Spirit Temple - Kyoto, Japan
📸 Bob Gruen
“I was the official photographer on their tour of Japan. It was like KISSmania. The idea of their act has a lot of influence from the Japanese Kabuki in Japanese Theater. I felt like a general in the KISS Army when we were in Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan. The first place KISS went to was a giant Buddha, which I didn’t know was a very sacred shine to the dead. I was in the cab and the bus with KISS was following the cab. I was showing the Polaroids to the cab driver and he would start driving and the bus would follow and we would go to that place. As we were coming up the hill to the shrine, I saw Mr. Udo {Tour Promoter} hustling down the hill. I didn’t know that he had tried to tell the monks who ran the place that we were coming. They objected strenuously. And rather than deal with a fight, he just kind of split. I didn’t have any idea what was up so we all just showed up and KISS started piling off the bus. I start telling them to get in front of the statue like it’s a state park or something. There was some kind of discussion going on in the corner with the Japanese talking to the translators. I said to the translators, "Just keep them busy for a few minutes.” I set the band up, we took a bunch of pictures. A bunch of kids ran over and got in the pictures. Then we figured out we were being thrown out and we left. So I showed the cab driver the next picture and everyone got back in the bus and followed the cab to the next shrine. All the people who had been at the shrine were so freaked out that KISS were there that they followed us the next place. So we had these huge crowds following us. By the time we left there and went to the third place, the Golden Pagoda, we had a huge line of thirty or forty cars following the KISS bus. So it was this giant parade through Kyoto. After the third place, it was such a big mob we had to beat it back to the hotel!“ - Bob Gruen

Another dream come true to finally go here and see this amazing view.
Udo Jingu is a 1.5 hr bus ride from Miyazaki Station. The bus ride is covered when you avail the Miyazaki Bus Pass. It was a long winding road on the way, but I thought the views were stunning so it was all good!
At the shrine, there is kind of an “activity” where you throw 5 clay pebbles and if it lands in the rope circle, you will have good luck. Guess what, my first try, it landed straight in. No documentation but an ojiisan was my witness and we were both amazed! Anyway, my only wishes then was to be able to not miss my bus back to the city (it was an infrequent bus, and I have some tendencies to miss scheduled buses due to whatever reasons huhu) and for a safe flight home in a few days (the weather was really bad then and flights are getting cancelled). Be it due to my good luck from throwing the pebble into the rope circle or whatever, all my wishes then came true. It felt great.

About last weekend
⚠️ Warning: This going to be a long one
Cold. It was first and foremost very cold.
But very, very pretty, because it snowed (and I’m proud to say that I did not slip on the ice that covered the side walks. I did expect to go home covered in bruises.)
besides that, the travel to Munich was… chaotic to say the least. Most trains did not arrive (or leave) on time, that is, if they showed up at all. And even then… my train from Frankfurt did show up, but we were only allowed onto half of the train. Obviously this meant that there wasn’t enough space for everyone and the train was then cancelled. Sooo, I had to take the next one, which was late and very, very crowded, but at least had heating, which is all I wished for at that point because I had been standing in the cold for about 3 hours. By the time I was warm again, I had to get off the train to take a different one that would actually take me to Munich. On said train I encountered several people who reminded me, that I could be very grateful that while I might be cold, at least I was on the right train. One guy had started his day in Tel Aviv, where his flight was delayed, and he missed his train in Germany. Another one had wanted to go to Mönchengladbach but somehow only realized he was on the wrong train shortly before we reached Nürnberg. And the third was a kid that took the wrong train after school and somehow ended up in Bavaria instead of North Rhine-Westphalia, where he lives. It was wild.  2/10
Somehow, I still made it to Munich in time to go to the theatre and watch a performance of Dickens’ Christmas Carol at the Amerikahaus. It was amazing. Very funny and entertaining, while also being heartbreaking at times. 10/10.
Cue to us, (@str4wanzerin) and me, walking back to her place to meet up with @eolewyn1010 to grab something to eat. Very tasty 9/10
Saturday started off great! We went vinyl shopping. Or I shopped for vinyls and my friends accompanied me (thanks for all the patience, while I was looking at… everything). I ended up with one vinyl I had been looking for, and one that I did not expect to buy, but was played in the shop and my brain told me: This one. I want this one. (Amazing decision, I had a nice chat with the owner of the shop and have been listening to it on repeat the past few days) 12/10
Next, we visited the Christmas market (very pretty) and got some crêpes (very tasty) 9/10
Finally, we wound up at the Prinzregententheater, where we met @carlomenzinger and of course watched our amazing boys, Udo and Miro, perform “A Christmas Carol”. Which… mind blown. Miro definitely surprised me with how well he read and performed his part (who knew he could still dance and jump like that? Also, he was very cute overall), and Udo managed to exceed my already high expectations. Him reading Jacob Marley very nearly gave me a heart attack (how deep can he make his voice sound??), while I’m pretty sure that his performance of Scrooge's little sister gave me some type of diabetes.  1000/10
Had some nice food again and talked all kinds of crazy fandom stuff 10/10
Stood in the cold for a bit, but met Miro, who despite having a cab waiting for him and being tired from performing, signed all of our stuff and was so, so nice. He’s just as sweet in person, as he seems to be in interviews. Did not meet Udo, but there will be other opportunities, I’m sure. 100/10
On Sunday, @str4wanzerin and I had a nice walk in the snow, looked at some architecture and went to another Christmas market (which lead to a new fanfic idea being born) before I headed home. Miraculously, everything went fine on my way back. No delays, no nothing.
Oh, and my collection of things expanded a bit (thanks for the cup, the autographs, and the vinyls!). Behold my Tatort shrine:

