Heeding the Call: Cthulhu and Japan

Depending on your interests, the name Cthulhu may stir feelings of some strange familiarity, or an excited, nearly existential sense of horror to come. Despite the fiction that birthed much of the “Cthulhu Mythos” being moderately popular, the cosmic horrors introduced by H.P. Lovecraft have morphed into a life of their own thanks to the work of his protege, August Derleth, leaving future generations to encounter the unknowable in various forms spanning video games, tv shows, movies, and perhaps the most popular forms, table-top roleplaying and board game experiences. Perhaps less well known, though, is the fact that the Cthulhu Mythos is exceedingly popular in Japan, and has a wide and exciting history of adaptations, works, and impact upon many of the genres we love in Japan to this day. Today, we’ll be taking a look and exploring that history!

The history of Cthulhu in Japan is a bit more diverse than you might initially think, and isn’t as unified as it might seem! The first bits of spreading horror came from translations of H.P. Lovecraft’s original works into Japanese in the 1940s, appearing in the horror publication Hakaba (or Graveyard) Magazine, translated by Nishio Tadashi. These early translations would prove vastly popular, and over the years ended up leading to numerous Japanese adaptations and inspirations based on Lovecraft’s original works.

Anime and manga fans are likely somewhat familiar with Kaoru Kurimoto, creator of Guin Saga, Hideyuki Kikuchi, creator of Vampire Hunter D, fan favorite horror author Junji Ito, and legendary mangaka Shigeru Mizuki, who all claimed Lovecraft as a direct influence on their works at some point. That existential, cosmic, unknowable horror is certainly present in Ito’s works like Uzumaki, and Mizuki’s interest in folklore and yokai make an attraction to the Cthulu Mythos a lot more understandable. Mizuki actually drew an adaptation of the classic story The Dunwich Horror under the title Chitei no Ashioto, simply moving the story and characters to Mizuki’s beloved setting of rural Japan.

Perhaps one of the most influential Lovecraft inspired creators in anime though is Chiaki J. Konaka, likely best known to many for his work on series like Serial Experiments Lain, Digimon Tamers, and Big O, as well as other series like Armitage III (which takes its name from a Lovecraft character!), RaXephon and Texnolyze among many others. Konaka’s career extends into the Tokusatsu side of things as well, having worked on numerous Ultraman series ranging from Tiga, Gaia, Max, and more, as well as many other series. Konaka worked in references to the Cthulhu Mythos into many of his projects, and even wrote his own short fiction; one of them, Terror Rate, was even published in English, and was even a guest of honor at the HP Lovecraft Film Festival in 2018!

Much of the spread and popularity of Cthulhu fiction in Japan is owed to a few people, one of the most notable being Ken Asamatsu. Asamatsu has spent much of his career translating and spreading Lovecraft’s works in Japan, running fanzines and other publications in order to spread his love of the existential dread universe. While Asamatsu has worked on a few manga himself, he isn’t exactly an anime or manga creator, but without his input and dedication, it is unlikely that these works would ever be as popular as they are today!

Existential, creeping, unknowable horror translates well to other mediums as well, so it should come as little surprise that video games share various callbacks and influences from the Cthulhu Mythos as well. Atlus’s Shin Megami Tensei series and its many spin-offs feature numerous callbacks to Cthulhu Mythos characters and creatures, with some of the most obvious being Nyarlathotep’s direct role in Shin Megami Tensei: Persona and Persona 2. Many of the other titles reference things like the Necronomicon, with that same text being the initial persona of Persona 5’s Futaba Sakura.

Aside from Shin Megami Tensei, there are less obvious, but somewhat hard to miss, references to many of the tropes and unique style of horror in the Cthulhu Mythos in From Software’s Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, and most directly Bloodborne games. Demon’s Souls in particular draws heavily on the existential, unknowable horror that is descending upon the kingdom of Boletaria and the secrets behind its true collapse, and the Dark Souls games similarly feature somewhat Lovecraftian ideas and monsters. Of the three, Bloodborne is the most direct with its inspirations, with characters routinely discussing the fact that seeing more of the truth may drive one mad, cosmic entities controlling, mutating, and destroying humanity, fish people (a staple of Lovecraft’s works), and humongous, tentacle-faced monsters (here known as Amygdala).

Ironically, however, there is actually another reason for the popularity of Cthulhu Mythos in Japanese media that helped spread its flavorful influence amongst various genres, and it actually has little to do with Lovecraft’s actual writings themselves. Instead, many Japanese fans encounter Lovecraft’s elder gods through the table-top role-playing game Call of Cthulhu, first published in Japan 1986, and the explosion in popularity was not only a staggering success, but it continues to this day! Although many Western fans might assume that TTRPG games like Dungeons and Dragons are popular in Japan due to some of their influences in fantasy anime, Call of Cthulhu reigns supreme as the most popular TTRPG in Japan, and its popularity likely helped introduce many Japanese to the TTRPG genre in the first place!

Call of Cthulhu is, essentially, a group mystery adventure game, and that seems to have really hit big with Japanese audiences far and wide, because the game has remained in print since its initial introduction in the nineties, and has fans of all ages and genders playing in groups, to the point that some places will find their rooms for group meetings rented out to play games of Call of Cthulhu! Recently, the game even got some favorable air time in an NHK news segment, talking about the game itself and the fun that can be had with it! With this popularity came the growth of a somewhat unique phenomenon: Replays, essentially narrative, semi-novelized versions of Call of Cthulhu campaigns collected and printed for other people to read, similar to today’s popular “actual play” podcasts and videos such as Critical Role or The Adventure Zone. Even today, Call of Cthulhu replays are extremely popular, with new versions being printed all the time, sometimes even adorned with amazing, cute anime styled art and other interesting little design choices, like semi-doujinshi level works featuring Touhou characters, and more! These Replays became so popular that they soon spread to other types of TTRPGs, and are the inspiration behind anime such as Record of Lodoss War, Slayers, and many others!

