eternity float of the coral sea event synopsis + speculation

OKAY

So “Eternity Float” refers to a wedding tradition or custom that originated from the Sea Witch’s matchmaking morays that once gave a “love trial” to the mermaid princess and her beloved human prince (from the Sunshine Lands). I assume that this “love trial” must refer to when Flotsam and Jetsam flipped over Ariel and Eric’s boat In the Twst world, the boat flipping is interpreted as an event which brought the two lovers of different races closer together. (This was a story previously established in Jade's Platinum Jacket vignettes.)

For this event, Jade and co. will be visiting an harbor/seaside town (Azure Town) in the Sunshine Lands. You can see some of its buildings on the cliffs in the background of the limited event SR cards:

The event synopsis also mentions “[congratulating] the newly weds”, though it does not specify who they are. It doesn’t seem to be referring to w celebration of the mermaid princess in her prince (which I had previously speculated), so I wonder who the lucky pair is…?

The premise of “Eternity Float” poses a few questions to me when considered alongside other lore we know of 🤔 Like... how common is it for merpeople to have their weddings shoreside instead of entirely underwater??? Because Ruggie mentions (in his Halloween Dress vignettes) working at a wedding venue (which I assume is on land) and how the merfolk couples would specifically request a warm dessert rainbow soup with trident cookies, things which would be pretty difficult to prepare underwater. Did the mermaid princess's wedding end up influencing what is popular for merfolk weddings in general? Sort of like how Queen Victoria's white satin dress set the trend for western weddings? Or would merfolk marrying on land be something more akin to a destination wedding?

In Floyd’s Beans Camo vignettes, he mentions it is “pretty rare” for merfolk to live on land… but maybe it’s more common to go there temporarily? I only say this because if it’s fine for merpeople to go to land temporarily, this doesn’t conflict with other lore which states that adult merfolk like to visit stores along the coast + Mr. Leech owns similar businesses. So does this imply that merfolk like to visit the land for special occasions and celebrations, including weddings and vacations???

Also!! I know there's a lot of fandom speculation about what the Leech family "business" could be, with the most common one being they're the undersea mob. There is also a variant which suggests it would be funny if it turns out their business is actually Normal and is just related to the government, meaning things have to be kept hush-hush.

I wonder if the tourism businesses Mr. Leech runs along the shore are like... cover-ups for shadier dealings, or if these are just genuinely how he makes his money. Does he have fingers in the wedding industry as well??? This might give him a reason to be the parent present for this hometown event (though of course there's no confirmation yet).

Azul Ashengrotto

Azul actually has a lot of little touches in his room that are very cute. For one thing, his general decor lends itself to the idea that Azul likes the finer things in life. Truthfully, all of the dorm rooms are have shown a lot of attention to the character's actual stylistic preferences in the Guest room and Azul is no exception.

Rather than having a bedside table, Azul has a second safe in his room in addition to the large one he has in his office. This is interesting because, well, that means that there's things that are likely more important to him than the contracts he kept in his vault in his office. I'm certainly curious about what sort of thing Azul would choose to keep in a personal vault - are they especially important contracts to him? Money? Or, perhaps, just other things that are especially special to him. I know the kneejerk reaction for a lot of folks is to be that it's where he stores his coin collection, however...

Azul actually displays his coin collection in a frame! He has them mounted in velvet.

Several of the other characters have featured a feather pen and ink bottles in their room, however a cute touch is that Azul's pen is actually fish bones. This is a cute little insight into what they may use for pens underneath the Coral Sea. Or, perhaps, Azul just has a flare for the dramatic.

Azul has a trunk and several potion bottles on top of his wardrobe. The fact that Azul has these out in the open on top of the trunk likely means that all of the items in the trunk were potion bottles, and then because they were stored up so high, he placed the ones he commonly uses on top, rather than storing them back inside the trunk. Azul is otherwise very organized, so it would make logical sense that if he's not putting these away, they're likely out because he knows he's going to reach for them again.

