Summer days pass me by - T. Jost
“I feel like I’m stuck, doing the same thing over and over with the same nothing at the end. I need to do something new. Wanna help me make this the best summer ever?”
“You do know that sounds like the start of a coming of age film, right?”
Summary: Mollie Thomas has been friends with Tyson Jost since they were children – but this summer by the lake could change everything.
Warnings: childhood friends to lovers, some bad language, a little angst
Word Count: 9.5k
A/N: I love Tyson Jost so much – this is a super indulgent fic that I started back in August 2020, and it’s been one hell of a journey writing it, including a complete rewrite about 2/3 through. This OC was actually the first one I ever attempted on hockeyblr, although I’ve since written a fair few in stories I've since posted over the years, and she holds a special place in my heart.
This Tyson blurb I wrote in July 2022 is what inspired me to rewrite this story (and thank you @bqstqnbruin for all the encouragement to finish it!).
~
If there was one thing about summer that Mollie Thomas loved the most, it was being by the lake. As soon as the weather was good enough, she would head up there with friends to relax, have barbecues and mess around on the water. Being by the lake simply was the epitome of summer, sunshine and friendship – she’d grown up doing it, her parents trusting her to go alone since the age of 15, and now 10 years later (despite some friends moving away), she still loved nothing more than watching the days roll on by from the lakeshore.
Utter bliss.
Mollie had been teaching history at the local Kelowna high school ever since graduating from the local college three years ago, and when the weather started getting consistently sunny, she even went up to the lake some evenings after work, depending on who was around. But now that the end of the school year was approaching, she would no longer be restricted to the occasional evening after work, and she honestly couldn’t wait.
Why? Because soon one of her best friends would be coming back to Kelowna for the summer. Tyson Jost.
Mollie had known Tyson ever since he’d moved to Kelowna to live with his grandparents when he was 13, his family's house being down the road from Mollie’s family. Her older brother John had been on the same hockey team as Tyson, so he’d always been around – but with John being a couple of years older than them, Tyson and Mollie had become fast friends.
Sure, things had become harder when Tyson had gotten more serious with ice hockey. When Mollie’s brother John had quit playing, choosing to focus on school instead, Mollie had been worried that they wouldn’t want to hang out any more – but that wasn’t the case. Hockey or no hockey, Tyson had always been there for her, and she knew she could count on him for anything.
He was the guy that encouraged her to get out of her comfort zone. He was the guy that turned to her for help asking out his first girlfriend Sarah Cooper. He was the guy that punched her first boyfriend for kissing Jenny Prince behind her back. He was the guy that made her laugh down the phone when college had been stressful. He was the only guy that she would wear another team’s colours for whenever he played against the Canucks. He was the guy that called her with a broken heart when the Avs had traded him. He was the guy that she looked forward to seeing most every summer, and she couldn’t wait to see him this year.
She missed him – who could blame her?
It was a Sunday afternoon, just about to head into the last week of the school year, and Mollie was soaking up the sun by the lake with some of her best friends; Bryony, Louis, Michael, Chase and Allison. There had been other people hanging out with them in the morning, including Mollie’s brother John and his wife Michelle, but the remaining six were the tightest group. So tight, that they’d all chipped in to rent a cottage together this summer, Allison’s uncle owning a couple in the area and offering them first dibs. Naturally, they’d all sprung at the chance of having a summer home base, even if not all of them were there all the time, so Mollie had that to look forward to starting next weekend, the moment that the school year ended. Bryony, Louis and Michael were also teachers, although across various different schools to Mollie, so at least she wouldn’t be the only one up at the cottage during the weekdays.
“Anyone for a refill?”
Mollie turned her head to the camping chair next to her, watching Bryony stand up and wiggle her empty can in the air. Mollie nodded, smiling at her friend, and a few others nodded too. As soon as Bryony walked away, Allison plunked down in the vacated seat, turning to Mollie with a grin.
Allison was probably Mollie’s closest girlfriend in Kelowna – also living on the same street as Mollie’s family – and while the two of them couldn’t have looked more different (Allison a curvaceous insta-airbushed blonde compared to Mollie’s chestnut hair and tomboy runner’s body), Allison had encouraged Mollie to be as confident and friendly as her, and Mollie was forever grateful. Sure, Allison was an incorrigible flirt and flitted between jobs, and sure Mollie had her moments where her anxiety got the better of her – but Allison was as close a friend to her as Tyson was, and Mollie loved that.
Even when Allison’s grin spelled troublemaker, like it did right now as Allison got comfy in Bryony’s vacated chair.
“So you know how my Uncle’s got me helping out with administration for his holiday home rentals this summer, in exchange for us getting our cottage for a lower price?” Allison prompted.
Mollie raised an eyebrow at the glee in her friend’s voice. Whatever it was, clearly she was excited about it – and considering that the cottage had been a good deal, clearly this was good gossip.
“Yeah, I remember…why?” Mollie mused.
“Well, a couple of cottages on this side of the lake have been rented…one of them by someone you know very well…”
Mollie knew her friend meant well, but this cryptic stuff was not helping.
“Out with it, Ally,” Mollie said bluntly.
“Tyson rented the cottage closest to ours for two months,” Allison grinned.
What?
Holy shit.
Holy shit.
“He’s going to be here all summer?” Mollie asked, excited.
“Yep! As far as I’ve heard, Tyson’s got some buddies coming up to stay with him at various points, and probably his sister too. I don’t know when or for how long, but there’s definitely enough rooms for all of them in that cabin to be there together so it’s going to be so much fun!” Allison told her, “Now that I think about it, I probably wasn’t meant to tell you. Tyson was probably keeping it as a surprise. Oops.”
Mollie just giggled, too happy to care that Tyson hadn’t said anything to her about his plans. It had been too long since she’d seen her childhood friend – summers just weren’t enough time with him – and knowing that he was going to be around for two solid months just made her heart soar. This was everything.
“Oh man, this is going to be the best summer,” Mollie sighed happily.
“Maybe this summer you and Tyson will finally admit how much you love each other.”
Mollie rolled her eyes, shaking her head. For some reason, Allison (and the rest of their other friends) had it in their heads that her friendship with Tyson was more than platonic. Sometimes it got really annoying because honestly nothing had ever happened between them (not even a hint of an almost) but she tried not to let it bug her. She knew where she stood with Tyson – yeah, he was incredibly handsome, with a good heart and a wonderful smile, but she wouldn’t trade their friendship for anything. Ever.
“We’re just friends, Ally-cat,” Mollie sing-songed, rolling her eyes.
“We’ll see,” Allison sing-songed back.
Honestly. Troublemaker.
Mollie ignored her friend’s laughter as she pulled out her phone, opening up her text thread with Tyson.
From: Mollie
A little birdy tells me you’ve rented a cabin by the lake for the summer
Mollie barely had to wait a couple of minutes before her phone buzzed with a reply.
From: Tyson
I swear Ally can’t keep her mouth shut.
I was trying to surprise you!
Mollie giggled to herself, ignoring Allison’s wriggling eyebrows.
From: Mollie
Trust me, I’m surprised.
School finishes next week – I can’t wait to see you!
It really had been too long.
“Tell your future husband we miss him!” Allison crowed.
“Oh you’re texting Tyson? Say hi from me!” Chase grinned from across the chair circle.
Mollie stuck her tongue out at him as Allison cackled next to her. Her friends were such dicks sometimes.
From: Mollie
The gang say hi and that they all miss you
“Done, happy?” Mollie said dryly.
“Extremely,” Allison grinned, looking like the cat that ate the canary.
“I don’t know why I like you at all,” Mollie said bluntly, although her smile gave away her lie.
Allison just wriggled her eyebrows again, earning laughter from the whole group and another eye roll from Mollie.
From: Tyson
Hi back from me!
I miss them too
I miss you the most
Mollie’s eyes widened slightly, a light flush warming her cheeks. What? Why was she reacting like this? Tyson said that all the time. Kind of. No, stop it. Mollie swallowed heavily, keeping her eyes down to avoid a reaction from their friends.
From: Mollie
I miss you too
With that, Mollie shoved her phone back into her pocket, just in time for Bryony to arrive with a fresh round of beers, which Mollie was more than grateful for. What was that all about?
~
“I am so ready for a drink.”
“Make it two,” Mollie mused, grinning at Allison’s words.
“Make it three,” Chase laughed, “I can’t wait to cool off in the lake, it’s too damn hot today.”
That was an understatement. The temperature was sweltering and even just thinking about jumping into the cold water was almost too much to bear. Mollie been waiting all week for this Friday evening – while the four of them who were teachers had been up at the lake during the week every day since their schools finished for the summer a week ago, Allison and Chase had weekday 9-5s, so Mollie had volunteered to drive back into town to bring them out for the weekend, finally bringing their big friendship group together in their rented cabin for the summer. Of course Mollie had visited her family (with her brother John and his wife Michelle reminding her they wouldn’t be up at the lake until next week) to fill the time while she waited for Allison and Chase to be ready, as well as stocking up on supplies, but now Mollie was more than ready to kick back and relax.
After she’d been in the water, of course.
Thankfully Mollie had put a bikini on underneath her clothes, just a simple little red thing, before picking up her friends today, so as soon as she’d parked outside their cabin, brought the cooler of drinks and snacks into the kitchen, and dumped her duffel bag by the stairs, she stripped off her clothes as she walked towards the tempting water. Bryony wolf-whistled as Mollie walked past the three who were already there, and Mollie just flipped them all off with a grin, kicking off her shoes quickly before taking off in a run down the dock and diving into the water.
Bliss.
Allison and Chase, both having stripped down to their swimsuits too, wasted no time in joining Mollie in the water, and all Mollie could do was smile as she resurfaced. This was summer. All of them together in glorious weather at the most beautiful place in Kelowna. What more could she ever want?
“LOOK WHAT THE CAT DRAGGED IN!”
Mollie turned her head at Michael’s hollering, grinning at the sight of the familiar figure walked over from the neighbouring cabin. Tyson. Mollie eagerly hauled herself back up onto the dock, slipping back into her shoes and picking up a towel from the stack at the beginning of the dock to dry herself off with as she walked back to the cabins, waving hello as she got closer.
“There you are.”
Mollie just grinned and threw her arms around Tyson’s neck, him just laughing as he picked her up, swinging her round in a circle, not seeming to care that she was getting him wet.
“You’d think you were happy to see me or something,” Tyson teased, setting her back on her feet.
“Oh hush, you know I am,” Mollie sighed happily, running the towel over her wet hair, “Are you happy to be back here?”
“You know it,” he nodded, smiling sweetly at her, “even more so knowing that I’m nowhere near Buffalo and that you’re here.”
Well Mollie would never say no to a bit of Tyson charm.
“Flattery gets you everywhere, Mr Jost,” she mused, trying to calm her racing heart.
It wasn’t fair that nothing about him had changed at all and yet somehow his pretty curls and pretty face were even more handsome since she’d last seen him. So unfair.
“HEY LOVEBIRDS!”
A shout from Bryony broke Mollie out of her thoughts, and she saw Tyson blush fiercely as they both looked at the group by the chairs to see them all smirking at the two of them. And to think it was usually Allison who was the troublemaker. Mollie just flipped them all double birds, earning laughter.
“We’d better go before people start talking eh?” she laughed, trying to hide her blush.
“Let them talk,” Tyson grinned, but starting walking over to the ring of chairs anyway.
It wasn’t fair that her stomach filled with butterflies at the simple sight of his smile.
As Louis handed Mollie a cold white claw, Tyson already having one in hand, she took the empty seat at Tyson’s side. By the time that Allison and Chase hauled themselves out the water to join the group, they were all well on their way to catching up.
They talked about Bryony and Louis still being together, their relationship going on 5 years strong. They talked about Allison losing another job, her uncle having taken pity on her and letting her do his administration for the summer cabins he owned. They talked about the school year, how parents and kids were a stressful nightmare most days now. They talked about Tyson’s season, sort of, Tyson just saying that he was happy to be back up from the AHL. They talked about Tyson’s sister Kacey, how she was kicking ass and taking names. They talked about Chase’s hard-earned promotion at work, finally getting the recognition he deserved. They talked about all the plans they had for the next two months here at the lake and the more they talked and drank and laughed, Mollie just sank back in her chair, taking everything in, soaking everything up.
This really was heaven.
Tyson noticed her relax back in her chair and just smiled at her, earning a genuine smile back. Yeah this was going to be a summer to remember, she could feel it.
~
Another couple of days passed at the lake cabin, Chase and Allison heading back into town while Tyson stayed at his place, and Mollie couldn’t be happier. Happy enough to make breakfast pancakes and bacon for Bryony, Louis and Michael after she showered following her early run around the lake, leaving it all in the oven for them with a note while she cleared up. Breakfast she could handle – it was the little things. She knew her friends would appreciate it anyway.
As she was taking out the trash though, she spotted Tyson doing exactly the same from his cabin, and waved enthusiastically at him, grinning as he laughed. He was clearly still adjusting to waking up early, same as she was – he still looked a little bleary eyed as they walked towards the end of their driveways.
“Good morning Tys!” she said cheerfully.
“Morning!” he mused.
She jogged over to him, Tyson catching her in a hug as she reached his side, making her laugh and squeeze him back tightly. Mornings like this were exactly what she had missed while he was away. As she pulled away though, her phone buzzed with a series of texts, and she pulled out her phone only to frown at the sender. Her ex. Ew. He really wasn’t getting the hint.
“Who’s making your face do that?”
Mollie cursed under her breath and tucked her phone away with.
“It’s no-one,” she said simply, willing him to let it go.
“No-one doesn’t make you grimace like that,” Tyson pointed out, “And it doesn’t make you hide it from me. So who is it?”
She really couldn’t pretend around him, could she? And it wasn’t like he hadn’t heard about her terrible ex boyfriends before.
“It’s my ex. Justin. It’s been six months since I caught him texting other girls with all the things he wanted to do to them, and while I don’t know if he physically cheated, I still kicked him to the curb the moment I found out. Every now and again he blows up my phone, even though I never answer him,” Mollie explained, “His mom even knows and yells at him for bugging me. He’ll get bored soon enough.”
Yeah, this latest ex wasn’t exactly one of her finest choices.
The deep frown that shifted onto Tyson’ face was an interesting reaction though.
“If he doesn’t leave you alone, tell me. I still know enough people in this town, and I can hunt him down and punch him if he doesn’t back off.”
A rush of heat went through her veins at his words, a flush spreading across her cheeks.
There was a flashback in her mind to when they were 15, when Tyson found out that her first boyfriend Todd kissed Jenny Prince behind her back, and sucker-punched him at school in her honour. It was a beautiful memory. And to know that he’d still defend her like that?
“You always were my knight in shining armour,” Mollie teased.
But Tyson just shrugged. “You know I’ve got your back no matter what. That’s what best friends are for.”
Such a sweetheart.
Something about his tone though, how seriously he’d taken her words, made Mollie keep her eye on Tyson throughout the day, and by the time that late afternoon rolled around when their barbecue was in full swing, she finally cornered him again. There was just something in his eyes that looked…tense. It wasn’t the Tyson she knew and it worried her that even in the most relaxing place in Kelowna, he still looked so stressed.
“Hey, Tys, fresh beer?”
Tyson smiled his thanks, taking it with a nod. There was no one else standing too closely so she didn’t feel bad for confronting him like this, not at all.
“So are you going to tell me what’s going on with you?” she said softly.
Tyson’s eyes widened a little, before he huffed out a laugh.
“There’s no point hiding anything with you, is there?”
Just like her with him. But Mollie winced. “If there’s something you don’t actually want to talk about, then I’m not going to push. That’s the last thing I want.”
Tyson just nodded, taking a sip of his beer, as if to steel himself. Clearly this was more than passing worry. What was going on?
“Every summer I’ve ever had has been the same. Arrive back to Kelowna, get sympathy and pitying smiles for how shitty the season was, hanging about by the lake, train, start hockey again. I’m tired of it,” Tyson groaned.
“Tired of it?” she asked, confused, trying to understand what he meant.
Surely he didn’t mean he was tired of hockey? She knew how much the sport meant to him.
“I’m tired, Mollie. I feel like I’m stuck, doing the same thing over and over with the same nothing at the end. I need to do something new or I feel like I’m going to go crazy,” Tyson sighed.
Okay, okay that she could manage.
“It must be so frustrating, pouring your whole heart into the sport you love, and not getting the reward you deserve. And the fact that you still feel like this in the off season? That’s not good, Tys,” Mollie murmured, “What can I do to help?”
He sent her a sad smile.
“I’m not sure, really. If I don’t know what I can do, I don’t know what anyone else can do,” he said softly, “But being here with you right now, talking with you like this, I appreciate it. I don’t exactly trust many people with my full thoughts like this.”
That both saddened her and made her heart soar. The fact that he didn’t really have anyone else he could really talk to was devastating…but the fact that he trusted her enough? That was everything.
“Then we can talk and vent and rant and scream as much as you need. And we’ll build your happiness back up, just like you deserve. I’m here for you, Tyson,” she said firmly.
“Yeah?”
That smile would be the end of her, she just knew it.
“Yeah, I mean it,” she nodded, helpless to do anything but smile back.
“Wanna help me make this the best summer ever?” he grinned.
“You do know that sounds like the start of a coming of age film, right?” Mollie teased.
Tyson nudged her with his shoulder, earning a nudge back.
“Is that a yes?” he asked, hope filling his voice.
“Obviously,” she grinned.
How could she say no to him?
But as she looked into his eyes, there was something in his gaze that made her breath hitch in her chest, her grin sliding from her face. Tyson seemed to be caught in the moment too as his own face drifted into neutral, his eyes locked on hers in return. She didn’t realise how close they had shifted until her fingers brushed against his arm, Tyson’s eyes darting down to where they were touching before he looked back up at her. Her heart was pounding, ears full of a rushing sound, her thoughts filled with nothing but the dazed look on Tyson’s face.
It was when his gaze flicked down to her lips that she jolted out of her reverie, just in time for a couple of shrieks and splashes came from the end of the dock.
Fuck. Fuck.
What was that? What the hell was that?
“Mollie…” Tyson murmured, fingers brushing against hers finally.
“I’m going to get some more food,” she said quickly, stepping backwards.
It took all her strength to turn away from the confused hurt expression on Tyson’s face, and walk over to join Bryony and Louis at the barbecue, plastering a smile on her face as her head whirled, desperately trying not to panic. Tyson had almost kissed her. She had almost kissed Tyson. Tyson wanted to kiss her. She wanted to kiss Tyson. Did she want to kiss Tyson?
Of course she wanted to.
But since when did she give into fleeting desires around him? And since when did he ever look at her like that? No, she couldn’t deal with this. She wouldn’t, not tonight. Maybe not ever. What the hell, Tyson?
~
Tyson and Mollie didn’t talk about the moment they shared at all. The first two weeks of their two month summer, almost a full week since that fateful night, passed quickly and the longer they went not mentioning it, Mollie found herself burying the topic completely. From Wednesday morning to Friday midday, Mollie, Tyson, Bryony, Louis and Chase all quickly fell into a routine that she knew would carry on for the rest of the summer. Mollie did her usual run along the lake front each morning, with Bryony and Tyson joining her for a yoga session today, the Friday morning. She spent each day cycling through swimming, sunbathing, and reading, all of the group taking it in turns to cook dinner while sorting out their own lunches. She kayaked with Chase and Tyson for a couple of hours before lunch on Thursday, the three of them paddling in a comfortable silence most the way, taking pictures to make their friends jealous of the beautiful views.
And now Bryony and Louis were back from their grocery run for the barbecue tonight, to celebrate Mollie’s brother John and his wife Michelle coming up for the weekend, as well as Tyson’s friends Mat and Dante arriving ahead of their own week’s stay. They’d all met Mat and Dante before, the two of them joining Tyson for a few summer’s now (and Dante joining on his own the year before that started) so Mollie was well prepared for the chaos those two always seemed to bring. At least in comparison to the peace and calm that Tyson’s friend JT brought when he visited (which he would be doing for two weeks after Dante and Mat left).
It was going to be an interesting stretch of time, that was for sure.
After Tyson had gotten his friends settled in, they immediately joined Mollie’s group to chill on the clearing by the dock, relaxing for a few hours before they needed to start prepping for the barbecue tonight. Chase and Allison wouldn’t be joining them until later, and neither would John and Michelle, but that didn’t mean that they couldn’t have fun before then.
“We’ve got snacks and fresh fruit and cold beers, help yourselves,” Michael grinned, waving towards the coolers on the back decking of their cabin.
Mat, Dante, and Tyson saluted, making them all laugh, Tyson carrying over their own crate of beers to add to the coolers too. Mollie just stayed silent, offering Tyson a small smile, to which he sent a hesitant one back. Great. He was still going to be awkward around his friends too. With a quiet sigh, quiet enough that no-one else heard it, she laid back down on her deckchair, eager to let the sun wash away the underlying tension she was desperate to ignore.
Maybe with his friends here, Tyson would get over the awkwardness and they could return to normal. At least, she hoped they could. She didn’t know what she would do if they didn’t.
~
“So, Mollie looks good, huh?”
“Don’t even think about it Barzy,” Tyson scowled.
Dante and Mat looked at each other only briefly before bursting into laughter.
“We know she’s yours, Josty. Chill,” Dante snickered.
“She’s not mine,” Tyson shot back, narrowing his eyes.
His friends just laughed harder.
“Yeah okay, and you totally weren’t distracted when she was sunbathing in that tiny pink bikini this afternoon, right,” Mat teased.
“I swear, I will throw you in the lake.”
~
The weekend was…odd, to say the least. Mollie didn’t spend nearly as much time with Tyson as she normally did, mostly because he looked like he didn’t know what to say to her and she didn’t have a clue what to say to him. She got away with it though, having her brother and sister-in-law up at the cabin, and Tyson having his friends to distract him. She had to get over this weirdness. She needed to.
On the Sunday evening, when her brother John and Michelle drove back into town, she followed them back, staying at her apartment for a night ahead of a family dinner their mom had insisted on for the Monday night. It wasn’t a hardship to take a little break from the cabin, using the time to pamper herself with a long bath and a face mask, giving herself the time to refresh. And Monday she spent giving her apartment a giant deep clean, driving all thoughts from her mind until she only had enough time to shower and change before heading over to her parents house.
“Mollie! Baby! Are you eating enough?”
Mollie just rolled her eyes fondly at her mom’s greeting.
“Nice to see you too mom. I brought wine,” she mused, stepping into her childhood home.
“Ooh, I do love a good cabernet, thank you darling. John and Michelle are already here – they’re with your dad in the den,” her mom said cheerfully, “I’m just finishing up in here!”
“I’ll help you, mom. It’s been a while.”
