Umiam Lake needs urgent attention for its cleanliness

In re Cleanliness Umiam Lake v. State of Meghalaya PIL10/2019 before Meghalaya High Court Heard by Hon’ble Mr. Chief Justice Sanjeeb Banerjee J & Hon’ble Mr. Justice W Diengdoh J Umiam Lake in Meghalaya is often compared with the beautiful lakes of Scotland. It is a vast and beautiful lake that attracts a large number of tourists from across the country. It is surrounded by the lush and lofty East Khasi Hills. Moreover, there are small islands that rise from the water that look exceptionally beautiful and when seen from Union Christian College Peak, the lake emerges in all its beauty and splendor.  It is sad that rapid urban growth has transformed Umiam into a sink for Shillongs waste and natural streams/rivers feeding the lake into open drains. A PIL was filed in the year 2019 concerning seeing the level of pollution at Umiam Lakes cleanliness before the Meghalaya High Court and hearing is continuing. The matter was listed on 19.07.2023 and State submitted Preservation and conservation guidelines 2023 by way of an affidavit. Observation of the Court with respect to the Report 1.   The guidelines of 2023 published by the State appear to be more of a formality than addressing the real issues. 2.   The guidelines introduced by the State as disclosed in the affidavit fall woefully short of the expectations or the measures necessary to protect the waterbodies, particularly the Umiam Lake. 3.   In the absence of any other employment opportunities and in the name of promoting tourism, the natural beauty of the State should not be destroyed and the State should be alive to the problem. 4.   The State must indicate the measures taken by it to arrest deforestation, as stretches along the highways all over the State reveal felling of trees and more and more of the mountain being chopped off for construction purposes. 5.   Though, State claims that more than 72 per cent of its total area is covered by forest, it would be interesting to ascertain whether any recent survey in such regard has been conducted, if conducted, such report be placed before the Court. 6.   Several of the rivers, including the Umkhrah in Shillong itself are carrying such contaminated water that they may not be fit even to step into. 7.   Elsewhere, rivers and streams which are not perennial carry so much filth and dirt that people living downstream are deprived of the use of the water altogether. 8.   There has to be a more wholesome approach undertaken by the State and it is hoped that the setting up of an expert body with suggestions from knowledgeable citizens possessing qualifications in such regard would go a long way in the State preparing an action plan and persuading the District Councils to abide by the same. Clearbot Cleans Water Automatically With Energy-Efficient AI

Waterways Wonder: Clearbot Uses Energy-Efficient Artificial Intelligent(AI) to Clean Waters Autonomously.

An AI-driven sea-cleaning boat prototype constructed out of empty water bottles, hobbyist helicopter blades, and a GoPro camera developed from what began as two classmates looking for a free graduation vacation to Bali funded by a university project.

Since then, graduates of the University of Hong Kong Sidhant Gupta and Utkarsh Goel have gained notoriety for their NVIDIA Jetson-enabled Clearbot autonomous garbage pickup boats.

There are a lot of dirty beaches there, and the local community depends on them to be clean for their tourism business, adding that the same is true for touristic areas of Hong Kong and India, where they now do business. Thus, the concept to clean the water there was born.

The university friends posted their proof-of-concept waste collection boat on a website in 2021 before launching Clearbot and then simply forgot about it, beginning work after graduation. When a maritime construction business suggested a water cleaning project a year later, the two created their prototype based on the goal of clearing three tons of waste per day from a marine building site in Hong Kong.

The United Nations Environment Programme estimates that 11 million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean annually, accounting for nearly 85% of all ocean trash. The goal of Clearbot is to clean up streams before they reach the ocean.

Using an Energy-Efficient Jetson to Clean Waters With offices in Hong Kong and India, Xavier Clearbot employs 24 people to develop and implement its electric-powered boats that clean water and can self-dock at solar charging stations.

The ocean vessels, which are between 10 and 16 feet long, are equipped with two cameras: one for navigation and another for identifying debris that the boats have collected. Using photos they gathered in their early days, the founders trained trash models on desktop and cloud NVIDIA GPUs. Today, they have vast picture libraries from gathering on cleaning sites. Additionally, they have developed models that allow the Clearbot to avoid obstacles on its own.

Propelled by battery-driven motors, the energy-efficient Jetson Xavier NX enables the water-cleaning boats to gather for eight hours at a stretch before coming back to recharge.

Diesel-powered boats with people using nets to clear trash are often used in harbors and other waterways that are used by both tourists and companies. A crew of 50 people can often operate 15 or 20 boats in such situations. It claimed that a staff of 50 could operate around 150 boats using Clearbot, increasing intake.

Cleaning Waters With Energy-Efficient Jetson Xavier

In Nongstoin, India, Kingspan, a manufacturer of construction materials, is collaborating with Clearbot to remove oil and debris from rivers and lakes. 1.2 tons of rubbish are being removed from the region each month as a consequence of the operation.
