Jamil Info Compilation part 34: Suspicion, Bugs and More
Jamil is one of several students who seems suspicious of Crowley, but he is possibly the only person thus far who has admitted to being suspicious of the Dark Mirror itself.
After Kalim explains that he transferred late to NRC and Deuce asks, “they belatedly recognized the nature of your soul?,” Jamil follows with, “I’m still skeptical that the Dark Mirror actually selects students based on that...knowing the headmage, he probably arranged for a backdoor admission so he could get some generous Asim family donations.”
In a flashback we see that Crowley has all but admitted to Jamil that this is the reason why he allowed Kalim's promotion to Housewarden.
Jamil has hated bugs ever since he was a child and found one in handful of dates he was eating. He tried to get rid of it via fire magic, which ended up burning the awning to the store from which he had purchased the dates.
Jamil says he has never eaten dates again, and “even the sight and smell are too much for me.”
Jamil resorts immediately to fire to handle bugs during Halloween as well, and during Fairy Gala he says he even hesitates to touch the silver insects that decorate his boots, though he knows they’re not real.
We learn that Ace once pranked him by putting a toy bug on his bag after basketball practice. Jamil says, “You can rest assured I got him back thoroughly.”
Kalim may not take Jamil’s bug-phobia very seriously: in a chat he encourages Jamil to help him catch a bug that he finds in the lecture hall, with Jamil saying, “You KNOW bugs freak me out, Kalim!”
Curry is Jamil’s favorite food, despite how he once—as Kalim’s food tester—was “bedridden for days on end” after eating poisoned curry that had been meant for Kalim.
Jamil seems to have an unusually good memory.
He says that he makes it a point to memorize people’s names and faces, we see him immediately memorize and recite six different lunch orders during Firelit Sky and he also says, “I never forget a favor…or an offense.”
Jamil getting others to do his dirty work is a common theme.
He tries to use the prefect and Grim to overthrow Kalim during Book 4 and comments that, “Sometimes it’s better to let others do your work for you” in a Beanfest voice line.
He also gathers mirror fragments during Halloween by intentionally letting ghosts find them first, on his behalf, and then taking them by force.
According to Jamil, Ace, Ruggie and himself are the most skilled with their hands.
When asked if he is good at athletics Jamil responds, “I can’t think of any sports I’m bad at, so I suppose I’m passable.”

Jamil Info Compilation part 1: Family
Whereas Jamil is Kalim’s personal servant (attendant, etc.) Jamil’s parents are house servants (menial servants, etc.) for Kalim’s family. (NA changes its wording, sometimes saying “helpers” or “employees”, but the original dialogue is consistent.)
In the NA adaptation Jamil refuses to stand up against Kalim because he fears a lecture from his parents and out of respect for his family’s history.
In his original dialogue, however, he explains that Kalim’s father is essentially holding his family hostage to force his obedience: “If I did something like that and Kalim’s father found out, the Viper family would suffer for it.”
(NA does get the line "There would be consequences for my entire family if he were exposed to any danger.")
When Jamil overblots he has a line saying that he no longer cares about himself or his family, and he is going to be free—the safety of his family and himself being the price of his freedom from servitude to Kalim.
Jamil says that his parents have immersed him in the world of special social occasions since he was a child, and we get more detailed information in his third birthday vignette: Jamil says his parents are extremely adept at entertaining guests, and he wishes to emulate them.
He says his parents are talented at cheering up awkward or anxious people, partially from their in-depth knowledge of the cultures of other countries.
His parents speak to foreign visitors to the Asim estate about their homes, and visitors thus open up to them. Jamil says he didn’t appreciate this talent his parents have when he was child, but now he understands how intelligent they are, their integrity and how hard they work to be able to welcome visitors effectively.
Jamil will occasionally reference his younger sister, Najma. While Jamil and his parents are confirmed servants of the Asim house, there is no mention of whether or not they also employ Najma. (But in a line that was removed from NA, he says, "That is the fate of those born a Viper," so it is very likely.)
