Season 2 Episode 6
Also known as “Oh gosh I love Oikawa so much”.
So here we are, after the most painful fight in this series. Our protagonists don’t talk to each other anymore and the trust they used to have on each other has vanished.
This leaves us in a very awkward situation, right? But none of them is going to stop trying to improve and become the best.
The episode opens with Hinata and Ukai driving somewhere.
(Ukai driving is my aesthetic, holy shit.)
Meanwhile, Kageyama…
…is bullying kids.
Kageyama pls.
Making kids cry, apparently.
I’M GOING TO SCREAM
OIKAWA PLS
I don’t think I actually have enough cultural understanding to get if Oikawa is being childish or reasonable. I remember reading other translations that spoke about adding a suffix or something like that.
If this is Oikawa being childish, well, that’s not surprising.
If he’s being reasonable, I like the idea of him actually being involved in educating his nephew rather than letting him do whatever he wants.
(But he’s probably being childish, right?)
THIS GUY CAME HERE LOOKING FOR I DON’T KNOW WHAT AND HE WASN’T EXPECTING TO SEE OIKAWA
Meanwhile, in Hinata’s life…
Grandpa has no chill.
Get ready to suffer, Hinata.
CHILL
YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO BE RESTING
RIP KEISHIN
I’m assuming that Grandpa Ukai coached Keishin at some point and just imagine it. Was he as brutal with young Keishin as he is now? Was his own grandpa the one who didn’t let him be a regular? I have many feels.
SHOW SOME RESPECT, KEISHIN
Well well, seems like we have an answer from a respected coach. Hinata 1 –Kageyama 0.
Someone save him omg
Meanwhile, in Kageyama’s life…
The animation staff had a meeting to plan how they would spend the budget for season 2 and accidentally used up 95% of it on this scene.
I’m not complaining.
Oikawa is ridiculously cute here. He tries so hard to be his usual arrogant self but he’s just… so cute. And of course, he does a very childish thing: raising his chin to look at Kageyama from above. “I’m better than you.”
Stop it, Oikawa. We all know about your inferiority complex.
ASKS THE ONE WHO DIDN’T KNOW WHAT HE WAS DOING THERE.
Let’s pretend I didn’t already know this and just let me scream in delight.
You would think at first that this kid is his cousin, right? BUT NOPE. OIKAWA HAS A NEPHEW. A NEPHEW.
Which makes me think… I don’t know how old that kid is, but he can’t be much older than 10 years old. Oikawa is 18. So he became an uncle at the age of 8-10, probably. Pretty much like having a sibling or a cousin. Buuuut since I know Oikawa well, I’m pretty sure that, at some point, he has used the fact that he’s his uncle to feel superior/use his authority to get his nephew to do something.
By the way, I’m a big, big fan of the nephew.
AND KAGEYAMA GREETS THE KID BEFORE GOING BACK TO HIS CONVERSATION WITH OIKAWA
Kageyama, do you even know about a concept called “resting”. Shocking, isn’t it.
But it doesn’t surprise me. I mean, Kageyama has always copied Oikawa, so it’s only natural that he would also copy him at working hard and not resting (even though Oikawa learned later that rest is important).
OIKAWA IS PRETENDING TO IGNORE KAGEYAMA BUT BEFORE KAGEYAMA FINISHES CALLING HIM OIKAWA IS ALREADY TEASING HIM
WE ALL KNOW YOU CAN’T REALLY IGNORE HIM BECAUSE YOU CARE TOO MUCH, IDIOT
(I’m seriously a fan of his nephew.)
(Since we know that Oikawa probably wears contacts, he should really lose one for being a childish asshole. Karma and that sort of thing.)
He’s. So. DONE.
And I get it. I mean… Oikawa, you’re 18 years old, BUT YOU’RE WORSE THAN A CHILD.
(I love the way Oikawa wiggles his fingers, ahaha.)
Shook
This is probably (surely) the most humiliating thing in the world for Kageyama, and yet… Here he is, bending in front of Oikawa to get his help.
Kageyama really cares a lot about Hinata, doesn’t he? I think this part of this scene is overlooked a little but seriously… Even though we only saw how Hinata felt about the fight with Kageyama (about him being a “partner”), we didn’t really see how Kageyama feels.
This is it. This is the answer. He doesn’t want to lose Hinata. He might be proud and stubborn, but Kageyama is willing to toss to Hinata in the best way, and if he has to humble himself to ask Oikawa, of all people, and endure his constant teasing, he will do it. He will do anything to give Hinata the perfect toss.
Oh, shut up, you’re going to listen to him anyway.
HONESTLY, YOU HAVE YOUR ENEMY BEGGING YOU TO LISTEN TO HIM AND YOU JUST LEAVE??? OIKAWA??? YOU’RE WASTING A HUGE OPPORTUNITY
A WILD KAGEYAMA APPEARED
Someone has had an idea.
AND HIS VOICE SUDDENLY CHANGES
MUCH LOWER, MUCH MORE SERIOUS
It almost makes you think he’s going to say something on the lines of “Takeru, leave us alone, we need to talk about this as adults.”
(Tobio suspects something.)
OF COURSE, THIS IS OIKAWA AND HE WILL NEVER BE AN ADULT
EVER
I just… I just lose it every time I see this part. If it wasn’t humiliating enough for Kageyama to have to bow in front of Oikawa, now he has to “pose” for a pic with him.
WHAT ARE YOU EVEN BRAGGING ABOUT, OIKAWA, WHEN YOU HAD THIS OPPORTUNITY BEFORE AND YOU IGNORED IT
RIP IN PIECES
TAKERU IS MY FAVORITE CHARACTER EVER
Well, to be fair, Oikawa could have left after taking that pic, but he will actually listen to Kageyama.