If one were to search Cthulhu on Amazon.jp, you’d actually find that most of the results are these colorful and interesting Replay books, almost more so than you’d even find the original novels and stories by Lovecraft himself! There are many other fascinating fan inspired books about the Cthulhu Mythos, including a personal favorite of Cthulhu monsters arranged in a book similar to those of Kaiju and Tokusatsu stylings (even featuring a cartoon Lovecraft on the cover doing the famous Ultraman pose). There are other small Cthulhu publications in Japanese, include a manga anthology called Zone of Cthulhu and numerous adaptations, and Gou Tanabe’s versions are even being translated into English, with The Hound and Other Stories already available, and At the Mountains of Madness coming later this year.

Of course the Cthulhu love isn’t limited to just print media; many anime have featured some nods and callbacks to the mythos, such as in the visual novel and anime of the same name Demonbane, which is even set in Lovecraft’s beloved Arkham. Main character Kuro Daijuji works with Al Azif, the living personification of the Necronomicon, to defeat the nefarious Black Lodge (a very probable nod to David Lynch’s Twin Peaks here). As mentioned above, numerous works by Chiaki J. Konaka draw from the Cthulhu Mythos, but Digimon Tamers might be the most surprising, with callbacks to Miskatonic University and Shaggai, as well as a computer AI that seems to have more in common with the Great Old Ones than it does Skynet! Another example is a fairly popular series, Bungo Stray Dogs, where one of the characters... is actually named Lovecraft! But that's not all! His "The Great Old Ones" ability is a reference to Cthulhu's origins. Probably one of the most famous examples is Nyaruko: Another Crawling Chaos, where the monsters of Lovecraft’s works are revealed to actually be aliens, but still very weird! The anime is a comedy featuring numerous Mythos characters repurposed or slightly renamed, such as Nyarlathotep as Nyaruko, the Yellow King Hastur, and more. The series of novels proved popular enough to spawn 3 anime seasons and other spin offs, proving that even if you take the horror out of the Mythos, people will still find it entertaining and… cute?

Speaking of cute, this brings us to a few interesting final tidbits about the Cthulhu Mythos and Japan. Aside from the direct popularity, the language change and differences have led to a few running gags in Japan about the series, one of which has to do with the somewhat infamous Cthulhu cultist chant, “Ia Ia Cthulhu Ftaghn,” with “Ia Ia” being pronounced very similar to the Japanese expression “iya iya”, which has a few various uses in casual Japanese, either meaning something similar to “um” or “no” depending on how and where it is used. The second comes from the fact that Japanese, being a syllabic language, actually has an easier time pronouncing the supposedly “unpronouncable” names of the Cthulu Mythos creatures, with Cthulhu being translated as クトゥルフ, or “Kutourufu”, which is not only a lot easier to actually say, but sounds oddly cute for the sinister elder god!

Cthulhu mania seems as popular as ever both outside and inside of Japan, with new games, movies, comics, and more drawing inspiration from the titles. Although Lovecraft’s own works are less popular than when the fascination started, the current passion for his ideas stems from the attractive allure of the unknown, the potential darkness lingering in shadows and dark pools of water. Whatever the reason people flock to the Cthulhu Mythos, it seems like we can look forward to numerous adaptations, inspirations, and callbacks for years to come… until perhaps even Cthulhu awakens! Until then, it’s best to keep your wits about you and stock up on your esoteric lore… You never know where the elder gods might pop up next during your next anime, manga, or video game binge!

Arkn legacy and arknthology fanfic 3

CHAPTER 1: start of the uprising

urile, malcaih, tobsia, azrel and rezile were fishing in a lake for food beacuse they were hungry, when suddenly a very large object fell from the sky And it did a very very very big splash and it sent water everywhere and our protagonists were now covered in water, uriel siad "waht teh heck was taht" tobisa siad "probably somethign bad" and then a galactron emerged from the lake and he started to look at malacih and then big beams came out of his eyes but our heroes avoided them and then a bunch of werid symbles appered in the place where the beams were fired and then they were replaced by big explosions and then azraal said "ew ned to run fast and get out of here" razlie said "yes" and everyone started to run away from the galactron reallu fasrt but then another big object fell from the sky and it was also a galactrno and our heroes said "OH SHBIT" and then another big object fell uot of the syk but it was nto a galactorn, it was something even werse, it was a galactrno mark 2, and then another big obejct fell uto of the skmy but it was not remiteyl reletrd to galactrno at all, it was a mecha gomora and then 3 darklops zeor fell out of the skie, our heroes thought that thye were gonna die. But then ultrasveen, ultremon gaua, ultramna agul, irno kign, firemna, ultremno zeor, ultramno geed, ultraman 80, zoen foghtre, ultraman orb and mirror knihgt apeered and they starteed to fight agianst the robots, geed then turned into his magnifcient ferm and then orb turned into orb trinity and gaia turned into his supreme fomr and then zero turned into zero beytond and then looked at our protagonists and siad "leave now, for yuor own safwrty" and tgen raziel telperted himself and the other guys away to his house, which costed him a lto of eneryg because it swa very far awya then uriel said "ew nede to git wepons like guns and stuff" and they got many waepuns like soem FIM-43 Redeyes, some 9K32 Strela-2, some 9K38 Igla, soem RPG-7 soem RPG-2 aand soem ak-47, then they got some armors and protective gears, then raziel grabbed his gun made frum many gnus, our heroes were now raedy to fight