Jamil gives her one of his tickets to the VDC, saying that it makes him nervous to know that family will be watching his performance.
Jamil says that Najma's interest in coffee divination is why he is able to tell basic fortunes, and he cannot relax when cooking at home because she starts complaining if he gets sloppy.
We meet Najma during the Firelit Sky event when Jamil immediately tries to send her away but Cater, Trey and Malleus pressure him into allowing her to join them. (Cater immediately admits that he would “die of embarrassment” if his sisters saw him with his friends. When Trey calls him out for inviting her along anyway Cater responds, “It’s not every day we get to see Jamil all flustered.”)
Najma says Jamil never talks about having friends when he visits home, and Jamil insists that he considers no one in the group as a friend.
We see Jamil encouraging Najma to use wet wipes to wash her hands before she eats, which Cater calls “a little overbearing.”
Najma tells a story about Jamil hiding inside a vase to sneak away from a lecture from their mother and teases him about having pictures of the incident.
Najma says that “Jamil was the best in the whole neighborhood” at an animal-toy stacking game (presumably inspired from the animated Aladdin movie).
Jamil says that Najma would sulk when she lost and run away, forcing him to pick up the abandoned pieces of her game while being lectured by their parents. We learn in Book 6 that Jamil and Najma have multiple video game consoles at home.
Najma says that it’s easy to lean on him, and thanks him. She also says that her grades are “stellar” and she does well in sports, too.
Najma says she will cook curry for Jamil for after the festival, and she may cook for him fairly often: Jamil has a voice line about how she would bake cookies for him on his birthday.

Jamil Info Compilation part 5: Jamil and Azul
Azul and Jamil are in the same homeroom and share a number of electives. Azul describes Jamil as demure, poised and someone who hardly ever ventures opinions of his own.
We see Jamil finally share his true opinions about Kalim after Azul helps bring down Jamil in Book 4, and Azul says that he likes the authentic Jamil much more.
(Leona makes a similar comment in Book 6 saying that he, too, prefers it when Jamil shows his emotions, as it is an improvement over his "usual, sycophantic attitude.")
Jamil says that Azul’s “ingratiating smile” grosses him out and Azul says that he has been curious about Jamil ever since their first year, inviting Jamil to transfer to Octavinelle.
Jamil responds, “Not on your life,” lashes out at Azul for “monologuing” and says that he will be “perfectly content” never being friends with Azul.
Having added a “new truth” to his secret collection, Azul does not press the matter.
When Azul is pretending to be mind-controlled by Jamil, Jamil says that he “made the right call” by not making friends with Azul, implying that he has been avoiding Azul for just as long as Azul has been interested in him.
Azul and Jamil overlap briefly in Book 5 with Azul again offering him a place at Octavinelle (Jamil: “Octavinelle is the last dorm I would ever transfer to,” and in his second birthday vignette he says that if he were to transfer to anywhere, it would be to Ignihyde, as well as that he would like to avoid Octavinelle at all costs as he would never get a moment's peace.)
Azul is Jamil’s judge in Culinary Crucible and offers him a job in the Mostro Lounge kitchen, which Jamil also refuses.
In Jamil’s lab wear vignette Azul happily declares to Riddle that he and Jamil were brought together by their “deep and enduring bond as classmates,” but Jamil follows with, “Don’t listen to him. We just happened to run into each other when we were both on our way to the lab room.”
Azul reiterates his curiosity about Jamil, saying that he gets the feeling that they could do “some wonderful business together,” while Jamil says he feels the exact opposite.
In a PE vignette Jamil is assigned to teach Azul how to fly by Vargas, but Azul refuses his assistance on the basis that he does not trust that Jamil does not have an ulterior motive.
Vargas refuses to let either student leave the field until Azul can fly straight for 50 meters, and Jamil insists, “if Kalim can learn to fly with my advice, then you can, too.”
Jamil eventually gives in and pretends to want an exam study guide. In exchange, and Azul accepts his advice.