By • Olalekan Fagbade Four IPOB/ESN camps cleared by Nigerian Troops, recover fresh, old human corpses Troops of the Joint Task Force, South-East, code-named Operation UDO KA II, has cleared four notorious camps of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliates, Eastern Security Network (ESN), in Imo State. The troops, in the course of the clearance, neutralised two IPOB/ESN members and four of the criminals were arrested. This is contained in a statement issued on Monday in Enugu by Lt.-Col. Jonah Unuakhalu, acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division, Nigerian Army, for the Joint Task Force Operation UDO KA II. Unuakhalu said that the camps cleared are located in three communities – Ihube, Aku and Umulolo – in Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State. He said that the clearance and recovery was carried out on Sunday, Oct. 1, 2023. The army spokesman said that during the clearance operation, troops encountered many Improvised Explosive Device (IEDs) deployed enroute to the camps. According to him, however, due to superior firepower, the irredentist group members fled into neighbouring forests with gunshot wounds. “It was discovered that the camps were being used to perpetuate atrocities such as cannibalism, occultic practices and ritual killings to instill fears into law-abiding citizens. “These were evident from many fresh and old corpses discovered while clearing the entire camps. “Also, the houses of the two spiritual leaders and herbalists that took to their heels were destroyed. “Furthermore, the shrine of the wanted terrorist, Amobi Chinoso Okafor, alias Temple, where human sacrifices are being made was destroyed,” he said. Unuakhalu said that the items recovered from the camps included different denomination of the Biafra currencies, one new power bike, four motorcycles and solar panels. Others items recovered are POP cements and a petroleum tanker suspected to have been hijacked from hard working Igbo owners (indigenes) trying to make a living. “Operation UDO KA II will continue combating crime and criminality in accordance with the extant rules and regulations guiding its operations. “All law-abiding and good citizens of the South-East are enjoined to act against these devilish terrorists by providing timely, credible and reliable information which will lead to ending the menace of insecurity occasioned by activities of the terrorist group in the region. “Do not be a victim of this sacrilegious. These criminals are desecrating Igboland,” he said. (NAN) #4IPOBESNCampsclearedbyTroopsfresholdcorpsesrecovered

Finding a Diamond on a Muddy Road
zen koan
udo was the emperor's teacher of his time. Nevertheless, he used to travel alone as a wandering mendicant. Once when he was on his way to Edo, the cultural and political center of the shogunate, he approached a little village named Takenaka. It was evening and a heavy rain was falling. Gudo was thoroughly wet. His straw sandals were in pieces. At a farmhouse near the village he noticed four or five pairs of sandals in the window and decided to buy some dry ones.
The woman who offered him the sandals, seeing how wet he was, invited him in to remain for the night in her home. Gudo accepted, thanking her. He entered and recited a sutra before the family shrine. He was then introduced to the women's mother, and to her children. Observing that the entire family was depressed, Gudo asked what was wrong.
"My husband is a gambler and a drunkard," the housewife told him. "When he happens to win he drinks and becomes abusive. When he loses he borrows money from others. Sometimes when he becomes thoroughly drunk he does not come home at all. What can I do?"
"I will help him," said Gudo. "Here is some money. Get me a gallon of fine wine and something good to eat. Then you may retire. I will meditate before the shrine."
When the man of the house returned about midnight, quite drunk, he bellowed: "Hey, wife, I am home. Have you something for me to eat?"
"I have something for you," said Gudo. "I happened to be caught in the rain and your wife kindly asked me to remain here for the night. In return I have bought some wine and fish, so you might as well have them."
The man was delighted. He drank the wine at once and laid himself down on the floor. Gudo sat in meditation beside him.
In the morning when the husband awoke he had forgotten about the previous night. "Who are you? Where do you come from?" he asked Gudo, who was still meditating.
"I am Gudo of Kyoto and I am going on to Edo," replied the Zen master.
The man was utterly ashamed. He apologized profusely to the teacher of his emperor.
Gudo smiled. "Everything in this life is impermanent," he explained. "Life is very brief. If you keep on gambling and drinking, you will have no time left to accomplish anything else, and you will cause your family to suffer too."
The perception of the husband awoke as if from a dream. "You are right," he declared. "How can I ever repay you for this wonderful teaching! Let me see you off and carry your things a little way."
"If you wish," assented Gudo.
The two started out. After they had gone three miles Gudo told him to return. "Just another five miles," he begged Gudo. They continued on.
"You may return now," suggested Gudo.
"After another ten miles," the man replied.
"Return now," said Gudo, when the ten miles had been passed.
"I am going to follow you all the rest of my life," declared the man.
Modern Zen teachings in Japan spring from the lineage of a famous master who was the successor of Gudo. His name was Mu-nan, the man who never turned back