chapter 2: the begining of the war agianst the macheins

our heroes went toward the door that leed to outsied raziel’s house and when they exited the house 7 t-800, 8 chiburiods and 6 super battle driods where in front of them, malacih stratde the bartle by firing at one of the chuibroids with an RPG-2 and after the roibot was hitted by the warheed only the lower body of the rboot remained and the upper half was nwo in amny pieces and then the super droids all pointed their arm wepon at uriel and shot lasres at him but he avoided in the saem wya that noe dodged the bullets in slwo-mtoion in the matrxi and then he destroyed 3 of them with a 9k32 streal-2 and then raziel destroyed a t-800 with bear hands by punching it many times reelly hard and ureil, tobise azreal and maalchi were very impressed by raziel’s strenght and then he did the saem thing to a chiburouid and a super battle droid and he destroyed the other 2 supre batltle driods also with baer hands and then tobisa deastroyed a chiburoid by firing at it with a ak-47 right in the head many many times , after taht azreal fired at 4 chiburoids with a rpg-7 and he sucefsully hitted all of them wiht the warheeds and then uriel destroyed the last chiburiod with a 9k38 igla and after taht maalchi destroyed 2 t-800 with a ak-47 and then raziel rippid one of the terminator’S heed off and then tobias destroyed 2 t-800 wit a rpg-2 and thne razile punched the last t-800 in the face many times and then he trew it in the air and he destroyed it by firing at it once wit a fim-43 redetyes, everyone else clapped in amazement at raziel’s baddasery, but then 8 mechawful, 10 JTE loaders, 5 heavy robot, 3 droideka and 2 scout robot appeared but after a very very lolng and hard battle the second big group of robots swa deafeted but then 4 legionoids beta, 3 king joe, 10 sentry bots from fallotu 4, 5 ION loadres , 7 anhelic gurads and 9 assaultrons frem fallout appeered, our heroes all said "OH CRAP" and then the rboots all got closer and closre adn closer towerd them and the 2 legionidos beat pointed the 2 big laser cannons that they haev toward our mian characters, our protagnosit were about to die, but then a bunch of big loights fekll frem the sky and they turned into giant heroes, one of them turned into ultraman tiga, one of tehm turned into ultraman dyna, anothre one turned into ultraman x antoher turned into ultremna hikair, antoher tirned into ultremon mebius, anothre beacme ultraman cosmos and another became ultraman max and they all ran toward one of the sevne giant robots and they all went toward a different robot and they crushed many many many of the smaller robots while running and they then fouhgt the giant robots, meanwhile our main charatcers fought the rest of the smaller rboots and they destroyed them all, x then turned into exceed x and he used the xlugger shot on a king joe and the robot blew up and the 6 other ultras all used one of their finishers on one of the 6 remaining robots and they all blew up, meanwhile there was a spaceship with 2 humanoids inside, one of them said "DAMMIT" the other one siad "it seems like we will have to intervene" the one who siad dammit then said "yes", and they both walked inside a telperter and they set the coordinates to where our heroes and the ultras were located and they telperted themselves here adn both of the humanoiud spoke in a voice that sounded exactly like the voice of a female humen.