This is honestly probably my favorite detail in Azul's room because these are terrariums. Azul never mentions having any interest in Terrariums, but Jade does, meaning that these are likely terrariums that Jade made for Azul and gave him as gifts. This is actually really cute, because though the Leech twins joke about leaving Azul as soon as he becomes boring in canon, this shows that Jade at the very least thinks of Azul in his free time when he's not at work or around Azul by obligation, enough to have given him gifts. it's also worth noting that Azul has these displayed, which means that they aren't a gift that's rotting away in a drawer or stowed away somewhere. It's also worth mentioning that the ones that have plants in them are alive, which requires at least some level of attention to them in order to maintain the environment inside. Little things like this show how much the characters actually care about each other.

Jade Leech

Jade is an interesting case because he, like Ruggie and Trey, doesn't actually have much displayed in his room in terms of decoration. That being said, what he does have displayed are his terrariums. Jade being the sole member of the Mountain Lover's club, it seems like he probably spends a lot of his free time out and tending to either his plants in the greenhouse or actually hiking.

This isn't likely directly because of Jade, however it seems like Octavinelle as a whole have coat hangers and hat racks that are themed around octopi, which is possibly the cutest thing I've ever seen.

Jade is notably organized - he has his shoes on his shoe rack, his hat and scarf hung up, and his bed made. This will become more important when you see Floyd's half of the room.

There is also this object. While I'm not certain and it doesn't seem to be mentioned in any of Jade's vignettes outright, I suspect this may be a jewelry box. It's a little hard to tell in comparison to a lot of the items in the student rooms, though, so if anyone has any additional input, please let me know! Neither of the other two from Octavinelle have an object like this one in their rooms.

Fun fact, Jade AND Floyd both have errors in their Night 2 versions of their backgrounds, as they are both missing the hidden Mickey.

Floyd Leech

Oh, Floyd, sweetheart, you live like this?

Jokes aside, Floyd actually has some things of note! While his side of his and Jade's room (canonically they share a room) is messy, he's messy in a different fashion than someone like Leona. Where Leona doesn't hang his clothes - Floyd does. Or at the very least, it seems like someone does it for him. (Given the haphazard hanging of his jacket, though, I would guess that he probably does it himself.) What does that tell us? Well, more than likely, Floyd gets small bursts of motivation to clean certain aspects of his room, and then grows bored and gives them up. To be quite honest, for those who know of or experience it, Floyd's organization style reminds me a lot of how ADHD folks tend to struggle with forming sustainable cleaning habits, as it's often easier to put something down rather than to put it away.

Snacks, literally everywhere. Floyd has snacks on his desk as well as on the shelf above his bed. It would seem that Floyd has a serious sweet-tooth, given the amount of sweets that we see in his room.

For the life of me, I could not tell you if this is a trash bin or not, but if it is, it looks like whatever Floyd put in there has teeth marks on it.

Another thing of note about Floyd's room, while there's a lot of things that are strewn around, there's not actually all that much trash around. He has a single empty container on his desk, but otherwise his floors are clean, and it seems like things that need to end up disposed are. Again, whether or not that's Jade intervening because they share a room, it's hard to say.

As was mentioned in Jade's section, both Floyd and Jade's Night 2 versions of their backgrounds are missing the hidden Mickey. Floyd's background has an additional error however!

Floyd's box of cookies is actually missing the box in his Night 2 artwork. If I had to guess, since I have experience with digital art, more than likely, the layer containing these details was accidentally deleted when making the edits for the Night 2 cards, resulting in these things disappearing when the background were published. It's a minor error, all things considered, and gave me a little giggle because now it just looks like Floyd has haunted cookies floating in his room.

Addendum

Excellent catch by @twistedminutia that Azul's fish bone pen is likely in reference to the pen Ariel signs her contract with in the original movie! (To be quite honest, and I know this is ironic given that this blog has such a heavy octavinelle theming, but the little mermaid was my least favorite Disney movie growing up, so I never would have caught this myself!)

