Tiaras Owned by Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom
This is not a list of all tiaras owned by the British royal family. It is just the tiaras that I think were owned by Queen Elizabeth II. It is also by no means a complete list because we really have no idea what tiaras are still in the vaults at Buckingham Palace and the information about who owns what jewels is kept purposefully vague.
King George IV’s Diamond Diadem
Queen Adelaide‘s Hanover Fringe Tiara
Queen Victoria’s Oriental Circlet
Queen Victoria’s Ruby, Lasque Diamond, & Pearl Tiara
Queen Alexandra’s Kokoshnik Tiara
Queen Mary’s Girls of Great Britain & Ireland Tiara
Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother’s Bracelet Bandeau Tiara
Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother’s Strathmore Rose Tiara
Queen Elizabeth II’s Brazilian Aquamarine Tiara
Queen Elizabeth II’s Burmese Ruby Tiara
Queen Elizabeth II’s Sapphire Tiara
Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Russia’s Vladimir Pearl Drop Tiara
Owned by Queen Elizabeth II but currently or recently loaned out to a family member
Queen Mary’s Delhi Durbar Tiara - Queen Camilla
Duchess of Teck’s Crescent Tiara - Queen Camilla
Dame Margaret Greville’s Honeycomb Tiara - Queen Camilla
Queen Mary’s Lovers Knot Tiara - Princess of Wales
Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother’s Halo Scroll Tiara - Princess of Wales
Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother’s Lotus Flower Tiara - Princess of Wales
Countess of Wessex’s Anthemion Wedding Tiara - Countess of Wessex
Queen Elizabeth II’s Small Aquamarine Tiara - Countess of Wessex
Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother’s Double Meander Tiara - Princess Anne (only worn once)
Queen Mary’s Diamond Bandeau Tiara - Duchess of Sussex (only worn once)
Queen Mary’s Fringe Tiara - Princess Beatrice (only worn once)
Dame Margaret Greville’s Emerald Tiara - Princess Eugenie (only worn once)
Tiaras that might have been owned by Queen Elizabeth II because we don’t have any information about them being sold or broken up but they also haven't been seen in a long time
Queen Mary’s Diamond Lozenge Tiara
Queen Mary’s Sapphire Bandeau Tiara
Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother’s Persian Turquoise Tiara (possibly back in the vault like the Lotus Flower Tiara)
So that totals out to 27 tiaras, I wouldn’t be surprised if the number is actually higher. I fully expect all of them to have been inherited by King Charles III because in the UK items passed from monarch to monarch are not subject to inheritance taxes. This is an updated version of an older list here, there's also all of the tiaras actually worn by Queen Elizabeth II here, and how ownership of the tiaras works here.