Fffffff, that hand on his head and I’m SO WEAK.
SAVAGE
TAKERU IS SO SAVAGE
THIS KID WILL GROW TO BE A SAVAGE TEEN
THE WORLD ISN’T READY FOR THE GREAT TAKERU OIKAWA
Meanwhile, poor Kageyama is still there, bowing.
Ah, he finally straightened up.
Now, let me talk about Oikawa’s girlfriend dumping him omfg
You would imagine that this guy, officially handsome Oikawa, who’s followed by a million fans who scream over him every time he appears, would have a girlfriend who would pretty much live for him, right? And he might even be the kind of guy who just has a new girlfriend every week since he has enough to choose from.
And yet, that’s not the case. In fact, it was his girlfriend who dumped him and he’s actually concerned about it.
But let’s not miss a small detail here: Oikawa’s girlfriend dumped him and what did he do? HE TOLD HIS NEPHEW. It wasn’t just a “hey, I can spend more time with you since my girlfriend dumped me,” HE ACTUALLY COMPLAINED ABOUT IT, VENTED, MAYBE EVEN CRIED IN FRONT OF THIS KID WHO HAPPENS TO BE HIS NEPHEW.
How childish do you have to be to vent to your nephew, holy shit.
And I bet Takeru gave about zero fucks about it and probably even sassed him.
I love how this guy, Tobio Kageyama, who totally failed his literature exam, tries to explain what’s going on WITH A METAPHOR. Sort of.
And I love Oikawa’s reaction. “Stop with that bullshit.”
Well, here comes the actual problem.
I LOVE HIM SO MUCH, OKAY?
HIS REACTION IS “WHY NOT?”
He’s so done omfg
He’s enjoying this so much.
KAGEYAMA CAME OUT TO HAVE A GOOD TIME AND HE’S HONESTLY FEELING SO ATTACKED RIGHT NOW
And Kageyama can’t even answer back because it’s the truth. Oikawa knows him well.
Where’s the lie.
The thing about this conversation is that Kageyama needed to hear this. With these words. Otherwise he wouldn’t listen.
(He’s so scary. And beautiful. And scary.)
Have you noticed how we have Hinata and Kageyama in different places, with different people (who happen to be mentors), and both get the same answer?
WHERE’S THE LIE
While Hinata is trying to evolve and become stronger, Kageyama is stagnating, which will potentially make him go back to the tyrant he used to be. And that’s where the conflict comes from.
(Did I just screencapped the entire scene? I might have. But, to be fair, I left a couple of lines out.)
HE’S HUMMING
What an asshole.
OH WOW WOW, THIS IS INTERESTING
HIS PHONE
HIS PICTURES
So let me talk about this: everyone sees Oikawa as the kind of person who takes selfies all the time, right? And we certainly see that the first picture he has saved is a selfie (what a precious dork). But then…
He actually took pictures of Takeru. Takeru playing, Takeru eating, Takeru having fun. He’s so proud of his nephew and he wants to have memories of him and he does, in fact, have more pictures of Takeru than of himself, and I think I’m going to cry.
This man definitely has a heart.
(He also takes pictures of beautiful sunsets because who doesn’t.)
I love this brief but meaningful snippet of his personality. Few things speak more about a person than their phone.
AND THAT’S KARMA, MY FRIENDS
YOU DESERVE IT, ASSHOLE
(I love how I go from “he’s beautiful” to “he’s an asshole” in two seconds.)
Back to Hinata’s life…
Keishin is so done.
Grandpa seriously has no chill.
THAT FEEL
RELATABLE
That’s the face of someone who knows he’s gonna die
RIGHT IN THE FACE
RIP HINATA
(I seriously think Hinata dies in every episode. I’ll have to count it one day but I think he gets hit on the face every episode.)
So, we learn about tempos (it’s always nice to learn more about technical stuff like this). Turns out Kageyama and Hinata have been doing it all along without knowing what they were doing.
Ukai has spoken.
THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST SCREENCAPS EVER
CHILL
You know what I love from this? That old Ukai has always been that legendary coach known for being harsh and unforgiving, and yet he’s so kind to Hinata. Not a single time has he told Hinata that he can’t do this or that because he’s small or something like that. You’re small? Okay, we’ll find an alternative, don’t worry.
I love the Ukai family.
I live for these frames.
I think this is the first time I see Ukai smoking in front of one of the kids (whyyyyy).
What a relatable face.
(Ukai is telling him to stop the toss at the point of spike and I didn’t even know that was possible.)
OMFG
DOUBLE PUNCH
I’m dead inside.
So dead inside.
I LOVE YACHI SO MUCH, OKAY???
Asahi is training his jump serve to improve and be more useful to the team and I’m so proud of him.
LET ASAHI SERVE, NOYA
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
#PoorYachi
#PoorHinata
Noya complaining about tossing to Suga LMAO
HE’S BEEN PROMOTED
Well, so the episode closes with the team making their last preparations before the go to Tokyo for a full week to train. I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE KARASUNO SUFFER WITH THE REST OF THE TEAMS.
But Hinata and Kageyama are still angry at each other and everything hurts.
...I hope you enjoyed my long thesis on how much I love Oikawa LMAO
#haikyuu#i've been waiting for so long to write about this episode#one of my favorite episodes ever so no wonder why i wrote so much#it's hilarious to look back to this episode now#as in... season 2 and oikawa is warning kageyama about becoming a tyrant again#two seasons later we'll get the opposite: kageyama being told that he's a saint#lmfao the irony#season 2 episode 6#long post#haikyuu mega-post
