Haji 1445H - d's story part 3
Asrama haji.
Alhamdulillah
'til next time

Umroh
Anyway...
Today is the first day I go back to work!
Makanya ku kalau kerja selalu pakai headset anyway.
Ok, back to the topic, mau ngerekap apa aja yang sudah dilakukan selama 2 minggu terakhir:
Jadinya tanggal 26 ini kayanya Cuma packing, terus baca buku lagi mau ngabisin buku, dan kemudian sorenya nonton The Boy and The Heron di Jericho dekat rumah. Tapi worth watching! I recommend.
Nah di sinilah adventure dimulai. Duh tapi ceritanya panjang banget lagi, intinya kusingkat aja yah.
Di satu sisi, sangat satisfying, karena ku sangat suka being on my own with my own thought, tapi di sisi lain juga kesepian sih mayan. Tapi ku kebantu banget karena ku emang udah beli notebook gitu buat nulis thoughts and doodling kalau bosen. Habis ngapain, dan what I was feeling at that moment, ada pelajaran apa yang bisa diambil buat kehidupan atau buat logsitik next trip, gitu-gitu doang.
• Itinerary: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1DCmk929_ByRKUJKQlJzcXIIHnM0XRBwwKYeTjdGenng/edit?usp=sharing
• Belajar umroh sendiri: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wwMwnOPMvO_z0-5HWxk1-C4ySARj6_XDi_Yx5oSdBI8/edit?usp=sharing
Buat budgeting, ku belum bisa share public dulu in details tapi total abis di range 1400GBP-an lah. Tapi feel free to reach out to me personally!, ku bisa kirimin excel sheetnya.
Hmm iya, kalau mau di-detailin cerita umrah ini bakal panjang banget, sampai hiccups-hiccupsnya tapi yaudah next time aja ye.
Terus yaudah sampai rumah nonton beberapa variety show korea. KU NONTON HONGKIM DONGJON SEMALAM NANGIS BOMBAY???
Tapi ADA STRAY KIDS!!! Dan mereka tentu saja as usual super perform dan sangat bagus.
Ku Jumat dan Sabtu tu berturut-turut puasa juga ganti Ramadan, yang ternyata pas kuhitung lagi, tahun lalu ku Cuma bolong 3 hari?? Jadi sisa hutangku tinggal 1. Besok deh Selasa/Rabu dikerjain.
Tadi pagi juga ketemu sama postdoc nanyain progress terus ku bilang “I’m on it!” dan udah.
Oxford seperti biasa masih sepi aja kaya gini, tapi ku sangat semangat kembali bekerja setelah break kemarin. Semoga tahun ini goes well! OH IYA, mau bikin post refleksi 2023 padahal awalnya, kenapa malah jadi ngomongin gua pergi umrah dah…
Ciao!

Hajj 2023: Setting the routine
Day 1 in Mecca was about completing the Umrah which we finished and post that, it was important to set a routine for ourselves. When to wake up, when to have breakfast, when to leave for the Kaaba.... everything had to be set as a routine for the next 35+ days.
Our food, accommodation and travel was all taken care of by the community (for which we had paid). All the timings were set for us but it had to be internalized.
The routine I had set for myself in Mecca was:
1) wake-up by 5AM
2) offer morning prayers
3) quick nap
4) go for breakfast
5) leave for Kaaba in the bus by 8:30AM
6) complete 3 to 4 Tawaafs by 11:30AM
7) come back to the hotel by 12:15PM
8) offer afternoon prayers
9) lunch and then chill till 7PM
10) offer evening prayers
11) dinnner
12) leave for Kaaba in the bus by 8:30PM
13) come back to the hotel by 12:30AM
14) sleep.....peace....love...
These routines helped me plan!