This is a tiara rooted in tragedy. Princess Mary of Teck was engaged to be married to the future king, Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence & Avondale, in 1891.
But just a few weeks after the engagement was announced, he died of influenza.
His younger brother, Prince George, Duke of York, became the heir to the throne. He was also unmarried. Prince George had proposed to one of his cousins, who he was in love with, but she turned him down.
He turned his attention to Princess Mary, and she accepted. The couple were wed on 6 July 1893.
The tiara was a wedding gift to Mary. The name came from the committee of women, led by Lady Eva Greville, who raised the money for its creation.
They purchased the piece from Garrard in 1893. At Mary’s request, the remaining money from the fundraising event was sent to a fund to support widows and children of sailors who died in the HMS Victoria disaster, which killed 350.
Mary didn’t wear the piece on her wedding day - instead choosing one given to her by Queen Victoria - but it became one of her favourites. She chose it for one of her first official portraits when George ascended to the throne in 1910.
When her granddaughter Princess Elizabeth married Prince Philip in 1947, Mary decided to gift her the tiara. It is reported that the Queen still calls the diadem Granny’s Tiara” because of this.
Like Mary before her, Elizabeth loved this item and wore it often - including one for her first public appearance after her father’s funeral.
She had chosen it for portraits and at many official events over the years, marking it as her signature tiara.
Made by Garrard, this diadem features festoon and fleur-de-lys designs. Made of diamonds set in silver and gold, the original version was topped by 14 pearls.
It also came with a second frame, allowing it to be worn as a coronet. It could also be taken off a frame entirely and worn as a necklace.
Mary tweaked the tiara in 1914, removing the top row of pearls and replacing them with 13 diamond brilliants.
The pearls found their way to the Lover’s Knot tiara instead. The base of the tiara was also removed, and Mary wore it a separate bandeau.
Elizabeth put the two pieces back together in the 1960s, which is how it remains now.
Commenting on the tiara for Express UK, James Constantinou, owner of Prestige Pawnbrokers of Channel 4’s Posh Pawn, said:
"This tiara was a wedding present from the 'Girls of Great Britain and Ireland' to the Duchess of York, later Queen Mary in 1893.
It was purchased with money raised by a committee chaired by Lady Eva Grenville who became one of Queen Mary’s ladies in waiting."
"In November 1947, Queen Mary gave the tiara as a wedding present to her granddaughter Princess Elizabeth.
The Queen has worn the tiara regularly throughout her reign. She is depicted wearing it on certain issues of British and Commonwealth banknotes and coinage.
Due to the historic attachment to Queen Mary, this spectacular piece would most likely not come onto the open market, but hypothetically, if it did, it could certainly sparkle interest of up to £20 million."
How many tiaras are there in the royal collection?
There are dozens of priceless tiaras owned by the Queen and other members of the Royal Family. Many of the British aristocracy also own tiaras, wearing them at state banquets and on wedding days.
As well as tiaras currently in existence, there are a couple which have been dismantled to make other diadems. This includes The Surrey Fringe and The Nizam of Hyderabad.
Some tiaras have formed part of iconic moments in the history of the Royal Family.
The Cartier Halo, for instance, was worn by Catherine Middleton on her wedding day to Prince William in 2011.
And it is the Lover's Knot tiara that is most often seen today, as it is a favourite of the Duchess of Cambridge.
It was closely associated with Diana, Princess of Wales, during her marriage to Prince Charles, so it holds a special significance for Catherine.

“I don't know how the UK tiara assignment works and I'm not sure Kate has access to another tiara, but I really don't like the Queen Mary Lover Knots tiara. I wish she would switch it sometimes with the Lotus or ask the Queen for another. Queen Mary sapphire bandeau is gorgeous and would look perfect on her. Same with the Greville emerald tiara as it would match with her eyes 😍” - Submitted by Anonymous

