Taken the same day as the previous post, this was an American pistachio (Pistacia mexicana). They occur in isolated patches throughout southern Texas, northeastern Mexico, down to Guatemala and Honduras within limestone cliffs or ravine edges. Blooming lasts from spring to late summer, with clusters of small, white flowers are that become clusters of red drupes on females, as shown here (note this one isn't red as it's dried), while the leaves change red in the spring before becoming dark-green later in the season. Note that while they're closely related to the common pistachio of western Asia, their seeds are too small, and often empty, to be edible. Sadly, they are near threatened due to habitat loss. #plant #plants #tree #trees #wildflowers #wildflower #texasplants #texasplant #txplants #txnature #shrub #shrubs #pistachio #pistachios #texasnativeplants #texasnature #nature #flora #plantae #angiosperms #vascularplant #tracheophyta #asterids #eudicots #sapindales #anacardiaceae #pistacia #pistaciamexicana #americanpistachio (at Austin Nature & Science Center) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClKStEFKfuO/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Taken the same day as the previous post, this was a Texas mountain laurel (Dermatophyllum secundiflorum). They are native to the southwestern United States and Mexico wherever there are rocky limestone soils. They bloom during the March-April producing drooping bluish-lavender flower clusters that are very fragrant, described as having a fragrance similar to grape soda. Afterwards, they fruit into semi-woody seed pods like the ones shown here. These pods hold lacquer red seeds that are poisonous enough to kill an adult since they contain the alkaloid cytisine. However, these seeds were valued by some indigenous peoples who used them for ceremonial purposes as a hallucinogen, before being replaced by peyote, and for ornamental purposes. #plant #plants #tree #trees #wildflowers #wildflower #texasplants #texasplant #txplants #txnature #shrub #shrubs #frijolito #frijolitos #texasnativeplants #texasnature #nature #flora #plantae #angiosperms #vascularplant #tracheophyta #asterids #eudicots #fabales #fabaceae #dermatophyllum #dermatophyllumsecundiflorum #texasmountainlaurel (at Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center) https://www.instagram.com/p/CklRqSbKTYw/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Taken the same day as the previous post, this was an tree cholla (Cylindropuntia imbricata) patch. They are native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico in arid regions just below the pinyon-juniper belt. Flowers bloom during late spring/early summer with magenta blossoms. They eventually shed the flower, producing a tubercular yellow fruits with a hollow that once held the flower and retain these fruits throughout the winter. The fruits are eaten by many birds and mammals, though they might not taste good to us since they're dry and have little taste, but that didn't stop the Native Americans of Arizona and New Mexico from enjoying them. Besides food, they're known to shelter small animals. #plant #plants #flower #flowers #wildflowers #wildflower #texasplants #texasplant #txplants #txnature #succulents #succulent #texasnativeplants #cactus #cacti #cholla #chollas #texasnature #nature #plantae #angiosperms #vascularplant #tracheophyta #liliopsida #dicots #caryophyllales #cactaceae #cylindropuntia #cylindropuntiaimbricata #treecholla (at Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center) https://www.instagram.com/p/CkjX032KKci/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
