Recycling Centre Site Visit ✨
Today I had the opportunity to visit the Hazardous Waste Recycling Centre in Gateshead (i): a tour organised by Suez, the site owner ♻️
I am pleased with how transparent Laura and Hannah, our guides, have been while explaining what happens to the local recycling and general waste. No question has been left unanswered, and topics have been discussed with the most environmentally friendly tone: everything led to the concept of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle 🙌🏻
The overall experience exceeded my expectations as the amount of knowledge I gained was HUGE ⛰️
This is how I would summarise today’s experience in few points:
1. Disposable vapes are a PROBLEM 💨
Strangely classified by UK Legislation as “toys, leisure and sport equipment”, they have been responsible for numerous fires at the recycling centre. E-cigarettes contain lithium batteries, which can easily ignite when segregated with the other waste streams. Furthermore, recycling one 200L barrel full of disposable vapes costs more than £2000 😰
2. Machines that sort general waste out DO NOT EXIST ⚙️
Due to complex composition of general waste, there is no machine or automated process able to effectively separate non-recyclables from recyclables that ended up in the general waste. At Suez, sorting is done BY HANDS 🤲🏻
3. Energy-from-Waste (EFW) requires A LOT of ENERGY ⚡️
Suez’s EFW facility has the potential to generate enough electricity to power 30.000 homes via waste incineration. However, the majority of energy goes back into the facility to keep the process going: fire is on 24/7 🔥
4. Separate food waste segregation at home is COMING SOON 🍔
Around 6.5 MILLION tonnes of food waste come from households every year. The shocking thing is: around 70% of that food waste IS STILL EDIBLE when people dispose of it (4.5 MILLION tonnes). Suez compared it to 90 Royal Albert Halls! 😱
5. Load contamination is a serious thing ☣️
Staff works hard every day to ensure skips contain the waste they have been designed for. When hazardous materials get in the same bin with recyclables, the WHOLE load becomes hazardous. This means that all the waste contained in that bin is very likely to lose its recycling potential. As it has been said today: “It is better losing some recycling in the general waste than contaminating an entire load of recycling and losing all of it” 😞 This is such a powerful sentence.
For those interested in knowing about waste disposal and recycling, I strongly recommend this experience. Event details can be found on Eventbrite and many waste sites are available for tour booking 🤩
Ah, forgot this: IT’S FREE 🤯

I've taken up reading historic newspapers as a hobby and I thought you'd enjoy this story from the Coventry Evening Telegraph. "Heavy Traffic - There was heavy traffic on all roads leading to Silverstone from an early hour this morning, but the filter colour system introduced at the last meeting was again successful and there were few long delays. In order to regulate the traffic, police had installed in the control tower of the former RAF aerodrome seven radio stations linked with key points over a 25-mile radius." This is from the 20th of August, 1949! As I write to you today, there are roadworks on the road between Brackley and Silverstone, which just makes me feel that news is 100% cyclical and there will ALWAYS be traffic around Silverstone. <3
I actually have a theory about this which gets into the sort of nerdy shit I'd make a video about if I was a man with a decent camera and an office. but so Silverstone is in several English counties:
looking at Silverstone on a map, it's clearly in what you'd call a black hole for ley lines. for anyone who didn't grow up in the UK in the era before the internet gave us something to do with our time, ley lines are alleged mystical power lines that criss-cross the UK and do sort of coincide with some motorways probably because that's kinda how the landscape is.
anyway, the idea is you can draw lines between significant monuments or like, random hills people have decided might have some connection to woo and then that will represent ancient energies. for no doubt very serious reasons the epicentre of all these is a tiny village called Parsley Hay halfway between Sheffield and Stoke on Trent, which I am sure does fairly well out of the related tourist industry.
more significant, in terms of British road mapping, is the existence of Little Chef roadside uhhhh cafés? diners? idk what you classify them as. like the druids of old they are now gone but their energies remain.
