with the Auradon equivalent of starbucks in her hand. She almost always posts multiple photos at a time, and this one is a little swipe-through of herself with the drink, Jay driving and looking at the road, the road in front of them, and then a selfie where they're all crammed together with Mal and Carlos in the space between the front seats.

Jay posts a ladybug crawling over the steering wheel of the camper, except he doesn't actually show enough of the wheel to know that's where it is

Mal posts a picture of Evie directing them all into place against the camper with their fancy drinks in hand. They're trying to be budget-conscious for the journey, but when they didn't tell their AK friends exactly what they were doing for the summer, some of them assumed the worst and gave them many, many gift cards to use on their journey. 

They also have a mysterious benefactor (or BENefactor if you will) who has his father's credit card and no set limits on it, and keeps sending them gas money every time he sees pictures of them in the camper. 

He sends it via Auradon venmo, with emojis of a camper and a car and a little "love you, hope you're having fun" note. 

Mal has mixed feelings about this, but she's not turning down the free funds. There's.....maybe a few phone calls in her history, early in the mornings and late at night, where she's been talking to him about exactly what they're doing and why they have to do in on their own instead of accepting help from the Auradon royal family to get out of the country for the summer and to a country without magic laws, even just for the two weeks they're actually going to be in Arendelle. 

Evie posts the cutest pictures you've ever seen of the four of them at a fair, including all of them squashed together for a selfie while in line, and herself holding a giant crocodile plushie Mal won for her, and of course a sunset kissing shot with her gf. 

Mal posts a picture of Jay with his head in a trash can next to the roller coaster exit sign. 

Jay posts a picture of a cool bug that landed on Evie's cotton candy. 

At one point, they decide to leave the camper for a night and sleep out under the stars. This would have been a great idea, except the beautifully picturesque field that Mal picked out at random from the road map they've been using to find their way to interesting things turned out to be a cow pasture, and they wake up surrounded by cows.

Carlos posts a picture of a cow, two inches away from the phone screen with just enough sky in the background for it to be clear that he is definitely laying on the ground to take the picture. 

It's his most popular picture by a measure of 50 plus likes.

Early on they have a beach day, which is fun!! 

Mal posts a picture of Carlos buried up to his neck in sand, and a picture of Jay with wet hair fully over his face, looking like a weird drowned rat boy. Her picture of Evie is a candid, one of Evie laughing at the boys throwing each other off a rock formation. The selfie is herself, looking thoroughly pleased as Evie applies sunscreen in the background. 

Evie's beach day photo is herself standing on a rock, and the caption is something like "would you let me be your siren?" 

She looks incredible, and the Auradon boys who follow her because she's hot have a field day with it. 

Jay posts a picture of a hermit crab. It's surprisingly better than most of his other photos, until you scroll down to the caption, where it's revealed that this was actually Carlos taking the photo for him after Jay stepped on a jellyfish and refused to go back in the water for the rest of the afternoon.

At one point Evie and Jay decide that they should probably do something educational on their way, so as to not forget everything they've learned over the past year. Carlos is more than happy to help look up science museums, and they end up at the Camelot Museum of Industry. 

Mal did in fact text Ben about their trip, in the hopes that he would be proud of them for doing something educational, and Ben responds by sending them an article about the alleged ghosts that live in the tunnels under the building.

Evie posts a photo of herself standing dramatically on the front turret of the castle, where they let visitors up to use the telescopes in the evening. (On the second slide there's a photo of her grinning like a dork next to the giant telescopes, and then some very focused photos of her talking to the staff about how to adjust them to bring the planets into focus)

Mal posts a picture of herself and Carlos in an area labeled STAFF ONLY: DO NOT ENTER TUNNELS WITHOUT ID and a string of emojis that can reasonably be translated as "I'm going on a ghost hunt, fuckers"

Jay posts a picture of a snake he found outside under the bushes. 

The four of them do a video call with Lonnie, which is mostly so they can ask her to please, please come down and visit them, and also she should bring her swords, because they mayyyyyybe got into some trouble at one of the historic shrine sites and there's maybe some dryads trying to kill them

Lonnie sends over a pdf about curse breaking (sourced from her brother, who has some magic friends) 

Evie does not post pictures of that one, and instead makes a fb post with emo lyrics about how sometimes it's not about the photos, it's just about the memories. 