Mollie’s mom just beamed at her, kissing her cheek before wandering back into the kitchen. She followed with a smile on her face, heart bursting with the love that only a mom could cause, her mom especially. Mollie put on the apron that her mom passed her, the two of them chopping vegetables for the salad in a comfortable silence, Mollie just enjoying her mom dancing along to the radio while they worked. True to her word, they didn’t take long to finish preparing everything, and in no time at all, her mom was calling everyone to the table for dinner.
Incredible chicken pot pie, with creamy mash, a variety of greens, and homemade gravy, with a fruit cobbler for dessert. This was exactly what she needed.
What she didn’t need was her brother opening his mouth the moment that they finished eating.
“So mom, has Mollie told you about Tyson yet?”
What the hell?
“No? Is everything okay?” her mom asked, voice full of concern as she turned to look at Mollie.
She kicked her brother under the table but he just smiled sweetly at her. Her older brother was such a child.
“He’s fine mom. A little stressed after the season, but fine,” Mollie said, as calmly as she could.
“I was talking about all the flirting actually,” John said innocently.
“Shut up, John! There hasn’t been any flirting!” she hissed.
He was a dead man. Michelle could move on happily.
“Flirting?” her dad frowned.
“Flirting?!” her mom cried happily.
For fuck’s sake. She needed to nip this in the bud before her mom pulled out her scrapbooks.
“There is no flirting. John is delusional, maybe a touch of heat stroke. You really check that out for him, Michelle,” Mollie said firmly, her sister-in-law just sending her a pitying smile, “Tyson and I don’t flirt with each other.”
“It’s been different this year and you know it,” John shot back.
Michelle elbowed him, but other than a grunt he didn’t react at all, his smirk staying put.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. He’s one of my best friends and you know it,” Mollie scowled.
“Me thinks the lady doth protest too much,” John sing-songed.
“Oh you assho-”
“That’s enough,” their mom interrupted, gaze firm. Mollie snapped her mouth shut, John doing the same. “Johnathan Neil Thomas, cut it out. If Mollie says they’re still just friends, then that’s that.”
Mollie smiled triumphantly, earning an eye roll from her brother.
“And Mollie Eliza Thomas, if there ever is a change between you and Tyson then you know you can be open with us.”
Ugh.
“Mom!” Mollie hissed.
John just threw his head back and cackled, not even flinching at the elbow from his wife this time. How was he 27 years old?
“Alright, alright, I’m stopping,” their mom grinned, “and so is John.”
Seriously. It was bad enough that her head was messed up from whatever the hell had happened at the lake the other day, whatever the hell had been happening since Tyson came back this summer, but she didn’t need her family adding to it too.
“Cheer up buttercup. Whatever happens, happens,” her dad shrugged, smiling.
Mollie didn’t know if that made things better or worse. Sure, John could be doing the opposite, getting defensive and shutting down a ‘potential’ relationship between her and Tyson (not that there was anything) but this wasn’t helping.
“I’m disowning you all,” Mollie grumbled, “not you Michelle. As always, you’re an angel.”
Her brother’s wife just beamed. “If John doesn’t want to sleep on the sofa tonight, he’ll stop.”
What an angel she was indeed.
Her dad tactfully changed the topic to his upcoming fly fishing trip, finally giving Mollie some peace, but she was lost in her head from there on out, Michelle just filling up her wine glass in solidarity. By the time John and Michelle went home, Mollie had drunk a couple of glasses too many to safely drive home, so she crashed in her childhood bedroom, her mom thrilled that she got to fuss over her for another day.
Her dad promised to make her a hearty breakfast.
While she got ready for bed, doing her usual skincare routine after she changed, Mollie finally let herself embrace her thoughts. As much as she didn’t want to admit it, John’s teasing had gotten under her skin.
It’s been different this year and you know it.
Because it had been different this year. This summer had been full of all of this tension that hadn’t been there before that she didn’t know what to do with. This was her and Tyson. If she couldn’t figure out what it all meant to her, then where did that leave them?
Oh.
Oh.
Oh no.
John was right. He’d been right all along. It was different this year. Everything with Tyson had felt different this year, the flirty teasing, the innocent touches, the way her heart had skipped at his smile. But why? What had changed?
And what could she do about it?
Tyson had never said anything to her about being more than friends in all of their years of knowing each other, not even as a joke in passing. There’d never been a moment like that almost moment before the barbecue the other day. There’d never been anything that had flared Mollie’s feelings into a tailspin like this, but now? Now she didn’t know what to think.
Breathe. Take a moment.
Mollie inhaled shakily, running her trembling hands through her chestnut hair. It was like a dam had burst, her emotions rushing over like a tidal wave, her heart racing and her breathing getting ragged. This had changed everything. How could she not think about Tyson differently now that the floodgates had opened? How could she ignore that he was her everything now that she’d admitted it to herself? What the hell was she supposed to do now?
“Mollie? Is everything alright?”
Mollie snapped out of her thoughts at the sound of her mom’s voice through the door, clearly having seen her light was still on. Damn it. Damn it damn it damn it.
“Yeah mom, just doing some yoga!” Mollie called back, hoping that the lie wasn’t too obvious, that her voice wasn’t too shaky.
“Alright sweetheart, get some rest! I’ll see you in the morning,”
Mollie just squeezed her eyes shut tightly, balling her fists at her sides as she curled up under her duvet. This wasn’t fair. All these years she’d maintained an amazing friendship with Tyson, a constant steadiness that she cherished, but now…could it really stay the same? Could she stay the same, knowing her feelings were actually real, when he didn’t feel the same? Could she pretend to be normal?
Could they even stay friends?
~
At the lake, unbeknown to Mollie, Tyson was going through his own emotional turmoil, sitting with Dante and Mat in the living area of his cabin.
“What’s going on with you and Mollie?”
“It feels different this year,” was all Tyson could offer to Dante’s question.
“Different…how?” Dante frowned.
Tyson sighed, running a hand over his face, missing the look that his friends exchanged.
“Tys, seriously. You and Mollie have always been so close, and yeah we tease you about it…but has something happened?” Mat said softly.
“I don’t know. There have been some moments. Like, emotionally-charged moments. That first weekend when we first saw each other again, she was wearing this tiny red bikini and she just looked so carefree and beautiful and so goddamn hot that it completely blew past all my defences. I couldn’t help but flirting and she flirted back. Talking to her felt like my heart was clenching and there was something in her eyes that said it wasn’t just me. And the other day at the barbecue, I just…I don’t know. We almost kissed and then she basically ran away,” Tyson said miserably.
Mat laughed softly, making Tyson whine in protest.
“This isn’t funny!”
“Oh it’s kinda funny. Why is it that everyone can see the connection between you two other than you?” Mat mused.
“We’re just friends. That’s all she wants, clearly,” Tyson sighed.
“That’s all she wants? Are you saying that you want more?” Dante asked, grinning.
Tyson just whined again at his friend’s excitement, dropping his head to rest in his hands. He couldn’t deny it, not any more. Not now that things felt so different, so…new. How could he?
“So you’re admitting that you like her. Finally. Are you sure that friendship is all Mollie wants? Have you even said anything?” Mat asked, raising his eyebrows.
“Why would I say anything?!” Tyson yelped, lifting his head up again.
Was Mat crazy?
Both Mat and Dante rolled their eyes. “You literally said that it wasn’t just you that had that emotionally charged moment,” Mat pointed out.
“I know but…”
“If there’s another moment like that, why don’t you just take a chance?” Dante interrupted, before Tyson could spiral into a panic, “if things are stressing you out this much, then maybe she’s feeling the same.”
Tyson bit his bottom lip, contemplating his friend’s words. Could he really do that?
Mat sighed, seeing Tyson’s hesitation. “Look, bud, you never know until you try. The friendship that you and Mollie have is so solid – even if things don’t happen between you two, nothing will change that.”
“I guess you’re right. She wouldn’t be weird about it, even if it is just me with feelings,” Tyson murmured.
Mat frowned, opening his mouth to argue, but Dante just elbowed him in the ribs, making him grunt.
“I don’t think it is just you, but yeah, you really should act on this, before you get too in your head about things. I know it’s scary and I know that you’ve got to take a risk, but I honestly think it’s going to pay off. It’s Mollie, Tys. How can things not?” Dante said warmly.
Mat nodded enthusiastically, making Tyson laugh softly.
“You really think I could take a chance?”
“Absolutely. You’re Tyson fucking Jost – you’ve got this!” Dante grinned.
Tyson smiled weakly, trying to put on a brave face. He wasn’t convinced, not with how much was on the line. Mollie was too important for him to lose. But maybe, just maybe, he could gain even more?
~
The week went on with Mollie no closer to an answer to what her next steps should be. At least Tyson was a little more relaxed around her, offering her genuine smiles rather than the awkward ones he’d been giving her since their almost moment. On Mat and Dante’s penultimate day, Allison arranged for a four jet skis to be sent up to the lake as a surprise, and they all took turns in racing each other on them, no-one getting too drunk to make sure they stayed safe.
After a few races on the jet ski, Mollie took a break, letting Louis take over to race Bryony, Mat and Dante, while Michael cheered them on and took photos. She could see her phone lighting up with jealous messages from Allison and Chase – FOMO was a bitch – so she could already predict that Allison would be extending their rental until after the full weekend had passed so she could have a go herself.
Mollie headed back out of the cabin with a book, a bottle of water, and some sunscreen, ready to relax for a little while now that she’d pulled some shorts back on, only to see Tyson already sitting where she had been planning to sit. Maybe it was fate. Maybe this was the time they needed, apart from the others. Maybe this was a sign.
Then again, Tyson had been fairly quiet today so far, letting Mat and Dante take the reins in conversation.
“Hey Tys. Mind if I join you?”
He jolted, looking up at her like she’d surprised him, making her frown slightly.
“Oh, uh, yeah. Sure.”
Okay, not quite the reaction she’d been expecting. Even for him, this was weird. Still, she sat down in the chair next to him, reapplying her sunscreen before opening up her book. But the way that Tyson was sitting silently next to her, just staring out at the lake, was unsettling.
“Is everything okay?” she murmured, putting her bookmark in her book.
“Yeah. I’m fine.”
His answer was so short, almost distant, unlike any way he’d ever spoken to her, and it hurt a little to hear that tone in his voice. Maybe she was just missing something, but him brushing her off like that on top of all of her emotional turmoil lately was just enough to make tears spring to her eyes.
It was all she could do to swallow heavily to keep her composure, and she stood up, dropping her book on her chair.
“Where are you going?” Tyson frowned.
“I don’t know. Just need to clear my head, I guess,” Mollie shrugged, attempting to keep her voice light.
“Can I come with you?” Tyson blurted.
That would be the opposite of helpful right now. But when he looked at her so hopefully, how could she say no? Maybe he’d actually open up, and his attitude was all a big misunderstanding? She could only hope. She couldn’t take him pulling away from her, if that’s what this was.
No, she had to have hope.
With a quick glance over her shoulder to check that their friends were all occupied, Mollie started to walk in the opposite direction down the lake front, knowing that Tyson would be following her. She wandered, a little aimlessly, trying to clear her head as she’d said to him, but nothing helped knowing that it was his footsteps following her.
Eventually she slowed to a stop at a little cove, ducking into it to get out of the harsh light of the sun, and Tyson stopped next to her, offering her a small smile. She had to return it – this was the place they’d dubbed ‘their spot’ after all. Back in Tyson’s first summer, she’d found him here after a difficult training session, full of frustration and homesickness, and it had been one of the things that bonded them so quickly. She’d never told anyone about this place, that it was hers and Tyson’s. Mollie hadn’t intended to come here, but clearly her subconscious had other plans.
Tyson took a step towards her, slipping slightly on a rock, and Mollie’s hands darted out to stead him, Tyson clinging to her forearms as he regained his balance. It was only when she laughed and looked back up at him that she realised they were standing so close that she could count his eyelashes, and she froze.
No, no she couldn’t do this. She needed less drama, less intensity, less…
“Mollie,” Tyson murmured, voice breathy.
“Tys, I…I can’t,” she choked.
Her head was swirling as she jerked out of his grip, trying not to slip herself as she stepped past him, but Tyson grabbed her hand to stop her leaving.
“Mollie, please don’t go! Just listen to me!” Tyson begged.
The desperation in his voice made her stop in her tracks. She closed her eyes, keeping her back to him as she tried to control her racing heartbeat, jumping slightly as his hand move to touch her shoulder. Against her better judgement, with a gentle squeeze of his hand, she turned back around to face him, biting her lip at the devastation in his face.
“Tys,” she whispered, a little helplessly.
He’d never looked at her like that before, like she had the power to destroy him completely. She wasn’t sure if she liked it.
“Mollie, sweetheart…”
Sweetheart. He trailed off at her whimper, running a shaky hand through his unruly curls before he looked into her eyes with such determination that butterflies erupted in her stomach.
“You’ve got to know how much I like you, Mollie. Seriously. You’re one of the only people I keep in touch with from home, one of the only true friends I can count on, and you know how much our friendship means to me. But you’ve got to know how our friendship has evolved. It’s…more now, right? You feel it too?”
Mollie’s breath caught in her throat. He…what?
How much I like you.
How much our friendship means to me.
Our friendship has evolved.
You feel it too?
“Please. Say something,” Tyson begged.
How could she deny him that? After everything she started admitting to herself? She closed her eyes, swallowing heavily, only opening them when her heart cracked open a little. If he could be honest, as much of a dream as it felt, then so could she.
“I do feel it, Tys. I just…I didn’t let myself hope that you felt the same,” she whispered.
There it was. She’d finally said the words out loud. Tyson let out a wounded noise, low and sad, but Mollie didn’t say anything. What else could she say without losing all composure?
“I’ve liked you for so long, Molls. I just never let myself act on it because I didn’t think you felt the same. But now…”
Tyson trailed off again into nothing, letting out a whoosh of breath. The hope and wonder in his voice sent a thrill through Mollie’s body, her heart beating a little bit faster. Tyson liked her. He really liked her! And she’d told him how she felt about him too? She’d never thought this moment would actually happen. Definitely not since her emotional realisation a few evenings ago. But now that it was? It felt mindblowing. Was this really happening?
But there was still that niggle of doubt she couldn’t deny. So Mollie gathered her thoughts while Tyson stayed silent, hoping they wouldn’t bite her in the ass.
“I can’t do this if it’s just for the summer,” Mollie blurted, “I can’t be only a fling for you, Tyson. I wouldn’t be able to cope with that. Not with you.”
Tyson quickly shook his head, reaching out to clasp both of her hands in his, making her gasp softly at the warmth in his grip.
“You could never be a fling. This is the real deal between us, Mollie. I know it is. You know it is,” Tyson said firmly.
Mollie just nodded, choking out a laugh, unable to stop the tears welling up in her eyes as she smiled at him, earning a hopeful smile back. He was right. Deep down, no matter how her insecurities whispered, she knew that their friendship meant a solid foundation. It wasn’t a temporary wavering summer-fun. It was…everything.
“So what are you saying?” Mollie murmured, trying to blink away the tears.
Was this really happening?
“Will you be my girl?” Tyson asked, his voice full of hope.
Mollie choked a laugh, her voice thick with the tears that wouldn’t leave. “Yeah, Tys. I’ll be your girl,”
Tyson let out a whoop, throwing his head back, making Mollie laugh again. What a ridiculous guy. She liked him so much. He rested his forehead against hers, one hand rising to cup her cheek, making her inhale sharply as his eyes went more serious.
“Can I kiss you now? Finally?”
Mollie tilted her head up to press her lips to his in answer.
~
Being with Tyson was easy, easier than Mollie could’ve ever imagined. Somehow that transition from friends to boyfriend and girlfriend was seamless, with not even a little awkwardness like she’d feared there would’ve been. She attributed that to Tyson mainly though – he was such a driving force of happiness, and now that she’d allowed herself to feel all those thoughts she’d subconsciously pushed down before, it was like everything had clicked into place. It was almost like it was fate.
Fate that she was seizing with both hands and never letting go.
The moment that they’d returned to the cabins from the cove, Dante had taken one look at them and demanded Mat to ‘pay up’. Bryony had immediately pulled out her phone, typing away furiously, until she groaned and admitted that Allison had won their pool. Tyson had just laughed when he realised that everyone had been betting on the two of them, Mollie hiding her face in his chest with a groan. Somehow she wasn’t surprised – it was their friends after all – but that didn’t make her feel any better in the moment.
Nor did John’s smug texts – Michelle’s happy ones soothed that a little. She wasn’t surprised either when Tyson came to her after the weekend and admitted that John had given him a shovel talk in private, one that he refused to share the details of (so she knew it had to be violent), but when she’d texted John to berate him, all her brother said was that he approved and that Tyson was a good guy.
That much she knew already, thank you very much.
The rest of their summer raced by. After Mat and Dante left, JT stayed for two weeks, just as thrilled for them as Tyson’s other friends had been (especially since he won the bet he had with Alex Kerfoot about them). After JT left, Kacey and Tyson’s mom came up to stay for a week, and their genuine heartfelt welcome to the family talks left Mollie more emotional than ever, Tyson just smiling with watery eyes (that he later denied).
And obviously her parents were thrilled, Tyson being dragged down to a couple of family dinner over the remaining six weeks of summer, in between his intense workouts, getting him ready for the upcoming season.
But those six weeks flew by faster than Mollie anticipated, the end of summer drawing closer, and Tyson only had few weeks before he needed to get back to Buffalo for training camp. His time at his cabin had come to an end, as had Mollie’s, so he’d come to stay at her apartment with her while he figured out what he wanted to for his remaining time.
The more time Mollie could spend with him, the better, so she wasn’t going to complain. Especially if it meant waking up in Tyson's arms in the mornings. Even if it meant Tyson watching her with adoring expressions as she shuffled through old lesson plans to see which she could spruce up ahead of the upcoming school year.
A few days into them living in her apartment together though, Tyson made breakfast for them both and sat down opposite her with a serious expression on his face, making her a little nervous. They ate mostly in silence, the radio playing in the background, and it wasn’t until he’d put their plates in the sink that Tyson was ready to talk.
“Everything’s been so good between us, right?” he blurted.
The nervous expression on his face made her heart twinge, and not in a fun way.
“It has for me?” she offered, wincing.
“It has for me too, I promise,” he said quickly, taking the edge off her anxiety, “I just…I’ve been thinking a lot. About our future. Where we could end up. Where I want our relationship to end up.”
She tried valiantly to ignore how her heart started beating a little faster.
“What have you been thinking?” she prompted, hoping her voice didn’t sound too shaky.
“I don’t know where I’m going to end up with hockey in the future. The Avs didn’t want me, it didn’t work out with the Wild, and who knows where I’ll be after this coming year with the Sabres after all the up and down this past season. I don’t know where I’ll be playing or what city I’ll be in, but…will you come with me?”
Mollie’s jaw dropped slightly, her breath catching in her throat. He wanted her to go with him? To leave Kelowna? Tyson saw her shock and immediately reached across the island counter to take both of her hands in his, desperate to ground her as he knew she needed.
“I know this is fast, or at least it would be by normal relationship standards, but with how long we’ve known each other and with how right this feels…I just can’t bear the thought of another 9 months without you. Especially not in Buffalo,” Tyson said, his eyes wide and honest.
Go with Tyson? Uproot everything she’d ever known, move away from all her friends, her job, her life?
“Tyson, I…”
She trailed off, biting her lip, unsure of how to continue as her thoughts swirled. But as soon as she did, she noticed how Tyson’s shoulders slumped slightly, his grip on her hands going limp.
“No, you’re right. It’s too soon, isn’t it? I couldn’t ask you to give up your whole life, just like that, that's not fair on you,” Tyson sighed, finally dropping her hands.
Her breath caught in her throat at the defeat in his eyes. That, more than anything else, she hated. How he second guessed himself? His lack of self confidence? That devastation, it just wasn’t right. So Mollie shook her head, taking his hands back in hers.
“Tys, I need a moment to process, yeah?”
He nodded, a glimmer of hope entering his eyes again, making her smile slightly. Mollie huffed out a breath, running her thumbs over his knuckles, as she tried to process his words. Moving with Tyson – moving in with Tyson fully – would change everything. It would be the biggest step she’d ever taken with a relationship, but with Tyson it would be…
“Tell me what’s going through your mind,” Tyson begged, interrupting her flow.
“You just can’t stand the silence huh,” she teased, unable to resist.
“You know I can’t,” he laughed.
But the laugh was strained, making her sigh. Time to be honest.
“I guess…the main thing going through my mind is that this is such a big step,” she admitted.
“Yeah it is. But it’s also exciting? And I wouldn’t have asked you if I wasn’t sure it would work,” Tyson said honestly.
She couldn’t help but blush slightly. The fact that he was so certain about their relationship was refreshing. And she knew that Tyson always put his whole heart into everything, which was exciting - no-one else had ever had this conviction.
“What about my job? My friends? My family? And a visa? I’ve never even left BC, you know I haven’t,” Mollie prompted, going through all her doubts.
Tyson tilted his head back slightly, averting his eyes as he chewed his lip, clearly deep in thought. She couldn’t help but smile – he really was putting so much effort into this.
“I know you love teaching, even though the school you’re at right now has terrible parents…but I know you’d also smash any teaching job in any place, so I think that part is solvable? Family and friends though…that’s the big sacrifice. And I know, because it sucks leaving mine at the end of every summer. It’s sucked leaving you at the end of every summer, even though we were only ever just friends before. I don’t want to leave you again, but I understand if only seeing everyone else a few times a year outside of summer is a deal breaker,” Tyson sighed, “The visa thing I can work out with my agent, so that shouldn’t be an issue. And I know that you haven’t ever left BC – but there’s so much of the world I want to show you, even if that starts with Buffalo.”
Mollie huffed out a breath at his words, knowing he was speaking from the heart. But what should she do? Tyson watched the frustration play out across her face and smiled sadly, squeezing her hands in comfort.
“Hey, whatever you decide, just know that it won’t change how much I love you, yeah?” he said softly.
He loves her? Of all the times to drop that declaration, so simple and sweet. How could her heart not sing at that?
“My god, Tys, I love you too. So much. And you’re right, it would suck to watch you leave again because everything is so different this year. I finally have you and to lose you?”
Mollie frowned, shaking her head as she cut herself off. How could she let him go?
Tyson saw the change in her expression, a wide smile spreading across his lips. “So…?” he asked hopefully.
She laughed at his prompting, and squeezed his hands back.
“Yeah, Tyson, I’m willing to try this, to try us,” Mollie nodded, smiling, “I’ll move with you, to Buffalo, and then wherever you go after that.”
Tyson whooped and stood up from his chair, making her laugh again as he ran around to her side of the island, which quickly turned into a squeal as he threw his arms around her and picked her up to spin her in a circle. The joy in his face was just pure happiness, and Mollie knew right then that she’d made the right decision.
“I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us,” Tyson grinned, resting his forehead against hers.
There was so much to think about, with moving, with getting a visa, with her job, with her apartment in Kelowna. But a future with Tyson? That was all Mollie wanted - and she couldn’t wait to see what the future held for them either.