Silverstone sits in an uneven triangulation of former Little Chef spots:
not only does Towcester's especially hallowed, double Little Chef site unbalance things nearly irrepairably, three of these Little Chef are in Northamptonshire (the double and Old Stratford to the east) while only Buckingham is in Buckinghamshire.
these are the sort of forces that should not be messed with. it is clear why there are always traffic jams around Silverstone and it's not just because everyone invented Milton Keynes (not pictured, off to the east) then forgot to connect it to anywhere else properly it's because the roadside balance has been greatly disturbed.
now that Little Chef is no more this cannot be corrected. no amount of M&S Simply Food can ever neutralise the vibes and so it is that Silverstone is doomed to eternal traffic by the arrogance of mankind's hubristic building.

Related to your Instagram story about support group for ‘high functioning’/low support needs autistics, I’m really frustrated because my local adult autism support group specifies that it’s for people without learning disabilities only and I asked why it was so exclusive and they said it was the condition for getting it funded by the local council (I’m in the uk) because they were ‘already funding too many learning disability groups’. I don’t think I can do much to combat this because it’s a decision made a lot higher up than me but it’s really frustrating because I really want to be in community with all kinds of different autistic people and I think people should be able to decide for themselves if the group is relevant to them. I also help run the disability society at my uni but obviously that selects for the sorts of disabled people who manage to go to uni. I would classify myself as having low support needs rn but it’s changed a lot since I was younger and I still struggle a lot in ways where I don’t always relate to other autistics at uni, a lot of whom are late diagnosed and struggle a lot with unmasking. I’ve never really been able to hide my autism and I was diagnosed quite young so I often feel a bit alone. I don’t know if you have any advice/comments to this, but I really wish there was more inclusive community with all kinds of different autistic people with different needs because I think we need to have that solidarity. -S
I'm so sorry to hear that is happening, that really fucking sucks. I agree that you will benefit a lot from being in community with a wide swathe of types of Autistic people, as all of us can -- and your experience points to how limiting and oversimplified "support needs" labels really are. Though the term may have a more pleasant connotation than functioning labels, it still flattens the Autistic experience to the point of being nearly useless. Many people who are nonverbal are relatively low in support needs; some people who can mask have high support needs, and many of us fluctuate depending on the day or where we are in life.
I think you may want to look outside of formal institutional channels. Nonprofits and government agencies will approach Autism inclusion in a very dehumanizing bureaucratic way. What you need I think is a community space made by us, and for us. Look up any local ASAN chapters in your area-- and since you're in the UK, look up Neurodiverse Self Advocacy UK as well. Selfadvocacygroups.co.uk is another place to turn. See if you can find local groups run by these organizations, and try hopping onto sites like Meetup and even Facebook to see if there are ongoing Autistic social groups happening as well. there is almost certainly something. Eventbrite also has a lot of virtual community events these days, oddly.
I know that it's a big ask to tell you to create your own groups, but after you've gotten the lay of the land in your area and gotten to meet a few people, consider organizing small hang outs for people in the community -- movie watching parties, outings to accessible spaces, attending a parade or festival together, something like that. We take care of one another, and community is a thing we build, one relationship at a time -- it's not a thing we can trust powerful institutions to give us or grant us.
Thanks for your message.

LORE ENTRY 2: The Mojave Logistics Archaeological Survey Team (MLAST)
Built of a group of individuals handpicked by Nathaniel Godwynn, all from scientific, fringe religious, or military background.
**NO COMMUNISTS WERE USED IN THE FORMATION OF THIS TEAM.
Members:
Dr. Rosalind Byne: (age 42) Once a well respected Corporal in the US Army Corp of Engineers before being dishonorably discharged for stealing state secrets. It is commonly believed that Nathaniel Godwynn was her lover in the time period prior to her theft. The documents she is said to have stolen were then, and remain, classified. Interventions were made on her behalf by the Mojave Logistics legal team and her record was wiped clean though she is banned from further participation in the military. Education: PHD in Archaeology from Massachussettes Institute of Technology (MIT) Bachelors in Anthropology (MIT)
Rosy Byne: (age 21) Daughter of Rosalind and youngest member of the team. Known to be brilliant and "an absolute joy to be around," it is often said the team would've fallen into their dark times sooner had she left them to their own devices. Though she had no formal education she proved in the long run to be one of the most valuable members of the team and had a knack for "feeling out an area" and locating harder to reach areas of excavation sites and cave depths. Many a cavern was mapped with her jubilant assistance.
