Ultraman Blazar Episode 4: Emi don't need no team
youtube
Im.glad Emi git a ficus episode. I hope the whole team gets something, but if not Emi is the break out character.
The Sea Angel kaiju was suitably strange, and the human action scenes were pretty great, but did this episode seem to have more ads than th last few?

Kaiju Week in Review (September 3-9, 2023)
Tumblr media
I was a bit nervous about GAMERA -Rebirth-; the animation looked dodgy and Netflix has a shaky track record with kaiju shows. I'm pleased to report this is the best entry in the genre that they've put their name on. Good characters, great action (brutal as always), and actual episodic storytelling that effortlessly weaves in elements from the Showa films beyond all the returning kaiju. Watch it immediately.
Tumblr media
Tie-ins abound for GAMERA -Rebirth-: a two-part novelization, a manga adaptation, and a prequel manga that sheds some light on [UNBELIEVABLY MASSIVE SPOILERS]. That prequel manga (GAMERA -Rebirth- code thyrsos) is being published online for free in both Japanese and English. You can read the first chapter here.
Tumblr media
In unofficial translation news, English subtitles for GAMERA.1999 (1999) and yokaipedia (2022) are now available. The former is Hideaki Anno's making-of documentary for Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris; the latter is a fun, child-friendly fantasy from Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki with a big ol' centipede-dragon at the end. (It's also maybe the first Japanese kaiju film I've ever seen with a major Black character.) I haven't gotten to GAMERA.1999 yet, though from scrubbing through it, it seems like a lot of dialogue was just ignored by the translator. Shame, as that's one I've wanted for a long time.

We have a teaser for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, as well as a premiere date for the first two (out of ten) episodes: November 17. (I am being showered with Media for my 30th birthday.) The big news from this trailer is that John Goodman is reprising his role as Bill Randa from Kong: Skull Island. I assume that's going to be through flashbacks and old recordings only, since he was eaten by a Skullcrawler in that one. We also catch glimpses of two new creatures, a dragon and a crab from what I can tell. The latter looks to be fighting a Mother Longlegs.
Tumblr media
Fandango and AMC have added mostly-empty listings for Godzilla 2000 on November 1. Fathom Events screened Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla on November 3 last year; despite randomly showing Tokyo SOS back in March, I gather they're making a tradition out of Godzilla Day. Note that the listed runtime is longer than the film itself. Predictions for the program: another message from Keiji Ota, the 2022 Godzilla vs. Gigan short, and the Japanese version of G2K. Interesting that they're running the last Toho Godzilla film to receive a wide release in the U.S. exactly a month before Godzilla Minus One has a wide release of its own here.
Tumblr media
Gamera isn't a meta-defining Godzilla Battle Line unit... but he's Gamera in a Godzilla game, so I've been using him in every match since I unlocked him. He's gearing towards demolishing flying units, with fireballs that deal more damage against them and knock them back. A pity that he's arriving well after those units were at their most dominant.
Tumblr media
Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons #3 still isn't giving me much to write home about, but the kaiju cult creeping to the forefront intrigues. Also cool to see Ebirah in a starring role.
youtube
Marubeni, one of Japan's biggest general trading companies, put out a bizarre commercial featuring samurai, zombies, a meteor, and a refurbished GMK King Ghidorah. The ad now has English subtitles, and you can watch a Ghidorah-centric behind-the-scenes video here.
Tumblr media
I cannot believe I have more Cleopatra Entertainment fuckery to report on with regards to their Shin Ultraman releases, but they're truly trying to take the "Worst Film Company of 2023" title from the members of the AMPTP. Their third attempt at a barebones disc is starting to reach customers... but the ones who already received the initial replacement disc are being told no more will be sent. @starestream is trying to figure out if they'll be selling the third edition on their site, since it seems buying it anywhere else is a gamble. (Physically, the third edition looks almost the same as the first two, set apart only by the "SUBTITLED" text on the disc.) Either way, it's another blow to a movie that truly doesn't deserve this.

Ultraman Cosmos meets his future host, an 11-year old Musashi Haruno, for the first time in the film Ultraman Cosmos: The First Contact (2001).
This was a prequel to the Ultraman Cosmos television series, and was released shortly after the series premiered, between the 3rd and 4th episodes.

Religion on Earth 3
The first reference any sort of religion of course was merely through the existence of Amazons on Earth 3. Natalie implying a Greek pempheon, although they do not appear and therefore will be overlooked for the time being. Superwoman originally being a rogue Amazon and Paradise Island not being mentioned we cannot gather anything else from this.
The first Religious imagery occurred during the JLA : Earth 2 #1 (2000) in which we see an flaming cross upon a plane.
Tumblr media
During 2008 we got two large examples of religious organisations in Earth 3 along with an introduction to a deity. Firstly in Trinity #11 we see a group of Luciferists fighting with a group of Satanists.
Tumblr media
Then in Final Crisis Superman Beyond 3D #2 we see some examples of expletives used by Ultraman referencing his deity. After he's obtained the book of the infinite he speaks about his religious upbringing. Mainly of Mammon, the Demon of Greed and how the religion is built around possession and worldly pleasures instead of any sort of spiritual enlightenment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Doring 2010 we had more implications of other religions during the animated premiere of the Crimes Syndicate end references to be Amazonss in the comics.
In Justice League Crisis On Two Earths Appearances are made to counterparts of Vixen in playing existence of African gods, Hawkgirl employing existence of Christian gods due to her name Angelque And Wonder Woman implying existence of a Greek Pantheon due to her name Olympia. Of course in this version Superwoman was Mary Marvel's counterpart, any reference to Shazam of course being a reference to the Greek Pamphion from which he gained his powers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The in Justice League of America #50 we have the first reference to Paradise Island going by another name on Earth 3. That being Damnation Island, which we learn that Superwoman has killed all of her Amazon's on the island and assumably in all her Universe.
Tumblr media
During the Forever Evil event of 2014 we are introduced to another counter part of Shazam known as Mazahs who is the Lex Luthor of Earth 3 at this time. This yet again implies a Greek pampion which is important because we know nothing of Superwoman's origin from this time period due to her deleting all information on herself.
Tumblr media
Finally during the Crime Syndicate #3 in 2021 we get a new origin for Superwoman aka Donna Troy in this edition. Where she comes from Demon Island where she was trained and sent out of to conquer the world. An unnamed counter part of vixen is also shown in the same issue.
Tumblr media
As a note of what we haven't seen that we could imply or what we have seen but cannot impy anything from. We have seen Thanagarians multiple times on Earth 3, but not in context with Egyptian gods. Batman naturally being a character very steeped and Christianity do to Gotham's gothic architecture, his proclivity to perching on gargoyles and his own morals. Owlman has never been directly connected to any form of religion despite connecting to the previous two points if not the third. We have not seen this but I do believe that if the Matrix Angel Supergirl arc were to occur on Earth 3 she would probably go by Satan Girl instead of Ultra Girl.