You had to know this was coming. Cause. Duh.
Tyson and Maddie. Anything your heart desires here that you feel like sharing. Preferably not sad.

Hope It Never Ends
a/n: I love you 💜 anon for always reminding me how much I love these two. This is a little flashback moment to Tys and Maddie's past, back when they were teenagers in Kelowna. Back when things were simple but perhaps the beginning of something more...
Word Count: 2k Warnings: none that I can think of!
Sacred: (adjective) regarded with reverence. Synonyms include cherished, divine, revered.
There weren’t a lot of things that Madeleine Murphy considered powerful and important enough to consider sacred – except one tradition.
Summer evenings when Tyson and she would climb out of her bedroom window onto the roof, sitting on an old blanket, playing twenty-questions, and staring at the sunset.
Even though Madeleine always prided herself on her wordplay (she wanted to be a librarian after all), perhaps tradition wasn’t the correct term. There was never a specific time or date that this ritual happened. It was just something that they had been doing since they were 13, shortly after they met and realized that they were bound to be more than just schoolmates.
Madeleine showed him her discovery of how to remove the window screen, allowing her roof access the summer after they first met. Looking back, she did it because she wanted Tyson to think she was cool – what better way to get an adolescent boy’s attention than by doing something that you probably shouldn’t be doing? It worked and soon that was their go-to spot whenever they hung out.
The twenty-questions, however, was Tyson’s idea. It was a way to get to know each other but as a game instead of an interrogation. At first, all the questions were surface level: what’s your favorite color, what’s the best holiday, what’s the coolest thing you own? But eventually, both the location and the questions became deeper and more meaningful as time went on.
The roof of Madeleine’s childhood home became an oasis, somewhere they could sit and be alone and share without the pressure of parents or friends or teachers or coaches listening and potentially influencing their answers. It was a place of trust and truth.
Those moments with him became sacred to Maddie.
And this one, right now, she might soon consider to be the most sacred of them all. Because Tyson was leaving.
It wasn’t for another year, something she kept reminding herself when that fact popped into her head and took all sense of calm from her. He had committed to playing hockey in North Dakota starting in the 2016-17 season. This was still the summer of 2015. Tyson would stay here in the small town they shared together for another twelve months. Madeleine would still be able to sit with him on the roof for maybe another summer.
But there was an ache in her heart that told her this might be last.
“Oh, I got one,” Tyson’s voice dances on the summer breeze, pulling Maddie from her thoughts and back to the present moment, something she should’ve been focusing on anyway. “What’s the weirdest dream you’ve ever had?”
It’s almost immediate, the image that pops in her mind and she can’t stop the laugh and shake of her head as she considers telling him the answer.
“You’re going to think I’m crazy,” she sighs, her blue eyes bright as she looks over to him.
“I already think you’re crazy so what’s a little more weirdness?” Tyson gently teases, his easy joy relaxing her like it always did.
“Okay, fine,” she sighs, in part defeat and part disbelief that she was going to tell him this. “When I was six, I had a nightmare that I was being chased through the city streets by a giant wheel of cheese.”
“A wheel of cheese? Like a monster that looked like a wheel of cheese?”
“Nope, just a regular wheel of cheese that you’d see in a grocery store. And the way I escaped this wheel of cheese was by standing right where a triangle slice of it was cut out of it, so when it rolled over me, I was completely unharmed.”
If Tyson was keeping a serious poker face before, it crumbled at Madeleine’s explanation, his sputtering laughter making her cheeks heat in embarrassment.
“Wow, Maddie, that’s really terrifying.”
“I was six, okay!” she rebuts, her outrage ringing false as her own laughter paints the words. “And I think being chased is a very reasonable nightmare to have.”
“Yeah, but once you throw cheese into that situation, you’ve lost me completely.”
“You asked for weirdest dream not most realistic. What about you, Jost?”
“I don’t remember any of my dreams,” Tyson quips, that stupidly cocky smirk appearing on his face making Maddie scoff.
“What a cop out. Here I am, bearing my soul to you and you hit me with an I don’t know,” Madeleine says, her voice ladened with exaggeration.
“I can at least tell you that last summer, my mom tried to wake me up to go to the store with her or something and I said in my sleep – and I quote – but I don’t want to put up the Christmas lights,” Tyson replies, his own voice going into the grumbling whine as he relays his sleep-talking.
There is no stopping the laughter that falls from Maddie, the image perfectly clear to her as she had heard him mumble in his sleep multiple times during their previous sleepovers. Tyson just laughs with her before continuing.
“Like, it’s the middle of summer, Christmas is far away, I think you’re safe, bud.”
“You said no to your mom though? Impressive.”
“I didn’t say no, I just said I didn’t want to do it. There’s a difference, Maddie.”
Madeleine just hums a yeah sure sound, staring back out at the sun slowly sinking down, turning the skies a beautiful cotton candy pink.
These were the moments that Maddie would cherish forever; she thinks. No matter what happened, she would remember the evenings spent on her roof, her and her best friend’s laughter dancing and mingling in the air. But the knowledge of the possible ending hits her again, like a tidal wave crashing on her.
She would remember this forever but part of her didn’t want it to become just a memory. She wanted to be doing this with Tyson when they were in their twenties, in their thirties, up till the point that they couldn’t climb out of her bedroom window. The idea of a time without Tyson by her side was terrifying.
“What scares you most about the future?” she asks, her own racing thoughts forcing the question out of her mouth before she could stop to think it over.
Her blue eyes flit over to Tyson, the weight of her question fully registering, the smile disappearing from his mouth as his own gaze moves to look at the sunset. She can practically see the wheels turning in his head, can see him chewing over the possible answers that he could give her. Madeleine just keeps her attention on him, watching as Tyson’s shoulders raise in a sigh, his legs bending as he pulls his knees to his chest. Her heart tries not to ache at the sight of him looking so much like a little kid.
“I’m scared that I’m not going to be good enough,” he whispers.
Maddie can feel the honesty in his words and the genuine fear behind them. She doesn’t speak, just lets the silence linger, letting Tyson make the next decision; whether to deflect the question back to her or to elaborate. He chooses the latter.
“I feel like I’ve given so much of my life to this dream of playing hockey and I want it so badly but what if I never get there.”
“To the NHL?”
“Yeah, or what if I do but at some point, people decide they don’t want me anymore. I get traded or sent down to the minors or something else. I think that scares me more then never getting there. That there would be a moment, after all this hard work, where I’d have to accept that it’s not going to work out and I’ll have to give it all up.”
There isn’t really anything to say except false promises, promises that Madeleine knows she can’t keep. She couldn’t see the future, couldn’t tell Tyson that he would make it and that he wouldn’t have to give up playing hockey until he decided it was time. So, she just lets his words linger and keeps her eyes fixed on him, staring at his profile, memorizing the way his hair falls, the way he looks with his chin resting on his knees. It is a moment longer before Tyson sighs again, giving a small shake of his head, his body relaxing and stretching back out into its casual position before he looks back at her.
“Your turn.”
“I’m scared of things changing,” she answers immediately, the truth just tumbling from her lips like a waterfall. It’s her turn to sigh as she chews over her answer, her head slightly shaking at the ridiculousness of her fear before continuing.
“Like, I know change is a part of life and there is no use trying to resist is because things will change whether you want them to or not. But I like it here. Not just here in Kelowna, but here. This moment; hanging out with you, no curfew, no real responsibilities, no pressure. No worries about bills or relationships or jobs or school or any of that. I just want to keep a hold of these summer evenings forever. If I could repeat this moment every day for the rest of my life, I’d be content.”
Madeleine’s eyes turn to stare at the clouds now painted with the pastel hues of tangerine oranges and peach pink, the view just adding to the magic of this moment and just emphasizing how much of this was temporary.
“I just never want this to end,” she confesses, her words lingering in the evening stillness.
Tyson doesn’t speak immediately, just lets the silence fall, the only noise being the beginning chirps of the crickets. However, Maddie can feel his eyes trained on her face, seemingly memorizing the shape of her as she previously did to him.
“Well then, let’s promise each other something,” he finally speaks. The conviction in his voice causes Maddie’s gaze to turn to him, their eyes locking, and she is taken back by the seriousness reflecting in his pupils. “Let’s promise that no matter what happens, even if everything around us changes, we’ll still be there for each other. Okay?”
“Okay,” Madeleine whispers, her voice soft but the certainty behind her agreement strong.
The quiet peace washes over them again, their promise floating on the wind as they both lean back, looking out at the sunset, content to be together but lost in their own world, their own fears, their own minds. But it only lasts for a moment, the physical and mental space between them shattered as Madeleine feels the brush of a pinky against hers. She glances down to see Tyson’s finger reaching out to hers, caressing the side of her hand, a quiet coax. Her eyes dart back to his face but his gaze remains staring towards the sun. As if he was worried on how she’d react.
Madeleine assuages those concerns by linking her pinky with his, the childhood symbol of a promise never to break. A smile pulls at her lips when she sees Tyson sigh, his brown eyes looking towards her, a matching grin tugging at the corner of his lips. She doesn’t hesitate to lift their intertwined hands, her lips pressing against her own knuckles as a way to show she meant it, an action which Tyson mirrors. Their eyes lock and it takes every bit of Maddie’s willpower to stop her heart from leaping from her chest. Because the way Tyson is staring at her – with the gentle assurance and adoration – makes everything feel different.
This wasn’t the first pinky promise that they’ve made in the four years of knowing each other. But in this moment, they weren’t just a couple of kids making deals for the hell of it.
This meant more. It wasn’t something frivolous or flimsy – it was a vow, an oath, to the universe, to each other.
And it was theirs to keep. Forever.

tyson and flick with number 6 please
6. things you said under the stars and in the grass - tyson and flick
It hadn’t taken much convincing to get Flick to Wabamum Lake for a little impromptu summer getaway, and Tyson had booked a nice house right on the lake for long weekend. The house had largely been unused because the weather had been so perfect that they’d spent most of the weekend outside, even as the nights became mornings.
“You saved me, I think,” Flick whispered into the warm night air.
Tyson asked cautiously, “What do you mean?”
The stars in the sky always relaxed Flick so thoroughly that she didn’t feel any anxiety or need to hesitate. Tyson has become such an integral part of her life in the twelve months since they got together.
“I don’t know… I just feel like I’d be in a way worse spot mentally if it wasn’t for you.” She sighed, somewhere between happy and tired from a long, hot day. “I shouldn’t put all my happiness in one person—”
“That’s what I thought.”
“—you just make being happier a lot easier.”
Tyson rolled, until he was hovering over Flick. His face had transformed to something so deliriously happy that Flick was sure she’d never seen that look on his face.
She nearly melted into the grass beneath her back when he told her that she made him happier, too.

viva las vegas, viva las vegas
“viva las vegas” - the bruce springsteen version
Nate was determined not to let EJ win.
If there was one thing the older man had been able to do since they met, it was being able to get under Nate's skin. Even when they were separated by a few hundred miles with it being the middle of the off season and Nate was back in Cole Harbour and EJ was in his sprawling Hollywood Hills home.
His jaw ticked as he saw another comment from @bighorny under Morgan's latest post.
@stayincomphy more like stayin' hot hot hot
And of course he tagged him in it, telling him to keep an eye on his girl.
Morgan was in Vegas celebrating Jesse's bachelorette party. This last Christmas the Comphers had rented a cabin in Vermont for the holiday and of course Tyson, Laura and Kacey had been invited along with Nate and his parents and his sister Sarah and her husband, and not even a day into the trip, Tyson got down on one knee and asked Jesse to marry him.
Sometimes Nate still feels like his ears haven't recovered from Morgan and Kacey's squeals and shrieks as they practically tackled the youngest Compher once Tyson had slid the ring on her finger.
He knows EJ is doing this to get a rise out of him, which is his favorite thing to do that doesn't involve horses or wine, but this time it's not going to work.
Morgan would never do anything and he's stupid for even thinking it.
Josty was completely chill about Jesse having her bachelorette there and JT told Kacey to have fun, which is what he told Morgan to do too. Though he did make sure his favorite white bikini stayed behind. No one was allowed to see her wear that but him.
Seeing her laying on a lounger chair at the Aria's pool, classic blue and white striped one piece with cut outs on the sides made him close the app. If he kept looking, he'd miss her more than he already did and she'd barely been gone two days. He needed to take his mind off of all this. Just as he was about to grab Cox's leash, his phone pinged and of course it was a text from EJ.
[horseboy] you dogg you can't seriously be sitting at home in bumfuck canada while your girl's living it up in lost wages for shame nathaniel for shame
[dogg] fuck you johnson. you're just trying to get a rise out of me and it's not going to work this time. go pet a horse or stomp grapes or clean your dentures old man
[horseboy] me? try to get a rise out of you? Impossible
[dogg] i'm taking cox for a run and shutting off my phone. you'll be talking to the ether or whatever
[horseboy] the dogg doth bark too much as the saying goes. give the man of the house some head pats and ear scratches from his favorite hooman would ya? you have fun trying not to think about your girl living it up and looking so good doing it
Taking Cox for runs is how Nate always cleared his head when things were waying on his mind. When Morgan was with him they would meditate or do yoga, which always ended with him grabbing her when she got into more advanced poses and they would become a tangle of various limbs, laughing as he practically smothered her with his bigger frame.
He swore he wouldn't let EJ win, but as he increased his speed while running, he knew he was defeating the purpose of clearing his head, but all he could think about was Morgan in Vegas. Suddenly, he was back home and he was booking a flight. Logically he knew Morgan loved him and would never stray and he tried to think about all the things that sucked about Vegas like the fucking Golden Knights, their stupid castle in their arena, their dumb goal song, glow in the dark jerseys, the sun and how he had to wear SPF30 or he'd turn into a lobster, hangovers and gambling but none of it worked.
All he could think about was how none of the losers who were hanging out at the hotel pool and in the casino would see Morgan with Jesse and Kacey and not know she was taken. Jesse had the cute diamond Josty bought last year and was wearing that bright pink sash that said Bachelorette and a little crown in every post she made.
Guys weren't exactly known for taking no for an answer, but if he was there they wouldn't have a choice.
Of course he booked tickets for Josty and JT, too. He couldn't exactly show up alone. That was creepy.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Tyson knew he wasn't supposed to tell Jesse. Nate made that explicitly clear and yeah Nate outweighed him by like forty to fifty pounds and was taller than him, too and was generally scary when he wanted to be, but Nate wasn't scarier than Jesse.
Also, how were they supposed to start their married life together if he was kind of lying to her when they were engaged? Wasn't that bad luck or something? Whether it was or not, he wasn't going to risk it, so he sent her a quick text about Nate buying him and JT tickets to Vegas and how they would be there around six local time.
Jesse texted him a teasing taunt that said does this mean i get to crash your bachelor party? i've always wanted to go to a strip club
Tyson flushed just thinking about it. While Landy's bachelor party had gone completely off the rails, somehow, they had not ended up at a strip club and the truth was he didn't really want to go to one for his, but maybe...
“Earth to Josty. Come in Josty.” Suddenly JT's hadn was right in front of his face and he remembered where he was. O'Hare airport waiting with JT for Nate's flight from Dartmouth to land, os they could board the flight for Vegas together.
“You told Jesse, huh?” There was a knowing smile on his best friend's face. “Duh,” Tyson's tone was unapologetic. “It's bad luck to lie before you get married. It's like breaking a mirror or walking under a ladder or whatever. I'm not risking it.”
“That's such bullshit,” JT laughs, shaking his head. “You figured as soon as she saw us, she'd kick your ass eve if this was all Nate's idea. You are so whipped, man.”
“Don't call me whipped. You're just as whipped!” Tyson insists. “You told Kacey we were coming, too!”
“Because we have an open line of communication like adults. I wasn't afraid she'd kick my ass if I didn't tell her. It's a whole different thing than what happened with you and Jesse.”
“Okay, that is bullshit. An open line of communication? You communicate through memes! I've seen your text thread! Like, adults, too, really Coms? You drink out of Kacey's old Buzz Lightyear glass hwen you stay over at my Mom's and both of you drink milk straight from the carton. If anyone's the adult, it's me! I'm getting married! I'm one step away from a joint bank account and dividing my portfolio or whatever Landy talks about!”
“I can't take the two of you anywhere,” Nate sighs, piniching the bridge of his nose when he finds JT and Tyson shoving at each other and laughing after he picked up his bags. “He started it!” They said at the same time only making themselves laugh harder than they were already.
“I should've brought Landy to keep the two of you in line.” Nate grumbled as they made their way toward the gate.
“Good afternoon everyone,” A beautiful strawberry blonde in the standard flight attendant unifrom is standing at the front of the plane. Her eyes are a warm shade of glittering hazel and her smile is blinding but genuine. “My name is Kylie and I'll be your head flight attendant on our flight from beautiful Chicago, Illinois to exciting Las Vegas, Nevada. Please be seated while I perform the in-flight demonstration and we'll begin serving drinks and food once we take off in about twenty minutes.”
Before the call to switch to airplane mode comes over the speakers, Nate sees a text from Morgan come through.
[Red] you have some explaining to do, nate
The disappointment behind her text is obvious and Nate knows he can't blame JT and Tyson for this, but it doesn't stop him from glaring at his friends and saying, “You two really couldn't keep your mouths shut?”
JT's not about to fight with one of his Alternates but Nate is also the guy who's dating his younger sister, and right now he isn't one of his Alternates, he's the guy who's dating his sister.
“This was your idea,” He reminds him, keeping his voice cool. “We're,” He points to himself and Tyson. “On this plane because EJ got under your skin. Don't forget that, Nate. If Morgan's mad or disappointed, you have to deal with that. Don't take it out on me and Tys.”
Nate knows JT is right. He can feel the tips of his ears go red from being sheepish. He should be better than this.
“Sorry, man. You're right.” He admits and JT nods. “Of course I am.” He says smugly and Nate rolls his eyes, pulling out his eye mask from his carry on bag. He pays for the in-flight WI-Fi and turns on the meditation app Morgan found for him and he lets his mind and body relax before they land.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
With everyone settled and the food and drinks taken care of, Kylie is in the galley laughing at the younger flight attendants giggling over their phones. She checks her messages, breathing the familiar sigh of relief when she finds texts from her son and daughter. Marcus was a sophomore at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville on a lacrosse scholarship while Bethany was taking a gap year and backpacking through Europe with her two best friends. Next year she was going to UC Irvine to study astronomy.
She couldn't help but think her babies had grown up too dam fast.
Being a single mom hadn't been easy, but the three of them had made it through after her marriage with their dad had fallen a part.
“Oh my God Kylie,” Julie was twenty two and pettie with dark black hair and stunning green eyes. “The rich guy in first class was totally checking you out.”
“The silver fox?” Brandy, who had golden blonde hair and had recenlty gotten married was twenty seven as of last May, was the other flight attendant with them and her curiosity was piqued. Julie nodded eagerly, practically licking her lips while Kylie laughed and said, “Settle down now. We're not doing that. This is my job. I'm here to work. Not hook up or whatever you kids call it these days.”
“Is it because you finally gave your number to that super hot hockey player who's always flirting with you?” Julie's tone was hopeful. “The one who doesn't have his three front teeth? And is, like, ginormous? He's got the pretty blue eyes and the dimples, too, right?” Brandy questions. “Yes,” Julie practically gushes, clutching her chest as she swoons while Kylie sighs as she shakes her head.
“You two need to stop it. He is way too young for me. Now get back out there with your carts. We're on the clock and we are not being paid to gossip about something that is never going to happen.”
Erik Johnson, the ginormous hockey player with the pretty blue eyes and missing three fron teeth, was a frequent flier on this specific airline when he wasn't traveling professionally with the Avalanche. He was everything Brandy described and so much more. From the boyish flop of his unstyled blonde hair ot the ever present mischievous glint in his cornflower blue eyes to the way every shirt – button down, polo, sweater (if there was a chill) or t-shirt – stretched snugly over his obviously very firm chest to his flirtatious nature, he was hard to resist.
But Kylie had two college age children and he was in his thirties. Also, given their careers they would hardly ever be in the same place.
Not to mention his teammates could pass for any of Marcus's friends and she did not want to think about team events and games where she would be surrounded by women who were barely older than her own daughter.
Looking never hurt and it was hard not to enjoy the flirting. It was nice to know a man like Erik found her attractive.
Laughing to herself, Kylie put on an easy smile as she went back out to the cabin to see if the passengers needed anything.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
In California, EJ couldn't help but think of a certain gorgeous strawberry blonde flight attendant.
At first he thought Kylie's apprehension had to do with the missing teeth. Even though plenty of women told him they thought he looked better without his fakes, some were unsettled at first.
Especially if they didn't know he played hockey.
But he learned quickly it had more to do with his age. Being one of the older players on the team he never gave his age much thought when it came to dating. He generally wouldn't date a woman who was in her early twenties, but dating someone older had never crossed his mind until he met Kylie on a flight to Del Mar race track in Pasenda a year and a half ago. And honestly he didn't see anything wrong with dating a woman in her forties.
He knew she was at least 45 or 46, but that didn't really mean anything. Age was just a number after all.
Laying out by his pool surrounded by his pack, the affectionate name he gave his four dogs, he couldn't stop his mind from staying on Kylie.
It had been a long time since he had spent so much time thinking of just one woman. He wasn't ashamed of his bachelor status. There wasn't much he was ashamed of, really. The whole shebang of a wife, kids and a white pickett fence wasn't where he wanted to be. He liked living his life; going to Del Mar on a whim, maybe Hawaii, slipping his number to a pretty girl at a bar etc.
Fucking Landy he curses to himself.
The “don't you get lonely” talk was coming on stronger and stronger from his best friend. While EJ took pleasure in getting under Nate's skin (it was just too easy), Gabe was a whole different animal. He would get all concerned and go into full helpful Disney Prince mode with those big stupid crystal blue eyes of his and his big ass forehead would wrinkle in a way that was, somehow, still handsome and EJ hated it because it always worked and next thing he knew, he was spilling his guts.
As he began to scroll through Instagram, his phone pinged. Julie was a flight attendant Kylie always worked with. Way too young for him but pretty in an objective way and she was funny, too. They would text back and forth and if he ended up on a flight it was quite the coincidence.
Apparently she, Brandy and Kylie were laying over in Vegas before flying to Denver. He didn't need to be back in Denver for a few more weeks to start seriously training buuuuuuut Kylie didn't need to know that.
And Vegas was nice this time of year.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
How the girls were drunk already Nate didn't know.
They squealed when they saw them in the lobby at Aria and smelled pretty like they always did but the alcohol was still obvious.
If Morgan wasn't drunk she wouldn't have launched herself at him and started kissing him everywhere. She would've been mad, which is what he expected. Steadying her in his arms, she hiccuped and said, sincerely, “I missed you, Natey. You shouldn't be here, but I'm so happy you are.”
Nate couldn't stop himself from smiling. He had seen Morgan this drunk once. At the Dustin Lynch concert they all went to after winning The Cup last year. She was very clingy, basically, plastered to his back the entire night, her arms around his neck and her legs wrapped around his waist. Her freckles, somehow, stood out more like the copper and gold of her hazel eyes and her skin was flushed the warmest shade of pink and she couldn't stop laughing.
He loved everything about her, but seeing her like this was so rare he belived he liked this Morgan best of all. Then she'd go and something else and that Morgan would become his favorite and so on and so on.
“I missed you, too,” He finally said and she beams back at him and he wonders how he lived so long without her.
“Ugh,” JT groans bringing Nate back into the scene and there's Tyson and Jesse kissing like he just got back from war. Kacey laughs from inside JT's arms that are wrapped around her slim frame and teases her boyfriend, saying, “What, you don't like watching Tys try to see if his tongue can find Jesse's tonsils?”
“I need a drink,” The eldest Compher sighs with a resigning shake of his head. That breaks Tyson and Jesse apart and she giggles, “More drinks! Yes! Tha's what we need! You're so smart Joey!”
More drinks is defintely not what they need but Nate knows stopping them is pointless.
After checking into the suite the girls rented, they're piling out of Aria's front doors and onto Las Vegas Boulevard and none of them have a clue what the hot, sticky Vegas summer night will bring.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Layovers weren't something Kylie looked forward to. Though it was nice to not have to jump back onto another flight after only an hour or so after the passengers had departed and the plane was cleaned.
She let Julie and Brandy run off to cruise The Strip. They were responisble enough not to get into too much trouble with Brandy being married now, but oh to be young again she thought with a wry smile as he let herself indulge in a glass of crisp Pinot Grigio.
As she sipped at the wonderful taste of her favorite wine, an all too familiar voice reached her ears amongst the sounds of the dealers, slots and music thumping through the casino's speakers.
“Now, what's a pretty lady like yourself doing in a place like this all by your lonesome?”
A shiver only Erik could inspire races up her spine and Kylie's breath catches at the sight of the handsome, bulit hockey player. His hair's soft, falling just so across his forehead, those cornflower blue eyes twinkle with mischief and the promise of a good time. His dimples make her knees weak and if she wasn't sitting the sight of his unbuttoned pink linen shirt would have had them buckling underneath her. The sleeves are rolled up, of course, to reveal the tan skin of his thick vein covered forearms. His cologne is crisp and woodsy, a deep warm smell that makes her want to bury her face in his neck to breathe it in even deeper.
Taking another sip of her wine, she can't help the smile that crosses her lips. “You just happened to be in the neighborhood or something?”
Erik's eyes move shamelessly over her figure, leaving nothing but heat in their wake and Kylie is going to need something stronger than white wine if she's going to keep him at arm's length like she should.
He leans in, his lips hovering just above her ear, his breath warm as he says, his voice low and husky, making heat pool in her belly, “Something like that.”
“Erik...” She sighs, shaking her head, but there's a fondness in her tone, sparking hope for the Minnesotan. “I'm not getting down on one knee,” Erik laughs covering her her slender hand with his larger one. “A drink is hardly a proposal.”
“You flew all the way to Vegas from your house in California because Julie told you we had a layover here. I am a divorced mother of two grown children. One is in college and the other will be starting college next year. I do not have time for games.”
“That's fine because who said I was playing games? A flight from LA to Vegas is nothing. It's barely two hours. One drink and one dance won't hurt.”
The thought of feeling Erik's hard body pressed against her, his strong hands holding her hips as they swayed is almost too much to bear. He's far too good to be true. A handsome thirty something athlete interested in her, making her feel things she hasn't felt in so long, having the walls she built up starting to crumble, she almost doesn't know what to do.
Eyeing him critcally, Kylie huffs and holds up her index finger. “One dance and one drink, and that's it. Don't try to charm your way into antoher drink and another dance. It won't work.”
“We'll see.”