Mal posts a picture of herself with part of a tree branch embedded in her head. 

Jay posts a blurry picture of himself shirtless, holding a torch in one hand and a sword in the other. The caption is "winners never die". 

It gets the most comments out of anything they've posted so far. 

none of them have posted pictures of their destination, which is....somewhat concerning

Lonnie is the boldest of their AK friends, but they told her where they were going before they left, so she's not going to be any help. 

There is much speculation in the AK group chat about this. 

Jane sees a picture that Evie posts of the four of them in one of the magical heritage forests, and asks if they want to meet up for a picnic and also so she can show them all the sights of the forest firsthand. 

They do meet up, and Evie posts adorable pictures of them hanging out that only confuse her audience more

Jay posts pictures of the cool rocks he found in the historic forest 

Mal posts a picture of Evie's hands, close up and slightly blurry with some sort of paint all over them (it's probably not blood) 

Ben texts her to ask if it's blood 

There’s an 80% probability that it's not blood

Towards the end of the journey, Evie posts a lot of cute village/tourist photos of the four of them (and especially Mal) visiting the northern kingdoms. Corona was especially fun, and she dedicated a whole photo slide series to the floating lights festival. 

Jay, predictably, also posted about the lights festival. He posted pictures of a frog they found in the water, and the only reason you can tell it's the lights festival at all is the reflection of the floating lanterns against the pond in the background. 

Carlos posts a picture from the festival as well, which is a surprise! It's a picture of seven hands holding a lantern. 

Jane probably likes the photo, and then cries about it because she wants to be cool and dangerous and go on an unsupervised road trip. 

Evie makes a very cute post about sleeping together on a cold night in the mountains, complete with a lil selfie of herself kissing Mal's sleeping forehead in bed, and a picture of the sleepy blanket pile they made in the master bed of the camper together. 

Jay posts a cool spiderweb that he saw in the frost on the van window. 

Carlos sends a text complaining about freezing to death to Ben, who doesn't know where they are, but sends a box of hand warmers and more hot chocolate mix anyway.

Mal posts about being hurt by the ones you love the most (it was hot chocolate and she burnt her mouth and was very upset)

Answered Asks Below!

*All right, so I got through some easy SSLL asks and general asks, so if you got a tag notification, it probably means you sent me an ask months ago, and I’m just now getting to it.  Sorry about that!

I’m gonna put all of them under a cut, with also just some thoughts on the past few months, too!

I wasn’t very active on here last year, and man, that sucks!�� I really do wanna get back to it.  I felt like my words had been taken from me.  I’d get un-depressed long enough to write, and then something would happen to send me write back down the hole, all of my motivation gone.  

I came back last time, and a few days later, I wrecked a scooter and ended up bleeding all over the streets of Atlanta.  I’m not trying to be gross, but man, there was a lot of blood.  My glasses broke and cut my eyebrow and forehead, so that just poured.  If you guys ever wanna hear the full story just ask, but long story short, I ended up as a trauma in the hospital, got about 8 stitches for my trouble, and broke five ribs, my cheekbone, and my brow.  So that derailed things a bit, then some friends came and stayed with me for nearly a month, and then the holidays hit.  So there’s all the time from when you guys last saw me accounted for, ha.  

I’m still not doing fantastic mentally, but the other day, I was drunkenly telling one of my friends that I just wanted to write, that I wanted the words again, and that I was happiest when I was actively answering asks and talking to everyone on here.

And he said, “Get paper and a pencil or your tablet or you laptop -- whatever you kids use to write.”

“I can’t,” I argued, and he cut me off.

“I’ll help you.  Trust me and get it.”

And he ended up telling me what to write for some stupid UT crackfic that got me laughing and talking about the characters again, and the next morning... I just started writing until I found the words again. 

And now I hope I can keep sharing them with you.  <3

He’s a combination of both, I’d say.  The cool, lazy perception of Stretch, with the gruff flirtation of Red.  Wrap all that in a buried past, sprinkle in some extreme devotion to his brother, and mix in a healthy amount of low self-esteem and self-loathing that he tries to hide, and wham!  Rus!