1. Kawaguchi Asama Shrine – Yamanashi
Tumblr media
After a 10-day long devastating eruption of Mount Fuji in 864, Kawaguchi Asama Shinto Shrine was built the following year to worship the goddess of Mount Fuji, Asama no Okami (浅間大神).
Every year, on 25th April and 28th July, the traditional chigo no mai (稚児の舞; children’s dance) is performed to appease the god. Children aged 11 to 12 years old, typically girls, dance in front of the shrine to the tune of flutes.
2. Shirahige Shrine – Shiga
Tumblr media
Situated in Lake Biwa, the largest freshwater lake in Japan. Shirahige Shrine is dedicated to Sarutahiko of Mikoto, the god of longevity.
After sunset, the torii gate is lit up for 2 hours on weekends and even longer on special days such as New Year’s Eve.
3. Futami Okitama Shrine – Ise
Tumblr media
Popular among newlyweds and couples, Futami Okitama Shrine is the place to be for those seeking blessings in their love life and marriage.
The Meoto Iwa (夫婦岩), or “wedded rocks” are inseparable pair of rocks – the big one representing the husband and the small one the wife – are connected by a shimenawa (sacred rice straw rope).
4. Motonosumi Shrine – Yamaguchi
Tumblr media
Legend has it that in 1955, the spirit of a white fox instructed a local to build a shrine. Obliging the deity’s request, the man built and lined 123 red torii gates along the edge of a cliff.
Today, the shrine attracts visitors who are hoping to pray for wealth, studies, pregnancy, and even fishing.
5. Takaya Shrine – Kagawa
Tumblr media
Dubbed the “torii in the sky”, Takaya Shrine in Kagawa Prefecture sits atop the 404m-tall Mount Inazumi. The torii gate of the main shrine overlooks a panoramic view of the city of Kanonji and Seto Inland Sea.
6. Sakurai Futamigaura – Fukuoka
Tumblr media
While the Meoto Iwa in Ise is better known for its sunrise views, travellers flock to Sakurai Futamigaura in Fukuoka to watch the sun set.
Every May, a ceremony is held during low tide to change the shimenawa. As the rope measures over 30m in length – almost half the width of a football field – and weighs over 900kg, as many as 50 people are mobilized for the switch.
7. Udo Shrine – Miyazaki
Tumblr media
The cliffside Udo Shrine is perched on the rocky Nichinan Coast, south of Miyazaki City, surrounded by magnificent waves.
Legend has it that Toyotama-hime, a goddess of the dragons and sea, went into labour on land. A maternity hall was built in a hurry, in a sacred cave, and Toyotama-hime gave birth to Ugayafukiaezu no Mikoto, who was later enshrined as a deity.
Today, the birthplace is better known as the main shrine of Udo Shrine. Thanks to its history, a visit to the shrine is considered to be beneficial for couples trying to conceive, and expecting mothers praying for a safe pregnancy.
8. Amano Iwato Shrine – Miyazaki
Tumblr media
According to Japanese mythology, the sun goddess Amaterasu hid in this cave after a destructive battle with her brother. Refusing to come out of the cave, her isolation cast darkness over the world. It was only when the other gods and goddesses came together to devise a plan that Amaterasu was lured out, returning light to the world.
The period between November to February is the prime time to visit as that’s when the annual Takachiho Kagura – a shinto ritual consisting of festive folk dances – is held. The main event is held on 22nd and 23rd November, but the dances are performed every night between November and February.
9. Kuratake Shrine – Kumamoto
Tumblr media
The remote shrine was built to protect the sea and to pray for the safety of fishermen. For that reason, you’ll find a ship-shaped vessel filled with empty shells of mina, a shellfish native to the sea of Amakusa, in front of the shrine.
Due to a flood in 1972, the mountain trail was closed to the public and only reopened in 2012. As a result, the shrine completely went under the radar, privy to only the most savvy of locals and budding photographers.
10. Naminoue Shrine – Naha
Tumblr media
As the most prestigious shrine in Okinawa, Naminoue Shrine is widely revered as one of the 8 special Ryukyu shrines since the Ryukyu Kingdom era.
Affectionately nicknamed “Nanmin-san” by Okinawan natives, Naminoue Shrine is a power spot that can grant blessings for everything, from matchmaking to pest control. The date of the shrine’s founding is unknown, but it is believed that the roots can be traced back to when locals prayed to Nirai Kanai (ニライカナイ) – god’s world in the distance of the sea – for abundant harvests.

