J Hus - Spirit (Official Video)
youtube
Momodou Lamin Jallow (born 1996) known professionally as J Hus, is a British rapper and singer who has been credited with pioneering the genre Afroswing.[2][3][4] He is currently signed to Black Butter Records.[5] He gained popularity in 2015 following the release of his song "Dem Boy Paigon".[6]
Afroswing, also known as Afrobashment, or less commonly Afrobbean, or Afrowave[1][2][3] is a genre of music that developed in the UK during the mid-2010s, derivative of dancehall and afrobeats, with influences from trap, British hip hop, R&B, and grime.[4][5][1][6] Commercially, the genre has been very successful, with many afroswing artists making it into the British charts.[1][7][4][8]

10/05/24: Beyond the Baseline -
This exhibition held in the British Library showcases 500 years of Black British Music to document the impact and influence that African and Caribbean musicians have had on British culture. It explores its origins up to contemporary genres like grime, jungle & afroswing which I have explored throughout my narrative and sample making.
Art works like club night posters, records, photography & short films were featured to convey the influence music has had throughout the media, expanding perceptions of Black British individuals making music and bringing together communities to celebrate the culture. For centuries, Black communities have created music in the Uk but this exhibition hasn’t just showcased what the music means, it has shown where these sounds were born (clubs, carnivals, stages, auditoriums).
I decided to include this research in my blog since I feature the influence of contemporary music in my zine as it is a very important aspect to Black British lives in the Uk but it is important to note how long ago this style of music began.

Killertunes Shy feat Not3s x Bz (Lyrics Video)
On the back of recent collaborations with afrobeats legend Wizkid, and Latin music icon J Balvin, award-winning Nigerian producer, and songwriter KILLERTUNES has linked up with UK rap trailblazer NOT3S, and fast-rising South London artist BZ for a massive new single titled ‘SHY’. Serving as the first single from his forthcoming sophomore album KillaXtra 2, ‘Shy’ is a perfect fusion of UK rap and afropop music that reveals the new musical universe that Killertunes is exploring this year.
Recorded at the renowned Platoon7 studios in London, ‘Shy’ fuses Killertunes’ moody instrumentation driven by lush guitar and horn arrangements, with BZ’s braggadocious lyrical delivery, and Not3s’ trademark melodic rap sensibilities. Together, they deliver a smooth UK rap and afroswing fusion track that is laced with excellent jazz elements, and held together by Killertunes’ soft infectious hook that lets listeners lose all their inhibitions to this glorious track perfect for late summer nights.
Celebrated as one of the most creative soundsmiths coming out of Africa, the award-winning Killertunes boasts an incredible and award-winning discography as a producer and songwriter, with credits that include working with global music icons such as Wizkid, J Balvin, Mr. Eazi, and Tiwa Savage, as well as afrobeats rising stars like Joeboy, Mayorkun, and Ladipoe, to mention a few. As he enters his new musical era and taps into his international sounds, ‘Shy’ offers an amazing early indication of what fans and critics can expect from Killertunes going forward.
Out now via Tii Ent / emPawa Africa, ‘Shy’ is the first single to be taken from Killertunes’ highly anticipated sophomore album ‘KillaXtra 2’