@jukovon​  Hi there!  Sorry for the super belated reply!  8D  I’m so happy that you enjoyed the fic!  As for the Edge screen time... Hopefully, the latest update will help with that!  ;D  I don’t have a Twitter, actually.  I’m not entirely sure how it works.  I recently got into Instagram, and that’s been a weird learning curve, too.

Also, I just looked through your blog, and holy hell, your art is killer! <3

I know exactly what you’re talking about because I used to pretend those were real cigarettes when I was a kid.  I don’t think they’d be sweet enough for him!  Like, his version of the Grillby burger craving is a spider donut from Muffet’s, and he loves honey, so I think he’s got quite the sweet tooth.  I also see him as wanting to roll the sucker stem in his teeth or gnaw on it, and I see those candies as breaking down/ disintegrating too quickly for that.

As much as I’d love to include them, I think my head might explode if I give anymore cameos lol.  But thanks for your interest!

It’s the little details that matter. ;D  Right now, Q’s the only one that gets capitalization.  

Thank you so much!  In the case of HT, I’ve always thought that there was a deeper story -- and the comics have recently been shedding some much needed light on that backstory, too!  I’m a sucker for character development and figuring out what caused them to be that way, you know?

Also, I don’t know why, but I’m really against Crooks with braces.  I dunno, I just think it’d be harder to fix than that because of monster teeth.

If we’re talking general Sans and Paps, yes, but SSLL Sans and Paps... they used to be, and Papyrus still keeps up with them through text/social media/functions he attends as the monster mascot, but Sans has really pulled away from his friends after the incident with the machine.  Mostly because he doesn’t want them to find out -- and also wants to keep Frisk far away from Axe.

This fall I’m joining Table for Two USA (TFT)’s “Change the World with Onigiri #OnigiriAction” campaign from October 7th to November 20th. This campaign aims to provide 1 million school meals to children in need around the world.

During the campaign, every rice-ball-related post on the campaign website or social media with #OnigiriAction will provide five school meals to children in need! And I want to encourage YOU to participate in this campaign with me!

The campaign commemorates World Food Day, established in honor of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization by the UN in 1945. As an NPO with roots in Japan, the Table for Two USA campaign highlights onigiri (rice balls) made from rice, one of Japan’s major agricultural products. In Japan, rice balls are simple comfort food made with love for someone special.

One Onigiri photo post brings 5 school meals!

Last year, I posted a few pictures of my lunch, that include Onigiri, on my Instagram account with #OnigiriAction.

Each picture of Onigiri brings 5 school meals to children in need. Yes, it’s that simple; sponsor organizations will donate 5 school meals per photo submitted! In Africa, 25 cent donation can provide one school meal to a child. In the U.S., the same donation enables schools to provide school meals upgraded with fresh vegetables and fruits in low-income neighborhood school districts.

Here’s How to Participate:

Step 1. Snap a picture of your Onigiri

Take pictures of your Onigiri preparation and enjoyment.  You can take a picture of your Onigiri preparation to show off your cooking talent, OR snap a photo you eating Onigiri with your friends. You get to contribute to a good cause and let your creativity shines at the same time!

Step 2. Post your photos on the Website or on Your SNS

You can submit your photos via

A) Upload your photo on the campaign page

B) Post your photo from your social media (Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter) with hashtag #OnigiriAction (and #justonecookbook so I can check your creation too!)

Some Fake News About Me from Bloomberg

Last autumn, before the election, a writer for Bloomberg asked to spend a day with me to interview me for a feature piece about my blogging on Trump, and my life in general. I could tell from the initial conversation that it was going to be a hostile article. The reporter was open about being deeply frightened of Trump, believing him to be a racist, sexist, homophobic monster. So you can imagine how she felt about me for writing flattering blog posts about his persuasion talents.

I quickly determined that agreeing to the interview would be foolhardy. Obviously it was going to be a hit piece. The writer weakly tried to conceal that fact, but failed miserably. 