Tiara anon, I think you trading around tiaras from other royal families would be great!
Hey :) Good, I’m glad that’s alright!! I know with these things I’d probably give a different answer if you asked me in a week haha. I’m only going for the main royals except for in Sweden and the UK obviously. But here goes:
Charlene- She hates tiaras and almost never wears them but I think we could get her on board with a tiara that’s a bit edgy so I’ve gone for the Cut Steel Bandeau. I think a tiara made of steel might win her over and it’s the smaller of the two Swedish steel tiaras:
Letizia- She loves a whopper but I think sometimes it can overwhelm her so I’ve chosen one that’s big but not the biggest. I always associate her with the colour red as well so ultimately I thought I’d pick the Mellerio Ruby tiara from the Netherlands
Maxima- Another fan of a whopper and thankfully she has the hair to pull them off. I’ve gone for one of my favourite tiaras which is haaaaard to wear, the Luxembourg Empire Tiara. I don’t think MT does it justice (sorry) but I think Maxima could
Mathilde- For such a quirky dresser, her tiara choices are quite bland. I’d like to see her try something a little bit different so I went for the Ocean Spray from Monaco. We never see it on Charlene and I think Mathilde has the hair for it
Maria Teresa- She has a huge range of tiaras she wears from big to small, all kinds of stones. I think she best suits the middle size. I’ve actually opted for the iconic Girls of Great Britain and Ireland
Stephanie- She has also worn quite a range and again I don’t think they do her justice. I don’t really know why I picked this for her but I just have a feeling, so I went for Spain’s Cartier Pearl and Diamond Tiara. I think she could give it a hairstyle that works and unlike some of the royal women of her generation she wouldn’t be swamped by such a big piece
Sonja- She also pulls off a big tiara and I love her so I’m going to just give her a massive tiara as she deserves it. I’ve opted for the Stuart Tiara from the Netherlands
Mette Marit- I’ve chosen Mary’s Ruby Parure tiara. I think it would be so gorgeous on her. Like holly and ivy on a frosty winter’s morning
Margrethe- She’s a quirky tiara wearer and she needs something that stands out so I’ve chosen Jordan’s Emerald Ivy Tiara. It’s not one of my favourite tiaras but hell, Daisy’s a bad ass
Mary- I HAVE NOTHING TO SAY OTHER THAN GIVE THIS WOMAN THE LOVER’S KNOT RIGHT NOW
Silvia- Another fan of the big hitters and she certainly suits them so I’m going to give her one of the most famous big hitters, the Delhi Durbar
Victoria- She can pull off some of the most difficult tiaras. I would love to see her in Naasut from Denmark which doesn’t suit Margrethe to me and I think would be set off beautifully by her dark hair
Madeleine- I don’t think anyone can pull off a tiara quite like Madde. She just stuns in them. She can suit so many of them. But I am inspired by her gorgeous hippy boho princess vibe and her floral headband and opting for the Mellerio Floral Tiara from Spain:
Sofia- She can’t have anything too big because she’s got such delicate features. But what I really liked was when she wore the amethyst further back on her head with loose hair and that made me think of Margaret’s wearing of the Lotus Flower. I think it could be a good fit
The Queen- Anything. Literally anything. Most of her tiaras are ugly. She has the hair for a big tiara and I like to see her with coloured stones because of her white hair and gowns, they stand out more. So I’ve chosen Empress Josephine’s Emerald tiara from Norway
Camilla- She needs a whopper. She is more fond of them than most royals and she works them out. So I’m giving her one of my favourite whoppers, the Braganza from Sweden
Kate- I associate Kate most with sapphires so what’s the most beautiful and impressive sapphire tiara? Queen Emma’s from the Netherlands
Meghan- The Cut Steel tiara from Sweden. Imagine this with her dark hair and her skin tone. Ugh.

The Queen bans Meghan from wearing jewellery from the Royal Collection
The Royal Collection, which is held in trust by the Queen, boasts a glittering array of crowns, tiaras, necklaces and earrings.
It is one of the largest and most important art collections in the world, and one of the last great European royal collections to remain intact.
With more than a million objects, it now acts as a record of the personal tastes of kings and queens over the past 500 years.
Kate wore the delicate Cartier ‘Halo’ tiara, loaned by the queen on her wedding day in 2011
They include the ‘Lovers’ Knot’ tiara worn by the Duchess of Cambridge in 2018.
Commissioned by Queen Mary in 1913, it has 19 diamond arches with pearls beneath them and has previously been worn by both the Queen and Princess Diana, who reportedly complained that its weight gave her a headache.
It was given to Diana, Princess of Wales, by the Queen as a wedding gift in 1981 and she wore the piece often.
The diamond and pearl-encrusted tiara was made in 1914 by Garrard and has a strong French influence with a neo-classical design of 19 diamond arches, each cradling an oriental pearl drop.
It was designed by the Queen’s grandmother Queen Mary and based on one owned by Mary’s grandmother Princess Augusta who married the first Duke of Cambridge.
The piece was composed of existing jewels Queen Mary had in her collection: the dismantled Some Ladies of England Tiara as well as some pearls from brooches belonging to Mary.
After Mary died in 1953, the tiara passed to her granddaughter Queen Elizabeth, who wore it regularly in the 1950s but phased it out.
While Princess Diana wore the piece regularly, she is said to have found it too heavy and gave her a headache. It was also a loan and not part of her personal property so it’s back in the Queen’s collection.
The Cambridge Lover’s Knot – part of the Royal Collection – worn by Kate, left in 2018, and the late Princess Of Wales wearing it during a visit with Prince Charles at a British Embassy dinner in Washington with Vice President of the United States George Bush and his wife Barbara November in 1985
Diana Princess of Wales was given the Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara by the Queen in 1981
Other famous headpieces include the Queen Mother’s Cartier Halo Scroll Tiara, which boasts 888 diamonds and was loaned to the Duchess of Cambridge for her wedding to Prince William in 2011.
The 1000-piece diamond tiara was initially bought in 1936 as an anniversary gift from King George VI to his wife in 1936.
It was then given to the Queen on her 18th birthday by the Queen mother.
Over the years, it has been worn by Princess Margaret, as well as Princess Anne.

