okay wait i lied i have more to say

i’ve been thinking a lot about jade lately and how much i hate her arc in post canon esp wrt her relationship with dave. the whole bit abt her inserting herself into karkat and dave’s relationship feels more like a dunk on the jade/dave/karkat shippers of 2016 than like….a coherent character decision? actually quite a bit of the epilogues feel like they’re intended to Epically Own the fandom so obv that is influencing that opinion I have

anyway i am actually a davejade liker and davejade used to catch a lot of flack back in the day for being a Boring Hetero Entry Level Ship but it’s actually….so great. the panels where she’s grimbark and he’s whining to her r so funny and charming like i love their disaster teen romance sm. davejade is good because they’re NOT soulmates in the traditional sense. they shouldn’t get married but they love each other anyways

there’s this conversation dave has w terezi after bro dies where he claims that john doesn’t get angry, rose is too machiavellian, and that jade needs protecting (v v loose summary) and it’s a great moment for him because he’s proven wrong on literally every single one of those fronts, and it goes to show how little he actually understands his friends.

in a similar vein when davesprite breaks up with jade he acts as if he’s doing her a favor. then game over dave spends quite a bit of time arguing with her and being a total ass, but ultimately dies attempting to protect her. it’s such a juicy dynamic! the best part about davejade is that dave actually doesn’t understand her at all! he is the one forcing his protective heteronormative bullshit onto her, and not the other way around like the candy arc would have you believe. she needed a You Don’t Need Him moment way more than terezi did imo :(

the epilogue completely shits on all of this . like what happened to the girl who supported herself on an island for 9 years and taxidermied her own grandpa and plays the bass guitar…i miss her.

oh my god okay last thought on homestuck and then I’ll move on I PROMISE

smth i forgot about was how fucking ANNOYING the previous creative team was. so utterly convinced that this was what Real Art was, and if you didn’t like it then you just didn’t get it

the whole meat/candy exploration of canonicity is just not that profound! I was perfectly capable of “getting” it, it’s just not very interesting and i don’t think it’s particularly original either! meta narratives are really not that unique to homestuck!

i have a ton of criticisms of the epilogues (they’re preachy and whitewashed, they’re overly grim and tonally unpleasant, they’re a complete disservice to the prospit kids) but at least they’re like…reasonably well written? the prose is passable at least. hs2 is like….fucking BORING. meandering in all the worst ways. homestuck proper was meandering too, but at least it was entertaining!

anyways glad hsbc is in new hands unfortunately i think I prob still won’t like it but i hope i can remember homestuck without getting pissed off and sad one day
