16. One person pouting, only to have it removed by a kiss from the other person.

This was the day Twilight had been waiting for. Six months ago the museum had announced it would be opening a new exhibit about Starswirl’s world-famous breakthroughs in astronomy and the self-proclaimed biggest collection of his personal tools and belongings. The thing Twilight had been looking forward to the most was getting to look at the in-depth display they had made of scanned pages from Starswirl’s elusive field journal, which had recently been discovered in the attic of one of his decedents. 

Eagerly clutching her pre-ordered ticket in one hand and clasping Sunset’s hand in the other, Twilight practically bounced to the entrance of the museum. They were the first ones there. Good thing I planned ahead so we wouldn’t have to wait in line, she thought, smiling to herself. However, when she caught sight of the double doors it occurred to her that something wasn’t right. The lights were off inside the building, and a quick test of the door handles told her the entrance was locked. It was then that she saw the printed sign taped to the inside of the glass paneling.

“Closed for inspection?!” she asked incredulously, “On opening day for their newest exhibit?!”

“You’d think they would make an announcement about that kind of thing,” Sunset said.

Twilight quickly pulled out her phone to check the museum’s social media update stream.

“They just posted one a few minutes ago,” Twilight said, “Apparently there were some safety concerns. WHY TODAY?!”

Sunset reached up to put her arm around Twilight’s shoulders.

“I’m sorry, Twi. I know you were really looking forward to seeing the Starswirl exhibit, but we can always come back and see it when they’re open again,” she said.

“But I spent all week writing up a list of the most interesting fun facts about Starswirl to go along with the exhibit and I was so excited to share them with you,” Twilight said, her face sinking into a pout.

“Aw, Twilight,” Sunset said, leaning over to give her a gentle kiss.

Twilight smiled despite herself.

“Tell you what,” Sunset continued, “Why don’t we go to that frozen yogurt place you like and you can tell me all about Starswirl so I’ll be ready for the exhibit?”

“Really?” Twilight asked, her smile growing wider.

“Yeah, really!”

Twilight reached over and linked her arm with Sunset’s.

“Okay, well I guess I should start at the beginning with...”

Sunset and Twilight - Shades of Grey sketch :V

tbh im thinking on another Sunset x Starlight sketch ...

I was rewatching Legend Of Everfree for the millionth time and I noticed something. This is right after Twilight and Timber were having that flirty banter about gems. The rest of the group saw them and, while Rainbow, AJ, and Rarity are busy giggling and looking knowingly at each other, Sunset doesn’t take her eyes off Twilight. Her body language is closed off and a bit guarded. Her face looks kind of wistful and sad. My headcanon? Sunset caught feelings for Twilight first and they started to manifest around the time they went to Camp Everfree. 

However, at this point in the story Sunset and Twilight haven’t known each other long. Twilight is still really insecure about her friendships and I think that Sunset is trying her best to show Twilight she is there for her by being a supportive friend. She wants to be happy that Twilight is getting out there and talking to Timber, but seeing Twilight flirting with someone else hurts. Maybe Sunset is afraid of being/seeming selfish. She has worked so hard to change into a better person and make friends. What if telling Twilight how she feels gets in the way of their friendship or makes people think that she’s being jealous or possessive by butting in between Twilight and Timber?

So she buries her feelings and does what she can to support Twilight (but still takes just about every opportunity she can to make physical contact with Twilight because that’s one of the main ways she shows support and affection). Even when she suspects Timber might be up to something and she wants to protect Twilight from potential danger she goes looking for proof first because she doesn’t want to upset Twilight if it isn’t true. During the ball Twilight and Timber are flirting and then Twilight comes outside to stand by Sunset and we see a moment wordless banter between them. 

Here Sunset is once again playing the role of supportive friend but her blush and nervous body language (like sipping at her drink) give us a glimpse of the feelings she’s been trying to hide. At first glance it might seem like Twilight is blushing because she’s embarrassed, the way you get when your friends supportively tease you about a crush, and that might be at least partially the case but her looking away and sipping her drink at the end suggest she might be processing some feelings toward Sunset too.

During Rollercoaster Of Friendship Sunset and Twilight spend pretty much the whole day together trying to beat the ring toss game. They’ve obviously grown closer and their mutual love of conquering challenges makes them a great team so we start to see that dynamic growing and flourishing. They already have an intense bond because of their shared magical trauma but during that summer they start to really get to know each other.

Fast forward to Spring Breakdown. At this point they have known each other for the better part of a year and we see a lot of moments where Sunset is gazing lovingly at Twilight or being supportive but there is also a moment when Twilight says she wouldn’t trade Sunset for anything in the world (I talked more about all of that in this other post). I think that’s when Twilight realizes she has feelings for Sunset too. That is when she has her “Oh” moment about how much Sunset really means to her. I think it’s after that point that they would start dating.

If you were in charge of the Equestria Girl franchise, how would you develop Sunset and Sci-Twi's relationship through the movies and specials? At point point woud they start dating?

As I’ve talked about in my Sciset headcanon timeline posts (part 1, part 2, part 3), I headcanon that Sunset and Twilight start dating after Spring Breakdown based on the canon material. I don’t know that I would change the point at which they got together because it feels natural that it would take some time for them to develop that kind of relationship. Keep in mind that Sci Twi hasn’t even really had friends before at the start of Friendship Games, much less a romantic relationship, and that Sunset has had to learn how to have positive relationships of any kind with people and is still kind of insecure about people actually wanting to spend time with her. This means that there would be obstacles on both sides that they would have to overcome to get to a place where a romantic relationship between them would work. I really like the idea of them taking the time to address those issues and help each other in the context of a friendship before they get together.

If I were in charge, developing the relationship would start with not scrapping that Sciset duet (see timeline part 3) from Friendship Games because it sets the stage for a soulmate dynamic (which they already kind of have going so it seems really fitting). I would maybe even have them sing a reprise and definitely have them talk about and connect over the points from the song. I loved the indirect love confession in Spring Breakdown but if I were to make the next special after that it would include direct love confessions from both of them and probably a kiss. This would take place before Sunset’s Backstage Pass. During Sunset’s Backstage Pass I would also include some couple-y things like them holding hands while they look for Pinkie Pie or them casually using pet names for each other and no one else. I might even have them exchange some kind of matching jewelry (bracelets maybe?) with attached lockets or have them get some kind of matching bag charm or something else they could wear that would remind each of them of the other and let everyone else know they’re together. 

In short, I’d keep the place in the story the same but I wouldn’t leave their relationship implied and I would give them even clearer soulmate vibes because they deserve it.