A Long Awaited Journey #1
—Foto bersama setelah manasik
My first direct long-haul-flight, dengan durasi penerbangan kurang lebih sembilan jam.
—Foto bersama sebelum berangkat

Embarking on the sacred journey of Umrah is a dream for many Muslims around the world. However, concerns about cost and logistics can often deter individuals from making this pilgrimage. Fortunately, there are a variety of options available that cater to different budgets and preferences, ensuring that the journey to Mecca is accessible to all. In this post, we’ll explore some of the best affordable umrah packages, focusing on those available by bus and air travel.
Affordable Umrah Packages
For those seeking a budget-friendly option, cheap Umrah packages are an excellent choice. These packages are designed to provide all the essentials without breaking the bank. Typically, they include accommodations, transportation, and guidance, allowing pilgrims to focus on their spiritual journey without worrying about the details.
When searching for a cheap Umrah package, it’s important to compare different offers. Look for packages that provide the best value, including the quality of accommodation and additional services such as meals and guided tours. Many travel agencies offer seasonal promotions, making it possible to secure even better deals.
Umrah Package by Bus
For those traveling within the region, an Umrah package by bus can be a practical and economical choice. These packages usually include transportation from major cities directly to the holy sites, making the journey more convenient.
Traveling by bus not only reduces costs but also allows pilgrims to enjoy the scenic views along the way. Many bus packages offer comfortable seating and onboard amenities, ensuring a pleasant travel experience. Plus, the communal aspect of traveling by bus can enhance the spiritual experience as you share the journey with fellow pilgrims.
Umrah Package by Air
If you're coming from further afield, an Umrah package by air may be the most suitable option. While this may be a higher investment than traveling by bus, many travel agencies offer competitive rates that can make flying affordable.
Air packages typically include round-trip flights, accommodations, and sometimes even airport transfers. This option is ideal for those looking for a hassle-free travel experience, as it eliminates the long hours spent on the road. Additionally, traveling by air can help pilgrims arrive in Mecca quickly, giving them more time to perform their rituals.
Conclusion
Whether you opt for a cheap umrah package, a bus journey, or a convenient air travel option, there are plenty of ways to make your pilgrimage accessible and enjoyable. With thorough research and planning, you can find a package that meets your needs and allows you to focus on the spiritual aspects of your journey.

*swafoto bareng Mbak I
(Mbak I aja sih. Saya olahraganya pemula wkwk).
(Apakah Mbak I cenayang? Mau jawab, 'Iya, Mbak. Aku suka lari dari kenyataan', kok, sepertinya sok asik wkwk). Saya jawab, "Gak juga kok, Mbak. Masih pemula banget, aku. Tampangku, kayak pelari, ta mbak?" Sambil menertawakan diri sendiri. "Aku lihat dari sepatumu," kata Mbak I sambil menunjuk sepatu yang saya pakai. Kami berdua tertawa. "Mbak pernah ikutan race, marathon?" "Aku sama temen-temen sih. "Weehh. Keren ihh. Aku mah larinya pace 10. Keitung lari, gak, Mbak? Itupun di kompleks perumahan tetangga." WKWKW. Memang begitu adanya. Pace siput terhitung jalan cepat ya?
Lalu Mbak I meyakinkan, "Oh yaa gapapa dong. Jalan dulu kan. Terus latihan pelan-pelan." Saya menimpali, "Lagian aku belum pernah ikut turnamen, atau fun run gitu-gitu. Waktunya gak pas." "Oalaah. Iya, makanya tadi lihat sepatumu, pasti suka olahraga, sih. Gak enak. Kalau sepatu lari, bisa dipake jalan atau lari," jelas Mbak I.
Isshh.
Tahu dia gara-gara komunitas dulu. Dia sering posting morning walk gitu. Terus yaa kok aku tergerak ikutan haha. Dulu banget pas kecil diajakin Ayah, sih." "Gapapa dong. Ini aku emak-emak suka olahraga ingin hidup sehat."
Jujur saja. Gak nyangka umur mbak I ada di kepala 4. Aku pikir masih 35an 😂🙏🏻. Seneng banget melihat perempuan berdaya.
"Masyaallah" "Keren, Mbak!" gitu-gitu wkwk. Memang iya! hehe. Secara harfiah umrahnya memang dengan Mas G. Tapi almost my 24/7 selama 12 hari itu, yaa sama Mbak I dan beberapa jamaah sekamar (yang masyaallah pada baik-baik banget, seru pokoknya! gak berasa sendirian). Jadi, yang keren (si)apanya, nih? wkwkw. Mas G lebih keren, sih. Saya kecipratan (duiikiit) kerennya (weh, tidak mau kalah soalnya jadi muthowifa amatiran) wkwk.
Ingat qi. Kita perlu memperjuangkan dengan ikhlas keridhoan diri kita sendiri. Ya Allah, semoga aku (& hatiku) ridho dengan ikhlas atas ketetapanMu.