If I agreed to the interview, I knew I would be making myself the target of ridicule and shame, baring my flaws to the world -- both the real ones and the fake news ones. No rational person would agree to such an interview. It was a suicide mission.

So I agreed to the interview. 

Regular readers know I don’t experience embarrassment like normal people. I just thought it would be funny to have them write about how wrong I was. . . just as the election was about to prove how right I was.

The day I agreed to the interview, I told my girlfriend Kristina that I was going to be the subject of a “hit piece” in Bloomberg. When the writer asked to speak to my brother, for background, I told him it was a hit piece, but I invited him to do it anyway, just for fun. Obviously, no sane person would agree to be interviewed for hit piece on his own family.

So my brother agreed to the interview. 

We’ll have a good laugh about it later today. He got framed as a gullible idiot for “believing” something my mom told us when we were kids.

Check the article here and see if you can spot the fake news and the places where context has been tweaked to make things look both true and misleading at the same time. I’ll tell you what you missed, if anything, after you read it. Compare your impressions to my Fake News Report Card below.

Here’s the Bloomberg article by Caroline Winter

Fake News Report Card

1. The article and headline used my old phrasing “master wizard” instead of the updated “Master Persuader” that I used in 95% of my work. That was an intentional choice by the editor to create the KKK association in your mind, or at least to make it all seem silly.

2. The anecdote about me showing her a Victoria’s Secret Whencast that I made didn’t happen. One of the hundreds of public Whencasts on the site included that content, created by a woman. I might have opened that one along with others as different examples of what the software can do. By highlighting that one bit of fake news (saying I created it), and putting it in the context of my girlfriend being too young for me, it created a powerful and intentional creepy vibe.

3. Kristina doesn’t live with me. She was staying at my house temporarily while her place was having some repairs and upgrades. 

4. When an article is intended to be favorable, you see photos that make me look relatively good, like this one, from Peter Duke:

This is standard practice on both sides of the political spectrum. Publications pick the photos that tell their bias, not the story.

5. The headline suggests I am somehow, maybe, in favor of genocide. Obviously I’m not in favor of genocide, and the article later weakly explains that. But by then, the damage is done. Your brain is most influenced by what you read first, especially if it is in a headline.

6. The headline says Trump hypnotized me. I would accept that as a hypothesis, but the article doesn’t address the point at all. The implication is that I’m a gullible nut-job, as opposed to one of the few people who predicted Trump’s win and provided lots of cognitive-science-backed reasons for the prediction.

7. The article was initiated before the election, and was originally intended for publication about then. But a funny thing happened that ruined everything for Bloomberg. Trump won, and in so doing, he made me look like less of a nut. My accurate predictions, against all odds, would have been the headline in any article that wasn’t designed to be hostile.

8. To explain my Linguistic Kill Shot idea, the writer focused on the Carly Fiorina “look at that face” incident. She could have mentioned Lyin’ Ted, or Low Energy Bush, or Crooked Hillary. All stronger examples, but they don’t make me look like a sexist when the context is omitted. The Fiorina examples does.

9. The writer refers to my wide field of interests as “unusual fixations,” thus turning ordinary discussions of fitness and diet habits into something that sounds like a fetish.

10. Last year, the author of a book about seduction called The Game mailed me a copy of his book. This is common practice among authors. Sometimes it happens because an author thinks another author would be interested in the book. Sometimes an author hopes to get a public mention to boost sales. I have lots of unread books all over the house for this same reason. The Bloomberg writer focused on this one. The Pre-suasion book she mentions was also signed and sent to me by the author, for the same reason. But I read that one. (It’s great.)

You might recognize this book-related persuasion trick as the Mein Kampf play. If someone gives you a book that you didn’t ask for, somehow the book still explains your soul.

11. The writer asked me what would happen for me personally if Trump won. I talked about the good and the bad of it. She picked only the following words to make me look like a douche bag: “If Trump gets elected, my profile will go through the roof, because I’m in a very small group of people who publicly said he would win in a landslide. ... I’ll be very popular,” he said, with satisfaction.”

Notice the three dots before “I’ll be very popular.” That is your signal for a manufactured quote. They assembled it from bits of what I said and left out the context that would have rendered it un-douche-baggy.