chapter 3 : the 2 girl robots

suddenly 8 king joe blacks, 7 galactrons, 6 glaactrons mk2, 7 mecha-gomora, the showa version of mehxagodzilal, 8 assualtrons, 7 legionoids beta, 7 legionoids alpha, 8 robo-scorpions from fallout 3, 2 inpelaizers, 19 scut robots, 15 b1 battle droids, 16 pyor robots, 14 heavy rboots adn 13 dermoman robots appeared along with 2 completley unique robots, one of them looked like a beautiful asian woman who was wearing a mostly blue costume, and the other one was human shaped but definitely a machine, but they were both completely robotic, raziel looked at the 2 robots womne and said "who are yuo" and they introduced themself, the blue oen said "i am shibolena, the mechanical dauhgter of dr.hinelar created to replace his deceased daughter Shizuka Samejima whom he loved", the one that was definitely a mahcine siad "i am metal alice of the agent, i used to be the female second in command of the abusive cyborg robogog and then i lost his respect after being defeated bu the goseigers and then he installed something called a punishment bomb on me after rebuilding me and after a string of events i decided to set up a plan to get rid of him with one of my comrades whose name was buredo-RUN and at one point i sacrificed myself for him but tehn he destroyed me", and then she used her g-cup blaster on uriel but urile avoided the missiles and he shot at her with a ak-47 but it didnt do anythong and then the giant robots started to beat the living shit of the ultras and then the smaller robots started to give our protagonist a damn good beating and it seemed evil was finally going to triumph over good this time but then glen fire, ultraman taro ultraman xenon, ultraman ace, ultramna jack, ultraman great, zoffy, ultraman scott, ultraman joneus, ultremna chuck, mirror man, ultraman neo, ultraseven 21 and ultrawoman beth fell from the sky and they crushed many many many of the smaller robots and they all fouhgt against the giant robots but after a while all of the giant heroes were extremely tired and about to die but then they had an idea, they all combined into one powerful hero and then the very very very powerful giant hero siad "i am super warrior" and then he gave some of his energy to our protagonist and he started to beat the living shit out of the big robots and he was having the advantage over them but then metal alice decided to send more giant robots so she used her alice pad to send jikiro, narse, dragodos, 6 gloker rooks, 5 gloker bishop, crazygon, 3 scout bersekes, 4 gobnu giga, 1 gobnu ogma and hellzking to help the giant robots to defeat super warrior and the giant rboots wree once agian winning the foight, meanwhile our main characters were fighting the remaining smaller robots and they were fighting very well and they defeated many robots, metal alice and shuiboolena then decided to intervene adn they both ran toward our heroes and they both focused on one hero, shibeolena wnet tewerd azreal and metal aclioe went towerd tobias, sjhbiolena started the battle between her and axrael by firing a big laser at him with her rapier but azrael avoided the beam and then eh striked back by firing at her with a rpg-2 but she telperted just in time to svoid the warheed and then she reappered behind azrtaerl adn she slashed at him with her rapier and now his armor was slightyl damafwed and then azreal turned around adn he attemped to pucnh her in the face really hard but she avoided his fist and then she grabbed his left arm and then she puncherd his helmte many times but then azreal striked back by jumping in the auir but not too huigh and the he kicked her in the midriiff 6 times in a row and then he did a butterfly kick and then shibloena shot a beam from her sword at azrael’s helmte and it swa nwo way too damaged to be usefull so azrael threw it away at shibolena but she used a beam to destory it in midair and there was a big explosion and azreal used the distraction provided bu the explosion to sneak up behind shibolena and he grabbed his sword and he slashed her back 8 times in a row and she siad "OW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" and then he impaled her in the midriff and she suiad ow onec agian but even louder and then azrael pullet his sword out of her wound and she fell omn the grund, while all of this swa happeninfg metla aliec was fighting agianst tobisa, the foight was strated by metal alice and she started it by using her g-cup blaster at him but tobias avoided both of the missiles just in time and he striekd back bu shooting at her with a ak-47 but it didnt do a lot of damage and then she turned her alice pad into the alice sword and she made a blue lightning bokt come out of the tip of the sword adn she used it as a whip on tobias and he said "OW" every time that the whip hitted him and then the lighting got around tobisa like a rope and then she moved the sword up and it lifted tobias and then she moved the sword to the right and tobias was slammed against a tree and he said "OW" and then he landed on the grund and then metla aliec siad "i hope that yuo enjoyed yur loife, for it is about to end" tobioas replied with "dont sell the the bera’S skin before you have killed it" and seh said "WHAT" and then tobias jumped very very high and then metal alice used teh g-cup blaster at him but tobias destroyed both of the missiles with a rpg-7 and then she used it agian but tobias destroyed the breast missiles onec again and she started tu use it agian adn again and again and agani and tobias kedpt destroying the boiobise missiles again and againd and again and he kept getting closer and closre adn closer to metal alice’s face and he kicked her in the face and she said "OUCH" and she fell and then tobias landed and then he ran toward metal alice and he pucnhed in the face 29 times in a row but suddenyl she used her g-cup blasters on tobisa and this time he was hitted by the boiobsie misslese and he was moved away form her by a distance of at least 3,4 meters and he was now very wounded and then metal alice got up and she walked toward tobias and she used the lgihtnign whip from the aliuce swodr onec agian and she kept whipping tobias and tobisa kept saying "OW!!!!" and it seemed like he was about to die but then raziel herad tobias’s screaming of pian and he sneakud up behind metal alice and then punched her on the back very hard 3 times in a row and she said “OW!!!!!!!” and then she turned around and saw raziel and exclaimed “who are yuo" and he replied with “i am raziel, a master of magic and a martial art expert” and then punched her in the face very very very hard 12 times in a rwo and she said “OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” and tehn raziel did a round house kick on her and she onec afgain siad ouich but it swa even louderc and she once agian fell to the ground and then raziel walked toward tobias and he healed him with healing magic and then tobias got up and they both looked at metal alice and they started to walk toward her and she looked at them while still being on the grund and she siad ‘’plaese dnot hrut me’’ tobias and raziel ‘’oh boi we wont listne to what you just siad, in fcat we will do the exatc oppsotie’’ and metla alieec repleid wit ‘’oh no’’ and then they gave her a damn good beating and then they focused on the rest of the human sized rboots and after a short amount of tiem all of the human sized robtos were defeated and then our heroes were about to celebrate this but then malacih said ‘’WAIT! LOOK AT THIS’’ and pointed towerd super warrior, the other guys looked at the direction taht malachi pointed towerd and they saw the big rboots beating the living shit out of super warrior, urile siad ‘’ew nede to help him’’ suddenly all of the giant heroes who were at the begginning of the story fell from the skye, zero siad ‘’it seems like this guy needs our help’’ and turned into zeor beyodn, adn then giaa, geed adn obr all turned into the foirm that they turned into at the beganang of the stroy and and then thye all charged toward the big group of giant rboots and they foughted agianst tehm adn when it seemded thay the robots were gaining the upper hadn onec agian all of the begganagn heroes fused with super warrior and he swa nwo ultra worrior and then the fiev gyus all gave the enerby that super warrior gave to tehm to ultra warroir and he started to beat the living shit out of the giant robots and eh destroeyd them one bu one but then metal alice started to move and she grabbed the alice pad and she touched a symbol on the screen and then a spaceship appeared in the sky and the spaceship beamed up both shibolena and metal alice and then ultra warrior attampted to destroy the spaceshoip by throwing an energy ball at it but it was protected by a strong forec fiedl and the energy ball bounced back at him and he wsa nwo knocked out for a while, meanwhile shibloean and metla aliec were being repaired inside of the shup and also made more durable and shit and then they came out of the ship with 10 scut rboots, 14 soldeir robots, 15 t-1, 14 b1 droids, 13 super droids, 17 droidekas, 11 sentry-bots, 12 u-toms, 13 protectrons, 12 chiburoids, 15 t-800, 12 pyro rboots, 18 assualtrnos, 14 gurad biots form ratchet and clakn, 12 demomna rboots, 14 victoroids frmo megamna x 15 snow ridres who were alos from megaman x, 14 aperiod who also came from megamna x 11 blade btos frmo rathcet and clnak, 15 droideka mark2, 14 magnaguards, 12 t-900 and 13 sniper joes, our fiev heroes said ‘’OH CRPA’ and then the army of robots charged at our heroes with metla aliec and shiboleran at the frnot of the army, our heroes were scurred but then a bunch of voices siad ‘’NOT SO FAST’’ our heroes and the rboots looked toward the directions of where the vioces were coming frum and they saw many heroes, the heroes were the megarangres, the goseigers, sun vulcna, the fivemne, the gingamen and black kngiht 2, the dekarangers except fro master gold swan and bright, the magirangers except fro magishine, magimother and wolzard fire, the boukengers excepty fro zubaan, the zyuohgers, gogofive, the go-busters, the shinkengres, the changemen, the lupinrangers and the patrangers, the kyurangers and the kakurangers, suddenly the red kakurangers, siad ‘’we will not let you evil robots take over the erath’’ shibolena then replied by saying ‘’you dont have to worry about the erath, fro it is nto what we watn, WE WANT THE WHOLE UNIVERSE’’ goseiknight replied wiht ‘’well then we wont let you take over the whole universe you evil machines’’ and all the sentai teams fought against the robots with our 5 heroes, the fight went on fro a while and after a while shibolena and metal alice were the only remaning robots but then the spaceshipe reappred and 2 giant robots came out of it, the first one looked lieke shibolena and the secnod looked loike metla aliec and they could do all of their attacks but even stronger, and the 2 robot girls wnet inisde their respetciev rboot and tehy begna to walked towerd our fiev heroes and the sentai teams, but then the gosegiers sumonded Tensou Gattai Gosei Great, the mgearangres summoned mega voyager, sun vulcan summoned sun vulcan robo, the fievmen summonded supre fiev robo, the gingamen and balck knight 2 sumonned Super megazord zeta, a megazord epsilon, a megazord gamma, a megazord alpha, a megazord beta, a megazrod delta, the great warz, 5 king joe, 4 king joe blacks, 6 legionoids beta and 5 alpha adn an exact replica of the one used by a dadai in epsiode 18 of ultramna geed, antohre showa mechagodzilla, 2 showa mgoueras, baranda V from firemna, bronze demon from irno kign, enzan from ultraman fgaia, shinryoku who is alos frem ultramna gaya, 1 glockre pwanm, 4 glocker roko, 2 glokre bishop, 3 glactrno and 2 galactron mk2, then all of the evil robot combined into one big robot that swa like emgaozrd, the eviol fusion robot started to attack the good robots with many mnany manny strong attacks and it seemed like the bad rboots were going to win but suddenly an ultra slash shapped projectile hitted the very very very big bad robot on the left arm but it swa so small that it didnt do anything and the rboot turned around and saw nothing and shuibolena and metla aliec who were rboot look toward the grund and they saw ultra warrior who was smaller and he was 65 meters tall while teh biog rboot was 1045 metres tall and then it triedf to squash him but he grew to 1500 meters and he beated the living shit out of it and thne the rboot womnas tried to make the robot escape and it started to fly toward the sky but ultra worriro grabbed it byu the legs and then he strated to spion arroudn while holding the rboot’s leg and then he trew it as far as he culd and then the rboot landed on the grund and then he charged a big energy ball that took a while to charge and then the Ultraman Gaia Super Supreme Version revealed