Weekly Journal 2 : Travelling to Saudi Arabia
I am writing another journal about my life, wondering how much has changed since my last entry. This entry picks up where I left off, continuing my reflections on my adventures while traveling. This time, I will be going to a place where all Muslims strive to be, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, Saudi Arabia. This journey starts off with my uncle, a significant figure in our family, who successfully won a case that resulted in a substantial financial gain for him. My mom, who played a crucial role in helping him, convinced him to sponsor us to go there. My uncle agrees because he's trying to find a meaningful thank-you gift to show his appreciation for the help he received. After much thought, they have decided to stay for two weeks, one in Makkah and the other in Madinah. This made me glad because my friend had recently returned from Makkah and was describing his experience there. He added that while he was there, he felt at peace for the first occasion in his lifetime and could spend the rest of his life there. This made me wonder what caused him to feel that way.
As the time draws near, the awaited moment is here. Excitement fills the air, and anticipation builds as everyone is united in our preparations and looks forward to what lies ahead. My mother made a clumsy yet devastating mistake on our trip to the airport. She genuinely forgot to close the gate, which caused my father to panic. Fortunately, our gate had yet to be renovated to an automatic gate, which calmed my father, who was still a little furious with my mother's ineptitude. I'm also thankful our journey over the next few hours went smoothly. The flight will take approximately 8 hours, and I am perfectly prepared. I've pre-downloaded a handful of movies and comics I'll binge-watch. Some include Straight Out of Context, which tells a story about Ice Cube's origin and his group called N.W.A. For comics, I've downloaded Tower of God and God of High School, which has around 1000+ chapters.
After 8 hours, we were near the Saudi border. From there, we could see how their city is organized. It was phenomenal seeing the gorgeous night panorama from above. I was relieved when we landed since my back was beginning to hurt. As we exited the flight, the stewardess sent us off with a bright smile, hoping we would fulfill our Umrah peacefully. There, everything felt weird because almost everything was written in Arabic. But first, we went to grab some food because, as always, food on a flight tasted weird compared to that on the ground. We only bought some bread to ensure we weren't hungry since we arrived around 1 a.m. Once done, we took a bus that would take us to the hotel where we would be staying. During the ride, we were able to see the city. It was interesting to see that some buildings were shaped differently than others, making me think, are there any advantages to that shape? Or just for ecstatic? Once arrived at the hotel, my uncle assigned a room for us. Each room could fit 3 people. My cousin, brother, and I were assigned to one room while others were assigned somewhere else. Everyone slept early because it had been a very tiring day.
This section will be about my journey throughout Madinah. We started our day by going to the Nabawi Mosque to pray for Subuh. It was an intriguing experience because while they basically recited a normal surah, how they pronounced it made it captivating. Upon completion, we would shop, walk around, and enjoy the views and their culture. Walking around felt normal because their vibe was the same as if I were in Malaysia. The only difference is that they are very proactive in getting customers. Some even resorted to using physical strength to pull people around. This made me uncomfortable because while it wouldn't be much of a problem for men, it would be troublesome for women. Other than that, everything else was fine. The food is mouthwatering. I especially enjoyed the kebab because the meat was well-seasoned, and the sauce was well-made. The frozen dates were also delicious, giving a texture different from regular dates. I recommend that others try it once in their lifetime because the difference in the quality of the dates compared to the ones we ate in Malaysia is phenomenal. As I almost forgot, another reason why Madinah was important for us Muslims was because the grave of our prophet, Muhammad, is located inside the Nabawi Mosque. To go there, you would need patience because many people are willing to even injure others just to see the tomb. My experience in Madinah was good, as I even saw the tomb.
Makkah was busier than Madinah, not because it had more retail stores but because it housed the famed Kaaba, which all Muslims wanted to visit. There's nothing much to say other than that the Kaaba in real life is incomparably beautiful compared to the pictures on Google. I met many friendly people there who were also doing their Umrah for the first time. Besides the famed Kaaba and the experience of doing Umrah for the first time, everything else was just the same as in other countries I visited, and it was memorable. From the buildings to the people, everything looked the same as in Malaysia but were unique in their own way.
Looking back, I realize now how much that experience changed me. I've learned so much from how they lived, from how the Arabians sacrificed their dignity just to get enough money to survive in this harsh world to how people act nicely despite hardships. Now I understand when my friend stated that, for once, he felt peaceful in his life. This may be what he meant by it.