12. This quote is out of context: “In the kitchen, Adams installed three microwaves so he “can make a lot of popcorn at once.” The missing context is that I designed the house knowing that whoever makes the popcorn for the rest of the family misses the first part of the movie. Plus, the extra microwaves come in handy all the time. I use them at the same time quite often. How did that come out sounding nutty?

13. My girlfriend, Kristina, has an advanced degree from UC Berkeley, plays multiple instruments, has succeeded in several fields, and now has 3.3 million Instagram followers. The writer mentioned her bra size.

14. This quote was cobbled together to make me look like a racist and a sexist because I write about Trump. “Adams has said, his professional advancement was thwarted by diversity hires. ‘There was no hope for another generic white male to get promoted any time soon,’ he wrote in Dilbert 2.0: 20 Years of Dilbert. (Later in the book, he noted that his Dilbert TV show was canceled after ‘the network made a strategic decision to focus on shows with African-American actors.’) 

Both events are true, but in the first case she left out the fact that my bosses told me in direct language that they couldn’t promote a white male. I didn’t imagine it. Likewise, the UPN network literally made the decision to focus on African-American viewers at that time. it wasn’t just my interpretation of events.

Here’s the problem with that sort of reporting out of context: I’m also the guy who thinks men should stay out of the abortion question and leave it to women to decide what should be legal. I also blogged about my ideas for slavery reparations. I also described myself to her as “ultra-liberal” on social issues, because I am. If you leave out that context, the anecdotes sound like an explanation for why I grew up to be so terrible.

15. The article quotes my friend and cartooning colleague Stephan Pastis as being appalled at my Trump support, and speculating that the reason might simply be that cartoonist crave attention.

Of course I crave attention. Plus, it’s my job. That part is not in dispute.

But I think Stephan’s quotes were from before Election Day, when people still thought I was nuts to predict a Trump win. Today, I think Stephan would add a second hypothesis: I did it because I thought I was right, and it seemed important to me to share with the world what I could see coming from a mile away.

Plus I crave attention. It was a twofer.

16. The writer badgered me on several occasions to make a comparison between Dogbert and Trump. I said Dogbert’s personality is based on my own dark inner thoughts and had nothing to do with Trump except they are both ambitious in the extreme. So she wrote this: “I’d thought the point of those strips was to laugh at Dogbert’s cruelty—not celebrate it. But Adams seemed elated by the triumph of a Dogbertesque president.” WTF?

That’s sixteen intentionally-biased or incorrect components in one story.

By the way, Bloomberg did have a third-party do fact-checking on the article by running a bunch of questions by me for verification. That is standard practice for the big publications. None of the things I mentioned here were in the fact checking. The fact-checkers don’t check the writer’s own eye-witness accounts for accuracy, and they don’t check for missing context.

When normal citizens read the news, they think it is mostly accurate. But when you are the subject of reporting, you can see the fake news all over it. I thought I would share this view with you so you can increase your skepticism when you see this sort of thing presented as truth.

Plus, I crave attention. I couldn’t solve healthcare funding without it, among other things. Attention is fun, but also a tool.

You might still wonder why I volunteered to be interviewed for a hit piece, aside from the attention thing. My brother just sent me a very short video clip of his first reaction when he opened the article to read it. I think this answers all of your questions.

You won't believe how these plus-size leggings are being sold on Amazon

We’ve all heard of companies hiring thin models to advertise plus-size clothing but one company took this concept to the next level — and the images have sparked outrage.

Amazon retailer Arrive Guide sells activewear in both straight and plus-sizes. That’s great news for the average woman who wears a size 16 — a range the fashion industry deems plus-size — but the model used by the company is not exactly reflective of the plus-sized shopper.

Not only is the model slender, she’s showcasing how large the leggings run by pulling the fabric away from her body in one image and in another, standing with two legs inside one pant leg.