In Floyd’s ceremonial robes vignette we see the two overlap again with Azul visiting Scarabia for the express purpose of helping Jamil explain the shambles that result from a performance by Floyd to the headmage (“And yet I doubt you offer your services for free.”)
Jamil seems constantly cautious of Azul, saying during Halloween that he is suspicious of how little Azul eats.
(Azul has issues with food stemming from his childhood, but he deflects Jamil’s line of questioning by claiming that he is just an “honest businessman” who is scoping out the catering.)
Jamil is even suspicious of the way in which Azul wishes him happy birthday.
Jamil has a voice line about receiving seasoning that he’d wanted as a birthday gift from Azul, but he is uncomfortable about it because he has no memory of telling anyone he’d wanted it.

Jamil Info Compilation part 11: Unique Magic and Silver
Jamil is possibly the first character to use his unique magic on the prefect, hypnotizing them twice in Book 4.
He seems to require eye contact for it to work, and it seems to cause his target physical pain if they resist his attempts to overthrow their will.
He successfully hypnotizes Neige in Book 5 and even borrows from the spell for Kalim’s own unique magic, instructing him to “Dance! Sing!”
Silver and Jamil’s overlap during Spectral Soiree begins with Jamil attacking and gleefully stealing mirror fragments from the ghosts despite Silver’s efforts to handle the situation peacefully and his insistence that “It’s wrong to take other people’s things. Just because they’re villains doesn’t mean it’s okay to rob them.”
Jamil is unamused, but ultimately convinces Silver that they are just borrowing the fragments by invoking Malleus.
Silver is successfully convinced that Jamil is trying to teach him a life lesson.
This pattern repeats when the two meet up with Jack, with Jamil insisting on hearing more about Silver’s life growing up.
Silver says that is he amazed by Jamil’s foresight and thoughtfulness, assuming that Jamil is attempting to get to know him better in order to make Jack more comfortable working the the group. Jamil responds with, “Yes, sure, whatever.”
At the end of the event Silver goes out of his way to present Jamil to Lilia, saying, “Jamil stuck with me through thick and thin. He’s clearheaded and has a keen eye for detail. I relied on him so much during our journey.”
Jamil attempts to deny Silver’s accolades (saying it was only because Silver never listens), and compliments Silver on his honesty and strength (“You deserve to hear that much. I’d hate to leave myself in some kind of moral debt.”)
Also during the end of Spectral Soiree it seems that Jamil was attempting to eavesdrop upon Cater and Silver (“AH! So you noticed me behind you”), but covers for himself by saying that he was worried that Silver had become possessed.
Silver thanks Jamil again for his help and Cater convinces Jamil to help him try to get information out of Silver about the “mysterious and insular” Diasomnia and Malleus.
Jamil insists he does not care, but ultimately agrees as, “I’m not doing anything else besides fetching food for Kalim.”Both Jamil and Cater provide the troubled Silver with advice about “parting,” with Jamil saying he was surprised by how vulnerable Silver had been willing to be, as he is normally so “spacey—er, I mean, unflappable.”
Jamil is Silver’s judge for Culinary Crucible and describes the flavor of his dish as “typical” and “certain acceptable,” saying that he cannot tell how much of the praise should go to him versus the pressure cooker that Silver used out of concern for falling asleep during the process.
The two overlap again in a vignette where Jamil, at first, refuses to believe that Silver is capable of attracting forest creatures.
Thoroughly convinced by the end, he says that Silver is “an odd one indeed.”

Jamil Info Compilation part 25: Stealing, Hometown, Ruggie
In Firelit Sky we learn that child Jamil would steal food from the vendors in the markets at his hometown.
Jamil reminds one vendor that he did pay him back the next day, but later on Jamil admits to Trey that he and his friends would swipe food in middle school.
During Spectral Soiree Jamil uses the ghosts to collect mirror shards for the purpose of stealing them, though SIlver does not approve.
The ghosts insist, “It’s not nice stealing others’ hard-earned stuff!” and Silver agrees with “It’s wrong to take other people’s things.” Jamil insists that they are only borrowing the fragments until the Halloween party.
