“A mellow headed gal with a love for playing the guitar, Josephine Jamboree is the most down to earth neighbor in Welcome Home. Preferring to skate through life with a carefree attitude and an open mind, Josie is always willing to lend a shoulder to lean on or have a jam sesh with her fellow neighbors!”
According to recovered character notes, Josephine was a later addition to the cast, entering the scene sometime in the 1970’s with her debut episode ‘Make New Friends but Keep Josie,’ in which she would reveal her familial ties to a certain resident mailman. As far as scripts for said episode go, information on Josie’s origin before moving to Home was few and far between, with the only vague explanations given from her being that she ‘just blew in from a few towns over’ and that she had wanted a change of scenery as well as a chance to reconnect with her cousin Eddie again. However, uncovered dialogue for the character suggests that Josie had a tendency to spin tall tales about her life and travels before moving to Home to captivate her newfound neighbors, but whether these stories were fact or fiction was left ambiguous. Josie’s appearances throughout Welcome Home would be limited as the show was taken off air shortly after her introduction, however she gained enough traction to be featured briefly in a few illustrated books and was even considered to be added to the toy line.
Josie’s skits and segments mainly revolved around promoting individuality, working through big emotions, and accepting others’ differences, usually in the form of a song played on her beloved guitar. Sometimes she would be paired with another puppet for these sessions, though they were most often set up as being just between her and the viewer. Josie was often the neighbor looked to most for life advice or to resolve conflicts between other neighbors as the voice of reason, however she was most frequently depicted alongside Eddie Dear during his own segments (usually to provide a song pertaining to whatever craft was at hand) or with her best friends Wendi Wallflower and Andie Rue.
Josie’s puppet was rotated between a hand-and-rod puppet and a string puppet, with evidence suggesting that the latter of which was mainly reserved for her solo segments to make her guitar playing feel more real.