Facebook user Betsy Abel, a woman in Minnesota, recently posted a photo of Arrival Guide’s Yukata Women’s Active Workout Capri Leggings, captioning it, “Here’s one for today’s ‘Are You Freaking Kidding Me’ file. Scrolling through Amazon looking at leggings… Get to the bottom and see this pair of plus size leggings… That’s fine, no shame if you need a larger size. So what the hell are they thinking using a slim model with two legs in one side??? Talk about disrespectful and being in poor taste. Like oh, hey, in case you don’t feel bad about needing a larger pair…let’s make asses of ourselves and show how two trimmer women could fit in these. Un-freaking-real!”

The post generated comments from people who deemed the image “sad” and “disrespectful.”

Abel, a fitness trainer at Sassy Guns Fitness in Minneapolis, tells Yahoo Style: “I work with women every day who fight stereotypes that go along with being plus-size and unfortunately, they are bombarded with images that make them compare themselves to cultural norms.”

Yahoo Style could not find a contact at Arrive Guide for comment (the company appears to have no website) and was told by Amazon that it didn’t have the manufacturer’s contact information.

However, according to Marie Denee, creator of The Curvy Fashionista Style Expo, an annual plus-size shopping event, the photos represent a missed opportunity. “It’s clear there was very little thought put into marketing these leggings,” Denee tells Yahoo Style. “The company could have hired a plus model — there are plenty out there — used a plus-sized mannequin, or simply featured the product alone.”

The message is also muddled — the photos evoke images of magazine covers featuring women triumphantly standing inside one trouser leg of an older pair of trousers, to show off their weight-loss transformation. Is the idea that these leggings will motivate plus-size customers to lose weight? Or to shame them for requiring pants in a larger size?

Practically speaking, the photos don’t provide a clear image of what the leggings will look like on plus-size women. “What size are these pants? For what body type?” asks Denee.

While it’s important to spotlight the cultural bias for conventional beauty standards, Denee adds that the concept of accountability is often lost. “Does the onus fall on Arrive Guide or Amazon for allowing these images?” she says. “There’s a cultural sensitivity that’s lacking here and a great need for social responsibility.”

man, I can already see the fourth of july instead of may seventeenth plot...oh god! Skam Austin gets worse everytime I think about it too hard!

I think it’ll be prom or homecoming or something that’s a thing?

I had my problems with skamit but kept watching until ep 4. When italian vilde was going upstairs to hook up with you know who she actually stopped and asked italian chris if she was doing the right thing bc she was not sure and she was like wtf are you kidding me, just go with him. I just, idk, no best friend would tell you to follow some guy just like that. It might sounds stupid but that scene really made me feel so damn bad. I am afraid this remake might be a bit too much for me.

Mmm, yeah, I didn’t keep up with that one past the first ep so I don’t know. I’m glad the Italians seem to enjoy it but I could understand why they’re like “oh god, how to we explain this to non-Italians” at least once an episode. 

I think the positive thing about it being on Facebook watch is that it is the only free streaming platform it could have been on, meaning it has the potential to reach more people. I mean okay you need a fb account but that’s better than paying for Netflix or Hulu every month. Plus as of now it isn’t geoblocked. And Facebook owns Instagram so the social media can be filtered better than it would have on any other network. I just see how in terms of what US networks have to offer why FB was best

Yeah, I think it’s a fitting choice? I’m not sure how much being on a certain platform gives you a greater reach, I think some people were thinking more people might stumble onto it elsewhere.

I’m from jersey too! Man north and south jersey are like two different states. Imagine Skam Jersey City or something - never on time to anything because NJ transit sucks, the multiple malls within in a 20 minute radius is the hangout on weekdays and you go into the city or Hoboken on weekends for no reason with no money to spend. Your neighbors pretty much make your block more diverse than the UN. Real non chain pizza and Chinese take out are eaten religiously.

Jersey has a little bit of everything?? Because I was from a small-town, little suburb that was all tree-lined and beautiful. But that town was also surrounded by highways and stripmalls if you went ten-fifteen minutes in several directions?

i used to be meh about the remakes but the longer they go on the more i hate them. the european ones feel like a bunch of bad cosplayers decided to remake skam. I HATE THEM

I have this thing where it’s kind of fun to compare them at first but then the novelty wears off and I’m more “why... no...”. I generally hate remakes though so I’ve actually felt like I’ve grown as a person to be this accepting!