Malleus later commends the students for finding as many mirror fragments as they have and Jamil does not comment out loud silently saying, “I don’t have the heart to tell him I got most of these by tricking Silver and stealing them from the ghosts…”
Jamil may not be entirely fond of his hometown: he says that, much to his chagrin, “It’s still clinging on to all the tired old customs.” When Trey points out that he is “detecting some bitterness” Jamil says, “…let’s just say I don’t like everything about it.”
During Firelit Sky Jamil calls out a vendor for trying to swindle Grim, haggling a lower price for a decorative lamp and insisting upon receiving a beige cloth for free. Jamil then reveals that the cloth is “a premium fabric made with a very rare dye. "If I sell it to a more discerning vendor, I could get enough money of 30 of those lamps.”
Trey points out that Jamil seems to know the town really well for someone that hates it, and Jamil says, “I said I didn’t like certain things about it. I never said I hated it. Besides…places like these are full of opportunists. I didn’t say I wasn’t one of them.”
Jamil seems to have a questionable opinion of Ruggie, pointing out to Trey and Malleus that they’re not entirely safe from getting robbed at NRC, as he has “heard rumors of a hyaena on campus wth sticky fingers.”
Ruggie and Jamil overlap in a vignette where Jamil says he thinks it would be more painful to serve someone like Leona than Kalim, while Ruggie says that looking after Kalim seems rough and would just make him uncomfortable.

Jamil Info Compilation part 33: Worrying, Flattery and Deuce
Kalim is often commenting that Jamil is a “worrier,” saying that he should take life a little easier.
Jade makes a similar comment, while Floyd says that it is “more like paranoia.”
During Firelit Sky, Najma says that she worries about Jamil: “You put on a real good show of being a decent guy in public, and you do a great job taking care of everything. But you can take silly things way too seriously sometimes, and you can be so stubborn. It makes me worry that you’re pushing yourself too hard.” Jamil insists that he is doing just fine. (It is unclear if Firelit Sky takes place before or after the events of Book 4.)
Jamil is prone to flattering people: When Vargas compliments his flying ability he says “It’s really all thanks to your splendid instruction,” and he flatters “the fairest of them all, Vil Schoenheit” so heavily in a vignette that Vil calls him out on it to his face.
This is possibly the source of Vil’s voice line, “Those who play their cards close to their chest have a knack for distasteful tactics, I find. I’ll need to watch out for Jamil.”
In Book 5 Jamil refers to Grim and the player character as “diamonds in the rough,” saying, “I bow before you, sir…surely you two can find us a solution using your sparkling intellect!”
Much like Vil, Riddle also calls Jamil out on his patronizing flattery.
When discussing suit colors for Lilia Jamil says, “I think you could make any color work,” to his face, but silently reflects, “Who cares about the color? I just want to go to bed.”
Jamil is one of very few characters who has ever seen Deuce in delinquent mode, following him to a forest during Halloween with the intention of intervening when Deuce seems to be getting swept up in a group of Magicam Monsters.
Instead, Jamil witnesses Deuce telling off his former friends for daring to threaten his new ones, leaving Jamil to wonder what it was he just saw.
Jamil and Deuce overlap again during Culinary Crucible, where Jamil talks to Deuce about his mother and impresses him with his knife-handling skills. They meet up briefly during the Wish Upon a Star event as well, when Deuce goes to Kalim and Jamil for their opinions on his dancing.
Deuce has a voice line about Jamil fixing the lace on his Halloween costume, saying, “I guess all vice housewardens are good at looking out for others.”
During New Year’s Jamil brings snacks for Deuce and Kalim while they work at the school store, offering to take over their jobs for them while they eat.
(Deuce usually, strictly refers to all upperclassmen as "last-name-senpai," and he does so with Jamil, as well, when Jamil first appears. After he gifts Deuce with a sandwich, however, Deuce makes a one-time exception to his rule, saying "Jamil-senpai" instead of "Viper-senpai" when he thanks him.)
