The Shiv Sena has an unbreakable relationship with the city and is well aware of the challenges faced on a daily basis by ordinary Mumbai citizens, always stepping in to help when necessary, the speaker claimed. Thackeray urged his former ally, the BJP, to explain what it had contributed to building the metropolis in addition to dubbing the city "a piece of real estate." The Shiv Sena has controlled the Mumbai civic authority for around 30 years. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is now run by an administrator while elections for the civic body's five-year term are taking place. Despite being allies in the Devendra Fadnavis-led government at the time, the Shiv Sena and the BJP campaigned against one another in the BMC elections in 2017. The BJP significantly increased its representation in the BMC by winning 82 of the 227 seats up for grabs, and is now only two seats behind the Sena, which won 84.