Many people walk dogs in Seaglass Park. It seems dogs are a popular pet in Ultramarine City! This is because the mermaid princess’s human prince—Eric—is said to have cherished dogs. In fact, he once leapt into danger to help his dog (Max). The people of Ultramarine City honor his courageous act by keeping dogs of their own and by holding dog races and grooming contests. (Side note, Jade claims that a stray cat is also a dog??? And I recall Azul also saying he had trouble telling what is and is not a dog…? But is Jade just saying this to fuck with us?? Because he, Floyd, and Azul seem to understand what dogs are in Jack’s Labwear vignettes…)

Tile crafts are popular since building materials strong against moisture and salinity are needed in a coastal town. For the same reason, ceramics are also popular. Jade mentions music boxes with ceramic figures are common. AND ARIEL PLAYS WITH A MUSIC BOX IN HER TREASURE GROTTO IN PART OF YOUR WORLD… (A music box is also what King Triton gifted Queen Athena, Ariel’s mom, before she died.) He used to find such items in shipwrecks and played with them. (We know that Jade likes to scavenge and collect things from the bottom of the sea, which is very Ariel-like!)

The Port Inn Plaza looks EXACTLY like the town square from Eric’s Kingdom 😭

In this part of the world, it’s perfectly okay to walk up to puppeteers and take their puppets to put on your own shows! The tradition started when a merman unfamiliar with land took a puppet from a performer; this ended up livening up the show and getting more audience engagement.

The puppet show the NRC students put on is reenacting Eric in the aftermath of Ariel rescuing him 😭 They recite lines about a girl with a beautiful voice having rescued them… Jade goes the extra mile and also acts out Grimsby’s lines + Max the dog’s lines OTL (Yes, barking.)

I don’t recall horses being prominent in TLM outside of the carriage date, but it’s interesting to see them being taken care of in Ultramarine City. Because the sun is so strong, they swap out horses to avoid them getting heatstrokes. The stores also sell many equestrian supplies, including mane combs and hoof brushes, wood carvings of horses, photos, paintings, and charms.

The town sells old fashioned telescopes as a popular souvenir item, even if their performance is limited. Just like how Scuttle used one!!

The mermaid princess and human prince’s wedding was held on a ship. That particular ship’s design is often depicted in story books, paintings, and in model ships.

During the couple’s date on a small boat, fish spouted water and circled them. Water guns shaped like fish have become a local specialty because of this tale.

Dancing is popular! Of course, this is a nod to Ariel and Eric’s dancing scene in the film. Yuu gets a dialogue option here; if you express not being confident in dancing, Jade tells you not to worry; no matter how bad you are at dancing, he will support you. LIKE HOW ERIC HELPED ARIEL...

Riddle and Malleus, who have only ever been taught formal dancing, feel awkward just… moving along to the music. Rook encourages their hearts to lead them and to move how they feel. While this may just be me projecting (it’s much less explicit than everything else so far), this could be a reference to the musical version of TLM. In the song One Step Closer, Eric encourages Ariel to let her emotions come through in her dancing, which is a sentiment VERY similar to the advice Rook offers his peers.

Twisted Hearts 1 Chapter 6: The Great Sea Witch

Story Summary: When an unknown incident lands the students of NRC in a strange new world, they have to travel across worlds to find each other as well as trying to vanquish the darkness. Sounds.... easier than most of what they've been through this school year at least, but nothing is ever that simple, and a pair or adopted siblings will once again find themselves at odds.

Chapter Summary: After fleeing from Triton for the time being, the party finds themself in front of the legendary Great Sea Witch Ursula in hopes of finding assistance.

POV, Silver:

“Phew, I always forget how fast you can swim Flo.” Ariel pants as we all catch our breath as we’ve arrived at what I assume is our destination.

“Hey, good skill to have if you’re swimming away from crazy lightning hurlers,” Floyd quips, “anyone got zapped on the way here?”

“Nah, we’re good,” Ace says as he quickly looks at all of us, “some of us might need to hurl though.”

“Screw you.” Donald fires back, though in Ace’s defence the duck does admittedly look a little bit green.