Can I do Umrah on my own?
Can I do Umrah on my own? Some travellers who want to arrange the pilgrimage to Mecca without any travel agency frequently ask this question. Yes, you can do Umrah on your own. However, careful planning is critical to fulfilling this task effectively.
Planning an Umrah trip typically entails purchasing a travel package from any travel company. However, the Saudi government has significantly changed its policies regarding the country's tourism sector in recent years. With these modifications, pilgrims can freely organize their holy journey to Mecca. Today, organizing a DIY Umrah journey is a trend worldwide. However, many first-time travellers still get Umrah Packages from Sheffield from any reputable travel agent because of some challenges.
The Rise of DIY Umrah
The Saudi government has modernized its tourism industry through several measures. One of the Saudi government's goals in modernizing tourism in Saudi Arabia is to provide travellers with the ability to plan their own Umrah. Let's examine the outstanding steps/initiatives below:
A more comprehensive range of flight options
The expansion of flight options has dramatically enhanced the popularity of DIY Umrah. Travellers have greater freedom to arrange their trips due to various airlines and destinations. While traditional airlines offer premium services to accommodate different preferences and budgets, budget airlines offer affordable rates.
Furthermore, more direct and connected flight schedules have made it simpler for individuals from many areas to start their spiritual pilgrimage. Individuals can now customize their Umrah experiences to suit their needs and interests, travelling at their own pace to experience all aspects of this holy journey thanks to the expansion of flight options.
Diverse accommodation choices
DIY Umrah provides a range of lodging choices to fit every preference and budget. There is something for everyone, from the elegance of five-star hotels with luxurious amenities to the ease and affordability of low-cost lodgings. Furnished villas and apartments provide the amenities and flexibility of a home for people looking for a more genuine experience.
Pilgrims on limited funds might also choose shared accommodations in guesthouses or hostels, which makes their stay more affordable. The final decision on lodging is based on group size, personal preferences, and needs.
Improved transportation infrastructure
Saudi Arabia's improved transit system is revolutionary for pilgrims doing the Umrah independently. Saudi Arabian airports, public transportation systems, and road networks can all be enhanced to significantly advance travel. This shortens the trip time and lessens the anxiety of exploring unfamiliar places. Improved connectivity allows pilgrims to quickly explore the various parts of Mecca and Medina while concentrating more on their spiritual journey.
In 2018, the Saudi government launched the Haramain High-Speed Railway to connect Mecca and Medina efficiently. This fastest train has reduced the time it takes to travel from Mecca to Medina. Taking a bus or a car usually takes 6 to 8 hours. But you may travel from Mecca to Medina in about two hours by taking the Haramain train.
Introducing online visa application
Saudi Arabia simplified the visa application procedure in 2019 by introducing electronic visas. Through this program, visitors can apply for a Saudi Arabian visa without the assistance of a travel agency. This is beneficial for those who question, "How to perform Umrah without travel agent?"
Furthermore, the Saudi government implemented an electronic visa waiver (EVW) for citizens of the United Kingdom last year. Travellers from the UK can enter Saudi Arabia for various purposes using the EVW, such as study, business, tourism, and Umrah. If travellers prefer not to consult a travel agency, they can apply for this visa by simply going to visitsaudi.com.
Digital platforms
Thanks to digital platforms that have completely changed the Umrah experience, travellers who wish to organize their own pilgrimage to Mecca without the assistance of a travel agency now have DIY options available. These platforms offer a complete set of tools for scheduling flights, lodging, and other forms of transportation whenever it's most convenient for them. Travellers frequently include secure payment methods, real-time availability, and pricing comparison to make planning more accessible and practical. Furthermore, several platforms offer helpful tools like information guides, interactive maps, and prayer times. These applications enable pilgrims to embark on their spiritual journey with assurance and effectiveness.

Reusable Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is vital, particularly during Ramadan when fasting is observed. A reusable water bottle will help you manage your hydration needs.
Light Snacks: Pack some light, non-perishable snacks like dates and nuts for Suhoor (pre-dawn meal) and Iftar (meal to break the fast), especially for times when you might not have immediate access to food.
Prayer Mat and Quran: Bring a small, portable prayer mat and a Quran or a digital version on your phone or tablet for ease of reading during your journey.