Ah yes, finally I can talk about the highlight of today

So just to clarify some misinformation thats been going around, Gaia Super Supreme Version isn't a fusion, but it's Gaia receiving the light of Agul SV, thus upgrading SV to SSV

This suit was revealed in the Summer Expo 2023 stageshow

Design wise, he really looks like Justice rn with the similar chest protectors and head design

Otherwise sheesh he looks so MAJESTIC with the gold and black. And it's pretty neat that he has red in the front but blue at the back

Imo this is probably peak design as far as conventional ultras go

Tho Idk why but his face sculpt has a similar vibe to Legend

Also key point, SSV is designed by Maruyama Hiroshi, the designer for the early Heisei Ultras, NOT by Gotou, the designer for New Gen Ultras

But something that I need to clarify here is the dynamics of these form changes that I see confused quite abit of people, specifically on V3

So to recap, Gaia V1 received Agul V1's light and evolved to V2, but also automatically granted him the ability to access SV

Then Agul showed back up in ep 41 as V2 already, so the Earth granted Fujimiya access to Agul again and automatically upgraded him to V2, which I suppose it's similar to Gaia case that at this point, he could probably also access SV (just that he didn't for the same reasons Cosmos and Dyna didn't access their higher forms in Saga nor them, Gaia and Agul did in Origin Saga, because of plot reasons)

So people forgot the point that SV was essentially V3 and thought that V3 should have been the result of V2 receiving another V2's power, forgetting that SV was automatically accessible after getting V2

The point of contention is what happens after SSV, which is the next point I'm getting into

Another point is that this arrangement seems pretty funny in the sense that, this line of development can kinda continue on indefinitely. As in Agul can also receive Gaia SV's light and in turn, evolve into Agul SSV as well

Then Gaia SSV can receive Agul SSV's light and then further evolve into something like Gaia SSSV or sth lmao

But at the most, I suspect that they'll stop at Agul SSV

But imagine if they take it even further, indefinitely even as a meme lmao

I certainly wouldn't mind that

Gaia and Agul have taken the "evolution" type form change probably the furthest out of any ultras in the franchise interestingly enough