i know your motives and you know mine
the ones that love me, i tend to leave behind
if you know about me and choose to stay
then take this pleasure and take it with the pain
“love me harder” - by ariana grande and the weekend
Alcohol makes things increasingly clearer for Nate.
The three beers plus the copious amount of shots at Drais` in the Cosmo help confirm what he's known since he met Morgan, he can't live without her.
He thinks the DJ is playing that one song between Ariana Grande and The Weekend, but it's hard to be sure when all he's thinking about is Morgan.
She's pressed right up against him, moving her hips to the beat of the song and dancing has never been his forte, but she's always been able to pull him onto the floor without much protest from him. Even before they were together she could get him to dance.
He can feel her hips through the silk of the tiny slip dress she's wearing. It's burgundy and brings out the different shades of carmel and copper in her hazel eyes. One of the straps has fallen off her shoulder, the thin stripped is wrapped around her bicep and he can see the cluster of freckles he memorized after their first night together. Her red hair frames her face perfectly, her cheeks are flushed prettily from the alcohol and the dancing, her alabaster skin the color of a perfectly ripe peach now.
She stops grinding against him and he lets out a strangled groan, because, why??????
Then she drapes her arms around his neck, the chunky heels of her shoes bring her closer to his height and she rests her head on his shoulder and this he can do, sway and hold her close so he can smell the coconut of her shampoo and the peonies of her perfume.
She murmurs the lyrics to the song, “Cause if you want to keep me, you gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta, got to love me harder. And if you really need me, you gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta, go to love me harder.”
Sober nate would not do this. Sober Nate would be mortified. But Nate is not sober.
Nate has had three beers and who knows how many shots because the bartender saw Jesse's Bachelorette sash and crown thing and they wouldn't stop pouring Fireball? Jager? Crown? Nate can't honestly remember. What he does remember is hearing Morgan giggle and seeing her look at him, happy and dopey expression on her beautiful face as she draped herself all over him, which meant he was knocking back the shots as fast as he could.
So again, sober Nate would not do this, but Nate – to reiterate – was not sober.
“Morgan Marie Compher,” He says with all the conviction he can muster as they continue to sway. “I wanna marry you.”
“Natey...” Her voice is soft and hopeful as she touches his cheek. She bites her lip and Nate groans, it's so hot. “You really do?” She looks at him through her velvet lashes and he answers her. “Hell yeah, I really do.”
And that's how they find themselves her; The Little White Wedding Chapel.
Morgan squealed and launched herself at him, Nate somehow having retained enough of his quick reflexes to catch her slim frame. How they broke apart from their steamy makeout, their hands nearly tearing at their clothes, to find JT, Kacey, Jesse and Tyson they don't know.
They don't know how they got to The Little White Wedding Chapel, really. But they're there standing in front of an Elvis impersonator, JT and Tyson standing next to Nate and Jesse and Kacey next to Morgan.
“Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here to join...” Elvis begins and Jesse hiccups and slurs, “Waaaaaait, a second! Mo Mo doesn't have a veil. She needs a veil.”
“Uh-huh,” Kacey agrees nodding eagearly. “Pause,” She hiccups, making the sign for timeout. The girls run off to the bridal shop in the chapel, giggling and stumbling as they grab Morgan and pull her along with them. When they come back five minutes later, Nate's breath catches.
His heart skips a beat and he breathes out, “Wow,” sounding mesmerized as Morgan walks toward him again, this time a soft tulle veil covering her face. It's fastened to a sparkling tiara and even in her burgundy slip dress and chunky heels, an outfit made for clubbing, she looks like a princess.
To Morgan as she stands across from Nate in his tight ftting black polo and matching slacks while the silver Tag Huer watch she got him on his birthday last year gleams on his right wrist, he looks like Prince Charming to her. He looks like the man she's been waiting for her whole life.
Elvis starts again. “Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here to watch this hunk-a-hunk of burnin' love join this little mama in holy matrimony...”
“I do,” Nate murmurs, feeling more certain of this – being with Morgan forever – than he has about anything.
“With the power vested in me by the great state of Nevada, I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss the bride.”
Nate lifts Morgan's veil and kisses her with all the tenderness and love he ever has. JT and Tyson whistle while Kacey and Jesse yell, “Get it, girl!”
The six of them pour out of the chapel under a flurry of rice and rose petals, laughing and hollering as Nate and Morgan kiss again.

“I don't want to get married, Joseph,” Kacey says softly and JT blinks, his brain is workign overtime between all the shots and the beer and the champagne they all shared after Nate and Morgan's impromptu wedding. “Okay,” He manages, staring at his girlfriend curiously.
They're walking around Las Vegas Boulevard, not having a particular destination in mind and they let the others walk up ahead.
Kacey had caught him completely by surprise. He never expected to find himself falling for her while Tyson and Nate were falling for his sisters. One day she was Tyson's baby sister who teased and then suddenly she was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen.
She was Jost, then she became Kacey and after that he was calling her Kace and then she had a drawer full of clothes at his place and he was calling her baby before he could blink.
Marriage was a long way away. She was finishing up her degree and he knew how important that was, that she graduate and have a job lined up before she moved to Denver. He admired that about her, how she knew what she wanted and wasn't afraid to go after it.
“I love you,” Her soft voice brings him back and he smiles down at her. “Me too, Kace,” He assures, brushing back a loose curl from her untamed tangle of curls he loves to run his fingers through. “Wanna show you how much I do, JT,” She murmurs into his chest.
He laughs and kisses the crown of her head and a neon sign catches his eye. He's just drunk enough to have the courage to do this. If he were sober, he wouldn't even think of doing this.
He tilts her chin upwards and bends, and they kiss softly, their tongues meeting and after breaking apart, he's pulling her toward the purple neon sighn that says Hart and Huntington Tattoo Company.
Kacey giggles as she unbuttons her tight pleather pants and the tattoo artist eyes her suspcioulsy as she lays down, revealing the skin of her slim hip. She's more or less tipsy now. It's been hours since the margirtas and the endless shots and the two swigs of champagne.
“I'm basically sober. Scout's honor.” Her Girl Guide's salute is clumsy and does not inspire confidence in the severe looking tatted up raven haired female tattoo artist. “I love him,” The young Canadian says, her soft tone radiating honesty and the older woman's blood red lips twitch.
In her green eyes, however, is understanding. “The letters JT with the number 37 hanging from the end of the J, yeah?”
Kacey knows the smile on her face is dreamy as she meets JT's familiar chocolate gaze across from hers and she answers, “Yes,”
While her hip is being tattooed, JT's tight fitting shirt has been discarded revealing his toned chest and six pack. Across his right pec her name and number for volleyball are being inked into his skin. He wrote her name down, so the tattoist could mimic his own handwriting and at the end of the “y” in her name he added, the number 10.
Most tattoo artists tried to talk couples out of doing stuff like this. Especially if they weren't married or they were far from sober. But the husband and wife who were tattooing the young couple that had stumbled in, had a feeling they were the real deal.
“That's forever, baby,” Jenny mused as her husband Ronnie wrapped his burly arm around wher waist as JT and Kacey left the shop, hand in hand, matching besotted smiles on their faces. “Fuck yeah it is,” Ronnie's gruff voice agreed.

and i know that it must be the woman in you
that brings out the man in me
i know that i can't help myself
you're all that my eyes can see
“feels like the first time” - by foreigner
What in the world have I got myself into Kylie thinks as she and Erik sway to the familiar guitar and keyboards to the classic Foreigner song “Feels Like The First Time.” It may have been only one drink, but it's been several dances to several songs.
Her hips fit perfectly inside his large, broad plams and the crown of her strawberry blonde hair slides right under his chin. Her body fits against his like they're two pieces of a puzzle.
This is too much and she shouldn't dare, but before her rational side can take hold,; she lets him tilt her head toward his and lets his lips draw hers into a kiss.
It's been too long since she's felt like this; completely overwhelmed by someone.
Erik can't remember the last time he's wanted to kiss someone so badly. The chase had always been the best part of the song and dance. He had never really wanted to catch someone until Kylie. Not because she was resisting his advances, but because he wanted to have her in his life, to share more than just his bed for a night or two.
The need to breathe is a curse because all he wants to do is keep kissing her. Their tongues met softly and they break apart, her slender hand clutching at his linen shirt while his large hand is firmly gripping her right ass cheek, keeping her pressed against him as they catch their breath.
“This is so very bad,” Kylie laughs in disbelief.
There are so many reasons why. Number one is being how she's three years shy of being fifty and as she triest to back out of his grip, he tightens his hold. “No way,” His voice is low and deep, making her knees buckle. “You're not running away after kissing me like that,”
“Erik,” She pleads for him to understand this will never work or for him to convince her that it will, she's not sure what she wants more.
“Here's the problem,” Erik murmurs, his other hand tracing the slim curves of her left side before he brings that hand to cup her beautifully formed high cheekbone, so it's impossible to look away from him. “It's been so long since anyone's told you how beautiful you are, how funny. So long since anyone's wanted you, which is a damn shame,” Every velvet word makes Kylie shudder and through the silk of her blouse she can feel her nipples peaking and God he's going to be the death of her.
“Which means all you can think to do is run. Well, I'm telling you that you're beautiful and you're funny and that I want you,” His nose moves up and down the curve of her neck, breathing her in before his stunning cornflower eyes bore into her cinnamon drenched hazel with such honesty and want, she has no choice but to believe him. 'I'll be on the fight back to Denver and you can decide to stop fighting this and take a chance or you can let me down easy. It's up to you, but trust me when I say, Kylie, you're beautiful and you're funny and I've never wanted anyone as badly as I want you.”
The kiss he leaves her with is as soft and tender as it is passionate.
She brings her fingers to her lips, watching Erik go and she knows no man has ever made her feel like this.
Erik is offering her everything. She just has to step up and take it.

“last first kiss” - by one direction
This is not, objectively speaking, something “grown ups” who are engaged would do; have four large supreme pizzas, a sick pack of beer and an assortment of candy inside a blanket fort while they're in their underwear, but Tyson and Jesse aren't really concerned about the perception of being grown ups, they're too busy being so in love they can't even see straight.
The deep evergreen lace of her bralette and cheeky underwear against her warm alabaster skin makes Tyson's blood grow hot and thick in his veins.
While Jesse can't stop thinking about how his black boxer briefs hug his thighs.
They both laugh and snort, unaware of the door to the suite opening and how JT and Kacey are stumbling inside. Or it could be Nate and Morgan. It honestly doesn't matter. What matters is they're here together, inside their blanket fort and Jesse has the 3.5 karart diamond ring on her finger.
“Awww man,” Tyson groans, making Jesse blink as she looks at him curiously while he pouts. “Morgan and Nate got married tonight. We're engaged. Elivs was supposed to marry us. They aren't engaged. That's not how it works.”
Jesse giggles and shakes her head as she crawls toward him to sit in his lap. Her amrs wind around his neck and she presses her forhead against his, lovesick smile on her pretty face. “I don't want Elvis to marry us, Tyson,” Her voice is soft and warm, making his heart skip a beat like always. “I want a whole wedding with everyone there. I want my Dad and Joey to walk me down the aisle, to give me away. I want to wear a pretty dress and you to wear a suit.”
Tyson swallows thickly. It's so easy to imagine Jesse on a summer day in a simple white dress with a short veil and Bob – please, tyson i think you can call me bob now and not mr compher – and JT on either side of her walking toward him. Kacey and his Mom are standing with him along with Fab and Barzy and he can't breathe.
Her smile is blinding just like it is right now with only the light from the glittering hotels on the Strip filtering through the sheets of their blanket fort.
He slips her engagement ring off of her finger and she yelps, “Hey!” but he silences her with a heated kiss before she can say anything else. Their tongues tangle together sweetly, her fingers sinking into his curls as his other hand, that's not holding her ring slides up and down her back until they break apart, their lungs burning with the need to breathe.
“Give that back,” Jesse laughs, shoving at his toned chest. “My super hot fiance gave it to me.”
Tyson laughs, loud and unabashed, like always. Flicking an olive from one of the pizzas, Jesse laughs and retaliates by flicking a pepperoni at him. A mini food fight breaks out, Tyson able to catch most of the toppings she flicks at him inside his mouth. They settle and he takes a deep breath, staring deeply inot the familiar warmth of Jesse's soft brown eyes.
He grabs for her hand like he did at the cabin last Christmas and her heart pounds like it did on that crisp winter day. “Tys,” Shaky and soft, falls off her lips and he kisses her quickly before taking another deep breath.
“We're gonna get married just like you want. You're going to wear a pretty dress and I'll wear a suit and your Dad and JT are going to give you away, but I want to promise you stuff right now. Say vows or whatever,” He waves his hand and she nods, feeling her eyes getting misty. “You're my best friend, J. Life is crazy and you never know what's goin g to happen the next day, the next minute or hour, but I know if you're there, it's going to be okay. I know it's not always going to be easy. I don't know a lot, like, having life insurance or buying a house, but I know there's no one else I want to learn all that stuff with execpt you. But what I do know is life will be the most fun because it's with you. I promise, Jesse Chloe Compher, that I will love you forever even if you steal the last of the ketchup chips, forget to buy milk and still can't cook. I promise I will take care of you and won't let you get behind on Grey's Anatomy and I won't watch ahead of you on Ginny and Georgia. I want to be your last first kiss. Will you be mine?”
Jesse can't stop the smile from crossing her face. Seh can't believe she gets to spend the rest of her life with the incredibly sweet and funny and cute boy that's in front of her. He slips her ring back onto her finger and she takes a deep breath, glancing at the diamond before meeting his beautiful, big chocolate eyes.
“Tys, I promise to love you forever. I won't ever let you get down on yourself after a bad game. I will always be your biggest fan, through the ups and the downs. No matter where hockey takes you, I'll be right by your side ready to cheer you on. I can't wait to see you grow and become the best version of yourself on and off the ice. I know you'll never let me down, that if I need you, you'll be there giving me all the support and strength. We can do anything together, so bring on buying a house and figuring out life insurance. I promise,” She laughs, touching his face before leaning into kiss him quickly. “To always make you smile and laugh, to never let you stay sad for too long. I promise to learn how to make Laura's famous Nanaimo bars so you'll always have a tatse of home around. I promise to wear something cute to bed every night. Yes, Tyson Jost, I will be your last first kiss.”
The next kiss they share is longer and as passionate as ever.
When Tyson lays Jesse down amongst all the pillows and blankets, she couldn't say, but all she knows is the warmth of his body against hers. Seh arches against him and he fumbles slightly with the front clasp of her baralette and then his lips are on her skin, making her thighs rub together as his tongue circles one of her nipples. He's so good at this she wonders how she lived so long without him.
They're a tangle of limbs; panting and sweaty, their skin sticking together after they both reach their highs, foreheads pressed together and dopey smiles on their faces.
“We're married now,” Tyson says huskily and Jesse giggles. “Yeah, we are. I'm Mrs. Tyson Jost,” She murmurs. “I'm Mr. Jesse Compher.”
And that's how they fall asleep in the blanket fort in the middle of the sprawling and expensive suite at the Aria hotel. Still a little drunk but as in love as they ever have been.
i wanna be last, yeah
baby, let me be your, let me be your last first

hey love it’s your luck of the puck fic exhange writer!
now before I begin writing anything for your fic I have a couple of questions.
1. who do you want me to write for from your list? I write for all of the players but if you don’t have a favourite then pick your top three!
(jack hughes, quinn hughes, trevor zegras, andrei svechnikov, matthew tkachuk, brock boeser, nico hischier, charlie coyle, tyson jost, nolan patrick, mat barzal, brady skjei, cole caufield, luke hughes, elias pettersson, jake oettinger)
2. any players or topics you would like me to avoid mentioning?
3. OC or Reader insert? (If it’s oc then please list a name or the vibe you’d like their name to go by)
4. Is there a certain trope you like or one you dislike?
- 🍀
hey friend!! hope you’re doing well. looking forward to seeing what you come up with💚
1) my top three from my list are nico hischier, quinn hughes and trevor zegras. but if none of those are speaking to you, anyone else from that list is perfectly fine by me:)
2) hmm, nothing comes to mind!! i’m pretty flexible to everything
3) i prefer OCs, but if reader inserts are your thing, go for it!! for an OC, i’m also flexible. i do love naturey names (lily, willow,) or like “place” names (brooklyn, sydney) but that’s not a deal breaker
4) i love pretty much all tropes tbh. i do have a soft spot for friends to lovers, second chance romance, brother’s best friend / any previous connection to lovers (if that makes sense). but seriously, whatever you come up with im sure i’ll love❤️

