On April 27, 1791, Samuel Morse was born. Morse developed in the 1830s what became known as Morse Code, the primary language used in the transmission of messages using an electric telegraph machine.
The telegraph, using Morse Code, is intimately tied to the development of Sacramento starting in the 1850s. In 1854, the Alta Telegraph Company built a telegraph line between Sacramento and Nevada City. Other lines started to connect Sacramento to other cities in California. On October 24, 1861, the first transcontinental telegraph message was transmitted to Sacramento, ending the Pony Express overland mail service two days later. California was finally able to receive news from the east coast within hours rather than 10 days by the Pony Express.
Construction of the transcontinental telegraph line began July 4, 1861 in Missouri. The nearly $500,000 project was largely made possible by the passing of the Telegraph Act of 1860. The telegraph made Sacramento the hub for communication between California and the eastern United States. California newspapers became more up to date on national news as well.
For today, Jared typeset SACRAMENTO in 36 point Cheltenham Bold Italic font. Luckily, the typecase had enough dashes and periods. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press.

QUNZ - Lego Typeface
Since 2016, Dutch printmaker and educator Martijn van der Blom (b. 1973) has been working on designing a Lego typeface he calls QUNZ. He states:
I approach letters as a form of architecture, each letter is like a building. . . . I decided to give QUNZ a more open and playful character, This created space to fine creative solutions to thick and thin lines, diagonals and serifs.
Van der Blom designs while printing and most of his visual research happens in the printing process. He explicitly leaves room to design with the opportunities that present themselves in the act of printing. One result of this way of working is that certain compositions are not taken apart. Elements that have proven themselves are preserved:
I don't break down the compositions anymore. I leave them intact and store them in a dedicated typecase, just like all the other type in the studio.
The letterforms shown here from the second edition of Print & Play The Art of LEGO Letterpress by van der Blom and visual artist Roy Scholten, published in Dutch and English in Hilversum, Netherlands at tacit.studio in a limited edition 250 copies in 2024. Martijn van der Blom and Roy Scholten have been working with LEGO bricks as printmaking material in Grafisch Atelier Hilversum (a printmaking studio in Hilversum, The Netherlands) since 2013.

strongly typed languages scare me so much T-T what are you doing with that!!! types are just suggestions based on whats going on in memory. i'll typecast an int to a char, i'll typecase a long into a poiSEGMENTATION FAULT. CORE DUMPED
See, I really enjoy it when (a) my code works and (b) there's a funny little puzzle to solve, so strong type systems make me cream my pants 😌

the mcu movies are the biggest stain on zendaya's career. it wouldn't be an issue if it was just one movie, but it was dragged across 5 years. that meant for 5 years straight, people with no real knowledge of her acting watched her play an underwritten edgy teenager with minimal lines and little to do. then euphoria comes & she plays another teenager, but the public is already tired because of the mcu's oversaturation. now she gets typecasting allegations that are hard to come back from.
Ah yes, being in a billion dollar movie with a bunch of other legit movie people was such a stain on her career.
I'm sorry but this argument is tired.
Typecasing allegations that are hard to come back from? Because Rue and Chani are so similar?
Also on what planet is being in 5-6 movies over the course of 7-8 years over saturation? If people are oversaturated by her being in less than one movie a year that is more on them.
I'd also generally add that even in Homecoming, where she barely had anything to do, the actual critics were singling her out as one of the best parts of the film. The critics have always been on her side from day one.
I don't expect everyone to love her or her acting, but on stan twitter I don't take people saying oh no she can't act all that seriously because most of the time it's coming from 1) incels, 2) racist incels though that was probably a given or 3) stans of other actors who think it's a game where you can only be overzealous about one or two people and everyone else is competition and 4) super pretentious people who will always be stuck on her as a Disney kid. To the latter I saw one person complain that she delivered her lines too Disney in Dune. Which that's the kind of criticism I immediately dismiss because it's more based in their own mind than anything real.

Guess who has her super cute keyboard case for her iPad?! ME! That means “Against the world around us” will be updated soon!
I got the rose gold typecase edge and so far it works great and I basically turned my iPad into a laptop! The case isn’t bulky either and it feels like great quality which it should be considering it was $139.99.

