Trey Info Compilation part 14: Cater (pt1)
Cater and Trey seem to be considered a set by the other students: Rook refers to Cater as Trey’s “boon companion” and Trey doesn’t deny it or become awkward, and Lilia refers to Trey as Cater’s partner.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cater invites Trey to join him in the Firelit Sky event and Grim comments, “it’s the pair that never changes” (localized as “no surprises there” for EN).

During the Wish Upon a Star event we learn that Trey and Cater roomed together for their first two years in school.
In one of their earliest interactions with Deuce, Ace, Grim and the prefect, Trey explains Cater’s use of nicknames for others on his behalf, and asks him to “take it down a notch” when Cater gets excited about getting the prefect’s contact information. When Cater asks to spend the night at Ramshackle, Trey says no.

Cater acts as Trey’s righthand man during Book 1 as they clean up Riddle’s rampages, and Cater even drops his honorific for Trey, which is a big deal for Cater (more here).
When Cater compliments Riddle’s oyster-sauce-flavored strawberry tart, Trey reveals that he figured out that Cater does not like sweet food, despite Cater trying to keep it a secret.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the EN adaptation this interaction was rewritten to Cater admonishing himself for trying to hide his feelings, but this was changed from his actual dialogue where he admonishes Trey, saying something closer to, “Your whole ‘not saying what you think’ thing is really not good,” which ties back into Trey’s enabling of Riddle rather than blaming himself.
Trey promises to make a quiche for the next party in order to make up for it, and Cater has a line about “a student at the dorm” baking him a diamond-shaped quiche that was tailored to his tastes, but he does not specify who made it.

Trey Info Compilation part 9: Anger and Science Club
Trey says that he doesn’t get mad very often, and there might be only one vignette where we see him do so: Trey is less than thrilled when the younger Heartslabyul students complain about the lack of variety in the cakes that he bakes for unbirthday parties and encourages them to make their own instead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Deuce calls Ace out on starting the conversation in the first place and Ace observes, “Trey’s a chill guy. It’d take more than that to get him mad.” Deuce agrees that Trey is pretty mature, saying, “He’s kindhearted and caring—a pretty rare combo among our student body.”
Cater says that even he has barely ever seen Trey get mad, “But when he DOES get bent out of shape, he can stay that way for a while…”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The younger students fail spectacularly at their cake-making assignment, angering Riddle who threatens to collar them all, but Trey physically grabs him by the arm before he can do so.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trey says that while the cake is a joke, even as just a rookie effort, it’s emblematic of Hearslabyul for being created by the first-year students, “and really, isn’t that what matters?” (Riddle responds, “No! Not in the least!”)
Trey procures a backup cake that he’d prepared for just in case and the younger students thank him, but Trey interrupts with, “Sure this cake isn’t good enough for you. You’d rather mix it up, right? Don’t worry—this one is for me and Riddle to share.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trey declares that none of the students who complained about him are allowed to share his cake until they’ve eaten all of their own and Ace observes, “So much for Trey being ‘kindhearted and mature.’” Cater follows with, “The more chill the dude, the scarier he gets when you push him over the edge.”
Trey says he joined the Science Club by process of elimination, as he actually wanted to join a home ec or cooking club but neither are offered at NRC. He says that he loves the Science club anyway, as making cakes out of fruit he has grown himself has proven to be surprisingly addictive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Despite claiming that he only joined to compensate for the lack of cooking clubs Trey seems to sincerely enjoy the science aspect of the club: after Trey gives a detailed explanation of catfish during Vargas Camp 2 Rook explains that Trey always pays close attention to the presentations that Science Club members give on the topics that interest them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trey says that anyone can research whatever they want in the club, which means he gets to “hear about all sorts of fascinating stuff.”
Also during Vargas Camp 2 Trey gives a lecture on bedrock gasses, even creating a demonstration of water vapor reactions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
During the Firelit Sky event Trey also explains how fireworks function to Malleus, saying, “the Science Club does more than cook and grow vegetables, you know. We also do research to prep for competitions. There’s a lot more work than you’d think.”
Trey says that Crewel helps with Science Club activities and describes him as “an…intense individual.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Science Club sets up a “decorative plant cafe” for the culture fair in Book 5, for which Trey fine-tuned the menu. Trey insists, “cooking is high scientific. Food preparation is arguable a form of experimentation. This is a perfectly legitimate science exhibit.”
Trey says he likes chemistry. “It may be more time-consuming than magic, but being successful at it feels that much sweeter.”

Trey Info Compilation part 4: Food (pt1)
One of the first things we learn about Trey is he is a very talented baker.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see Cater get put in charge of second-year students who have been assigned “dessert duty” while Trey is busy with the Wish Upon a Star event, but they experience so many issues that Trey takes over. Riddle is not amused (“You’ve defeated the entire purpose. What were you thinking?”), but Trey explains that baking requires a lot of specific know-how.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trey seems to bake for the students of Heartslabyul very often: Cater shares sweets made by Trey with Ace, Trey says he was baking cookies when Riddle got kidnapped in Book 6 and he mentions baking a cake, making caramels, apple pies and tarte Tatins in voice lines.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
During Vargas Camp 2 Azul withholds the magestones that will help them defeat the Vargas Monster from Trey and Vil until they agree to work shifts at Mostro Lounge.
Trey agrees without an argument and it is revealed that Azul was merely putting on a show of haggling for Vil: what he’d really wanted was Trey’s confectionery expertise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cater mentions Trey’s baking often, saying that his pumpkin pie is “the best thing (he has) ever tasted,” and everything Trey makes tastes as good as it looks.
We see Trey helping Jamil with food presentation in a vignette where he adds rose petals to a dish, as “Color contrast is essential for plating if you’re going to work yourself to the bone making good food, you may as well make sure people enjoy every aspect of it.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Kalim asks for tips on hospitality, Trey says that he tries not to make anything divisive.
Trey mentions food often during Firelit Sky, which he attends specifically because he wants to try unique confections and find fresh inspiration for his unbirthday party desserts.
Grim says parts of Kalim’s house look like onions and pumpkins and Trey says that they look like turnips and unripe tomatoes, to Cater’s surprise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Trey comparing things to food/cooking implements is not unusual: he compares Eliza's wedding veil to "a freshly-bleached dishtowel," her eyes to grapes and the sight of Floyd fighting Jack during Beanfest as "like a giant blender.")
During Vargas Camp Trey is bothered by how his fish lacks "a certain depth of flavor," and is delighted by a discovery of rock salt.