Hi, this is your summer fic exchange anon!!
1. So based off of the players and themes you selected:
(Themes: reader insert or OC (please refer to bio). fluff, hurt/comfort, angst - with a happy ending. Players: Frederik Andersen, Tyson Jost, Andrei Svechnikov, Elias Pettersson, Joel Farabee, Nick Blankenburg, Nico Hischier), do you have a specific set preferences in mind (Ex. you would really prefer if I wrote for Joel Farabee/you would prefer anything fluff) or could I just pick any of these things for the story?
2. I like to write based off of songs so do you have any specific songs (or artists) in mind or could I pick any song?
3. Do you prefer for the fic to be set in the summer or it doesn't matter to you when the story is set?
4. Do you like already established relationship stories or do you prefer a story that establishes the relationship?
5. What’s your dream career if you have one? I like to personalize my stories as much as possible
Thank you :)

Part 1: Christmas Day and the day after Christmas
The name for Christmas comes from the shortening of “Christ’s Mass,” a traditionally Christian holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ to the Virgin Mary and Joseph in a manger in Bethlehem. Although the exact date of his birthday is unknown, around the fourth century the Catholic church fixed the date of this celebration to be December 25th. Other religions and belief systems have similar celebrations around the same time, such as the Winter Solstice, or Midwinter. Celebrations include a mixture of pre-Christian, Christian, and non-secular traditions, such as gift giving, completing an Advent Calendar or Advent Wreath, Christmas music, church services, a special meal with family and loved ones, Christmas trees, lights, nativity scenes, and Santa Claus to name a few.
The day after Christmas, known as Boxing Day in some European countries, is traditionally known as a shopping holiday. In America, this is typically the day when people start to return any unwanted Christmas gifts, stock up for next Christmas on items that are marked down on sale, or see friends that they hadn’t been able to see before Christmas.

December 21, 2021
“One fifteen means fifteen minutes before I have to clock in. Fifteen minutes before a twelve-hour shift that I’m not ready for and don’t have enough caffeine for,” Anne muttered to herself, staring at her reflection through her car's rearview mirror. “But, fifteen minutes before getting to do something that I thankfully love, something that I enjoy doing.” No matter how long the shift in front of her, Anne had developed a habit of giving herself a pep talk before she got out of her car. “Whatever happens, you’ve helped someone.”
The last part wasn’t always true, knowing that there was the possibility that something could go wrong that she and the other nurses and doctors wouldn’t be able to fix. Lying to herself that everything was going to be ok was the only want to convince herself to go into the hospital every day. Finally mustering up enough courage to get out of her car, she grabs her bag from the backseat, heading in for yet another long day right before the Christmas holiday.
The maternity ward where Anne worked never ceased to be hectic, the miracle of life happening at least once an hour. No matter how much Anne had studied in nursing school, nothing could have prepared her for the stress that could come from the job, the long hours, the potential for something so right to turn so wrong in a minute, the way nothing can go planned since the baby dictated all, the mess that comes with every birth, or the joy that results from a former patient sending her the occasional picture of a baby she helped deliver as they’re growing up.
“Hey, Tyson, come on!” comes from inside the open doors of the building, Anne not paying attention to who it was coming from, causing her to collide with a stranger, spilling her much-needed coffee all over the both of them.
“Shit,” she says, not looking up from the brown splatter on what should be mint green scrubs. “I am so sorry.”
Standing in front of her was a curly-haired boy, about her age, wearing what she was sure was a Colorado hockey jersey. Beyond that, she had no idea. “No, no, it’s my fault. I wasn’t looking where I was going. Let me buy you another,” he offers, ignoring the persistent calls from his friends to hurry up.
Anne checks her watch: 1:19. “It’s ok. I don’t really have the time, I have to clock in in eleven minutes, and knowing the cafeteria or the vending machines, it would take a lot longer,” she says, trying to get by him. Before he can protest, she gets to the elevator that would bring her to her floor, thankful that it was ready to get her there without her having to wait. The doors start to close, only to be stopped by a hand stuck through them, the curly-haired boy with the coffee stain down the front of him getting on the elevator with her. Anne gives him a confused look, begging him to explain why he was trying to make her late for her shift.
“If you aren’t going to let me buy you one now to make up for it, at least let me see where you work so I can drop one off for you.”
Anne rolls her eyes, unamused by the man in front of her as he attempts to flirt with her. “That would be nice, but the chances of me getting it before it goes cold are slim to none, so you need to suggest something else if you really want to buy me a coffee.”
“Let me get your number so I can buy you one when you aren’t working?” he asks, reaching into his pocket to pull out his phone. 1:25. “I’m Tyson, by the way.”
The elevator dings, signaling that they were on Anne’s floor, opening the door to nurses and doctors running around, expectant fathers who were probably kicked out of the delivery room for making the mom too nervous pacing the halls, grandparents trying to control younger children who had little to no idea what was going on as they waited in the strange building. Anne walks to the backroom to drop her stuff off and clock in, typing her information into the stranger’s phone as he followed her like a puppy, his friend’s texts coming across the top of his screen asking where he went so they could leave.
“I’m Anne, and I’ve got to go,” she tells him, handing back his phone. There was no way he was going to text her, and it’s not like the coffee was that big of a deal to him. She could go to the vending machine down the hall and grab one during her break, or have someone else on their break do it for her if she needed it sooner.
“Can’t wait for our coffee date, Anne,” he says, winking at her before shoving his hands in his pockets and sauntering back down the hallway.
“Who is he?” her coworker, Jess asked, popping up out of nowhere. “He’s hot.”
“In more ways than one, apparently,” Anne jokes, “he’s also wearing my hot coffee on his shirt.”
“You didn’t,” Jess scolds her, turning her around to see the coffee that was spilled down Anne’s own outfit, knowing Anne’s tendency to be a little absent-minded as she gets wrapped up in her own thoughts. “Anne, you did.”
“Not on purpose!”
“DeFormicola?” Anne’s supervisor, Jackson, pops his head into the room just as she was clocking in, “We need you in room 414.”
“Saved by the bell,” Anne teases, walking down the hall to where all the noise was coming from, trying to throw on the appropriate clothing before she went into the room, struggling to get the gloves on as she entered.
“Ok, Erin, we’re going to need you to push,” one of the doctors says, Anne standing behind him as she watched the baby’s head crowning.
This was her favorite part of the job, helping the mother stay calm and trying to make sure that despite the child coming out of her, she was as comfortable as possible. Normally, she would be with the mom as soon as she came in, Erin clearly nervous as to what was going on. They had to be first-time parents, the dad going back and forth to Erin’s side and behind the doctor, looking mortified each time and clearly regretting what he was seeing.
“It’s a boy!” the doctor says, handing the new baby to a breathless Erin.
“A boy! A boy!” the dad yells, going out to the hallway, Erin clearly unamused by whatever antics he was going about.
“Don’t worry, he’s not the first one to do that,” Anne reassures her, knowing that something like that would happen at least five more times during her shift, hearing the father’s voice repeating the phrase. “I’m going to get him cleaned up and then get him right back to you, ok?” Anne asks, reaching for the baby as everyone else around her tries to clean everything else up.
“Be careful with him,” Erin warns, not meaning anything bad by it. She was definitely a first time mother.
“I will be,” Anne tells her, feeling her phone vibrate in her pocket as she does. “So you have a name picked out yet?”
“We were thinking Matthew.”
Anne turns her head, smiling at Erin. “That’s a good name. My older brother is named Matthew.”
Erin smiles at her, the father finally coming back in, clearly overjoyed by the birth of their new baby. Anne hands him back to his parents, Matthew screaming his head off as they get wheeled into another room.
Anne goes over to the desk, sitting down where she was supposed to be for the start of her shift to do paperwork, but the uncertainty in the hour by hour of the schedule was not surprising. She pulls out her phone, ‘Maybe: Tyson’ coming up across her screen.
“He’s already texting me,” she alerts Jess whose head whips away from her computer to look over Anne’s shoulder at what message the mystery man could have sent her.
“He’s horny.”
“Jessica!” she squeals, wishing she was more shocked by what her friend had said. “Why is that always your first reaction to a boy sending a message?”
She shrugs, swiveling back to her own computer, “I’m normally right. What’s he saying?”
“He wants to know when he can buy me coffee.”
“Horny.”
“Enough.”
“You should date him.”
Anne turns to her, clearly unamused by Jess’s need to continue the conversation. “I don’t have to date anyone.”
Jess lets out a long sigh, Anne knowing that she was rolling her eyes. “I’m not saying you have to, I’m saying you should.”
“Ok, I don’t want to date anyone.”
“Oh, come on Anne,” Jess says, getting up and plopping herself on the desk in front of Anne, fiddling with the wire connecting the mouse to the rest of the computer. “You work in a maternity ward where people become parents every day, and you haven’t even thought of finding a man?”
“You don’t have a point,” Anne tells her, not making eye contact with her.
“My point,” Jess says, leaning over to block Anne’s view of her computer screen, “is that you can’t be single forever.”
“Says who?”
“Didn’t you tell me that you were named after the patron saint of the town your grandmothers were from?”
Anne rolls her eyes, knowing where this was going. It was going in the same direction that this conversation always went in when she had it with her mom every single holiday. “All four of us are named after the patron saints of the towns our grandparents are from.”
“St. Anne is the patron saint of child care, grandparents and mothers.”
“She’s also that patron saint of unmarried women, so your argument is invalid, as usual.”
Jess takes in a breath to say something, cut off by Jackson calling for Jess to go into one of the delivery rooms. “Just don’t say no because you think you have to be single,” she advises as she walks away.
Anne leans back in the chair, rubbing her hands over her face. “This is how Christmas is going to go, isn’t it?” she asks herself.
=============
December 25, 2021
The number of cars lining her parent's driveway meant that she was one of the last ones there, but knowing her aunts and uncles, she wasn’t the last one there. Her parents were the ones who did Christmas Day for her dad’s family, Christmas Eve being the anniversary of her mom’s mom’s death, and, on top of that, Teresa doesn’t talk to her family over some argument and grudge being held over their parent's house.
Scanning the cars, she didn’t see the one belonging to her brother Matthew, or his wife, Stephanie. “I’ll just leave Harper’s gifts in the car,” Anne mutters to herself, trying to juggle as many gifts as she could while also balancing the box of pastries her mom asked her to pick up for dessert.
Without a free hand to open the door, Anne did everything she could to ring the doorbell with her elbow, praying that someone would come to open the door before she dropped anything.
Her younger brother, Sebastian, opens the door, a disappointed look on his face. “What the fuck is all this for?” he asks, taking some of the bags from her arms to lighten her load.
“Merry Christmas to you, too,” she remarks, “Yours is still in my car if you’re wondering.”
“Did you have to get gifts for everyone?” he asks, Anne greeting her aunts and uncles on the way to the tree to put everything down for later.
“Well, it’s Hazel’s first Christmas," she explains, referencing their sister's youngest daughter, "So getting her something and not getting the other children something seemed wrong, and then Jessica took me shopping and kept saying things like ‘oh this would be perfect for Lucy,’ or ‘oh don’t have you an aunt who likes mystery novels?’ And everything went downhill from there.”
Sebby groans, walking with Anne back out to her car to retrieve the rest of the gifts, Anne still holding the box of pastries since they hadn’t made it to the kitchen yet. “Please tell me you didn’t get Aunt Lisa that Agatha Christie illustrated novel that the bookstore was selling.”
“Please tell me you didn’t get Aunt Lisa that Agatha Christie illustrated novel the bookstore was selling,” Anne laughs, Sebby nodding his head. “I got a gift receipt.”
“What did you end up getting Matthew?” he asks her. Anne had texted Sebby in panic on Black Friday, coming home from a day of shopping with Lucy that left her without a gift for Lucy’s twin brother.
Grabbing the rest of the gifts and handing them to Sebby, she closes the door to her car and starts to go back inside. “I found this ‘make your own wine’ kit that I think he would like. That way Steph doesn’t have to listen to him complaining about how the stuff she drinks is ‘too sweet.’”
“What about for me?” Sebby asks, nudging Anne with his elbow as they arrange the rest of the gifts in the already mountainous pile under the tree.
“Oh, I knew there was someone I forgot,” she says sarcastically, Sebby ripping the bow off one of her carefully wrapped presents and throwing it at her. “Ok, now I’m never getting you a gift again.”
Sebby laughs, helping his older sister off the ground. The two of them wander into the kitchen, slipping in unnoticed due to the sheer number of family members and noise that was filling the room. “Aunt Anne! Aunt Anne!” Harper and Skylar squeal in unison when her nieces spot her, hoping that either she or Sebby had grabbed Harper, Matthew, and Stephanie’s gifts. She didn’t think there was anything left in her trunk.
“Hey there, fireflies,” Anne greets them, bending down as they both kiss her on the cheek. “Guess what? Santa stopped by my place and left some gifts for you, but he made me promise that you two were really good today if you want to open them after dessert, ok?”
The two girls nod excitedly, bouncing up and down at Anne’s words. To still be young and believe in Santa, that must be nice.
“Hey, ma,” Anne finally finds her mother, putting down the box of pastries in front of her and kissing her on the cheek. “Upstairs or downstairs fridge?”
“It goes downstairs. Come on, I have someone I want you to meet,” her mother says, dragging you away from your aunts that had aggregated around her. They all had excited looks on their faces, something that instantly worried Anne as she followed her mother down the stairs with the box. She could hear Matthew and Lucy’s voices, knowing that her brother and sister’s wife and husband had to be down there with them, too. “Matthew told me about this friend of his who couldn’t make it home for Christmas,” her mother whispers before she got to the last step.
“Mom, no,” Anne says, already knowing where this was heading. “I told you: I don’t need a boyfriend.”
“But I don’t have a grandson,” her mom whines, shaking Anne’s hand in her own against her chest.
“How is that my fault?”
“If you just find a nice boy, and get married, I just know you’re going to be my child that has a boy.”
“Oh my god,” Anne groans, pushing past her to get to the fridge.
Teresa pulls Anne over to the couches where her siblings were, Lucy sitting on one with her feet in Jason’s lap, Jason’s hand lazily rubbing his wife’s shins. Matthew was on the other, Stephanie nuzzled against his shoulder, all four of them with a glass of wine and three bottles open. Next to Matthew was a guy sitting there awkwardly, straightening his back when he saw you while Sebby tried to contain his laughter as he sat on the floor. “Jeremy, this is my youngest daughter, Anne. Anne, this is Jeremy,” she introduces the two of them before running up the stairs.
“I do have a girlfriend, actually,” Jeremy says, “So I’m sorry.”
Anne and her siblings burst out laughing, Lucy pouring her sister a glass of wine. “If only this were the first time Ma tried to set Anne up with a guy who was seeing someone.”
“I even tried to tell her that but she didn’t listen,” Matthew adds. “It’s better than when she tried to set you up with Adam,” he says, referencing Lucy’s partner at their optometry practice.
“Yeah, his husband wasn’t too thrilled by that potential match,” Sebby says.
They all keep talking, Anne just sitting and listening to them reminisce about all the people their parents had tried to set her up within their desperate attempt for her to no longer be single. It didn’t help that the last time she listened to them about dating was Andy, the boy who cheated on her when they got to college. Apparently going to school half an hour from each other wasn’t enough for him to keep up their two-year relationship instead of shoving his tongue down multiple girls throats before doing god only knows what else.
“When do you think they’ll stop trying to set me up with someone?” Anne finally pips in, accidentally cutting off something Jeremy was saying as she stared at the wine she was swirling in the glass.
“When you get a boyfriend,” her siblings say in unison.
“I hate all of you for doing that,” she laughs. “But, seriously, why is it so important that I have a boyfriend?”
“Oh, you know your mother,” Jason says, putting his glass down on the floor. “She saw what Lucy and I had and then wanted that for all her children.”
Lucy playfully shoves him, kissing him as Anne and Sebby groan. “She just wants you to be happy, and to her and dad, happiness is marriage and a family.”
“Where am I going to meet someone if I go to work or here where they try to bring in non-single non-potential suitors?” she asks, looking over at Jeremy. “Sorry.”
He shrugs, not able to get a word in before Matthew starts, “What if you met someone at work like how Steph and I met?”
“Yeah because there are so many single men walking around the maternity ward,” she says, her phone buzzing in front of her. “What about you, though, Seb, how’s Collins?” Anne asks, changing the subject.
“Eh,” he shrugs, his eyes wandering to Anne’s phone screen, “I’m not sure we’re going to last to graduation.”
“What?” Lucy squeals, causing Jason to jump as she threw her legs out of his lap. “I thought you said she was ‘the one’?”
Sebby looks down at his glass, a stupid smirk on his face. “Nah, that changed. She doesn’t want me to go to law school in Boston, she wants me to stay here or move to California with her.”
“But the adventure of moving with your girlfriend to another state!” Matthew offers, Stephanie rolling her eyes.
“Matthew, not everyone needs adventure like you do, hon.”
Anne’s phone buzzes again, a reminder that she had a text waiting for her. Picking it up before Sebby can see who it is, ever the nosy little brother, she sees a message from Tyson popping up as they continue their conversation about Sebby’s love life and Anne’s lack thereof. . They had only been texting for a few days since their encounter at the hospital, but every time his name came up she couldn’t help but smile, lifting the wine glass to her lips to cover it in hopes of her siblings not noticing.
How’s your Christmas been so far?
A simple ‘eh’ as a response was all that she needed to send. It could be worse, but her mom trying to set her up with a guy with a girlfriend was definitely not something that made for a good Christmas. The only thing that could be worse is if their dad came home early from the flight he was on with a guy he picked up in whatever country he had to go to that prompted him to miss the holiday. Normal dads who had to travel would bring their kids back little trinkets or a postcard, but Anne wouldn’t put it past Tony to borderline kidnap someone from the plane he was flying and bring them home for Anne.
Tyson’s contact comes up again, an incoming call that prompted Anne to step away so she could answer it. “What’s up?”
“You said your Christmas was ‘eh.’ What’s going on?”
“It’s a long story,” she groans, pressing her back up against the fridge.
“Well, what if I have something that might make it better?” he flirts.
“Oh? Like what”
“What if I said I’m 100% free to buy you that coffee any time tomorrow, since I know you said you didn’t have work, and you can tell me about Christmas then?”
Anne hears her siblings laugh not ten feet away, praying that they couldn’t hear her conversation. Taking in a deep breath, she knew that her cheeks were turning pink at his words. “Sure, that sounds good. I’ll see you tomorrow?” she asks, walking back over to join her siblings.
“I’ll text you details,” he tells her, hanging up.
“Oh, my god,” Lucy yells, interrupting their conversation. “Anne was talking to a boy.”
“What the hell? What makes you think that?” she asks.
“Your cheeks are red," Lucy says, prompting Anne to raise her hand to feel the heat radiating from her face, "Who else would you be seeing tomorrow?” her sister eggs on, her eyebrow raised since she knew she was right.
Anne tries to find her words, unable to think of a name that wasn’t a guy's name to blurt out.
“Is it Tyson?” Sebby asks, Anne’s unlocked phone in his hand.
“You jackass!” she yells, lunging at her brother to try to get her phone back.
Teresa’s footsteps sound down the stairs, her poking her head between the gap in the stair rail and the steps themselves, Anne and Sebby looking like a deer in headlights when they see their mom. “I was coming to say that dinner was ready, but what’s going on here?”
“Anne has a boy she wasn’t telling us about,” Sebby blabs, earning an ‘I’ll kill you’ look from Anne.
“Oh! Annie!” their mom squeals, running down the stairs to pick her up off the ground and hug her. “Why didn’t you tell us about him?”
“I, uh,” Anne starts, still not sure what to say.
“You have to bring him to New Year’s Day at Uncle Vince’s house,” she tells her, the rest of the siblings following Anne being dragged back up the stairs for dinner, her mom announcing that Anne had a boyfriend when she, in fact, didn’t.
=============
December 26, 2021
“So, are you going to tell me why your Christmas was only ‘eh,’ or am I going to have to guess?” Tyson asks, setting down two cups of coffee in front of them. Tyson had asked Anne to meet him at a small coffee shop that was within walking distance of her apartment, thankful that she didn’t have to drive through Denver on the day where everyone was returning anything unwanted, like her Aunt Lisa returning one of the copies of the Agatha Christie novel that her and Sebby each got her.
Anne groans, the images of last night’s dinner flashing through her mind. “Can we talk about something else, first?”
“Fine,” Tyson says, taking a long sip of the coffee, “What did you get for gifts?”
She raises her eyebrow at him, Tyson mirroring her expression except with a goofy grin on his face. Rolling her eyes, she starts listing off the stuff she got: “My parents got me a new attachment for my KitchenAid stand mixer since my younger brother, Sebby, broke it last time he was over and a voucher for a flight anywhere in the country like they do every year, um, some gift cards from my aunts and uncles, my nieces all did their best attempts at drawing a portrait of me, Sebby told me he was going to come over and make dinner for me, which scares me because he can’t cook, Matthew and his wife got me some books they thought I would like, and Lucy and her husband got me this bracelet,” Anne tells him, extending her arm out to show him.
“I have so many questions,” Tyson starts.
“I might have answers,” Anne tells him, raising her cup to him.
“How big is your family?”
“I’m the third of four, Lucy and Matthew are twins and are about five years older than me, then Sebby is a year younger than me. Lucy has two daughters and Matthew has one. My dad has two brothers; one older, one younger. The older one has three kids, the younger has two and then three grandchildren.”
“Mom’s family?”
Anne looks down at her coffee. “I’m the only one who talks to anyone on that side of the family. My mom and her brother got into a fight when their parents died over what was left to them. My uncle has two daughters and two granddaughters.”
“I’m sorry,” he says, looking between the coffee and Anne.
She shrugs, not really bothered by it at this point. “It’s whatever. I talk to them because I want to, so it’s fine. What other questions do you have, though?”
“The ticket voucher?”
“Yeah,” Anne laughs, “Our dad is a pilot with Southwest Airlines, so every Christmas they give us a voucher to fly anywhere we want. They say they want to make sure that we take time for ourselves, but I think Dad gets some sort of bonus for every voucher he buys.”
Tyson throws his head back laughing. It wasn’t that funny, but seeing him so happy, Anne couldn’t help but smile back at him. “What about you, what did you get for Christmas?”
“My mom and sister flew down and basically restocked my kitchen for me.”
“Ok, that’s a great present, though,” she says. “Where was your dad?”
The smile from Tyson’s face fades, not looking up at Anne. “I never knew him. My mom and grandmother raised me.”
“Oh, Tyson,” she says, reaching out for his hand. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t know.”
He shrugs, a forced smile on his face. “I wouldn’t trade it for anything, I don’t think. My mom and my grandmother are the reason I am who I am. I wouldn’t give that up or change it.”
The two of them sit there, Anne trying to think about how many times she helped deliver a baby when the father was nowhere to be found. She normally figured they were busy or just not in the delivery room, not being there all together was something she couldn’t even begin to imagine. “But enough about me. Why was your Christmas ‘eh’?”
“My family has it in their heads that I need a boyfriend,” she admits, Tyson smirking at her words. “And my brother saw your texts coming up on my phone and being the asshole that he is, announced that I was texting a boy, so now, I need to find someone to bring with me to my uncle’s house on New Year’s Day that I can pass off as you.”
Tyson gives her a confused look. “Why wouldn’t you just bring me?”
Anne sits there, a shocked look on her face. “Because they think ‘Tyson’ is my boyfriend, and you aren’t?”
“So we pretend. They don’t need to know,” he shrugs, acting like it was no big deal.
“That would never work,” Anne dismisses him.
“Why not? You don’t think I’m a good actor?” Tyson whines, acting insulted at Anne’s words.
She scoffs, “Ok, one, hockey players are never good actors, and two, Sebby or Lucy are bound to figure out that you are not my boyfriend. Sebby wants to be a lawyer so he analyzes everything and Lucy is just this perfect anomaly of a human who would be bound to figure it out.”
“I think I can play your boyfriend for New Year’s Day,” he says, confidence dripping in his voice.
“No, I can’t have you do that.”
The maternity ward where Anne worked never ceased to be hectic, the miracle of life happening at least once an hour. No matter how much Anne had studied in nursing school, nothing could have prepared her for the stress that could come from thhe job, the long hours, the potential for something so right to turn so wrong in a minute, the way nothing can go planned since the baby dictated all, the mess that comes with every birth, or the joy that results from a former patient sending her the occasional picture of a baby she helped deliver as they’re growing up.