I have made a small start on extracting some type from an ancient, filthy, horrible old typecase. This appears to be Bodoni Poster, now that I've gotten it out from under the layers of dust, fossilized mouse droppings, and desiccated spiders.

thank you for the tag @joels6string 🤎🤎
1. Are you named after anyone? Nope!
2. When was the last time you cried? This afternoon, multiple times 💅
3. Do you have kids? No.
4. Do you use sarcasm a lot? Yes. I try to limit it, as people don’t tend to pick up on it because my delivery is pretty dry.
5. What’s the first thing you notice about people? The way they carry themselves in conversation. I usually end up being right when someone rubs me wrong in initial conversation. That, and shoes.
6. What’s your eye colour? Grey.
7. Scary movies or happy endings? 99% of the time, happy endings. I can appreciate a scary movie every now and then, but I have to be in the right headspace.
8. Any special talents? I’ve mastered the art of standing on the train platform in the right spot to be in front of the opening doors.
9. Where were you born? The Netherlands.
10: What are your hobbies? Writing, reading, watching movies/series. In the same vein, I love going to the cinema. I paint when I have enough patience, and I collect tiny/stupid things to put in a vintage typecase. I also have a soft spot for doing groceries and cooking with friends!
11. Have you any pets? Yes! A cat, named Fleur.
12: What sports do you play/have you played? Not a sports kid. The current sport is getting through the week.
13: How tall are you? Somewhere between 5’4 and 5’5.
14. Favourite subject in school? English (as a foreign language).
15. Dream job? Probably something along the lines of museum guide and/or curator.
tagging whoever sees this, because head empty, no thoughts.

Anatomy of type
I have considered including the anatomy of type within my poster design as it is a fundamental element within type design and usage. Being able to understand how it is created, helps a designer to better understand when and what kind should be used.
Aperture: The partially enclosed space of a letterform.
Ascender: An upward vertical stroke that extends beyond the x-height.
Baseline: The invisible line on which all letters rest.
Bowl: The generally round or elliptical forms which are the basic body shape of letters.
Cap height: The distance from the baseline to the top of the capital letter.
Counter: The white space enclosed by a letterform.
Crossbar: The horizontal stroke in letters.
Descender: A downward vertical stroke that extends beyond the baseline.
Dot: Also known as a title, is a small diacritic on a lowercase i or j.
Eye: The closed counter of a lowercase e.
Finial: A tapered or curved end on a letterform.
Ligature: Two or more letters tied into a single character.
Lowercase: A smaller form of letters in a typeface.
Shoulder: A curved stroke originating from a stem.
Spine: The main curved stroke of a lowercase or capital letter.
Stem: A main stroke that is more or less straight, not part of a bowl.
Serif: A stroke added to the beginning or end of one of the main strokes of a letter.
Small Capital: Short capital letters designed to blend with lowercase text.
Stroke: A straight or curved line that creates the principal part of a letter.
Terminal: A circular form at the end of the arm, leg or brow in letters.
Uppercase: A typecase containing capital letters.
x-height: The distance between the baseline and the height of the lowercase letter ‘x’.
Weight: The thickness of a font’s stroke.

I also looked at the book, Thinking with Type, by Ellen Lupton. I am familiar with this book as I had to design an infographic and a booklet for her last year in M+M. I was really glad that I did have a chance to study Ellen as looking at her research further, it continues to help me understand typography, from the application, to design and all the rules that go along with it. These are some extracts that I have collected from her book, that I thought could help me in this project.
What I really enjoyed about reading her book, last year and again this year is how the constant reminders of her teaching are helping me to improve as a designer. Obviously, that is the purpose of the book, but revising her readings again this year has been a great recap of design dos and don't. It has also inspired me to push some of my own boundaries and try to design in a golden section and increase the negative space within my work. I also love the editing marks that are in the back of the book, I always feel that this could be an interesting element to add to my design, but for this project, I'm not sure if it is fitting, as we are highlighting type, not publications.

And now for the December Bundle! The December Bundle always gets people throwing random stuff on the press to fill their quota, but sometimes good stuff manages to sneak in. LOL at the “Panic at the typecase” one — how true. Also props to the glorious monument to 40s commercial type. Mine commemorates the holiday that I prefer to celebrate: perihelion, the moment when the Earth stops plunging towards the Sun and begins to pull away from the giant thermonuclear explosion at the center of the solar system. I also figured a nice smileyface would put a human spin on my snarky press persona. Credit given to those with InstaMETABook accounts! #apa #apabundle #amalgamatedprintersassociation #apa963 #merryperihelion #panicatthetypecase https://www.instagram.com/p/CmZkCCjOsb1/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