(Tho technically if u wanna count Noa, he technically has the longest evolution line but idk if we should count this, since its more of a "de-evolution" line instead)

Tho otherwise, we'd probably see Agul SV and Gaia SSV in the rumored spin-off

Personally I hope they come up with Agul SSV to include in the spin off as well

(But it'll most likely just be Agul SV and Gaia SSV since its still a Gaia spin off series)

So to be clear, I personally see the standard of the ‘Ultra Brothers’ is to be around the same level as the first 6 Ultra Brothers (Not Taro’s level for obvious reasons but u see where im going here)

(Which means yeah, im not using the literal basis for the ‘Ultra Brother’ title of defending the same Earth in the main M78 Universe for obvious reasons)

With that being said, there are a few Ultras that would probably make the cut for that

But to keep this post short for Tumblr to allow me to post it, I would be greatly summarizing the reasons for each Ultra’s inclusion wherever possible

Ultraman Ginga:

Considering that Victory’s character himself wasn’t as well developed as Ginga’s (which is saying something), we can only go by his official stats to see where he stands compared to Ginga

So we essentially see that Victory is more or less comparable to Ginga

Ultraman Joneus:

Based on what I can vaguely remember and rewatches, (cause I literally have no way to watch his whole series again in its entirety nor that the official info of the kaiju is readily available or clear) overall, he brings a pretty good package of speed, power, beam potency and durability

(So if anyone has the link to the full series, do dm me lol)

So the above are the few examples that I can say with reasonable confidence that would be a good fit with the Ultra Brothers, but below are some more controversial ones which I’ll also explain why

Ultraman Powered:

So as I’ve been consistent in saying that Powered has everything going for him, be it power, speed and beam potency, but its just that his durability is severely lacking

So I’m really not sure whether we can put a glass cannon up there to consider him overall as like Ultra Brother level or nah

Ultraman Great:

Sort of the same situation as with Powered, but I sort of see him as a ‘diet version’ of Ace as he has a multitude of beam attacks and could easily end most fight quickly but just like Powered, his durability is severely lacking

But for Great’s case its more controversial cause his feats of strength and power wasn’t as clear and concrete as Powered’s

I mean yeah sure he managed to sort of held his own against 120 000t+ kaiju but those weren’t so clear cut as being able to physically overpower them like what Powered did

In that sense, he’s basically still a glass cannon like Powered, just a more controversial one

Ultraman Max (Alternate M78 Version):

Yeah I felt the need to clarify which Max I am talking about cause im very aware just how controversial this Ultra is in general

But let me explain why his inclusion on this list just made him even more controversial

So there was that one scene in like ep 27 or sth where he literally threw Eleking (42 000t) into space

Yeah that’s Ultra Brother level stuff sure but tbh im not sure whether I can take this one feat seriously cause if we totally ignore this one feat, the rest of his performance throughout the series is essentially at the most L2 Ultra Level

It’s unlike Ginga where we see him threw Rekyum man into space in one episode and then we see him low diff Dark Zagi in another and then we see him solo a twice nerfed Super Grand King in the next, that’s consistency

Unlike Max with just that ONE significant feat throughout his ENTIRE series

But maybe we could just have the Max Galaxy help him out here as just like the Ultra Bracelet, its literally a deus ex machina

So in short, u could be SUPER generous but still be realistic and say that yeah sure Max is probably L2 Level but by virtue of the plot device that is the Max Galaxy, he’s a Jack-like’ character I suppose???

Eh yeah even i’m not so comfortable with saying that now but I’m just gonna throw that out there as food for thought

Other than that, I can’t think of any other Ultras (That are either obviously on the level of the Ultra Brothers like Toregia or just simply above like Belial) that would make the cut

So I actually answered this in a way long ago but I want to go more into the details here

Analysis:

So let’s address one of the biggest issue with Glitter Tiga first, so it seems that Glitter Tiga has always been shown to be 120m. And we know that all the capabilities of Ultras scale with their size which puts Gaia at a severe disadvantage at 50m

But the issue is, we have no idea what is the actual exponent to be able to scale down to Glitter Tiga’s stats at 50m from 120m

However, I would like to point out that looking at even Glitter Tiga’s stats and comparing it to Multi Type’s even at 53m, its actually a rather unimpressive improvement in stats considering that the former is more than twice the height of the latter

Tho if we scale Supreme Version’s stats to 120m as well, this will be his stats for those interested:

Flight Speed: Mach 60

Running Speed: Mach 18

Underwater Speed: Mach 12

Ground Latent Speed: Mach 14.4

Jumping Distance: 6 000m

Grip Strength: 288 000t

Brute Strength (est): 600 000t

Yeah its pretty ridiculous so lets just keep Gaia at 50m cause it wont make much a difference as you’ll see later cause we will essentially run into the same problems

With that being said, in order to stick with established canon here, in order to be as fair and accurate as possible, we will stick with 120m Glitter Tiga vs 50m Gaia Supreme

Firstly, lets look at the strength department, which I would like to break it up into separate categories, being physical strength and strength in terms of beam potency for reasons that you’ll understand why as I break them down individually later.