everything but you - Tyson Jost
hey, this is my piece for the winter fic exchange hosted by @antoineroussel and I've had so much fun participating in it! @toplinetommy this is for you! I hope you like it, it's a pleasure to dedicate this fic to you <3
pair: tyson jost x OC
word count: 3,3k
tw: cursing, heavy implication of sex
When Ava came back home from work, already thinking of taking a nap or getting herself a drink (maybe both), she was more than surprised that the door next to her apartment was wide open and that there were cardboard boxes behind it, labeled with handwritten notes such as "kitchen" or "bedroom". It's been months since the apartment has been abandoned by it's previous resident and she had to say that she liked it that way - quiet and peaceful.
"Thinking of stealing something?"
Ava quickly turned around at the sudden sound of someone's voice and her cheeks reddened with shame when she realized she was standing on the doorstep of this someone's new home, looking inside as if she wasn't inviding their privacy.
"Uh- no, sorry, I was just-" But there were no appropriate words on her mind so she just opened and closed her mouth a few times before actually taking this stranger in.
Ava's new neighbor was hot. Even without the hockey stick and gear in his arms she would easily guess that he was the sporty type of guy with all that muscle visible beneath his clothes. He had a nice face - the kind of face that would make her and probably a lot of others turn behind him on a street. The dark curly hair complemented his brown kind eyes and perfect nose.
And god, his cologne was one of the best scents she'd ever came across.
"That was a joke. I'm Tyson, by the way." He held out his hand and Ava shook it, admiring his soft yet firm grip.
"Ava. I live just next door and if I would be stealing, you would be the last person to notice."
"That's... disturbing but it's nice to meet you." Tyson's laughter was contagious and she couldn't help it but smile at the sight of it.
"Yeah, you too. See you around I guess." She was already walking away, shooting a polite smile at him over her shoulder when she stopped and turned around to face him. "Actually, I was just gonna make myself coffee, do you want some?"
Tyson gave her a look, then he eyed the things in his arms. He stepped into his apartment, laid the hockey gear and sticks on the ground and locked the door behind him before shooting her a bright smile in response.
"I'd like that very much." When Ava opened the door to her apartment Tyson walked in and (accidently or not) touched her arm with his as he was walking through the door frame where she was waiting for him to squeeze in her apartment so she could close the door behind the two of you. The air behind smelled frest and tangy.
"This is an interesting choice of color for a shoe rack." he stated as he took off his shoes and carefully put them there. Ava remembered buying it with her mum as a joke when she told her she was moving to Denver because of college. But now, the crazy neon pink reminded her of home.
"Since when are shoe racks supposed to be boring?" she objected, walking barefoot inside the kitchen, her new neighbor following her without saying anything.
"Milk?"
"Yes, thank you."
Ava wasn't a really talkative person - instead of being friends with people she had things to talk about, she preffered to befriend the ones with which she enjoyed the silence, not the awkward type but the soothing and pleasant one. Silence spoke in ways people never could.
And in this case, she liked the silence between her and this guy Tyson she met just minutes ago.
While Ava prepared the two cappuccinos, Tyson looked around her apartment, once in a while picking up some weird decoration in his hand before putting it back where it belonged.
She liked how her apartment looked - the multiple colors on the walls, cozy carpets, crazy paintings - but her favourites were the designer pieces she herself made sketches for.
"I like your couch." She heard Tyson's muffled voice from the living room. The sound was barely audible over the grinding of the coffee beans.
"Thanks. I made it."
"You're a... furniture maker?" His voice was getting closer and when Ava turned around, her eyes met his and she immediately looked back to her hands. Seeing a man in her home was an unfamiliar thing - in the two years she lived in Denver, there had never been a guy that would ever see this apartment, this part of her that made her feel vulnerable; as if Ava's home was an open book and anyone could read in it. She didn't like this feeling.
But Tyson was your new neighbor. Eventually, he would probably see it anyway so Ava tried not to make a big deal out of it.
She laughed for the first time then and he just watched her in silence.
"I'm not sure if it's even a close call but no, I'm not a furniture maker. I'm designer - you know, I design things. And you - let me guess -" she playfully put a finger to her lips so it would look like it was difficult to identify. "Are a hockey player?"
Tyson leaned against the counter, his body taking up so much space in the not-so-big kitchen that Ava felt like they were standing next to each other. Her gaze wandered to his thighs without really thinking about it, the muscles visible beneath the fabric of his gray sweatpants. Shit. She turned her eyes away and breathed in deeply, praying he didn't see her. It isn't a sin to look at a guy's thighs, Ava repeated to herself in her mind as she took one of the steaming coffee mugs and handed it to Tyson.
"Thanks, sorry about that. And yeah, I am. Was that so easy to tell?"
"You were literally out there standing with all that hockey... stuff."
"Oh, right, I forgot," he laughed, his cheeks and ears a bit red.
The two of them just stood there, sipping their coffee, occasionally saying something that could maybe count as small talk. And it was not awkward - Ava felt at peace and Tyson didn't look like he really minded the silence.
When he said it was late, she was a bit disappointed by the lack of his presence after he left. But he said he had enjoyed today and that he'd like to do this again sometime and Ava was immediately excited for that "sometime" to occur.
After two weeks of zero interaction, not even catching a glint of him in the shared halls, on the way home from work she decided to knock on his door. Just as Ava stepped into the building, she was greeted by the familiar beige walls, worn carpets and laughter. Usually, the apartment building was silent except for the occasional cries of a sleepless child or a loudly playing TV but the sound of someone laughing was new.
She didn't think much of it when the noise got louder with every step she took in the direction of Tyson's apartment. Ava realized only after she already knocked on his door and then the sudden silence felt palpable.
"Uh, hey Ava." Tyson said nervously, putting his hands into the pockets of his jeans. By answering the door, the barely audible beats of some song got louder and behind his shoulders she could make out the forms of at least another two people.
"You're being too loud." she blurted out. In her mind, she screamed at herself - what she wanted to say was supposed to be something like "just checking if you're still alive" or "I see your thighs look even better in jeans" but the people behind Tyson made her hesitate and now she must look like a total idiot. That type of old neighbor that yells at kids just because they are cheerfully playing on the street - except that Ava and Tyson were about the same age.
His eyebrows shot up but he managed to look guilty instead of laughing as he answered: "Right. We'll keep it down. Do you want to join us? Some of my teammates came over and we're having pizza and playing videogames-"
"No, that's fine. Have fun though." Ava interrupted him and quickly turned away, making the two unbelievably long steps to her apartment. What was wrong with her?
"Hey," Tyson grabbed her elbow but she wiggled out of his grip. His hand fell awkwardly back to his side. She watched, confused, as he quickly stepped away from her. "Was that why you came?"
Ava looked up, his eyes already locked on hers. There was another question hanging in the air and Tyson knew that saying it aloud might be a disaster so he left it unsaid but still visible in his gaze - Am I not the reason why you came?
"Yes. That's all." The door handle was digging into Ava's ribs and the pain reminded her to breathe normally, act normally; but god, it was so hard to act as if there was nothing between the two of them.
Tyson's face became colder than it had been seconds before, a hint of disappointment crossing his features before being replaced by a sad smile.
"If you think so. Good night then, Ava." Her name rolling off his tongue made her knees go weak and she was thankful for the door behind her for keeping her body upright.
"Good night, Tys."
He closed the door behind him, not even sparing her a one last glance. The sound of music was once again muffled - just a whisper in the back of Ava's mind. She thought that she heard beats of the next song but it was only her own stupid heart beating wildly in her ribcage.
With a sigh, she covered her face with her cold sweaty hands and slid down the door til she her body connected with the floor.
But no matter what, the world kept on spinning.
...
In the next few months all the two of the neighbors exchanged were forced smiles and pleasant but awkward "hey"s and "hello"s. No phone numbers or keys to the other's apartment. It was probably better that way, anyways.
Why was it bothering her so much? They weren't even friends. Or they were but only the formal type of friends, she wasn't really sure anymore. Tyson probably thought she was his grumpy and annoying neighbor, nothing more. And Ava couldn't stand his easy smiles and the way he acted like nothing ever happened (even though that might as well be the case); slowly but without a doubt, she learned to hate those little gestures she liked about him in the first place.
She also learned to ignore him entirely - for example she was doing so at the moment, not giving a fuck about the agressive sound of the buzzer echoing through her entire place. After five more minutes Ava breathed through her nose, clearly annoyed, and closed the book she was currently reading. She breathed in, pushed agressively the talk button down and yelled back at Tyson:
"What the fuck do you want, Jost?"
"I forgot my keys at the arena. Could you let me in?"
"Hell no."
"Fuck, you're so stubborn. Why are you even angry with me this time?"
"I don't know, it's probably just an old habit."
For a moment the only sound interrupting the silence was the cracking of the connection.
"I'll make it up to you, what do you say?"
Ava cought herself smiling at the buzzer and she listened to her racing heartbeat for some time before pushing down the button that would let her neighbor into the building.
There was no indication that Tyson did so until he (exactly four minutes later) knocked at her door. Ava answered it immediately, not realizing how out of breath she looked. Flushed cheeks, heaving chest, bright eyes. But he looked exactly the same.
"How will you make it up to me, huh?"
Ava didn't argue when he kissed her, hungrily and passionately, his body answering her question well enough. She imagined that moment many times in the dark, restless nights, her fingers and lonely moans her only companions. But this was real - the curly hair she was gently pulling, the touch of his his skin against hers, the knee parting her legs with some urgency.
She was falling and then she was lying on the couch, Tyson's body pressed agaist hers and in that moment she thought to herself: if this is not what heaven is going to look like, I don't want it. Her fingers were trembling with desire as she tugged at the hem of his shirt - he helped her get rid of it.
"What do you want me to do to make it up to you?" Tyson whispered, his voice deep and full of emotion. That itself made her back arch, feeling the pleasure she was denying herself for months.
"I want you to fuck me," Ava gasped out and Tyson moved his hand to gently tuck a stray strand of her dark hair behind her ear. "I want you to fuck me so hard I'll forget everything."
"Everything but me." he grinned at her and she leaned her forehead against his, his quickened breath chilling her burning cheeks.
"Everything but you." Ava repeated and kissed him, her mind getting lost in the whirl of emotions when Tys helped her out of the rest of her clothes. As his hands roamed over her body, making her a moaning mess, she knew she would do anything for him in that moment. She was his puppet.
But most importantly, she was fucked.
...
The next morning Tyson was still asleep when she woke up, her body stiff and tired, mind filled with memories of the previous night. Ava watched his face for some time, taking in his dark long lashes and the slightly parted lips, still a bit swollen.
If she could, she would run away - but it was her apartment, not his. And they were neighbors so it wouldn't be so easy to never see him again the way she did with all of her other one-nighters.
Ava found a temporary solution - she will make herself coffee and then think about all this mess. With a groan she got out of bed and her knees nearly gave out. It took her more time than usual to get herself to the kitchen but she used the counters as a support.
"'Thinking of stealing something?'" she quoated Tyson's first words to her when she noticed he was silently walking through her living room, clearly no longer asleep, his hair a curly mess, picking up random things and then putting them back down.
"'If I would be stealing, you would be the last person to notice.'" he grinned at her, answering with one of her own lines. His eyes were brighter than usual and his shoulder seemed more relaxed.
"Do you want some coffee?"
"Yeah. Thanks."
Ava deliberately ignored his presence filling up her kitchen and looked up only when Tyson joisted himself up on her countertop. He was wearing only his boxers and she stared at his body for a moment before taking two mugs from the cupboard.
"Hey, stop ignoring me, Ava."
She kept her eyes on the hot dark fluid dripping into the mugs.
"I'm not-" Tyson wrapped his hand around her waist but still left Ava some free space in the embrace. She felt his body tense behind her as if he was awaiting some kind of negative reaction from her, maybe expecting her to scream at him or something that kind of ridiculous.
"I really like you, you know. And I figured you liked me too-"
"Why on earth do you think I’m into you?"
"You always use that sweet nickname for me, remember?"
"'fucking idiot’ is not a sweet nickname, you know."
Tyson laughed and Ava smiled softly, leaning into his touch a bit more.
"And I want to take you out on a date, not just to fuck you on your couch." he continued, strenghtening his grip on her hips with confidence.
"Designer couch. Don't forget about that. You'll never fuck on another couch like this."
Ava turned around and handed Tyson the steaming cup of coffee. With a sigh he let go of her.
"Okay," she said, really thinking about his words. "I'm usually not a relationship type of girl but if the date you're promising me makes me forget about everything but you, then we can try to make this work."
...
It certainly did make her forget everything but him. Tyson really put an effort into that date, thinking through every little detail. Still, her favourite part of the night wasn't the pottery class they took (even though the pair of mugs in the shape of hearts they made looks rather lovely in her kitchen). It was the time they sat on the couch at his place, exhausted and smiling like idiots, making out and cuddling under a soft blanket with some funny sitcom playing in the background.
And it all faded into nothing when Ava looked at her neighbor, kissing the tip of his nose. The smell of his cologne itself made her feel safe and she secretly sniffed at his t-shirt a few times that evening.
"You were right." she stated suddenly.
"Of course I was. About what?" Ava jabbed him with her elbow, laughing.
"About the relationship thingy-thing. I want to try it. Fuck, I want it to work. I like this... cuddling or what is it called."
Tyson laughed with his lips pressed to her neck and the sound reverberated through her entire body.
"So... do you want to cuddle as a couple or what?"
Ava hummed in agreement and played with his fluffy hair for a moment before she breathed out:
"I'm just scared that it could end badly if it doesn't work out."
"You already hate me. How worse could it get?"
"I don't hate you. But," she raised a finger in the air, acting overly dramatic, "I hate how much I actually like your stupid ass."
Tyson leaned closer and gave Ava an annoyed look before he kissed her, his lips tasting like the sweet popcorn they were devouring in mouthfuls.
"I like your stupid ass too."
...
It was driving everyone crazy how private their relationship actually was. They didn't try to keep it a secret but they also never really told anyone that they were dating.
"Everyone probably already knows so why bother," was Tyson's justification and Ava couldn't help it but agree with him. She enjoyed their privacy and she might have been a little afraid that publicity could ruin the experience for her.
Even after months spent together, they never really moved in together - they just left pieces of themselves in the other's apartment. Like when Ava bought Tyson a brand new shoe reck, same as hers except for the color - this one was neon green. Or how he in return gave her an excessive number of blankets because there was no way he could lie on the couch next to her, not covered in at least three layers of them.
Ava was supportive - she came to every game of his she could manage to attend and secretly she enjoyed the silence that ruled over her place when Tyson left for road trips. But as he kept on filling up a bigger and bigger part of her heart, she realized she missed him sometimes, when there was noone keeping her warm and making her feel safe. Noone telling those bad and cringeworthy jokes she learned to adore. Noone to whom she'd rant about her day and who would actually listen to her.
Noone who would understand what she was saying even if she didn't say anything at all.
When he got back from the trips, he made it a tradition to bring her flowers and Ava didn't have the heart to tell him she hated colourful plants because she loved how lid up his face was when he'd hand them to her. She just kept on smiling an honest smile as she put them in a vase so they wouldn't fade as quickly.
"I love you." she whispered quietly when they lay in bed, her fingers playing with Tyson's curls. Ava though he was already sleeping but his eyes suddenly shot open and there was a silence between them she couldn't really put a name to.
"Thank god," he signed. "For a moment I thought I heard you saying "Tyson is the best person in the world" and I thought you were sick or something."
"You fucking idiot," Even with the frown on her face she couldn't help but laugh.
"Hey," Tyson said softly. "I love you two, of course."
There was a warm feeling inside of her body and she couldn't get enough of it.
Ava wanted to say something sarcastic in response but his eyelids drooped by then.
She tucked a stray curl of his hair behind his ear and kissed him softly on both of his eyelids.
I might hate a lot of things, she thought to herself then. I might hate everything. But there is no way I'll hate you. Everyone, everything but you.

Total Word Count: 10.1k
Just a small message: I wrote this using the holidays that my Chinese-Caucasian family celebrates and used traditions that are part of my family. I understand that each Chinese family celebrates the certain holiday differently or may not celebrate certain holidays. This is me sharing my culture and my traditions with hockeyblr and through my writing. I would like to emphasize, these are my experiences. If you, too, are Chinese, I understand you may celebrate differently. However, this is how my family and I celebrate. Majority of the stories that are shared in this are stories that have been passed on or told to me by/from my grandparents or great-grandparents. I am not trying to make fun of the Chinese culture, this is my way of sharing my experiences and putting it in writing. I apologize if this is not what you come to my blog for but this is what I chose to write and put on my blog. If you do not wish to see anything from this series, I will tag everything under ‘red envelopes dragon boats and mooncakes’. Please let me know what you thought! I would greatly appreciate it!
Warnings: There isn’t much climax here. It’s just a story full of fluff. That being said, the warnings are: eating meat (not sure if this counts but just want to add it in), being Chinese, being in a mixed family, and maybe a very, very small insinuation to sex, mentions of death, scissors (also not sure about this one).
Part One: Red Envelopes (Chinese New Year) February 12, 2021 @ 12 PM EST
Part Two: Dragon Boats (Dragon Boat Festival) February 19, 2021 @ 12 PM EST
Part Three: Mooncakes (Mid-Autumn Festival) February 26, 2021 @ 12 PM EST
Maybe some blurbs later on?