Another item in the collection is the Nizam of Hyderabad necklace, originally created by Cartier in 1930s.
It consists of a long chain of 38 diamonds (reduced from the original 46) with a diamond-encrusted snap. The centre of the necklace is pave-set with detachable double-drop pendant 13 emerald-cut diamonds and a pear-shaped drop. The original necklace consisted of eight double-drop and three triple-drop pendants.
However, nine of the pendants (all eight double-drop and the larger of the triple-drop pendants) were later removed and sold separately. The necklace itself found its first owner in 1936 but Cartier repurchased it a year later.

The Strathmore Rose Tiara belonged to the Queen Mother and was a present from her parents in 1923.
It can be worn on top of the head or across the forehead as a bandeau – as the then Duchess of York chose to do in keeping with the fashion of the times.
But the delicate floral design has not been worn in public for many years.
Queen Alexandra’s Russian Kokoshnik Tiara is formed of 61 platinum bars and bejewelled with 488 diamonds, it was a gift to Alexandra on her silver wedding anniversary in 1888 and is based on a Russian-style peasant girl’s head wear which was in fashion at the time.
Queen Alexandra’s Russian Kokoshnik Tiara is formed of 61 platinum bars. The Queen has been pictured in the glistening creation on several occasions
Queen Mary’s Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. One of the Queen’s favourites, the tiara was given to Princess Mary of Teck from the ‘Girls of Great Britain and Ireland’ when she married the Duke of York, later King George V in May 1893.
It was made by Garrard and has a scrolled and foliage-inspired form with diamonds pave-set in silver and gold.
The magnificent piece also included 14 large oriental pearls and could be worn as a necklace or even dismantled and mounted on a smaller frame as a coronet.
In 1914, Queen Mary had the tiara adapted to take 13 brilliant-cut diamonds to replace the pearls.
For Princess Elizabeth’s wedding to Prince Philip in 1947, Queen Mary gave her granddaughter the tiara and a bandeau base.
This is the tiara most closely associated with the Queen as it is the piece she is wearing in banknotes and coinage.

One of the Queen’s favourites, the tiara was given to Princess Mary of Teck from the ‘Girls of Great Britain and Ireland’ when she married the Duke of York, later King George V in May 1893
Following the execution of Charles I in 1649, the greater part of the King’s magnificent possessions was sold by order of Oliver Cromwell, and the Royal Collection has largely been formed since the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660.
The most important additions to the Royal Collection were made by Frederick, Prince of Wales; George III; George IV; Queen Victoria and Prince Albert; and Queen Mary, consort of King George V.
The Royal Collection is held in trust by The Queen as Sovereign for her successors and the nation. It is not owned by her as a private individual.
The Collection is housed in 13 royal residences and former residences across the UK. These include Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Hampton Court, the Tower of London, Osborne House and the Royal Pavilion, Brighton, where works of art can be seen by the public in the historic settings for which they were originally commissioned or acquired.

An A to Z for HRH The Princess of Wales
T is for Tiaras -> catherine has a tiara type and I'm ok with that. We've actually not had many opportunities to see Catherine in tiaras but it makes me very happy to see how much she suits one! We've seen her in the Halo Scroll, a baby tiara, perfect for a wedding; in the Lovers Knot, a grown up tiara, perfect for a princess; and the Lotus Flower, my favourite that she wore last year and I cried with happiness. I'm so excited to see what she wears in the future