“Let’s just get going,” Trey says with a sigh as he helps compose a dizzy looking Riddle, “which way is it to Miss Ursula?”

“This way, come on slow pokes, treat this as your actual swimming lesson.” Floyd says as he leads the way with Ariel behind him… and the rest of us a fair bit behind them both.

“Okay, I think I’m getting the hang of it…?” Cater says awkwardly as he does manage to follow the two mers, albeit a bit slowly.

“One, two, three-! Whoa!!” Deuce says as he swims a bit too fast but thankfully manages to turn before he hits a wall.

“I think we’re getting the hang of it!” Sora cheers as he somewhat clumsily but still successfully manages to swim around a corner, and after a few more awkward but thankfully not painful moments we make it to where Floyd was leading us, a very big cave-!!

“Oi, calm down, I’m inviting them, don’t make me squeeze you morons” Floyd bluntly tells the pair of eels who swam out of the cave to try bite us, and they somewhat grumpily back off when he says this.

“Geez, what’s their problem?” Ace asks under his breath as we all swim into the cave.

“Ace don’t go starting anything-AGH!!” Riddle scolds before getting cut off by the missing Leech twin coming in from out of nowhere.

“Heh, apologise Riddle-san, I just heard the commotion and I wanted to see what was happening, I didn’t mean to scare you.” Jade apologises with his usual polite smile.

“Am I seeing double? I don’t think I hit my head on the way here.” Goofy asks as he and Sora look at the twins with confusion.

“What, you never heard of twins before?” Floyd asks almost mockingly as he puts an elbow on Jade’s shoulder.

“I’ve had to raise triplets, trust me, I know.” Donald fires back sounding tired getting a laugh out of Floyd and Ace.

“Ehe,” Sora says with his own slight giggle, “anyway, I’m Sora, that’s Donald and Goofy, and I guess you already know the others from school. It’s nice to meet you!”

“I do, and my name is Jade. It’s a pleasure to meet you as well-,” Jade replies before spotting Trey and his eyes widen in an expression that I can’t read, “what…? Trey-san?”

“Yeah, it’s me,” Trey confirms a bit awkwardly, “I don’t know why I look like this either but it’s better than the type of turtle Goofy ended up as no offence.”

“None taken, this is kinda weird.” Goofy admits as Jade composes himself.

“Well, it’s certainly not what I was expecting, but I can get used to this.” Jade says with a smirk as he holds the now awkwardly chuckling Trey, but before anyone can say anything else I feel the currents moving so someone is coming-

“Alright boys, what’s going on out here-?!,” Ursula (oh by the Seven it’s Ursula!) asks as she comes out but stops as she sees us and her eyes widen in surprise, “well well well, this is quite the group we have here isn't it?”

“Um, hello,” Ariel says a bit awkwardly as the rest of us are frozen in shock, “I’m sorry for intruding miss but we need your help. My father, he’s saying my friends are evil just because of the weapons they have when they just want to help Atlantica. Please, is there anything you can do?”

“Triton being unreasonable, what else is new,” Ursula quips before smirking, “I do believe I can come up with something though. Follow me.”

“Thank the Seven that didn’t end as badly as with the Queen.” Deuce sighs in relief under his breath as we all follow after Ursula.

“What happened Mackey?” Floyd asks as Jade also raises an eyebrow in confusion.

“It’s a long story, we’ll fill you in later.” I tell the twins as we make it into the back of the cave where a large cauldron plus plenty of shelves of ingredients for potions lie, as well as Azul who has his back to the rest of us as he’s going through some shelves.

“Ursula had a kid?” Ace asks Trey in a hiss- right I’m the only one here besides the twins who knows what his mer form looks like. And now Floyd is laughing at him and Jade is poorly attempting to hide his laughter, oh dear…

“As nice as that would be I’m not,” Azul confirms as he turns to face us, “and frankly I’m a little offended that you couldn’t recognise your own senpai.”

“…. And you call me dumb.” Deuce quips as Ace stares in mortified horror.