Title: Standing outside the fire, by Garth Brooks
*
“So, Chloe…”
“Well this is ominous,” she cut in dryly, raising a sharp eyebrow.
Tyson flushed heavily, huffing out a laugh, but she wasn’t going to apologise for interrupting. She’d been chopping vegetables for a stew – it was her turn to host and cook dinner – when Tyson started awkwardly hovering next to her, fingers picking at his nails in a way that silently showed her he had a lot on his mind. Chloe may only have known him for 9 weeks, and only been his girlfriend for one of those, but she knew him well enough to notice when he had something on his mind.
“I have to tell you something. Don’t get mad,” he said hesitantly.
I have to tell you something.
Don’t get mad.
That choice of words made her put down the knife she was holding next to the raw carrots, resting her hands flat on the counter to hide how they were trembling ever so slightly. He was not off to a great start. It didn’t help that this wasn’t the first boyfriend to say something like this to her.
I have to tell you something.
Don’t get mad.
The last time she heard those words, her two-year relationship ended. Her last relationship. Years ago, sure, but the words haunted her all the same. She never thought she’d hear them from Tyson. Surely he couldn’t have…
“What did you do?” she asked quietly.
She didn’t know if it was the question or her tone of voice, but his face immediately shifted into confusion, only making her swallow heavily.
“Was there someone else?” she asked, not daring to look at him.
She couldn’t. She couldn’t look at him. Couldn’t bear the thought of Tyson, sweet Tyson, being with someone else. But if that was her reality, she needed to know.
“What?” he choked.
“I mean we’ve only been together for a week, right? I promise not to get mad,” she said, forcing out a small sad smile.
Tyson seemed to freeze for a moment before groaned, closing his eyes briefly, but what confused her was the way his fists clenched.
“I swear to god, if I ever meet your ex-boyfriend, I’m going to punch him right in the throat,” he said darkly, eyes opening to stare at her.
What?
“Chloe, baby,” he said, shaking his head at her frown, “There isn’t anyone else. There hasn’t been anyone else. What I was trying to say is that my mom and my sister are coming down next weekend to stay for the first week of playoffs, and I lost track of time until my mom literally just texted me.”
Oh. Oh fuck.
“Shit, Tyson, I’m sorry,” she groaned.
Of all the things she could’ve accused him of. She should’ve trusted that he wasn’t like her ex. She should’ve known. How could she have-
“Woah, hey, take a deep breath for me.”
His soft voice broke her out of her spiralling thoughts, hands gently resting on her shoulders to ground her, and when her foggy mind cleared enough for her to take a shaky breath, her eyes stung with tears at the worried look on his face.
“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have accused you of cheating on me,” she managed to choke out, trying to keep her composure.
“Chloe, the only thing wrong with what you did was that you were resigned to it, not angry. You have nothing to say sorry for, okay?” he said sadly.
“I just…I…”
She trailed off, breaking away from his gentle hold to run a shaky hand through her hair. After all these years, a stupid simple sentence was enough to break her strictly-regulated poise. How pathetic was that? What was wrong with her?
“I’m not mad. I’m not even remotely annoyed. I’m just worried about you,” Tyson murmured.
“Brilliant,” she muttered, looking away from him as her eyes stung again with embarrassed tears.
A few beats of silence, before Tyson sighed.
“What can I do?” he asked.
She dared to look back at him, swallowing heavily at the soft expression he wore, eyes wide and honest and sad. If nothing else, that only filled her with more shame. Why did she have to jump to conclusions? How could she have possibly thought that Tyson would cheat on her?
“Rewind the last five minutes?” she suggested, attempting to smile.
Tyson’s genuine sweet smile in response settled a little anxiety in her chest, even more so as he shook his head.
“I’m sorry that you were ever made to feel this way. And I am sorry for the stupid way I started this conversation. Your shitty ex is not going to ruin this evening though, okay?” Tyson said softly.
Oh this sweet sweet boy. She sure as hell didn’t deserve him.
“Isn’t it already ruined?” she said quietly.
“Not as far as I’m concerned. We’ve still got a stew to finish and I want to tell you more about my family,” Tyson said, shaking his head.
Chloe huffed out a laugh, trying desperately to blink away her ridiculous tears. “Alright. If you’re sure.”
He just smiled even wider, finally earning a small smile from her in response. She would do better. She would have to do better. There was no way she wanted Tyson to ever see her that shaken up again.
*
Chloe spent the following week feeling like her intestines were in knots, the anxiety over meeting the two most important women in Tyson’s life building and building each day that passed. It didn’t help that her stupid assumptions, her insecurities, still played on her mind. She knew enough to call it trauma, even if she didn’t like thinking about the fact that her ex had so deeply affected her, but she also knew that she couldn’t let it continue to affect her relationship with Tyson. What they had between them…it was good. It was so good.
She still didn’t know what she’d done to deserve him.
Still, by the time Saturday came, the 30th of April, her nerves hadn’t dissipated. Tyson had tried his best to reassure her that everything would be fine, he also had playoffs to prepare for (starting on Monday 2nd May) as well as preparing for his family to visit. Chloe tried to help where she could, but there was honestly only so much she could do and still maintain her sanity.
Her ex had already known all of her family. She didn’t have any precedent to compare meeting Tyson’s mom and sister to.
At the very least, Chloe had decided to give Tyson a little space on the day that his mom and sister arrived. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to meet them – despite her internal worries – but she also knew how much he missed them. And she could only guess how much they missed him too. Instead, she suggested that she would come over for dinner. It was intimate enough to be special but still casual enough not to cause pressure.
She knew her limits, and Tyson respected them in turn.
That didn’t mean she hadn’t fretted about what to wear or bring with her or even how to greet them. All of this was so out of her comfort zone it wasn’t even funny, and if he was anyone else she would’ve absolutely cancelled or maybe even ghosted. But considering that it was Tyson…she couldn’t do that to him. And if she was being honest with herself, there was a part of her that didn’t want to end everything with him just because of this. He wanted her to meet his family – it was important to him to intertwine their lives.
That had to mean something, right?
To ease her nerves, Chloe decided on a plain black velvet dress – it was scoop-necked with long flowing sleeves and floated down to her knees, and while it may not have been anything exciting, it was comfortable and it looked good enough to make her look like she was making a little effort without trying too hard. Pairing her pin-straight white blonde hair with her usual silver jewellery for all her piercings, her usual smoky eye make-up and some simple black sneakers, she toned down her typical red lips for a grey-tinted lipgloss, giving herself enough confidence in her own appearance to leave the apartment on time.
On the drive to Tyson’s apartment, she also picked up a bottle of wine. It was the right thing to do, bringing something with her, right? She honestly had no idea what the appropriate etiquette was for meeting someone’s family, especially at the partner’s home, but she figured that wine was always a safe bet, and even though she wouldn’t be drinking because she was driving, maybe his mom would at least appreciate it? It was a long shot, she knew that much, but it felt wrong to turn up without something. She at least had to decide on something to stop herself overthinking, so a bottle of nice white chardonnay would have to do.
As for greeting them, Tyson took care of that himself.
“Chloe, baby, I’m glad you made it!”
Tyson’s happy declaration and following slow but firm kiss, as soon as he opened the door to her, took her by surprise.
“Let her breathe, dumbass.”
She winced slightly at the snicker sounding behind Tyson, pulling back quickly. Had she already made a bad impression? Fuck, what would they even think of her, kissing him without saying hello to them?
“As always Kace, you have impeccable timing.” Tyson huffed, wiping the lipgloss trace off his lips with a thumb.
There was something in the teasing tone of his voice that allowed Chloe to breathe a little. Okay, maybe not so bad so far. Breathe. She needed to just breathe.
“Guys, this is my girlfriend Chloe,” Tyson said, smiling between the two groups, “And Chloe, this is my mom and my sister Kacey.”
“Please, call me Laura,” his mom quickly said, smiling warmly.
So that was where Tyson got his smile from.
“It’s nice to meet you both. I’ve heard a lot about you,” Chloe said, as friendly as her nerves would allow her, hoping her smile wasn’t as awkward as she felt.
“Tyson hasn’t shut up about you at all. I love the vamp look,” Kacey grinned.
What?
Tyson grimaced as Chloe froze, but Kacey either didn’t notice or chose to barrel on through.
“Total boss ass bitch vibes. How did you get someone this hot to agree to date you, Tys?” Kacey finished, turning her head to send her brother an innocent smile.
Oh. Oh. Vamp look was a compliment. Alright, she could take that, especially if Kacey thought it was hot.
“I don’t know how, I ask myself that every day,” Tyson said simply, as he smiled down at her.
Ridiculous. But still…if he was being genuine, then so could she.
“You were sweet and endearing,” Chloe said, shrugging, “You weren’t scared of me even though I intimidated you, and I liked your smile.”
Tyson immediately flushed a deep red, Kacey hooting with laugh as their mom cooed, clutching her hands to her chest. Chloe just smiled to herself, glad to be able to speak the truth without it costing her any pride. It was the principle of the thing.
“You two are so sweet!”
Sweet. Hah. That was a first.
But Tyson just grinned at her, nudging her with his hip, so Chloe nudged him back. She could do this. She could so do this.
The four of them walked into the apartment properly, Tyson locking the front door before resting a hand on the small of Chloe’s back, the casual touch setting her butterflies going crazy. Just this little sign of gentle open affection in front of his family was overwhelming – she had no idea how she was going to cope for the rest of the evening.
“I didn’t know what we were doing about dinner, but I bought some wine for us anyway,” Chloe said, once they’d reached the kitchen.
“Chlo,” Tyson murmured softly, almost like a coo, making her shift uncomfortably.
“Oh Chloe that’s so sweet of you! I think we were going to just order in some food, so no-one had to be stuck cooking, but we can definitely put this in the fridge to chill for when it arrives?” his mom suggested.
All praise Laura Jost.
“That sounds good to me,” Chloe nodded, passing the wine over, “Thank you.”
“Someone has to be helpful, if Tys is going to be useless,” Kacey grinned.
“Rude,” he muttered, cheeks flaring with blush.
“Accurate,” Kacey snorted.
This dynamic explained a lot about how he reacted to her, it really did. It was kind of reassuring to see, if she was being honest, that she wasn’t a complete anomaly in his life.
It didn’t take long for them to order a multitude of dishes from Chloe and Tyson’s favourite Thai place, and by the time the four of them were sitting on the sofa with drinks while they waited for the food to arrive, Chloe’s nerves had melted away. His mom and sister were so genuinely friendly, asking her questions about herself and her life and how the two of them had met, all the while not pressuring or interrogating her in any way. It was easy to see how much they loved Tyson, and how much he loved them, and she felt almost honoured that she got to be apart of this moment. The more she got to know them, the more she appreciated Tyson for setting up the whole evening, knowing in her heart that she had been right to trust her instincts not to just run away.
She was meant to be here, right here, with Tyson and his family. And she was excited to explore what the feeling meant, even as much as it scared her.
Eventually, their dinner arrived, and they all moved to the dining table to eat, Chloe just staying silent with a pleased smile as Laura took the seat next to her, forcing Tyson to sit opposite with a surprised but pleased smile of his own. That was a good sign, right? The food was incredible as always, each of them trying a little bit of everything, reaching across each other to pick at the dishes, passing other dishes across each other, and talking and laughing above it all. It was all a bit of controlled chaos, if she had to put it into words, but it felt so natural and warm and welcoming, and Chloe couldn’t remember the last time she felt so comfortable around new people.
Probably when she’d first met Tyson 10 weeks ago.
All too soon it was time for Chloe to leave though. Tyson had tried to insist that it was fine if she stayed over that night, that his mom and sister wouldn’t care, but she refused, knowing that he had so little time with them during the season. It was important that they spent family time together, just the three of them, and to be honest the whole evening had been overwhelming enough, even if it had been positive.
Besides, she would see them for every game they were here – his mom and Kacey had made her promise. That was mind-blowing enough. What she had done to deserve them immediately warming to her, wanting to spend time with her, accepting her and Tyson…well, she had no idea.
But she did like it. She could admit that much.
“Let’s trade numbers! I’ll trade stories of Tys as a dumb kid for stories of him as a dumb kind-of-adult,” Kacey grinned.
“Hey!” Tyson protested.
Chloe just grinned. “Deal.”
“Hey!” he repeated, hands on hips.
Chloe couldn’t help but laugh herself as Kacey cackled, handing over her phone while Kacey gave her hers. This…was the last thing she was expecting. To have his mom and sister accept her so easily? No strings? Just like that?
Then again, considering how easy-going, and sweet, and accepting Tyson was, it shouldn’t really be a surprise that he learned it from two amazing women.
“There, done,” Kacey said, beaming as she handed her phone over.
The Best Jost (🔥💃🏻😎)
Chloe snickered at the name alongside the flame, dancing girl, and sunglasses face emojis, as Tyson looked over her shoulder, pouting at what he saw, quickly typing in her own number.
Chloe (🧛🏼♀️💋🖤)
Kacey grinned as she read her phone entry, laughing at the vampire, red kiss, and black heart emojis. It was good to have an in joke, right?
“Call me when you get home?” Tyson asked, taking her hands in his.
So affectionate and sweet in front of his family? It was almost too much. Especially as his mom sighed happily.
“I will?” she offered, trying not to be too awkward.
Tyson just grinned, almost as if he could read her thoughts. Well damn.
“I’ll walk you out to your car,” he said simply.
With a final round of hugs and promises to send lipstick recommendations, Chloe and Tyson left his apartment, Tyson threading his fingers through hers without hesitation. Mortifyingly, Chloe found herself blushing, blatant on her pale face, but Tyson either didn’t notice or politely didn’t mention it.
“So that went well,” Tyson said, smiling sweetly.
Chloe let out a sigh of relief. “It did, right?”
“I told you that you had nothing to worry about,” he grinned.
She immediately frowned. “They’re important to you, Tys. It was a legitimate concern.”
“To you maybe – but I knew as soon as they saw how much you adore me…”
Chloe’s scowl at his teasing words sent him cackling as they walked into the elevator, a family trait she’d noticed multiple times tonight.
“…and how much I completely adore you, that everything would be fine. They’re pretty protective of me, so I know that they like you already. Otherwise my mom wouldn’t have sat next to you while we were eating and Kacey definitely wouldn’t have given you her phone number.”
Well when he put it that way. Still, the little hesitant voice in the back of her head needed to be certain.
“Are you sure?” she asked hesitantly.
“Chlo, baby, I’m 100% positive. They think you’re amazing, just like I do.”
Damn her blushing cheeks.
“Okay I’m done,” she huffed.
Tyson just laughed, leaning down to kiss her softly. Chloe couldn’t help but sigh into his kiss, responding slowly and intently, only pulling away as the elevator slowed to a stop. Tyson just stared at her, a little misty-eyed and stunned, Chloe laughing softly as she tugged him gently out after her.
“Are you sure you don’t want to stay over?” he asked wistfully, guiding her to a stop and taking both hands in his.
“I’m sure. Enjoy your family time, okay? I’ll see you on Monday,” she said firmly.
As much as she wanted to absolutely go back upstairs with him, tonight was not the night.
“See you. And text me when you get home safe, don’t forget,” he said firmly.
“You’re ridiculous, Tyson Jost,” she said dryly.
Sweet, but ridiculous all the same.
He smiled that winning smile at her, giving her butterflies she was more than happy to deny existence of. “Only about you, Chloe Duncan.”