With regards to physical strength, Glitter Tiga is definitely out as looking at his Grip Strength of only 100 000t compared to Gaia Supreme’s 120 000t

And let’s not forget that Gaia even in his V2 version was able to lift Antimatter (150 000t), so although Supreme Version’s greatest physical feat was only lifting Super COV (170 000t), do note that because of the abnormal difference in grip strength and brute strength for Gaia’s stats, based on my rough mathematical estimates using V2′s stats, Supreme’s brute strength would be around 250 000t

However, if we were to apply the same math to Tiga, with Multi Type’s best feat of lifting Fire Golza (70 000t) with a grip strength of 50 000t, Glitter Tiga at 120m with only 100 000t grip strength would work out to only be 140 000t

So when it comes to pure brute strength, Supreme takes this hands down

But of course Tiga is more of a glass cannon in terms of his stats, which means he excels best in his beam potency

Here’s where I don’t know how to judge between Glitter Tiga and Gaia Supreme

On one hand, Glitter Tiga’s Glitter Color Timer Flash Special as well as Zera Death Beam are truly magnificent in their potency

On the other hand, Gaia’s Photon Stream literally one shot Zorim, a HUGE kaiju that is possibly tens of kilometers long and tall

But I guess if we were to really pick at straws here, I guess Zorim actually flinched in pain after the XIG launched all their missiles into a single concentrated spot on him, which I suppose that put his durability somewhat lower than Gatanothor and therefore much lower than Demonothor???

And I guess after Tiga obliterated Gatanothor with his Glitter Timer Flash Special, we saw that his explosion cause a worldwide shockwave of Gatanothor’s Darkness. And not to mention that Glitter Tiga also has the Zera Death Beam which obliterated Demonothor in one shot

With those two in mind, I guess Glitter Tiga takes this one debatably

If you look at in terms of physical versatility, Gaia takes this no question as the threshold for his strength is the highest as previously concluded

But if you take into account of their special abilities, it actually becomes more difficult to make a determination considering that each Ultra presented has their own interesting set of special abilities

But lets just briefly go through each of their special abilities, note that im basing Glitter’s abilties off of Multi Type’s cause its a reasonable assumption for Glitter to be able to dish out the same abilities as the former with more potency, same with Gaia

Tiga: Tiga Hold Light Wave, Tiga Freezer, Ultra Fix and Miracle Balloon Beam

Gaia: Being able to alter space and/or matter, teleport, Hyperspace Penetration Ability, Gaia Blizzard

(Including Agul’s here will explain why later)

Agul: Able to alter the molecular structure of others, teleport, able to manipulate spacetime to a certain degree

So I guess we can just narrow it down to Gaia as he possesses some of the most OP hax abilities which are to be able to manipulate space, time and mass. But considering that Gaia has Supreme Version, which means that the hax abilities that he demonstrated are likely to be further amplified and that cause Supreme Version is basically a fusion of Gaia and Agul, in theory, Gaia should also be able to demonstrate Agul’s hax abilities, so I guess Gaia takes this

So this is why im not so sure overall who should get the win here

On one hand, when in comes to vanilla combat, Glitter Tiga seems to have the upper hand cause he can literally dishes out nukes

On the other hand, Gaia Supreme is just broken cause of his hax abilties of spacetime manipulation

Like can Supreme version deconstruct Glitter Tiga to devolve him to Multi Type?

Or can Glitter Tiga freeze Supreme version first before he activates any hax abilities?

I guess this just comes down on who manages to make the first move

This is why its very hard to determine who would win in battles where both parties have hax abilties as it just always comes down to who could act first and whether the other hax ability can somehow nullify or counter the other hax ability

I mean other than that, we can only resort to just looking past their hax abilities and just examine their vanilla stats

Let’s take into consideration that Supreme’s flight speed is more than twice as fast as Glitter Tiga’s, u could argue that Supreme could dodge and outmanoeuvre Glitter Tiga’s attacks or just create openings to launch his attacks at Glitter Tiga to wear him down over time

And considering that Glitter Tiga’s attacks all have a significantly long cast time, not too hard to imagine that Supreme can just easily dodge them all

And I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that Glitter Tiga can one shot Supreme Version with Color Timer Flash Special or a single Zera Death Beam

But we also need to take into consideration that Glitter Tiga can activate the Glittering Shield which we aren’t even sure of its durability, like can it withstand Supreme’s 250 000t blows? Can it withstand Photon Stream which one shot Zorlim?

We have no idea

So its also quite difficult to say who’s gonna win cause we are not so certain of the limits of Glitter Tiga

Unless we take into account as well of the shockwave created by Color Timer Special and Zera Death Beam which could temporary disorient Supreme Version to create an opening even when he isn’t directly hit by the attack, for Glitter Tiga to follow up with another nuke attack to finally strike Gaia Supreme

Glitter Tiga takes the W here assuming Supreme can get one shot by said attacks which isn’t a ridiculous assumption cause Glitter Tiga is basically a walking nuke button

IN CONCLUSION:

So yeah its hard to really judge based on their overall abilities cause as said, if we were to take into account of their hax abilities, it usually just comes down to who strikes first, not to mention we have no idea whether one hax can counter or nullify the other hax

Not to mention that Glitter Tiga is basically an unknown quantity when comes to the extent of his hax abilities, same with Gaia and we can largely only assume both

Which Im left to analyze just based on their stats and attacks which Glitter Tiga stands a better chance to win here

But do note that considering that Tiga can only achieve his Glitter Form under really, REALLY exceptional circumstances and Gaia can literally go Supreme Version anytime anywhere, so the chances of this specific showdown happening are very slim, then we’re talking about Gaia vs Muti Type Tiga in most cases, which Supreme Version wipes the floor with (At this point, Supreme Version is 5 times faster and more than 3 times stronger than Multi Type)

Same question I asked you but this time out of 5 how would you rate the Heisei series (Tiga-Mebius)? I know Ginga-R/B aired during the Heisei era but they are considered, to me at least a different era than the Heisei.

