The Trainee Episode 8, Tensions
I had a premonition from this week's episode about what online reactions to the conclusion of The Trainee will be, and I want to take this chance to preface the discourse. Episode 8 lays out all the tensions The Trainee utilizes to drive its plot and character development. Because of the specific topics it explores and their relevance to both our lives and our tv viewership, I expect no matter how the show ends, people are gonna have oPiNioNs. To me, that relevance is a sign of a show's success, whether I would make the same decisions or not, especially when the show addresses it with as much thoroughness as The Trainee does and braids them all so well together into every element of the show. Spoilers ahead.
Personal vs. Work-life
Tumblr media
These values hold the biggest tension in the series, as we saw how unhealthy balance between the two caused so much conflict last week. This episode gave us more balance. After the last couple episodes, I had started wondering if we had forgotten about Ryan's homelife (I miss Ink :'(). How refreshing to get so much time outside of work in this episode, then!
Of course, we now know two characters live at the same location as their family's businesses. We get Ryan doing his printer duties at home again--interestingly dressed in blue after GMMTV this week officially released his "green guy" color scheme in the series (check out @respectthepetty 's rundown of character color schemes and their meanings for the show). This color change suggests Ryan's confidence and security with his home business duties. We also got to see that Ba Mhee's grown up in a home business environment in the form of her family's restaurant. This gives us an unexpected parallel between them. It personally had me considering their relationship to workplaces compared to the other characters.
Despite their different attitudes towards it, both Ryan and Ba Mhee seem to represent the potential for growth in a workplace environment instead of depending on pure passion and confidence in a field. They grew up in workplace environments that they didn't get to choose and where they were likely expected to do basic jobs to support without needing to be dedicated in a way that they caused them to feel married to the occupation and kept them from living their own personal lives. They don't necessarily think of a workplace as an environment where they need a professional version of their self to be "turned on." It's quite the opposite from their mentors and romantic counterparts Jane, Judy, and Tae.
Ryan's personal life, in the form of his best friend, waltzed into his work environment, which caused Jane's personal feelings--those things he tries so hard to bury deep down and keep out of sight of his coworkers--to emerge outside of his full awareness as he shouted orders directly to Ryan to the point that the clients noticed.
Tumblr media
Whereas Ryan and Jane had thoughts of their professional life enter into their personal life, Ba Mhee had her professional world phsyically crash in on her personal life, as Judy met her unannounced at her family's restaurant. While I naively expected Judy to have breached that line to apologize to Ba Mhee for taking advantage of her mentor position, the show had different plans. I'm so intrigued to see how this dynamic plays out, and this moment in the episode was what led me to believe the show CANNOT resolve this tension adequately for all of its audiences because of the other two tensions the show is exploring, which have dramatic impacts on how we interpret an appropriate resolution of this first tension.
Maturity vs. Immaturity
I'm chose the language of 'maturity' specifically to point to the multiple questions the shows asked about these romances so far. We've gotten references to age between the two (Ba Mhee notes the significance of the age gap between her and Judy, Jane has not answered Ryan's question about his age). We see the differences in status and direct supervision roles at the office, which also comes with differences in knowledge about the field.
However, we also get to see the levels of maturity with which these characters deal with their problems and mistakes. Two trajectories have occurred in the show so far within this category. Ryan and Ba Mhee have grown in their abilities to take on responsibility, and I expect we will see how some of the aspects with which they entered into the office, while seemingly 'immature' are actually more mature and necessary to create a healthy and functional office environment. On the other hand, we have the peak ideal of professionalism Jane and Judy demonstrated at the beginning of the series. We can all admit that it was hot af to see people just getting the job done. The last two episodes are deconstructing the myth of these figures to give us more human characters with their own flaws and blind-spots. @dropthedemiurge has a great mini write-up about the contrast between the mature way the interns deal with their problems in this episode compared to the immature responses of the mentors.
Tumblr media
I love that episode 8 is called "New Shoes" because we finally got to shift to Jane's perspective (and Tae viewed things from Ba Mhee's perspective). Everyone is becoming more understandable to one another in an equalizing fashion. Where does that equalization land us in the romance questions, though? How you feel about appropriate age gaps and office romance is, to some extent, going to be quite cultural. (Looking up Thai laws, it looks like a few things we've seen in the series, specifically with Judy if considered unwanted by Ba Mhee, would have crossed the line into sexual harassment).
Whatever your perspective, The Trainee has infused the series with the serious issues of sexual behavior in the workplace, from Ba Mhee and Pie's sexual harassment by a crew member, to Jane's less obvious sexual harassment by the company's client, Joy, to the client choosing to work with the company because of Judy and Ba Mhee's looks. To address and satisfactorily resolve these trends of sexual harassment fully would take quite a feat, and even then, in the way it will inevitably run up against the two romances at the heart of the show, its conclusion will have to wrestle with the final tension, which is...
