Las Ruas do Brasil
For this weeks blog post, I reached out to my best friend Sidney who's currently studying abroad in Brazil to ask her a few questions about the culture and lifestyle in Rio and Brazil at large! Check it out below:
E: So to start, how long have you been living in Brazil?
S: At this point, Ive been here almost a year. I started in Rio, and then in the summer time I traveled to various countries in South America and within Brazil including Sao Paulo, Salvador, Recife, and a couple others, right now Im currently back in Rio attending my university.
E: How exciting!! What has been your favorite city in Brazil so far, and why?
S: As of right now, definitely Sao Paulo. Easily because the culture and diversity there is so prevalent. I love how grungy the city is, and it felt so crazy physically being there and actually seeing with my eyes the largest city in Latin America, especially when admiring it in comparison to cities in the USA like New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. It really was just such a surreal experience. Not to mention, many people often ask me if kids or young people in Brazil are anything like the ones in America (i.e hipsters, preppy kids and so on) and I usually wouldn't say yes because the kids in Rio are all very..... preppy??? But when I visited Sao Paulo it was so crazy the different kinds of young people there, there was literally just everything you could imagine as far as people, culture, groups etc
E: Wow thats crazy! Do you have any trouble communicating in Brazil?
S: I speak Spanish, so honestly not as much as I had initially expected. I think it definitely depends on the person though because my sister did the Brazil study abroad and obviously has the same background as myself and she didn't learn a lick of Portuguese. I also have a boyfriend here so that has helped with my communication efforts here, and he teaches me a lot.
E: How cute :’)! Okay, so to wrap this up, would you say that this experience is one worth recommending to people considering traveling abroad?
S: Most definitely, i love it here and i honestly don't even want to go back home but I sadly don't have a choice since i graduate in June. I will definitely be back though!
E: Awesome, thank you so much Syd for sharing!
S: No problem!
Note: pictured abroad is Sao Paulo, Brazil!