This is revealed to be a ploy to acquire an “amazing ticket” using Scarabia students that Jamil has employed for the purpose. The students reveal they are working for Jamil, but Deuce does not seem to notice.
Jamil purchases the bag, but they were mistaken: the bag contained meal tickets for special lunches at the cafeteria.
Jamil says he might give the tickets to the students who helped him.

Jamil Info Compilation part 26: Jamil in the English-Language Adaptation
During Firelit Sky we learn that Jamil, much like Idia, does not like tradition and customs.
He was rewritten on EN, however, into a character that prioritizes his history and chooses to uphold tradition.
Many of Jamil's lines were changed for EN:
Original Jamil: If I did something like that and Kalim’s father found out, the Viper family would suffer for it.
EN Jamil: Not to mention the lecture I would get from my parents
Original Jamil: I’m sorry, but I’m not going to put my whole family on the street because of my selfishness.
EN Jamil: I’m sorry, but it just wouldn’t be right.
Original Prefect Option: That doesn’t seem like a responsibility that a child should be burdened with…
EN Prefect Option: I guess you make a good point.
Original Jamil: That is the fate of those born a Viper.
EN Jamil: (removed)
Original Jamil: A game of pretending to be masters and servants?
EN Jamil: (removed)
Original Jamil: I’ve been a servant of the Asim house since I was born.
EN Jamil: I’ve always been loyal of the Asim house.
Original Jamil: Masters are masters, and servants are servants.
EN Jamil: (removed)
Original Jamil: And it would be unacceptable for a servant to refuse and order from his master…!
EN Jamil: And it would be unacceptable for an employee to refuse and order from his boss…
Original Jamil: I’m just a servant.
EN Jamil: I’m just a dedicated employee.
(Jamil actually does use the word employee/staff when referring to other people employed by the Asim family, just not for himself)
Original Jamil: The lord/lady of the manor
EN Jamil: your father/mother
Original Jamil: Master
EN Jamil: Employer
Original Malleus: …a servant of the merchant family, Asim.
EN Malleus: …the merchant family that employs you.
Original Jamil: I have a generous master
EN Jamil: Kalim is a big spender.
Master/servant is wording that has been taken directly from Disney’s Aladdin, but it gets removed very often from the EN adaptation of Twst, disappearing from Jamil’s dialogue in Book 6, Jamil’s birthday and Jamil’s unique magic in Book 5, though it returns in Book 6, so maybe it was judged to be more appropriate for the STYX staff member than it was for Neige?
Question: If you had a parrot, what’s the first word you’d teach it?
Original Jamil: Probably “master.”
EN Jamil: Probably “Hello.”
Original Jamil: It's important to teach hierarchy, right?
EN Jamil: Is that…too obvious?
EN also has the one time that Jamil refers to Kalim with the “-sama” honorific removed.
Though sometimes ignoring JP’s “-sama,” sometimes they don’t!
It has thus far been translated as “Master,” “O Great,” “Housewarden,” “O mighty,” “Count” and “Mr.”

Jamil Info Compilation part 23: Effort(pt2)
After his overblot Jamil insists that he will not be holding back anymore and Kalim responds, “But I won’t lose, either!”
Kalim then loses to Jamil in Book 5.
At first Jamil tries to defer to Kalim, as usual, but then accepts the position of main vocalist, over Kalim.
Shortly after, Kalim shares his realization that he might not be as talented as Jamil, as he had been led to believe by his upbringing: “I’m always chosen. Always. That’s such an obvious truth that I never even consciously processed it. But now I see that was only possible because of Jamil’s constant sacrifices. He created that ‘truth’ in my mind by always holding back. By always letting me win." Jamil overhears this conversation, but does not comment.
We see Jamil attempt to defer to Kalim again during Firelit Sky when he is offered a high honor as a gesture of appreciation for saving the event.
Jamil insists that he cannot deny Kalim the opportunity as the Asim family heir and one of the hosts, but Kalim and the other students eventually convince him to accept it.