Daniel Rosenthal: (age 44) Transferred directly over from the UKSF as part of a large real estate deal negotiated on behalf of the UK government. Some believe Nathaniel Godwynn financed the purchase specifically to acquire Rosenthal. He was known in various circles, including a late stage high level Thelema oriented crowd known to play host to both NASA Rocket Scientists and cult religious leaders alike. Very likely one of the only living people ever to accomplish a true to life feat of magic, harnessing powers mankind is not meant to know.
Tyrone Bowens: (age 25) Originally from one of the worst ghettos in America, Tyrone showed promise as both an athlete and a scholar from an extremely early age. Upon the loss of his parents at age 15 he was moved across the country to live with his aunt, Tameika Bowens, a VP of Strategic Acquisition who worked closely with Nathaniel as far back as the initial public offering of Godwynn Enterprises. Within 3 months of the move, Tyrone was working as an intern and in-office assistant to the entire Strategic Acquisition team. His role on the survey team saw him responsible for the team's relationship to the local communities surrounding potential research areas. Most that knew him before his untimely death, remember him as a gentle and funny individual aside from his known lovers, who tend to say quite the opposite.
Robert Orange: (age 56) Older brother of Agent Russel Orange, head of security for ML and GE. While both brothers exhibited qualities their own mother referred to as "textbook fuckup traits," Robert had far fewer of the redeeming characteristics present in his younger sibling. This fact conjured a hard life, full of frustration and self victimization which led to an addiction to morphine and a penchant for pharmaceutical grade methamphetamines that eventually careened out of control and siphoned off the little bit of a life he had pieced together. During this time Russel and Robert lost contact for years prior to reuniting in late 2015 after the loss of Russel's wife, Magdalene Godwynn. After a few years of working closely together at the helm of security, Russel lobbied to get his brother a place on MLAST where he would provide security services as well as, and this is generally unknown, keep Agent Orange abreast of the research conducted.

Day 68 - 12 November - Samarkand
Woke up quite late after a big day the day before. The breakfast in the new hotel was not very good and we were slightly scratching at what to eat, I had lots of pancakes with nutella which is not the basis of a balanced diet. We mobilised and walked round and got some boxes to send the things we had bought in the market back to the UK. We got a couple from shops, the one we ended up using had previously housed tea imported from Kenya with the great name for an Uzbek company of Amir Tea. With the box we then went to the market to look around, we actually were found by one of the ladies from the market on Sunday who had a stall in the bazar and awkwardly had to say we didn’t want any more suzani.
We went back to hotel and packed the box. We put a couple of other things in the box we didn’t want to carry or were finished using. We went to dhl who quoted £275 to ship which we balked at. We then took Yandex to a post office and had a very interesting experience waiting in a slightly chaotic queue with ladies sending care packages, often involving cigarettes. The lady in the post office put our box in a hessian sack and we wrote our address on top of it. It was lots cheaper than the DHL price thankfully.
We then went to this well reviewed restaurant further out (it seems that lots of the real life of Samarkand happens quite far out of town) which specialised in shish kababs which were very nice. We had a very sweet waiter who was very keen to speak English when he found out where we were from and who came to speak to us when he found an excuse to serve us. He said he was Persian, which I took for Tajik which is possibly the majority ethnicity in Samarkand even though the census says majority Uzbek, as many Persian speakers were classified as Uzbek in soviet times. After that we took a yandex to this pub near the Registan. There is an English couple who seem to be doing an almost identical trip round Uzbekistan who we have seen on the train to Khiva, in Bukhara and then we walked past in the street (we see lots of the same tourists at the main sites as it is low season and there are really clear sights to see). They then came into the empty pub when were there, although they sat in a different place to us. After our drink we walked back home and went to bed.
