It really says something about heavyweight when every single striker, aside from Stipe and Lewis, that has fought Francis Ngannou up to this point has decided to just go “fuck it, I gotta throw the big punch NOW” on Ngannou. That’s exactly what he wants.

Alonzo Menifield stops Paul Craig in the 1st round!

Craig throws a spinning back kick. Instead of ducking out, Menifield follows Craig’s back, pushes him to the ground, and delivers a bomb that knocks Craig out. After a couple of follow up shots, Dean steps in to stop the fight.

Happy that they have Cormier doing DETAIL on ESPN+. Don’t care for Kobe Bryant but it is a great show and honestly I think the format fits combat sports more than it does any other sport. And DC is a good guy to do breakdowns.  Gonna go give it a look now.

Eryk Anders stops Vinicius Moreira in the first round!

Anders desperately needed something to rebuild his stock and his self-confidence following his 3 fight losing streak (1-4 in last five) in which he lost one by scary stoppage and another in a one sided drubbing. Fought off a takedown attempt from Moreira and turned it into a series of power punches that hurt and dropped Moreira.

Ricardo Ramos takes a UD over Journey Newson

What a wacky finish. After throwing 4 or 5 spinning back elbows throughout the fight, Ramos finally cracks Newson with one that drops him. Newson, obviously rocked, manages to get back to his feet. He throws a leg kick to Ramos’ lead left calf and lands. Ramos immediately starts hopping around. Newson, still too rocked to do anything, just kind of stares at Ramos as the round runs out.

Fun fight all around. Impressive debut for Newson, especially on short notice.

Jared Gordon takes UD over Dan Moret

First decision of the night from Minneapolis in a fun scrap. Gordon was the more technically sound and more powerful of the two. Moret had the more memorable big moments but they just weren’t enough to overcome Gordon’s overall better grappling game.

Gordon asks the crowd who shot up before coming to the card tonight and you hear that one dude up in the bleachers let out a whoo

Drew Dober knocks out Marco Polo Reyes in the 1st!

I looked away for a few seconds and the fight is over. Dober bombs on Reyes, catching him over and over with the left hand until he goes down.

Dalcha Lungiambula stops Dequan Townsend in the 3rd round

Lungiambula stops Townsend in the 3rd off the back of a big left hand that put Townsend down. The first two rounds consisted of a lot of Lungiambula getting takedowns and holding top position. They were some big impressive takedowns but there wasn’t much grappling or ground n pound behind them. He comes out in the 3rd and blitzes Townsend, gets the mount and drops elbows until the ref stopped the fight. Impressive win for Lungiambula who is one of like two EFC->UFC transplants to actually look good in his debut. Props. We may have a 205 division yet.

Amanda Ribas subs Emily Whitmire in the 2nd round.

Ribas finally makes her UFC debut after being suspended by USADA almost immediately after signing with the promotion. Was basically her fight from the get-go. Got to Ribas’ back and threatened for the RNC for most of the first round before Whitemire managed to turn and get on top in guard. Ribas comes out in the second and puts Whitmire on the fence. She’s able to dig the double unders to drag Whitmire to the ground. She gets to Whitmire’s back and gets the RNC. Some nice stuff from Ribas in her debut.

Maurice Greene stops Junior Albini in the 1st round!

Greene drops Albini several times en route to stopping Albini in the first round. The former kickboxer found success with the straight kicks to the body and was able to parlay that into landing that right hand. Dropped Albini on a jab and then dropped him twice with the right hand. Albini managed to scare off Greene with a flurry in the middle of the round but he just ate another big punch that put him down. Always happy to see a fellow yarn enthusiast do well.