We learn more about Jamil’s lifetime of deferring to Kalim during Firelit Sky, when Kalim mentions how, as children, they would “play kick-the-can ’til the sun went down. I won every game.”
Jamil insists that it was because the park was too large, but Cater quietly comments, “Jamil totally took a dive…poor guy’s been driven half neurotic.”
During Fairy Gala Jamil promotes Kalim’s abilities by saying that he has studied traditional dance since he was a child, downplaying his own abilities with, “I’m a bit into street dancing.”
At the end of the event, however, Vil compliments Jamil on his ability to cover for Kalim’s mistakes.
During Halloween Jamil and the other Scarabia students are less than confident in Kalim’s ability to scare away Magicam Monsters, though Kalim insists upon taking the role.
During Kalim’s attack his eyes take on the glow that happens when he has been taken over by Jamil and he successfully scares both the Magicam Monsters and the doubting members of his own dorm.
Kalim's eyes go back to normal and he seems surprised that the visitors have already left, saying that he had wanted to take pictures with them “to show there were no hard feelings.”
Jamil then takes up his usual role flattering Kalim, saying that he is a credit to his position as Housewarden.
This constant promotion of Kalim over himself may be part of why Kalim seems so self-assured about his own abilities when compared to Jamil: when Jamil asks what Kalim’s time was after a sprint exercise in PE Kalim responds, “I can’t remember, but I’ll bet it’s faster than yours’ll be!”
During Book 5 Jamil talks about Kalim forcing him to spend hours a day playing mancala, insisting on going until he won a game.
Despite all this experience he loses three games of five to Floyd, who is playing for the first time.
We learn that Jamil is under explicit instructions from his parents to always let Kalim win. Seeing Jamil lose Azul says, “that would explain it,” but does not choose to elaborate.
We learn from Azul that Jamil has never gotten outstanding marks in the classroom or in practical studies, but he has also never gotten a negative mark.
Azul says that his suspicions were confirmed when Jamil lost at mancala, as he maintained a balanced win/loss ratio for the sake of Floyd's mood: “There’s an art to feigning defeat. You have to tune it just right. It requires considerable skill and mental fortitude to pull off.”

Jamil Info Compilation part 10: Cater
For all his impatience with the majority of NRC’s other students, Jamil seems unusually fond of Cater.
He notices that Cater is only buying souvenirs for others during Firelit Sky, and when Cater asks him to pick something out on his behalf Jamil privately escorts him to a shop for locals rather than tourists, based on the fact that—to Cater’s surprise—he has noticed that Cater only carries name-brand accessories.
Cater picks out two different scarves for himself, but Jamil recommends a salmon-pink scarf, instead, saying, “I just thought a softer color suited your personality, Cater. You’re so friendly and easy to get along with. You give off a gentle vibe…I’ve been grateful for your and Trey’s steadying presence today.”
(He also mentions that Cater’s inviting of Najma did give him Cater’s fair share of trouble.)
Cater reacts with surprise to the compliment (“I didn’t know you saw me that way.”) and says he is flattered, buying the scarf that Jamil has suggested, despite how Cater does not actually like the color pink (due to how it was forced upon him as a child by his older sisters).
Cater then offers to buy a gift for Jamil to thank him for making the suggestion.
For Cater’s second birthday Jamil buys him a collection of colorful stickers for his skateboard, despite how Cater has never actually told him that he is into skateboarding.
Jamil reveals that he heard about it from Kalim, then cross-referenced with Cater’s Magicam account, picking out sticker designs that matched a new skateboard that Cater posted about. (“…I mentioned that to Kalim ages ago. I’m impressed you remembered that.”)
When Cater says he wishes that Vil were his younger brother (rather than his older brother, despite how Vil is the older of the two), Cater says that he already has enough little brother figures at Heartlsabyul.
Jamil reacts with surprise, saying that he has heard from Ace that Cater does a lot for the Heartslabyul students. “I think you’ve very caring compared to other older students. It’s quite impressive.” Cater accepts the compliment.
When Jamil notices trouble with Deuce during Halloween, his first reaction is to report to Cater.