“Ehe, let’s ignore that,” Trey says quickly changing the topic, “it’s good to see that you’re okay Azul.”

“A pleasure to see you as well Trey-san,” Azul replies in his usual polite business tone, “the same goes for you all. Though, I must asked, have you seen anyone else from our dear school-?”

“No we haven’t seen Jamil-Senpai and even if we did I doubt he’d want to see you.” Ace answers bluntly, stunning Azul in shock and making Floyd devolve into a laughing fit.

“You really redeemed yourself from the dumb question with that one Ace.” Cater tells him as he poorly hides his laughs, making Ace smirk proudly.

“I I was not asking specifically about him!!” Azul deflects while going pink.

“Your face says otherwise.” Riddle adds just as bluntly making Azul turn even more pink.

“Alright, that’s enough teasing darlings,” Ursula says as she swims over alongside her two eels, “about your Triton problem, I do believe I have something that can help.”

“That’s a relief.” Sora admits as the Sea Witch prepares a potion of some kind-

“Psst, what happened,” a (mostly) recovered Azul asks me, “and who on earth are those three?”

“In order, Sora, Donald and Goofy,” I explain, “and long story short, Triton wants all of out of Atlantica because he thinks we’re destined to cause trouble due to Sora’s weapon.”

“Seems about right, the old man has always been overly paranoid.” Jade adds joining in, and after a slight, almost unnoticeable jump Azul nods in agreement.

“And I have just the thing to help,” Ursula adds as she throws what she needs into the cauldron and a puff of smoke comes out, “just a little potion that will make that old fool listen to reason.”

“That’s amazing!” Ariel admits as everyone looks some flavour of impressed, well besides Donald.

“Too good to be true, what’s the catch?” The duck asks bluntly.

“Hey, don’t be rude ducky!!” Floyd tells Donald with a smirk that’s equal parts teasing and making it clear that he should stop to avoid a squeeze.

“To be fair, while some manners are clearly needed,” Riddle adds, “the Great Sea Witch is known for her deals, not charity cases. There is likely a price to this.”

“There is, but nothing too steep, consider it an employee discount given that you’re all friends with my little assistants,” Ursula answers making the Octotrio all look very proud of themselves before she turns to… me?, “all I need is a little bit of your light. A tad for the potion, and a bit more for me to have in supply.”

“My… light?,” I ask feeling very confused, and by the looks of it so is everyone else, “I mean, so long as it’s not dangerous then it’s fine but, what do you mean by that?”

“Oh, you don’t know, how cute,” Ursula says with a chuckle and her eels do the same, “you my boy, are a pure light. Not a speck of darkness lies in your heart, so the dark can’t touch you. They’re also incredibly rare, I thought there was only seven, but you make it at least eight.”

“… Oh.” I mumble as I process that information. I mean I know I’m one of the few who use light magic at NRC but I didn’t think anything of it. That doesn’t explain my… near incident during Malleus’s Overblot but maybe dreams don’t count? Or maybe it only activated once I got here? This is a lot to think about.

“Can’t say I saw that coming.” Goofy admits as he and Donald are clearly off guard while everyone else is still a little confused like I am.

“Looks like you’re pretty special then Silver-senpai.” Deuce says with a small smile.

“Agreed, though given that you’re all clearly in a rush, perhaps we should save the compliments for later?” Jade adds as a polite but firm way to get us back on topic.

“Right,” I agree as I turn back to the Sea Witch, “what do you need me to do for this to work?”

“Just stand there dear, I’ll handle this all,” Ursula says as she holds out her hand, “shell.”

“Right away!” Azul replies as he quickly grabs a nautilus shell and hands it to Ursula, who quickly casts a spell over it and points it at me-!!

“AGH!!!”

“Silver!!” Someone shouts in concern, Riddle I think, but I can barely focus because I have finally learned what it’s like to have your body feel like it’s on fire!! I could’ve gone my whole life without knowing that but now I do I guess- AGH!!!

“Stop it, you’re hurting him!!” Someone else shouts, Sora this time I’m sure-GAH!! Please finish soon please finish soon!!