“A Mediterranean cruise?” Maddie says, her face scrunching incredulously although her parents can’t see her expression from the other end of the line.
“Yes! With stops in Italy, France, and Spain. Can you believe it?” her mother squeals.
“I’m sorry, I’m still just trying to wrap my head around the fact that you guys won a vacation… by watching Wheel of Fortune.”
“It was a giveaway – you know the ones where if the contestant wins, you could win – and they finally pulled our Spin ID!” Madeleine’s mother explains for what feels like the dozenth time since Maddie accepted their call. “But, there is some bad news.”
“You aren’t bringing your favorite child along with you?” Maddie sighs dramatically, before taking a sip of her coffee.
“You’re our only child, honey,” her dad chimes in from the background.
“Makes it easy to be the favorite then.”
“Well, yes, there’s only two tickets,” her mother says, the worry in her voice dragging out the sentence.
“Mom, I was just joking,” Madeleine huffs out a little laugh at her mother’s concern that she was seriously upset about not being able to go. “What’s the actual bad news?”
“It takes place at the end of December.”
This time, her mother’s confession did make Maddie place her coffee cup back down on the café table, her eyebrows furrowing at the implication.
“You mean, during Christmas?”
“Yes. I know that you wanted to visit, honey, and we want to see you and hear all about Colorado but… we couldn’t turn this down.” Madeleine can feel her heart softening with her mother’s gentle explanation.
“No, I totally get it. You guys deserve to have a vacation, especially one as awesome as this,” she replies, a smile forming on her face. “Besides, airplane tickets are expensive and I am a broke college student again.”
“Except you’re not a student,” her dad teases, his voice now coming through the phone clearer as he sits down next to her mom, the shifting of the fabric crackling through the phone.
“A broke college employee, then,” she quips back.
“Fair enough. Alright, Lanes, we gotta get going okay. But we’ll talk to you later, okay?”
The chime of the front door pulls Madeleine’s attention towards the sound to see Ashley walking into the café, her vintage briefcase pack slung over her shoulder.
“Sounds good,” Maddie says, lifting her hand to catch Ashley’s eye. The brunette responds to her wave with a nod, walking through the crowd towards her. “Ashley just got here so it’s a good time to say bye.”
“Ditching us for your cool new Colorado friends?”
“If I told you that it was Tyson, would you feel differently?”
The contrasting answers of her dad’s “no” and her mom’s “yes” has Madeleine breaking out into giggles.
“Well, we don’t have time to unpack all of that, so I’m going to hang up now. Love you, miss you, send me tons of pictures of Italy and Spain,” Maddie says.
“And France! Don’t forget France,” her mother calls out.
“How could we ever forget France?”
“Goodbye, sweetheart. Stay safe, have fun, and we’ll talk to you soon,” her father says.
The three of them finish uttering their goodbyes and Madeleine hits the disconnect button at almost the exact moment Ashley sits down across from her.
“What this I hear about France?” Ashley asks, taking a sip from her insulated water bottle, her expressive and inquisitive eyes landing on Madeleine.
“My parents are going on a Mediterranean cruise over the holidays,” Maddie explains. “Which unfortunately means that I will be alone on Christmas.”
“Nonsense, you can come over to mine. It’s just going to be me, Amber, and Dominic,” Ashley says, referencing her partner and their adorable three-year old son.
“Are you sure?”
“Positive. No one should spend the holiday alone.”
*~*~*~*~*
*~*~*~*~*
*~*~*~*~*
*~*~*~*~*
Four months.
In approximately 5 and a half hours, it would’ve been four months since Madeleine packed her bags and moved out of the country that she had previously called home, leaving so many memories behind.
And that was the best decision she’s ever made. She had a great job, a great apartment, great friends. She had never been happier. And, of course, there was Tyson.
Tyson, who told her about all the best restaurants in the Denver area. Tyson, who added her to his family ticket list so she could see the Avs play any time she wanted. Tyson, who sent her weird memes and random texts while he was on the road. Tyson, who somehow managed to make time for her despite his hectic schedule. Tyson, who invited her as a plus-one to almost every team event.
Like tonight.
Madeleine stops staring out the passenger window to look towards her best friend, his hands on the steering wheel, the streetlights illuminating his profile.
“Hey, thanks for this,” she says, her voice soft.
“You’re always my plus-one Maddie,” Tyson laughs. “Besides, I think that if I didn’t bring you, I’d get an earful about if from Gabe and Mel. They seem to like you more than they like me.”
“Maybe that’s because I’m so much more responsible than you are,” Maddie teases.
“So, I can’t tell them about that one summer in high school where you - ”
“If you finish that sentence, we can’t be friends anymore.”
“We’re friends because I can finish that sentence.”
“And we pinky promised to never talk about that again,” Madeleine quips back. Tyson glances over at her and she can see that boyish sparkle in his eyes, one that was surely reflected in hers.
“You know I’d never break a pinky promise.”
“You were dangerously close.”
Tyson just chuckles, a soft shake of his head as he turns into Gabe’s neighborhood. Madeleine looks out the window again and sees the cars already lining the Landeskog’s lengthy driveway. After somehow managing to parallel park, Tyson hops out and walks around to opening the door for Madeleine. She easily takes his hand, exiting from the car and moving to tug at the hem of her black dress.
“I’m not overdressed, right?” she asks, her blue eyes darting to Tyson. She watches as Tyson’s eyes trail down her body, taking in her outfit for the second time that night.
“You look great,” Tyson says. “And if you are overdressed, it just means you’ll be the best dressed here.”
His encouraging compliment makes her blush, a soft smile appearing on her lips. Tyson returns her grin before he leading her up the driveway and to the Landeskog’s front door.
The party seems to be in full swing when Tyson opens the door, the sound of music and chatter hitting Madeleine’s eardrums. She lets Tyson take her grey trench coat from her as she walks deeper into the house, her boots tapping on the hardwood floor. She rounds the corner into Gabe’s expansive living room, her eyes scanning over the crowd of faces. Before she can even decide who to greet first, a squeal of her name from across the room calls her attention.
“MADELEINE!!!”
Maddie barely has time to turn before Sydney is crashing into her, pulling her into a tight hug.
“I’m so happy you’re here. Is Tyson with you?”
“Right here,” Tyson’s voice sounds behind Maddie. Both her and Sydney turn to see him wandering into the room.
“Perfect. Can you go talk to your boyfriend? He’s driving me crazy.”
Tyson just responds to Sydney’s exasperation with a laugh before he disappears into the crowd to find his ginger best friend.
“What’s JT doing now?” Maddie asks.
“Nothing,” Sydney replies, hooking her arm in Madeleine’s. “It’s just easier to steal you away from your boyfriend by distracting him with mine.”
“I’ve told you before; Tyson isn’t my boyfriend.”
“Yeah, yeah, I know. I just didn’t want him hovering over you the entire night – which he would have!” Sydney says, pulling Madeleine into the kitchen. “Boy needs to learn that separation is healthy.”
“We hadn’t seen each other for five entire years before we reconnected. I think we can handle being separated at a party for five hours.”
“We’ll see about that. Now red or white wine?”
Once a full cup of red wine is securely placed in Madeleine’s hand, Sydney brings her back into the main room, the two of them finding a free space on the couch to squeeze into. They spend a few minutes there, catching each other up on their respective lives – Syndey about her holiday break and Maddie about her dread concerning the upcoming semester and the workload it brings to her job.
Eventually, Sydney gets pulled into another conversation and Maddie takes the opportunity to get up and wander around the party. She waves hello to a few people, briefly talks to Andre, asking him how he was settling in, before getting roped into a game of pool with Nate and Mikko – a matchup which she miserably fails at. She departs from the table with the excuse of needing to get a consolatory drink. When she wanders back into the living room with a freshly refilled glass in her hand, her eyes take in the scene in front of her.
Even in the hubbub and the chaos of dozens of bodies and voices, a sense of calm falls over her. There was still a part of her that couldn’t believe this was her life. Here she was, in an expensive house surrounded by people who made more money than she could ever hope to, and these faces that used to be strangers were now people she considered to be her friends.
And it was all thanks to Tyson.
She looks around, trying to locate him amongst the crowd of people, her ears pricked for the sound of his laugh. It takes a few moments before her eyes land on his frame; tucked against a wall and having a conversation with Cale. She starts to walk over to them, weaving her way through the crowd but by the time she gets to the opposite end of the room, Cale had vanished.
“Hey, Tys,” Maddie says, walking those last few steps towards him. “Where’s Cale?”
“Oh, he just went to get a drink, I think,” Tyson replies, his body slouched against the wall. Madeleine steps next to him, her body mirroring his as she takes a sip of her wine.
“What were you guys talking about?”
“Nothing really. Just wanted to ask me a question.”
The natural follow-up to that statement was to ask what the question was. But there was something in Tyson’s clipped words and tone that warned Madeliene to not pull on that thread. So, she didn’t.
“I need to perfect my pool skills,” she laughs, turning the conversation to a new topic. “I can’t keep embarrassing myself in front of your friends every time a pool cue is shoved into my hands.” A small rush of relief flows through her when she sees Tyson visibly relax, that crooked grin appearing on his lips.
“Who’d you lose to this time?”
“Nate. And Mikko.”
“Well, playing against Nate was your first mistake. That man takes everything way too seriously. You never stood a chance,” Tyson jokes, poking fun at his teammate.
“Did you ever find JT?”
“Yeah. Don’t know what Sydney was complaining about. He seemed fine.”
“She actually just wanted to steal me away from you.”
“She’s gonna have to try harder than that.”
It is ridiculous at how fast the butterflies form in Madeleine’s stomach at his words, at the way he looks down at her with a gentle smile playing at his lips. She just takes another sip of from her wine glass, hoping that if Tyson decides to chirp her about the blush in her cheeks, she can blame it on the alcohol.
She glances back at Tyson, ready to breeze over… whatever that moment was. But before she could utter a single syllable, she hears her name being called from across the room.
“Madeleine!” Sydney’s voice raises above the din and Madeleine looks over the crowd to see the blonde waving her over to the bar, JT by her side.
“Speak of the devil,” Tyson chuckles, taking another swig of his beer. Madeleine just shoots him a small apologetic smile before pushing herself off the wall and making her way to Sydney.
Turns out Sydney just wanted her help convincing JT that Italy was the better vacation spot for their summer getaway instead of Barbados. The pictures conveniently stored on Madeliene’s phone were a good bargaining chip, along with the glowing testimonials from her parents about the coastal towns – information that Sydney knew Madeleine had, hence the summoning.
“I feel like I’m being ganged up on,” JT jokes, smiling at his girlfriend.
“We are just providing actual proof from people we know and trust, not random strangers on the internet.”
“Well, in that case, let me find Burky. I think he went to Barbados once.”
“No! That’s not fair,” Sydney protests, quickly grabbing her boyfriend’s arm.
“How so?”
“Because I’m your girlfriend and you have to agree with me. Those are just the rules.” Sydney’s elbow moves to jostle Madeleine. “Tell him, Maddie.”
“Sorry, I’m with JT on this one. We presented our evidence, now it’s only reasonable that he presents his.”
“Thank you, Madeleine,” JT laughs before turning a satisfied smirk towards Sydney.
“You’re supposed to be on my side,” Sydney whines, the sentence directed to both Madeleine and JT before she turns her full attention to her boyfriend.
Madeleine just shakes her head, a smile on her face as she puts her phone back in her purse. With a sigh, she rests her elbows against the marble countertop, looking out over the crowd as Syd and JT carry on their playful argument next to her. Another sip of red wine moves down her throat, the pleasant buzz settling in her sternum, before her eyes look up and connect with the baby blue eyes of Cale making his way towards her. She smiles at him, one that he returns, his usually rosy cheeks growing a shade redder. Madeleine chalks it up to alcohol as Cale appears directly in front of her.
“Hey, Madeleine,” Cale says, moving to stand next to her by the island.
“Hey, Cale. How you doing?”
“Pretty good. You?”
“Good. Party is fun,” Madeleine replies, her eyes dancing down Cale’s frame. It might have been her years of constantly observing people that made it easy for her to read body language, but it wouldn’t take an expert to notice that Cale Makar was nervous.
His shoulders were stiff, his arms crossed in front of him, a beer bottle hanging from his hand. And while he was trying to appear casual by leaning his body against the marble countertop, he seemed like he was trying a little too hard. Madeleine just listens to him talk, a bemused smile playing on her lips.
“Yeah, Mel usually does a good job with these kinds of get-togethers.”
“I’m sure she does.”
“Yeah. I mean Gabe helps out but it’s really all Mel,” Cale continues, the words a little stuttered.
“Cale,” Madeleine says, her voice a little sharper, the tone of it calling Cale’s eyes to connect with her. “What are you doing?”
“What?”
“Are you actually trying to regale me with Mel’s party planning or did you come here for something other reason or are you just drunk and can’t think of anything else to talk about?” she teases, watching the flush on Cale’s cheeks once again darken. “Any of which are perfectly fine options. It is a party after all.”
“Yeah, right,” Cale says, his free hand coming up to rub the back of his neck. “I – um – did actually come over to ask you something.”
“Okay,” Madeleine replies, fully facing Cale. “Shoot.”
The deep inhale that Cale makes is noticeable, his chest rising with the action. His eyes close as he gathers his thoughts before turning his body completely to Maddie, his gaze locking with hers.
“Will you go on a date with me?”
“What?” Madeleine asks, the words hitting her unexpectedly, her smile slightly faltering as she takes in his request.
“Do you want to go on a date with me?” Cale reiterates, his blue eyes wide and earnest. His question finally fully registers and her immediate response is a grin tugging at the corner of her lips.
“I would love to go on a date with you, Cale.”
“Really?” Cale asks, making damn sure he was hearing correctly.
His need for reassurance makes her laugh, the smile growing. Madeleine doesn’t hesitate to put her drink down on the island before throwing her arms around Cale. The hug catches him off-guard but it isn’t long until his arms are wrapping around her tighter, holding her close. She finally pulls away, her blonde hair tickling her cheeks.
“Yes, Cale. Really,” she restates. Her response makes Cale visibly relax, his own excited smile appearing on his face. There is a brief pause before Cale pulls her into another quick hug.
“Hey, you two,” a feminine voice sounds from behind Madeleine which causes Cale and her to break their hug, Maddie turning back to Sydney. “Are you coming into the living room for the ball drop?”
“Yeah, we’ll be there,” Madeleine replies, her smile not waning from her face. Sydney rolls her eyes as she takes JT’s hand, pulling him away from the kitchen. Before they completely disappear around the corner, JT shoots Cale a thumbs up. The gesture causes Maddie to turn around to face Cale, one eyebrow raised in question.
“Some of the guys may have been hyping me up earlier tonight.”
“That’s pretty damn adorable, Cale,” Madeleine replies before cocking her head towards the living room. “Shall we?”
Cale happily follows her in, the room already packed with almost the entire guest list. They two of them squish themselves into one of the back corners, the Time’s Square Rocking New Years broadcast displayed on the flat screen hanging above the fireplace.
The minute countdown begins, a cheer going up from the living room. The lingering conversation slowly dwindles as the clock does; the voices that were previously speaking about anything else now joining into the countdown. Madeleine eagerly joins in, the rumble of Cale’s deep timbre right beside her.
“Five… Four… Three… Two… One… HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!”
The hurrah is almost deafening as everyone raises their glasses. Madeleine takes in the celebration around her, smiling at the multitude of couples kissing, starting the New Year with their loved ones by their side. A small chuckle escapes her as she sees EJ lean in to place a smooch on Gabe’s cheek after the two of them pull away from their respective partners.
Madeleine is content to kiss the edge of her wine glass and take another sip of alcohol, a celebration similar to most of the other single guests. But she is slightly caught off guard when she feels an arm loop around her waist, gently pulling her into a strong frame before she feels the sensation of a kiss being pressed onto the top of her hair.
Her head turns, that broad smile on her lips as she looks up at Cale, her blue eyes sparkling in delight.
“You know, for someone who needed hype-men and liquid courage to ask me out earlier tonight, you seem pretty comfortable now,” she chirps.
“Eh, I can blame all that liquid courage,” Cale shrugs, a teasing smirk on his lips. Maddie can’t help the giggles that fall from her lips at his 180-degree attitude change before relaxing into Cale’s hold, her back leaning against his chest.
The mere possibility that her saying yes to his request for a date was the reason for his newfound confidence warmed her from the inside out. Which was good because in the back of her mind, she had noticed a small chill enter the room.
The sound of a loud splash echoes in from outside, almost everyone’s attention turning to the open back door. Curiosity takes a hold of the party, guests pushing into the backyard. Madeleine is among the first few to make walk out onto the porch.
The water of the Landeskog’s outdoor pool is still rippling, the dark shape of a body under the water unrecognizable until the person breaks the surface. Madeleine shakes her head the instant she recognizes the face.
“What are you doing, Tyson?” she laughs, walking closer to the pool’s edge, her boots lightly splashing in the puddles on the concrete from Tyson’s cannonball.
“Going for a swim,” Tyson replies with a shrug of his shoulders.
“In the middle of winter?”
“Pool’s heated.”
Madeleine just laughs again, shaking her head at her best friend’s antics. Her eyes are bright and her cheeks hurt from smiling when her gaze reconnects with Tyson’s, a similar expression painted on his face.
“Care to join me?” he asks, one arm beckoning to the open expanse of the water.
“You’re crazy, Josty.”
“And you love me for it.”
If Madeleine hadn’t been distracted by the action of zipping off her boots and if her mind was cleared of the halo that the previous glasses of wine provided, perhaps she would have heard the weight behind Tyson’s words: that soft and subtle plea. A silent question that was begging for the answer ‘of course I do’ to fall from Madeleine’s lips.
But when Madeleine takes a few steps back before take a running leap into the pool, her body swimming up next to Tyson’s, it seems approval enough. If not for Tyson, then for the other guests to follow their lead, the heated water filling with bodies.
Maddie swims up to Tyson, her arms reaching out to him. Tyson easily extends his reach, his own arms taking a hold of her waist, supporting her as hers rest on his shoulders as they both tread water. Madeleine looks around, loving the smiling faces around her before she looks back to Tyson. He is staring at her, his lips curled in a small smile.
“Still think you’re the responsible one out of the two of us? Convincing everyone to jump in the pool?” Tyson jokes, referencing their previous conversation in the car.
“I think that statement is still accurate,” Madeleine quips. She can see Tyson’s eyebrow raise in question, silently demanding an explanation. “When it was just you in here, people thought you were being weird. When I jumped in, they realized what an amazing idea it was.”
The laughter that falls from Tyson is intoxicating, warming Madeleine more than the heated water ever could, as he directs his brown eyes back to her.
“So, you’re saying that I need you to make my wild ideas seem logical?”
“You always need me Josty,” she teases. “But I also need you. That’s what being friends means, right?”
His smile stumbles, the downturn of his lips so fast and subtle. It was a falter that anyone else could easily miss, but not Madeleine.
“Right,” Tyson replies, his voice twinged with melancholy. Madeleine is about to ask what was wrong but before she can speak, Tyson’s blinding grin is back, his eyes holding no trace of sadness. “Happy New Year, Maddie.”
The change in his demeanor is so drastic that Madeleine convinces herself that she must have imagined it.
“Happy New Year, Tys,” she replies before turning her head back to crowd of people splashing around her.
The joy and laughter from everyone’s lips fills the quiet night, the hope of a new year thrumming through the air. But in her reminiscing, Madeleine misses the subtle flex of her best friend’s hands on her waist.
As if he never wanted to lose her.
As if he was afraid that he already did.

36 with Tyson and Flick, please!
36. things you said but didn’t mean – tyson & flick
It had all happened so quickly that Flick barely remembered saying anything at all. Her entire day had been a mess with a broken hot water heater to start off the day, an unexpectedly tough therapy session and then the notification that her flight back to Vancouver had been cancelled.
Somehow, she hadn’t broken down in tears, her deep breathing exercises coming in handy, yet she was very on edge and was expecting a breakdown at any moment.
Even Tyson hadn’t been able to soothe her, when she came back into the apartment and, uncharacteristically, slammed the door shut behind her.
And, just like that, Tyson’s overexuberance, his positivity, was too much for Flick to bare.
“Would you just shut up for two seconds? Why are you always on? I just want to be fucking sad.”
Tyson froze in front of her, his gaze lowering as his eyebrows pulled together. Flick only felt worse.
He nodded with his mouth firmly closed and his shoulders sagged as he walked away from her. Her instinct was to follow him, reaching out for his hand before he was too far gone.
“I’m so sorry, Tys. I didn’t mean that.”
“Don’t know why else you would have said it.”
The only answer Flick had was that she was sad and a little bit angry and there wasn’t any real reason at all other than she had wanted quiet. Asking for quiet hadn’t been an issue before, Tyson more than happy to settle down and let Flick wallow for a little—it was why she was so surprised by her own.
Despite his morose expression, he didn’t put up a fight when Flick stepped cautiously towards him and wrapped her arms around his shoulders to whisper more apologies and assurances in his ear. The assurances quickly swapped over, though, Tyson opting for a more neutral but comforting approach than his early attempt at seeing the good in everything.

hi! it’s your winter fic exchange anon here! :)
i wanted to touch base with you before i begin writing!
1. Do you have a particular player you'd like me to write about from your list, or are you open to any of them? Is there one player you're particularly interested in at the moment? Here’s your list of players as a refresher (Erik Johnson, Tyson Jost, JT Compher, Nathan Mackinnon, Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, Tyler Seguin)
2. You mentioned that you’re interested in fluff, smut (18+ only), alternate universe, reader insert or oc. I'd love to know if you have a particular preference for any of these six options. If you're interested in an alternate universe, is there a specific one that you'd enjoy?
3. What pronouns do you prefer for the fic?
4. Would you prefer your fic to have a holiday theme or not?
5. Are there any topics that you prefer NOT to be in your fic?
6. Is there anything I didn't ask about that you think is important for me to know?
i’m so so so excited to write for you and i can’t wait to see your answers!!
Hi!!! This is so cool!!! I'm so happy that you're excited to write for me!!! I can't wait to start my own fic and to read the one you're writing for me. I know I'll love it. The player I would like you to write for is Auston Matthews. The fic can totally have a holiday theme and if you can write it as friends to lovers, that would be great. The pronouns you can use are she/her and if you want to do it with an original character that's fine, but a reader insert works, too. However it flows for you, I'll be fine with either one.
Thank you so much for reaching out and for writing this fic for me!!! Have a wonderful holiday season 💚🤍❤️💙🩷💗💓💘💕🎄🌲🎁🎅

It's your friendly pinch hitting summer exchange fic writer. I wanted to let you know I'm well on my way with your fic, and just wanted to confirm that 1) Tyson Jost is okay. 2) an OC is preferred. And 3) a happy ending? I can't imagine an angsty bad ending with Tyson - that would probably break my heart 💔
But I have an open weekend, so plan on getting this out for you as soon as possible. 💙
Omg I’m already so excited to read it!! Yes I love me some josty, that sounds great. And OC is totally good! I tend to write that way too. And very agreed, sad Tyson would break my heart. Looking forward to seeing what you rustle up!

The ABBA Series
From my love for ABBA comes my collection of stories based around some of my favourite songs. These fics will be posted approximately January 2023
Each story is an OC and they all occur in the same universe, so characters can and will cross between stories. However, each story can also be read individually.
Please let me know if you would like to be tagged in these!! I’ll probably make a google forms or something for this to make it easier
(*) indicates smut
Money Money Money - Tyson Jost - coming soon
Sabine Sabitzer never intended to be the centre of attention, in her mind at least. She dressed like everyone else, she did her hair like everyone else, she watched sports like everyone else. But the money her father had wasn’t like everyone else.
Tyson Jost never was the centre of attention, unless his favourite alternate captain have given him a few too many shots on a night out, but his unruly curls always got some attention from the ladies.
One fateful night, the two meet at a ball neither wants to be at. What happens when the pair escape out the back door?
Dancing Queen - Mathew Barzal - coming soon
Mat loved to party. Heading out after a big win to one of New York’s best clubs was his favourite way to relax. He’d order a few drinks, dance with a few girls, and pick one to take home. On the unlucky night he wasn’t able to take one home, he’d wingman one of his teammates, usually Tito.
Jade hated partying. She reluctantly went along with her friends to clubs and tried her best to enjoy the awkwardness of random people dancing on her and people drinking way too much alcohol. She was never one to take someone to bed after knowing them for a few minutes.
When Rosa drags Jade along to her not-boyfriend’s party and she catches Mat’s eye, maybe her hatred for clubs will change.
Gimme, Gimme, Gimme - Cale Makar - coming soon
Erik Johnson wasn’t shy about letting all the Avalanche players know that his sister was moving to Denver. He assumed they’d all take over the older brother status that he had over Leona. He also made sure that everyone knew she was off limits.
Leona struggled making friends with anyone not associated with the hockey team. She tried at work, but no one seemed to have similar interests as her.
The team are out clubbing one night and Leona might be drunk, but she still knows what she’s saying to Devon. That she likes Cale a little more than the way that friends do. Cale overhears and can’t believe his feelings are reciprocated. But her brother is the veteran defenceman for his team.
What happens when Erik finds out about the little crush both of them hold?
Voulez Vouz - Anthony Beauvillier (*) - coming soon
Growing up with a hockey player as a best friend meant making sacrifices and Rosa knew all about that. Early morning practice, Saturday and Sunday games, injuries. She was there for it all.
Anthony treasured having Rosa in his life, she was always his rock and that didn’t change when he moved to New York to play in the big leagues, she was still there. Just virtually for the first three.
When Rosa snaps up a job in the Big Apple and spends more time with Anthony, what becomes of their friendship?
Does Your Mother Know - Matthew Tkachuk (*) - coming soon
Sneaking out to see your summer hook up is fun when you’re 18. But it’s just god damn awkward sneaking out when Keith and Chantal are keeping a watchful eye over everything. Chantal spots the marks that litter Matthew’s collarbones and wonders who he’s heading out to see all the time.
It’s not like Jenna wasn’t taking risks either. She’d had a crush on Matthew since they were 15 and everyone was playing in her pool. He took his shirt off and she was really thankful that he had started going to the gym. And Matthew wasn’t small to hide at all, so when her parents stuck their heads in to check she was all good during the night, she had to pretend that it was someone else.
Eventually, the sneaking around gets to them and one parents spots them. But who was it and what will their reaction be?
Take a Chance on Me - Trent Frederic (*) - coming soon
Sierra never trusted hockey players. Not after her older sister had her heart broken by one to many. Not after she watched her brother have women going in and out of his room like a revolving door. So when she met Jack and his friends, she never expected anything to go further than just friends.
Trent’s eyes looked up and down Sierra’s body when she first entered the room wearing a bodycon dress that hugged her body in all the right places. He couldn’t take his eyes off her.
After a night out in Boston, Sierra wakes up in an unfamiliar bed, in an unfamiliar apartment with an unfamiliar view. Glancing over, she saw Trent’s hair resting on the pillow. Without a second thought, she grabs her stuff and leaves Trent.
When Jack confronts both of them asking why they refuse to be seen with each other, maybe something will change.
Lay All Your Love on Me - Colton Parayko (*) - coming soon
Colton knew he had to stop. But she was just too enticing. Autumn was his perfect girl, aside from the six year age gap. He wanted to settle down with someone, get married, maybe have a few babies.
Autumn had just graduated from college and was trying to find her feet in St Louis. She liked seeing Colton, but just as a hook up.
When Colton gets her tickets to a Blues home game in the WAG suite, she feels out of place but the other girls welcome her as one of their own. How does she explain she’s nothing more than just a placeholder for Colton and how does he respond?
