MISS ME
Romantic Firsts meme
She’d disappeared deep into the Castle’s underground passages at the Security Team’s insistence. While they’d needed to lock down the ballroom as quickly and as efficiently as possible, the problem of the Princess dissolving into loud, unladylike laughter in front of much of the world’s nobility was just as troubling as the four dozen makangos scattered across the floor, climbing up tablecloths and hiding beneath the hems of the various ballgowns that had stopped swirling when their wearers shrieked in horror. Sonia had her suspicions of who had arranged the party-crashing animals to wreak havoc during the annual Masquerade Ball but she’d had little time to investigate as she hastened through the various stone hallways, illuminated by few light bulbs, on the way back to her room. Careful not to trip on the forest green tulle of her skirt, Sonia climbed the steep stairs before reaching into the bodice of her gown, retrieving the small silver key she kept there. Quickly unlocking the door, she slipped through the back entrance of her brightly lit closet. Nearly three times the size of her dorm room at her new school, it kept not only the shelves upon shelves of every possible outfit a Princess would need, but her collection of royally-approved artillery and her private access to the network of hidden passages under Novoselic Castle.
A maid had been waiting for her there, frantic as she’d been sent to attend to helping the Princess change her attire without witnessing the chaos downstairs for herself. Sonia had tried to explain it through breathless laughter, barely keeping still as the young woman unlaced and unbuttoned as quickly and carefully as possible, organizing the mess of a gown, its delicate fabric now shredded at the hem by the playful animals, as well as the various coordinating undergarments, shoes, and jewels that Sonia had been instructed to wear. Slipping into a pair of silk pajamas, she’d only begun to catch her breath as she pushed open the main door to the closet to find Cecily, her newly-assigned personal secretary waiting near her desk with a tablet and a smirk.
“And you were complaining about having to return for this year’s Ball, assuming it wouldn’t be exciting,” The brunette remarked with a grin, an expression Sonia knew she couldn’t show to many in the castle. The abrupt end to one of the most important events of the year was a serious matter and needed to be dealt with quietly and quickly, but both Sonia and her secretary, only six years older than the girl she worked for, were consumed by giggles again.
“Yes, I was wrong!” Sonia replied cheerfully, sinking into the chair at her desk where several plates of sandwiches, two-bite appetizers, and the piece de resistance, sixteen perfectly-arranged petit-fours, waited for her alongside a glass of water and a pot of tea. The first meal she’d been allowed all day. The tablet meant Cecily was there to finish the last bit of work she needed to for the day, but Sonia was in no mood to discuss tomorrow’s schedule. Taking a bite of an apple and brie sandwich, she leaned back in her chair with the biggest smile she’d worn since she’d arrived home the previous week. With the doors opened to her balcony, she had the perfect view of footmen attempting to herd and sweep the bushy-tailed rodents out of the castle and into the gardens. “Has Gabriel figured out who exactly set them loose yet? I’d love to send them flowers! Oh, Gundham would have loved seeing such madness unfold and by makango, no less. Though I think he might feel more concern for the animals than the mortified aristo-”
She paused, swallowing the last of the sandwich and her words. New to her job right out of university, Cecily’s proximity in age and staff position to her meant that part of her duties involved listening to whatever Sonia had to say. Five months into her school year abroad and upon her return home, Sonia had spoken some of all of her classmates but mostly about the quiet, mysterious boy with the cute hamsters, not to mention the full menagerie of beasts he tended to on campus. Only recently had he started to introduce her to his various charges, and now Cecily was forced to be the listener of every story the Princess could recall of meeting the animals. Sonia reached for the glass of water instead, busying her mouth with something else besides sharing yet another tale from Hope’s Peak that involved him.
But her blue eyes widened when Cecily sighed and closed her tablet. “Your Highness, may I speak frankly?”
“Of course, always,” Sonia nodded briskly, setting the glass aside before reaching for another sandwich. If she willed it enough, perhaps Cecily wouldn’t mention the unspoken, prominent truth Sonia herself refused to say.
The older woman didn’t dare sit in Her Royal Highness’ presence unless asked, but she leaned against the wall, looking down and concerned at Sonia like a sister. Without siblings to look to or parents she could fully open up to, Cecily was the one of the few people in all of Novoselic Castle the Princess could speak to candidly. Now, it was time for her to do the same. “Have you considered simply telling Gundham that you miss him? And please do not use time differences as an excuse, I’m well-aware you are texting your other friends at all hours of the night.”
And there it was, what she couldn’t bring herself to admit aloud because once she did, Sonia would be sure of two things: First, she was starting to put what had happened, the series of events that resulted in her attending Hope’s Peak in the first place, behind her. And second, she’d have to attribute her growing friendship with Gundham as being a significant factor. She’d left for Japan in March in eagerness to learn more about the culture and to make new, real friends. She had not, however, intended or expected to find anything more than that. “I...I can’t,” Sonia sighed, setting her food aside in favor of hanging her head, staring into her lap instead, “I do not think he wants to hear such things from me. And besides, I’m quite sure that I mostly pester him, insisting that he join the class when he much prefers to be alone or just always asking questions. There’s really no point in saying, well, anything that disturbs the status quo of our friendship.”
A push away from the wall and Cecily had moved to stand beside Sonia, a hand patting her shoulder in reassurance. Sonia didn’t need to recall tomorrow’s list of duties and appearances. Right now, she needed emotional support. “Well, I have to say it’s refreshing to see you act like a sixteen-year-old girl instead of a Princess,” The brunette chuckled, shaking her head as Sonia raised her gaze to meet hers. “We’ll go over your schedule in the morning. Please eat something and go to bed, it will be another busy day tomorrow before you’re set to return to Tokyo.”
“Thank you, that is much appreciated,” Sonia managed a weak smile in return, reaching for one of the cakes instead. In crises of confidence, sweets often helped soften the blow.
“Oh, and Your Highness?”
Sonia had just polished off the first petit-four, licking some of the icing from her fingers before reaching for the second. “Yes, Cecily?”
“Don’t underestimate yourself or the strength the Crown provides for you. You might have the same worries as the average girl but you’re far from ordinary.”
Sonia nodded once at her secretary’s advice before she was left alone with her food. While Cecily been employed to help advise the Princess, matters of the heart had not been a part of her contract. Reaching for the full plate of cakes, Sonia ventured out onto her balcony, taking refuge in the chilly fall air, the full moon, and the eager squeaks of the makango below, all too pleased to have picked over the buffet.