Wow this is sure gonna be a huge test for my memory lmao

But generally speaking, and ive actually said this before that im not really fond of the format of the earlier Ultra Series episodes cause theres generally a very weak structure linking from one episode to the next, so its essentially back to back filler till kingdom come as these episodes are basically a kaiju showing up for whatever reason and just says: Hey, im here to kill yall. Maybe im just watching too much but it kinda gets real boring especially when you sit through an average of 30+ episodes of fillers per series

Also, cause of how the earlier series, although long, most of the fight scenes will always have the ultra in peril cause of a contrived reason and retarded stuff just for the sake of making each fight ‘dramatic’

Ultraman Tiga: 2.5/5

Still strongly feel that Tiga shouldn’t have won against Kyrieloid II, that whole light tactic was actually one of the first asspull moves on the side of the Ultras I can actually remember

But I am still fond of the memories of the Evil Tiga and Gatanothor arc

Ultraman Dyna: 2.5/5

Generally it’s a series that I enjoyed it better than Tiga cause of the more lighthearted and more energetic tone of the series

But I still don’t think I can put it above Tiga cause that’s all it has over his series

But for some reason, I literally have always loved that scene in ep 31 where Dyna and imitation posture before fighting, it's just so hilarious

Ultraman Gaia: 4/5

What can I say, this is probably my favorite Heisei series

Its just the energy man, the themes, action and passion. Not only nostalgic but you can literally feel the ENERGY and PASSION whenever Gamu calls out Gaia just before transforming

Hell, Supreme Version was literally the reason why I decided to start bodybuilding when I was in my pre-teens (SV’s battle theme ‘The Power of Gaia’ is literally still in my workout playlist till this day lol)

It’s just so hilarious seeing Gaia just overkilling all the kaiju every episode after he got with Supreme Version

And I really loved how the series built Fujimiya as a character that was initially an anti-villain cause of a misunderstanding of the Crisis simulation prediction, and once that revelation came to light, everything just came crashing down on him, the death of his fiancé and all his endeavors and his reason for living and fighting was literally all for naught then returning back after seeing the err of his mistakes and having perhaps the best bromance in the Ultraman Franchise

I was literally so happy to see them both fighting alongside each other for the first time many years ago, y'all should give this series a rewatch

I really hope to see something like this being emulated and improved on again someday

But there were pretty wonky moments due to the awkward acting of the characters, especially with how Fujimiya expresses his emotions lmao

Ultraman Cosmos: 2/5

This was actually the first Heisei series that I got into so im actually one of the rare few of my generation that didn’t start off the Heisei Saga with either one of the TDG series

Overall the tone was pretty much stagnant until it temporarily spiked (sorta) in episodes post-Eclipse awakening

But tbh there’s nothing much beyond that

Also not helping the fact that iirc, I also immediately started this series after rewatching Taro and Ace so yeah, the contrast weighed heavily on this one

HOWEVER

I really wish to see Justice again as well as the backstory of Legend, like they left so many questions about him after the third movie

Ultraman Nexus: 3.5/5

Overall, this was one of the better heisei series cause the sense of structure is more solid compared to the rest, except that they really slow walked the hell out of the Dark Faust arcs. Like wow, episodes where Dark Faust just shows up in Nexus’ Meta Field to only just change it into Dark Field before scooting which made the arcs UNNECESSARILY LONGER, like what a waste of time.

But iirc, the series kinda has the same issue with the anime adaptation of the Ultraman manga, where there are times where I felt that they sort of made the plot unnecessarily darker and being dark just for the sake of being dark at times which exacerbated the slow walking issues

Ultraman Max: 2/5

Well, time to look at the heisei series that understandably no one ever talks about

Tbh when I used to watch Max, basically everything else but Max himself was more interesting. When i talk to people about Max, I find that like others, you get a feeling that Max is a ‘one trick pony’ if you will, at around ep 8-11.

But I guess it’s because iirc, I watched Gaia before Max so the ‘step down’ in quality really contrasted heavily again. Hell, I think I didn’t even watch it in full for the first time and kinda quit halfway to watch Mebius before coming back to finish it

Had also one of the weirdest intra series power scaling ever, where in one episode, Max was getting beaten badly by a Mid Tier 2 kaiju, in another episode, we see him being able to just spontaneously grow 6 times his original size and spawn numerous clones without any drawbacks at all and in another, literally threw Eleking into space (Which definitely raised the brows of many), like bruh it was so messy

But the final arc tho, you can literally tell it was super rushed. Like the characters were on the verge of almost talking over one another that it seems that they just want to get this series over and done with lmao

And the Deus Ex Machina for this series was counterintuitively kinda not cause funny enough, DASH literally always had the way to supercharge Max all along lol

Tho I never understood why TsuPro chose to set this series in an alternate M78 timeline, I suppose it would’ve been MUCH MORE interesting if it took place in the original

But hey, at least we got a super rare Tier 4 kaiju that was IF out of this

Ultraman Mebius: 4/5

Kind of hard to rate for this one,

On one hand, my favorite 6 Ultra Brothers made cameos in this series and perhaps the best entrance of a final boss ever in the franchise

On the other hand, almost all of them (Except for 80 and Leo debatably) were severely nerfed to kingdom come

But I suppose the filler episode plots were overall just a better quality so I guess this bumps it up

But still, lets not forget that Empera had one of the most BADASS entrances of the franchise, so more points to that

Overall I love the fact that the New Gen has more structure in their series as compared to the early Heisei stuff, but I do wish that the new series could emulate some of their better points like high quality fillers and character development arcs as well as AWESOME bromances (looking at Gaia)

But tbh I really hope one day I can have enough free time to actually give the entire Heisei series another rewatch just to relive my childhood again