Lol Isak and Even were barely in s4 and when they were the storyline was either dropped halfway trough or Isak was used to further Sana's story, develop their best friends story they build in s3 or to use Isak as preacher to justify muddy waters. Just like Sana and Noora's ONLY SOLO scene did, to "call out Noora's hypocricity" but it was more to excuse and get a wise, popular character to make William look better (lol). Yet Vilde and Chris were close and had build up with Sana, not Noora...

My two least favorite scenes in Skam...

If the Uk is the biggest it's not what Scandinavia is getting. 90% is American based, it's always been like that and that's why we have so much American integrated in out cultures and also why we are also very good at English because while we study it early on we are constantly surrounded by English and American film and television.

Maybe part of that stat is the UK/USA co-productions? Like a British production company doing Skam Austin like this. 

US Willhelm looks like the most genetic white football player douschebag and he looks exactly like that scumbag from 13 reasons why. I wonder why the remakes never changes the ethnicity for Willhelm when he's supposed to be the dream goal?

Yeahhhhhhhh, it does say something that they’ve changed P Chris to a minority twice while the most popular guy is always remarkably the same.

I mean I get that Julie is doing skam Austin so it’s being critiqued more BUT there are so many other remakes going on to watch instead. So many countries have the opportunity to make skam and I’m sorry but so far they all either did an exact copy and/or are not keeping up with the point of daily updates in real time.People hate on Julie but the other creators so far have done little to adapt it correctly. Clearly from Skam Austin we see that the characters do not have to be exact copies 🤷🏻‍♀️

Well, I don’t think people were very accepting of the other remakes either? People have been pretty harsh on all of them. It’s just a different kind of harsh with Skam Austin because it’s tied up with people’s existing feelings about Julie Andem and s4 and the end of Skam and etc.

"The argument is racist" omg stop throwing that word around it actually has an important meaning and using it for something inappropriate is just defeating its purpose. Also idk if it's just because that anon is American, but not every argument needs to have an underlying note of racism in it and it's frustrating when people just use the "you're racist" card just to look better in a discussion, it just destroyes the job we put into fighting against racism when it actually matters.

Yeah, that happens a lot. There’s a thoughtful way to consider race in what we’re talking about but that’s not it.

I think skam austin is going to be another repeat of the same plot , like I think if they wanted to do something new, they would change the name at least but calling it skam austin immediately connects it to og skam and I think the other remakes have shown us just have different they can go with the plots...

I don’t know, I’ve really gone back-and-forth about how close it’s going to be? I think we have to wait and get some footage at least.

imagine how it was when she broke the news to the actors? the deal was done during s3, they must have at least thought of her going to the states, then finding out s4 is the last season.

I remember reading a while ago when a p Chris fan was going ***** over Jonas and that Eva didn't give Chris a chance because he's so much more than a fuckboy. They said they had seen vines of pchris and Eva and I though of course it would be vines rofl so imagine a bunch of people falling for this hot badboy over vines expecting this great badass character and then he's barely in the show? I think it's 90% Herman projection onto Chris and Eva. They love him because he's apparently hot.

Yeah, with P Chris I’m like “he’s barely there????”. At least William is a character!

it's weird that all the remakes chose to start in the middle of the school year. even weirder that skam france has chosen to put out 2 seasons in the space of about 4 months... I feel like they're doing that to dominate the skam remakes, you know to be the most predominant remake. Seems fishy to me. I don't trust them. Don't even get me started on these fake leaks of the episode for publicity!!!!! We're not falling for it! Who else could it be except THEIR OWN TEAM!!! yeesh lol sorry ANYWAY

Didn’t episodes leak twice or something? I don’t know, I’m not following it very closely. I did find the whole “just wait, things will change more after episode three!” thing annoying though.

"Is it true that skam Italian uses a white actress to play a muslim character? If so it is so wrong!!" Anon,let me just remind you that what is wrong about it is the fact that she's a non muslim girl but she wears a hijaab and plays a muslim (if we get s4..I can't imagine all the scenes with "Sana" praying, knowing she's not muslim). Please, remember that there are white muslim people and it'd be more okay for a white girl to play this character IF the actress was muslim herself I guess.

