Shrine of John the Baptist's Head, Damascus

Today located inside the Great Mosque of Damascus, originally a Christian basilica, this small shrine is believed to hold the severed head of Saint John the Baptist, venerated in Islam as the prophet Yahya. Drawing on earlier Christian tradition Muslim historians are believed to have carried the tradition of sanctitiy of this site as attributed to the Saint John. Though it is one of the several other sites purported to hold the head of Saint John, it is also one venerated officially in the Catholic tradition (this is my personal implication from memory, please correct me if I'm wrong). In year 2001 Pope John Paul II visited the mosque, primarily to visit the relics of John the Baptist. Some elements from the earlier Christian Church (probably from the byzantine era), like a baptismal font can still be seen inside the mosque today.