Day 69 - 13 November - Samarkand > Tashkent
We woke up to the sound of rain, which was unexpected. It has been cold but I didn’t think it really rained here but I guess it does! We checked out and went to the Afrosyab museum, that deals with the pre Islamic history of Samarkand (mainly Sogdian) It was quite interesting but very like lots of the museums we have been to. We then to Ulug-Beg Observatory which was very small but had a little exhibit on Ulug’s scientific work and then the remains of a big part of the observatory sextet but not a lot else (it was cool though!) Before we joked about seeing the English couple and they were there again!
We went to art café norgis again for lunch we we wanted some veg. After, we asked around for a bit and got our bags and went to the station for our train. The train was very comfortable and made the ground very quickly.
When we got to Tashkent, it was sleeting and was very cold but also quite atmospheric. We got the metro to Kosmonavtlar metro that was an amazing station with murals of kosmonauts on it. We checked into the hotel and immediately hot footed it to the bus station to book our bus to Bishkek. The station was about half an hour on the metro and when we had booked it was getting a bit late. We went to the food court of this mall and had a rather nice light meal before hopping on the metro home again and going to bed.
Day 70 - 14 November - Tashkent > Bishkek
We got up and went to the gym in the hotel before breakfast. Then checked out and got some photos taken for our Indian visa. We then went to a cafe and applied for the Indian visa which was possibly the most stressful thing we have done on the trip so far. The site is glitchy and they ask for loads of information, it took us a couple of hours before we submitted. A bit shell shocked we went to get lunch at this Korean place we had seen the last time we were in Tashkent. It was very tasty and we were nice a full getting ready for our 14 hour bus!
We went to the bus station and got on the bus in plenty of time. The bus beside us had beds and looked pretty lush, ours was a normal old coach. We had changed some money in the station so we had Kazakh money for when were across the border (the route to Bishkek goes through Kazakhstan as its the fastest way).
We t the bus for about an hour till we got to the border. We got off, there was no signage and they hadn’t told us where the busses clicked you up. We went on a long walk through railings corridors to the exit point, there was lots of queue jumping in exit queue but we managed to get through. It was then another long walk to the entry gates and with the cold and the dark and the bright lights it felt unite cinematic. At passport control the border officer looked at my passport, got up and asked someone about Irish visa reqs which for a second made me fear I had got it wrong and that i needed a visa! However he sat down, stamped the passport and asked me lean in when he gave me my passport back. He then said ‘welcome to Kazakhstan’ in a very friendly voice and I immediately relaxed., Going through the next door, showing my stamp, another soldier saw my passport and then said ‘ahh! Conor McGregor!’, which I guess I should thank The Notorious for, even if he’s the blurst!
We got through the gates into the cold and then couldn’t find the bus! We walked up then back down again, using google translate, we eventually found a place where people were waiting. Nin and I had both identified people on the bus who we knew who were all waiting there. We waited for bus for ages in what was definitely sub zero temperatures. The English couple showed up again! Evidently on a later bus. The bus finally came about 2 hours after we had got off. We got back on bus, it was very tiring but I found it difficult to sleep and had forgotten my neck pillow in my main bag!. Looking through the window I could see snowy mountains in the distance through the dark.
We got to Kyrgyz border, which being 4am was more deserted (although I think this is a much less busy crossing ) We got through quickly but still had to wait for quite a long time (maybe 30 mins) and was about minus 3 or 4. I was very happy with the warm jumper and puffs coat I had, as well as my massive shawl which really came into its own.
Back on bus I tried not to sleep and to stay awake so I could sleep more in the hotel but I must have done a bit. We got to the station about 40 mins outside Bishkek, Nin looked on Yandex and a guy was right there! It was quite smooth but near the end there was a massive traffic jam at one of the worst light inter changes I’ve ever seen. Got to hotel and had breakfast and then straight to bed!