(Post Part 27)
Udo Shrine is a real shrine in modern-day Nichinan. Nichinan's only been around since the Meiji Restoration, so in the mid-1800s, the area would've likely been referred to as the greater Hyuuga province. Travel was also heavily restricted by the Edo government (Sakamoto Ryouma, the person Tatsuma is based off of, ran into so many issues with that policy.), but with the proper authorization, travel was possible.

MORE marley kids headcanons because i miss them
Goddamn Ophi how much u finna write about them 💀
Tumblr media
They are so chaotic my God
Falco is the “parent” of the group
Whenever someone (Gabi) does something stupid and ends up getting hurt he acts like it a catastrophic event
She’ll get a paper cut and hes like “OH MY GOD GABI HOW COULD YOU LET THIS HAPPEN?”
Gabi Zofia and Falco once tried to convince Udo to say one swear word
They tried to pay him 50$ to say damn and he WOULDN’T
Until one day his favorite minecraft world got deleted and he just yelled “M O T H E E R F U C K E R”
Only Falco was there and NO ONE believed it happened
Zofia is the strongest out of all of them
So one time the four of them were all able to balance on a bike and zofia was able to pull it no prob
Udo just LOOKS like he has chronic stomach pain
Gabi is lactose intolerant but she will eat an entire pint of ice cream, three boxes of mac and cheese and wash it down with some milk
With NO regrets
Their not allowed to hang out at Zofia’s house anymore
Because one of them Gabi broke a really expensive vase kiss kiss fall in love
Falco is under no circumstances allowed to pair his phone to Gabi’s bluetooth speaker because of his wildly unpredictable music taste
The LAST thing Gabi wants is for him to start blasting Freak by Doja Cat on full volume within earshot of her mom
Because he has no idea what those types of songs even mean hes just sitting there listening like 😀 while everyone is scrambling to turn it off
Zofia is a really devoted dancer so she travels a lot for dance competitions
So she leaves her beloved betta fish in Udo’s hands everytime she leaves because he ACTUALLY knows how to take care of it
Zofia doesn’t let ANYONE go through her sketchbook
So one time when she was at a dance competiton Gabi stole it and looked through it
It was full of charcoal sketches of fairies that she was too embarrassed to show anyone
Halloween is their TIME
They stock up on snacks, go trick or treating and have a big slumber party!
Which always involves them watching a scary movie and having to turn it off when they get too scared LOL
THEY TP REINER’S HOUSE
EVERY YEAR WITHOUT FAIL AND HE KNOWS ITS THEM
Sleepovers are a common thing between them
Theyre always at Udo’s house cuz he has “the cool mom”
But that comes with its own stress...
*CRASH* “Sorry Mom, Falco fell out the window” “HUH?” “Hes okay though! I think!”
There went the beautiful hydrangeas you spent so long planting
They will be up intil 4 am making tik toks
Like ive mentioned before, Udo is like the clingiest kid ever
So a few times a week he’ll come into your room at some ungodly hour of the night like
“Mom I had a bad dream can i sleep in here?”
If you tell him no he will either sleep on the floor or just come back later and not ask💀
So you just wake up with a child in your bed and it scares the shit out of u every time
You would think that when his friends spent the night this would stop that from happening but NOPE
He would go into your room under the guise of saying goodnight then have the audacity to fall asleep until you wake him up and send him back out w his friends 💀
Falco is the ultimate drama king
He def follows Colt around when he gets bored
“Falco can you leave me alone for five minutes?” “OH JUST BECAUSE YOU’RE 18 NOW MEANS YOU’RE TOO COOL TO HANG OUT WITH ME?”
Harassing Reiner is their favorite thing to do in their spare time
They’re still kids so its just absolute headassery
They still ding dong ditch his ass 💀
BUT HE HAS A RING DOORBELL SO HE CAN SEE THAT ITS THEM
He thinks its wildly irritating but also thinks its funny because it reminds him of his childhood
But you get a lot of calls from him like “YO COME GET YO DAMN KIDS”
So you have to shoot them a text like “Gabi please stop harassing your uncle”
He doesn’t understand why hes the butt of the jokes, he never gives the reaction they want
Zofia is a secret anime fan
When shes asked about it shes like “yeah i watch it occassionally” but has a Killua shrine in her closet 💀
She also has a secret instagram with like 20k followers that she posts aesthetic pics on
*****
