POLYSOMN – KAIRON; IRSE!
Main Genres: Space Rock, Shoegaze A decent sampling of: Neo-Psychedelia, Progressive Rock, Post-Rock
I’m not fully convinced that this album isn’t just rock music from an advanced society of muscular, androgynous space fairies who are trying to communicate with us mere mortals from beyond their sacred forested planet with the sound of their warm polytonal screeches. I mean that in the best way possible.
Anyhow, assuming the name ‘Kairon; Irse!’ isn’t just an alias for a group of space aliens, Kairon; Irse! are a Finnish band that make music that can categorically be described as a form of shoegaze, although their music doesn’t closely resemble much of the classic early 90s ‘scene that celebrates itself’, or even many of the ‘nu-gaze’ revival bands. If the music made by most shoegaze bands is characterized by hazy reverb that melts vocals, guitars, and other instrumentals into an agreeable solution, then the music of Kairon; Irse! is more a fusion of prog and space psychedelia with heavy reverb and dense layers of vocals and sonic guitar fluids that burn, bubble, and fume together in a series of brilliant chemical reactions. I had previously really enjoyed discovering their 2014 LP Ujubasajuba last year with its explosive density and soaring riffs so I decided to check out their new 2020 project Polysomn and I’d say it’s just as good, if not a little better.
Kairon’s discography is mostly characterized by shorter album track lists with longer tracks that are usually over 7 minutes, with Polysomn being the first album in their discography to feature a more conventional 9 track album run with no songs over the 7 minute mark. This does not, however, represent a compromising of the bands songwriting ambitions so much as it represents an attempt to condense the band’s intricate songwriting into tighter spaces, and I find that this results in songs that are even more energetic and dazzling than previous material. The first half of this LP is very chaotic, with “Retrograde” and “An Bat None” in particular being two songs formed by brilliant flash floods of glittering sonic fluid that submerge the listener into a brilliant underwater lights show while somehow simultaneously drifting through space dust. “An Bat None” is followed by the more mellow psychedelia of “Mir Inoi” which transitions into the building, colourful intensity of “Altair Descends” which eventually combusts into the rainbow inferno of “Hypnogram” which serves as the album’s highest climax. “White Flies” is the only track where I find the album’s colourful noises a bit grating, but it’s still a very interesting listen regardless.
It’s just really great to know that there are artists like Kairon; Irse! who are still making incredibly ambitious rock music in 2020, and Polysomn is just bursting with life, energy, and all sorts of colours. One day I hope to visit the strange, sublime planet that band members Kohal, Luhta, Lehdontie, and Melet are all clearly from. In the meantime, check this one out if you wanna transcend your mortal existence. 8/10
Highlights: “Retrograde”, “An Bat None”, “Hypnogram”, “Altair Descends”

Kairon; IRSE — The Defect in That One is Bleach / We're Hunting Wolverines (2011, self-released) psychedelic | shoegaze | post-rock #psychedelic #shoegaze #dream_pop #post_rock

Primer nueva quincena Completa; malditos impuestos, los pinches odio.
Me enteré que el lunes hay puente. Yesss. Voy a leer y programar mucho.

Kairon; IRSE! Interview
Kairon; IRSE!
2014’s shoegaze-prog masterpiece, ‘Ujubasajuba’, was the album that started the phenomenon that is Kairon; IRSE! Now, the band is back with another incredible body of work, ‘Runiation’. The Finnish foursome describe their music as an appreciation of the ideas and overall mentality of experimental pop musicians of the 60s and 70s, combined with a modern approach and original musical vision. Whereas the debut album was largely born out of improvisation and jam sessions, ‘Ruination’ is the fruit of two years of careful composing and arranging work, taking control of the chaos. On 'Ruination' the curiously named quartet heads further, beyond the point of no return, into their own world of sound, where power chords, arpeggios and quirky vocal harmonies flow… We talk to Niko Lehdontie about jamming, aiming for variety and The Eric Andre Show…
TSH: What do you feel are the key traits that define your music?
Niko: Fuzzy, weird and spacey.
TSH: Whilst forming new music, what’s the process commonly like?
Niko: First we make parts, themes or even a whole song by ourselves individually and then we take them to our rehearsal place and everyone joins in for arrangement. This arrangement part usually involves lots of jamming and recording together.
TSH: ‘Ujubasajuba’ was one of 2014’s best records. When you look back at this body of work, what stands out most?
Niko: I think that album captures our live sound really well. Those songs evolved during a few years of playing them live and improvising new parts etc. You can really hear that. I'm really happy with the production but nowadays we play together better overall.
TSH: Also, with a track like ‘Valorians’, how did the band flesh out and structure such a fantastic track?
Niko: We did the core of this song together with Lasse. We just combined our theme ideas and noticed that they came along really well. It’s a really simple song.
TSH: ‘Ruination’ further exemplifies the band’s amazing prowess. What does a track like ‘Starik’ signify to you personally?
Niko: To me, it’s the album’s most energetic song. I’m also very satisfied with the sound of this track.
TSH: Also, as you formed ‘Porphyrogennetos’, what was the trickiest part?
Niko: It is actually one of the easiest songs on the record to make, at least for me anyway. The most difficult part with our batch of songs is the live situation, as in the amount of effect pedals we need to use and the amount of stomping that we have to do.
TSH: Can you give us an insight into the narratives and themes that were central to ’Ruination’?
Niko: The musical themes were largely influenced by concept albums and classic 60´s sounds. I wanted it to sound a little bit like it would be a soundtrack for some old folklore tale, but not in a power/folk metal way… More in a weird druggy way.
TSH: What’s pleased you most with the band’s progression to date?
Niko: That we have progressed with our music and are getting better at playing together. Also I’d like to think that all of our albums are sounding a bit different, which is one of our main goals. We don’t want to make the same album twice.
TSH: Can you talk us through some of the challenges and obstacles you’ve faced as band in the last few years…
Niko: Well nothing huge I guess. Just the basic stuff: TIME and MONEY. Stuff which every band is confronted by.
TSH: The underground following you guys have is truly so loyal and individuals are really admiring your music. How amazing is it to have people connect to your music and apply it to their lives?
Niko: It’s really uplifting. It gives us lots of inspiration to continue touring and playing gigs. Otherwise we would just do this in a basement by ourselves.
TSH: What sort of music have you been admiring mostly in recent times?
Niko: I’ve been listening to lots of Flying Lotus and Kendrick Lamar. I really like the production on their albums because they are so complicated, multi-layered and there is so much happening in a musical sense. Flying Lotus’ ‘You’re Dead!’’ is in my opinion Zappa’s Uncle Meat of this decade.
TSH: What sort of TV do you guys like to watch?
Niko: All sorts, but our mutual favourite is The Eric Andre Show.
TSH: Outside of music, how do you like to unwind?
Niko: Making more music.
TSH: What matters most to Kairon; IRSE! as you look ahead?
Niko: We hope that we can start crafting a new record as soon as possible. Also, we are really looking forward to our upcoming European tour!