Yeah, I think you have to be careful not to conflate that, but also it is a shame that they’d change a POC character into a white character? Just because someone can be white and a Muslim doesn’t mean that’s actually a good representation of the Muslim minority there?

How Vogue Paris Defines the American ‘It’ Girl

Sure, we love that French girl style — even if some say it’s fake news. The stripes, the bags, the boots: C’est très chic. (And très unfussy, despite any hardwired preconceived notions to the contrary.)

But the cross-cultural love now goes both ways, thanks to American “it” girls like Gigi and Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, and Emily Ratajkowski, whose bold style and fashion industry ubiquity have made quite the impact across the pond — for eight very specific reasons.

According to Vogue Paris, these fashionable Americans share quite a few noteworthy things, including a personal street style speckled with ’90s throwbacks, a healthy embrace of pop culture, and oh yes, a little thing called athleisure. Let’s break it down. 

1. “An Instagram account on helium.” (“Un compte Instagram gonflé à l’hélium.”) When it comes to the American je ne sais quoi, it’s all about that Instagram, y’all. Calling today’s top American models “une force de frappe digitale,” or “digital striking force,” the French fashion bible cites the top models’ millions of social media followers as a prerequisite for entering the couture cool kids club these days.

2. “A well-cut style.” (“Un style bien tranché.”) They know what they like. Our local “it” girls have cultivated a well-defined style of their own, according to the magazine, by mixing and matching sportswear with edgier street style to create a decidedly American approach to everyday dressing. And they manage to find a new way to throw it back to the ’90s, Cher Horowitz-style: Vogue Paris calls out that perennial favorite film of the decade, Clueless, as an important arbiter of American style. We’d say “as if,” but it’s totally true. 

3. “An intense sports routine.” (“Une routine sportive intense.”) Enter athleisure. For the French, there’s nothing more American than the idea of the sporty California girl, paddle-boarding in Malibu or hiking the hills of Los Angeles. And only an American “it” girl could make gym wear must-wear. Until brands like Vetements and the very concept of a four-figure-priced sweatshirt entered the mix, of course.

4. “A sensitivity to pop culture.” (“Une sensibilité à la Pop Culture.”) American “it” girls know pop culture because they are pop culture. According to Vogue Paris, local “it” girls make it more than OK that they “aiment tout ce qui est mainstream,” or “like everything mainstream,” whether it’s basketball games, In-N-Out burgers, or extra-large pizza pies.

5. “A political and feminist commitment.” (“Un engagement politique et féministe.”) For American “it” girls, it’s cool to care. Whether it’s Kendall Jenner supporting Hillary Clinton or the Hadid sisters hitting the streets to protest, the magazine notes that contemporary American models  “n’ont pas peur d’engager le débat,” or “aren’t afraid to engage in debate,” as a major reason for their international impact.

6. “They’ve bathed in Hollywood entertainment forever.” (“Elles baignent dans l’Entertainment hollywoodien depuis toujours.”) Oh, and they grew up this way. Whether it’s reality-stars-turned-models like the aforementioned Kendall Jenner or children-of-actors-turned-catwalk-queens like Hailey Baldwin, Vogue Paris calls a childhood in or peripheral to the spotlight “le parfait training” (the perfect training) for eventual ascension to “it” girl status.

7. “Music is central.” (“La musique occupe une place centrale“) As the French see it, music is a central tenet of American “it” girl style, from annual, fashion-forward music festivals like Coachella to the copious amount of model-musician romantic pairings. (Looking at you, Gigi and Zayn.)

8. “They are everywhere.” (“Elles sont partout.“) Finally, when in doubt, just look around: American “it” girls are “partout,” or “all over.” They don’t just walk the runway; they collaborate with designers on the very clothing unveiled there. (Ahem, Tommy x Gigi, Chrome Hearts x Bella.) They don’t just pose for magazine spreads; they step behind the camera and photograph their peers for the very fashion magazines they themselves have appeared in. (Yep, we’re talking about Kendall’s cover shoot for Love magazine.)

Because when it comes to the American “it” girl, “La boucle est bouclée” — the circle is complete. And that? C’est bon.