SDCC NEWS
Ok, so I don't mention a lot of things about comics, especially American comics but there are two upcoming crossovers revealed at San Diego ComiCon I think are worth mentioning. The first is Justice League Vs. Godzilla Vs. Kong where the DC Universe's premier super team had to battle the King of the Monsters and Protector of Skull Island.
Tumblr media
The second has fewer details but features a meeting between three heroes each from Tsuburaya Productions and Marvel Comics: Ultraman, Ultraseven and Ultraman Taro meeting Spider-Man, Captain Marvel and Iron Man. Not much is known about this one but this promo image features classic Ultra Kaiju Bemular!

I've mostly avoided any discourse surrounding Wonderful Precure, mainly because 1.) I don't want to get sucked into it (there's only so many hours in a day, and I work full time), and 2.) I for the most part genuinely find the show entertaining (as a dog person and fan of older shows like Scooby-Doo, I find Komugi and Iroha's dynamic a lot of fun).
But I knew when I watched Cure Nyammy's debut last weekend that there was going to be some discussion regarding her use of physical attacks on the Garugaru, and how Cure Wonderful and Cure Friendy's response to it essentially condemns the use of violence (in a Precure show, which is a franchise that in previous installments has relied heavily on action scenes).
Look, I'm not going to lie: I like action scenes in shows I watch, magical girl or otherwise. They can be very cathartic when done right, and shows like Precure, Super Sentai, Kamen Rider, and Ultraman tend to do them very right. Even as Wonderful Precure is airing, I'm also watching the original Futari Wa Precure and getting a kick out of it. (I also like lore and worldbuilding more, but that's for another time.) I found people reacting negatively to this part of WanPre's recent episode interesting, not only in the context of a magical girl show, but in the context of superhero fiction in general (which the warrior type of magical girl is a part of).
Twitter user @/MagicalGirlOTD made a small thread relating to this that got me thinking about the use of fighting as a solution to problems in works of fiction. Particularly, they commented that many magical girl shows that feature fighting run the risk of feeling the same all the time. Adding to this, they commented "This is the end result of the genre heavily favoring 'we can fight but we also need peace!' for the last 30 years."
It made me think of an old blog post by American comics writer J.M. DeMatteis (whose work I have complicated feelings about, though I admire his idealism and enthusiasm for his craft). In his 2018 blog post "Slugging It Out," DeMatteis spoke on the then-recent premiere of the CW's Black Lightning, and how (though he found it to be to a good start and was looking forward to how the plot panned out) it seemed to highlight what he called "the massive crack in the foundation of the entire superhero genre." As DeMatteis goes on to explain:
"No matter how much these characters talk about high ideals, non-violence or the power of love, in the end it often comes down to two people in costumes dropping buildings on each other’s heads.  (And the more street level, the more realistic, your story is, the more difficult those scenes become:  A space battle against aliens plays out very differently than, say, Batman beating the hell out of a common criminal*.)"
People like to talk about magical girls and how idealistic they are in areas like love and friendship; there's nothing wrong with that. In fact it's one of the things I admire about the genre. But one can just as easily see the same people also talk about how much ass their favorite magical girl can kick. (In fact, there are more than a few characters I'm introduced to through people just saying "So-And-So can kick [Insert other character/magical girl from another show they find overrated]'s ass easily!")
I don't think there's a clean-cut solution to this--it's just human nature, in the end. DeMatteis himself has spoken about how he's often tried to address this problem in superhero stories, only to be rebuffed by editors because doing so would call into question the very nature of superhero fiction. He's still happily writing for Marvel and DC, though, so he doesn't seem too bothered by it (but personally I do like his non-superhero work, since he doesn't have to worry about those limitations).
I'm not a pacifist, by any means. I think there is a time for fighting. And I like reading and watching stories that feature cool battles in addition to cool characters and fun adventures. But there's always a small part of me that does think about these kinds of things. Maybe I'll always be thinking about it, until the end of my life.
There's already a lot of magical girl stories where the girls end up fighting monsters and bad guys. There's also a lot of shows where the magical girl doesn't really fight (I personally like Princess Tutu and the way Tutu goes through her conflicts). Maybe this concept of not wanting to harm the monsters is something one doesn't really expect in Precure. But I don't know, I don't think it's really bad to show children they have a non-violent option now and then. Just my two cents.
(*Yes I'm aware that what Batman does is the subject of its own discourse; I'm just quoting the guy. And he's written for Batman, to boot.)
