Another book I have been meaning to read ever since I started sailing 5 years ago, mainly thanks to the recommendation by Christian Williams of YouTube fame. Fascinating depiction of California before it became a part of US. The terminology of square rig ship still leaves me scratching my head, even after the circumnavigation of Aubrey-Maturin stories. The epilogues, 24 Years After and 76 Years After, provide striking pictures of fast developments US, and California in particular, have gone through. Then again, Japan was not far behind in the rapid transformation then. It is a charming coincidence that one of the vessels mentioned in the narrative ended her life in Yokohama. Throughout the book, Dana’s intelligence and high morality shine through. He was one of the first Republicans in Massachusetts in the run-up to America’s fateful 1860’s.
