First Impression: A Bouquet for an Ugly Girl
Tumblr media
A Bouquet for an Ugly Girl is about Tabata Hana, a lonely and unpopular high school girl who fantasizes about being the heroine in a shoujo manga despite being a “ugly girl”. Every morning before classes start, she changes out the flowers in the classroom in order to avoid being seen by her fellow classmates. Thinking that she is alone, she pretends to be a heroine by putting flowers in her hair. But at that moment she is caught by Yousuke Ueno, the most popular and handsome guy in class. Begging him not to tell anyone, he cheerfully promises that it’s “our” secret. Will Tabata finally get her chance to be the heroine in her own shoujo romance?
I noticed a lot of comments saying that A Bouquet for an Ugly Girl is reminiscent of Kimi ni Todoke and I can see why. Both of the main female characters are considered social outcasts and have fairly low self-esteem. They also both get involved with the most popular boy in their class. In other words, both of these series are a classic example of plain unpopular girl x handsome popular boy trope.
In the case of A Bouquet for an Ugly Girl, Tabata is severely self-conscious as well as super self-deprecating. While this can be a touch annoying at times, I’m sure a lot of people have found themselves in her shoes at some point in their life. It’s easy to overthink things and imagine the worst (even if it’s far from the reality of the situation). Hopefully, Tabata will gain more confidence in herself, with or without the help of Ueno (who is a fine enough male lead in his own right, despite being a bit dense).
While I look forward to seeing how things will develop between Tabata and Ueno, I’m more interested in how the dynamic between Tabata and Uguisudani (the “love rival”) will evolve over time, though the outcome is fairly predictable. But despite the predictability of their relationship and of this series in general, if you are fan of Kimi ni Todoke or just of this particular genre, then it might be worth checking out A Bouquet for an Ugly Girl.
Thank you for taking the time to read this review! I hope you will check out Alice in Mangaland for more manga reviews in the future! Arigato gozaimasu! Thank you!