“Almost done pet, just gotta rev it up!!” Ursula responds loudly-!!

“AAAAGGGGHHHH!!!!”

“SILVER!!!”

“I… I don’t think that was supposed to hurt that much.” Azul… I think, points out awkwardly as the pain finally stops but now I’m fighting not to pass out or hurl. By the Seven I’m a mess.

“Are you alright?” Trey asks as Sora and Floyd- wait, is it… yeah it’s him wow I’m dizzy right now if I had to double check. Either way they help me stay upright while Riddle casts a healing spell which thankfully makes me feel a little better.

“I’ve felt worse…” I tell them because while this is the most sick I’ve felt in a while, nothing is topping how bad I felt during Malleus’s Overblot.

“I’d be surprised, but you are the one who grew up on Lil’s cooking.” Cater adds with a slightly awkward chuckle but his face makes it clear he’s relieved, same with everyone else.

“Lil’s, who’s that?” Sora asks as he keeps holding onto me.

“My father,” I answer, “he’s amazing but… if he offers to cook for you, run.”

“He can’t be that bad can he?” Sora asks-

“He is.” Myself and everyone from NRC says at the same time, sending Ace and Floyd into a fit of sniggers.

“And… presto!!,” Ursula says as she finishes the potion and bottles it up, “slip that to ‘Daddy dearest’ and he’ll be a lot more willing to agree to what you have to say.”

“Amazing,” Ariel admits as she takes the potion when Ursula hands it to her, “magic seems really amazing… making people scream not withstanding.”

“Potions like these usually have their price dear, if you don’t accept that then you won’t get very far,” Ursula tells her, “now then, I can tell you’re all in a hurry so scuttle along now.”

“Will do, thanks so much for this!,” Cater says before turning back to me, “you sure you can swim?”

“I’ll manage…” I assure him as I try to swim out of the cave, but it feels even more awkward than before-!!

“Nice catch Goldfishie,” Floyd quips as he and Riddle catch me before I fall over, “yeah I’d better go with you guys to make sure Jellyfish doesn’t die before ya get there.”

“In that case, we’d better come as well to make sure nothing goes wrong.” Jade adds with a teasing smirk, getting him a shove from Floyd.

“Right,” Azul agrees before turning to Ursula, “is it alright if we go with them?”

“Go right ahead darlings, and no need to rush, I’ll be fine here with my Poopsies while you’re gone.” Ursula replies to assure him- why is Ace making a dumb face.

“Don’t be rude!!” Azul tells him with a growl while the Tweels also glare a little.

“Let her say what she wants,” Deuce adds also annoyed, “and I’m just glad she actually lived up to the legends fully unlike the Queen.”

“Wait, what?” Azul asks looking confused and slightly concerned.

“Tldr, false accusations got out of hand and Rids did an awesome to get us out of it.” Cater quickly explains making Riddle go slightly pink.

“Goldfishie did something cool, what else is new.” Floyd adds with a smirk making Riddle go even more pink.

“Ehe,” Sora chuckles, “still, what’s the plan to give King Triton the potion?”

“Don’t worry, I’ll handle giving it to Daddy, you guys just focus on not letting him see you until I do,” Ariel assures him, “now come on, let’s get swimming.”

“I think we’re gonna need to take the ‘hold on’ approach again.” Goofy adds and once Floyd nods to confirm we all hold onto the Leech twin.

“Please say this will be the last time for today….?” Donald groans in dread.

“Don’t be such a buzzkill Ducky,” Floyd tells him with a slightly angry glare, “I’m gonna be going a bit slower anyway for Jellyfish, so if you hurl after this one that’s on you.”

“How much slower is a bit slower for him?” Trey asks sounding worried.

“Not much,” Jade confirms with a smirk as he takes the third year turtle, “you’d all still do well to hold on.”

“Give me a BREAK!!!” Donald groans before we all zip off, though I do feel that it’s noticeably slower… that or I’m still dizzy and this is affecting my perception either is possible.