Fantasy vs. Reality
Tumblr media
The film industry is a dream factory, and this show absolutely ADORES contrasting dreams and reality. Look at Ryan and then Jane's confused daydreaming of each other throughout the morning. Look at how Ryan and Jane must stand-in for lovers for a lighting check. Look at how the stage lighting runs through the vents as they have their conversation about the shoes. We are constantly reminded throughout the show that the show itself is being constructed for our entertainment within a film industry itself. We love a meta romance!
Romance in life and in film lives in an in-between space between fantasy and reality. You have to give yourself over to romantic moments and believe in love and connection and magic, but you also have to work at relationships and compassion and paying the bills, etc. Actors and creators in romance have to make the audience believe in the reality of the love and affection on screen, and there's plenty of documentation of more than a few pairings occurring through the creation of romance works, with just as many people hating the people they're creating the appearance of romance with. The BL/QL world goes double for this confusion of fantasy and reality with the fan service of lead branded pairings and such.
Most important to The Trainee, though, is the history of the Boss-Employee trope in BLs. Its got its critics and its lovers, with great reasons on both sides if you ask me, and that's the biggest reason I can't imagine The Trainee pleasing everyone. It loves the tension between reality and fantasy, maturity and immaturity, and the personal and the workplace too much! It can't fully land on one side, and that's going to upset people on both sides. But I personally will relish it, however they choose to conclude, because few shows are taking on these kind of tensions with such dexterity and attention to detail.

Love that ask! I've also wondered what the rest of the tour makes of how absurdly close Roger and Rafa are. Not to stir the pot but I think it bothers Novak - in the sense that he seems to consider Rafa his biggest rival and has been vocal about that many times. It has to rankle a bit that Rafa doesn't feel the same and openly says Roger is the most important player in his career, whereas Novak would say that about Rafa. He also looked uncomfortable at times getting a front row seat to the Fedal love affair. Those 3 definitely have a complicated history with each other but I guess it is what it is.
Yea i get what you mean, it's a bit strange the dynamic between the 3 but it also developed like this because of the different kind of timelines between their rivalries that I talked about in the previous asks.
In a sense, I feel for Novak a bit as he's always going to be the odd one out, he always says that Nadal and Federer are his greatest rivals (because they are), but they never really say that about him specifically. And this is not due to any discredit on his competitiveness whatsoever it's just the way their career histories come to clash with one another. Federer and Nadal were fundamentals to each other's first rise to power, but when Novak started joining them, both Roger and Rafa were already at the top (they've both been world number 1s). It's a different sort of camaraderie, in a way that Rafa and Roger never really had to 'prove' themselves the way Novak had to with them, by breaking in to their duopoly.
It's also fascinating because Rafa was technically closer to Andy and Novak's generation than Roger's, they're practically age-wise peers. But because Rafa peaked so early (when he was 17), his 'growing up' on the tour is actually with the likes of Roddick, Federer, Hewitt, Ferru etc. You can actually see this in the early days, he was much more in a 'friend-like' relationships with Andy and Novak compared to how he was with Roger. I remember reading an article of an interviewer who was tailing Rafa for the day and when they arrived at the parking lot of the practice courts somebody was making crazy noises and calling his name from the car across them. It was Novak and Rafa came over to joke with him etc and the interviewer said that he was surprised how well they actually know each other. Judy Murray also said that Rafa was Andy's constant FIFA buddy, they used to play football matches on playstation until midnight during tours, but also online when they were both at homes. This was all before Murray Djokovic started challenging for titles seriously of course. There's actually a lot of insights to the early tour days that we missed from this golden generation of tennis. Like it or not, they technically grew up together and saw each other more than their own families, it's a bit like school! Except these players moved continents every few weeks or so. Novak and Andy have actually known each other since they were 12, they were practically childhood buddies. I've also read some crazy stories about the spanish armada pranking andy roddick etc during the old days and I would pay really good money to see a reality tv coverage of these days! It kinda makes me miss the old generation of tennis, so many of them are gone now 🥺
Anyhow, back to Roger though, he was actually quite a bit detached from the group in the early 2000s I feel, just because his 'actual generation' that is hewitt, etc were retiring and he's stuck with this influx of new kids who are starting to be really2 good (*ehem* cue a certain Spaniard) after 4 or 5 years of really boring competition. Everybody likes him tho, because ofc he's Roger, and Roddick actually said he was the first World Number One that he actually genuinely couldn't dislike lol. But I suppose he was more of a 'father' figure, he was the world number one, and everybody just put him on a pedestal.
The only person that Roger actually genuinely connect to in these early days, even before their rivalries fully blossomed was Rafa, I guess. The relationship Rafa had with Roger in the beginning was very different, and both of them said this as well these days, it was more of a schoolboy idolation with mutual respect and bond. Even then it was a different relationship than what Rafa had with his spanish teammates or age group peers. Rafa, in a sense I think, was the first one who actually broke this generational gap. By breaking into the scene, he's someone who, interestingly, became sort of the connecting string between his age group peers with the 'top guys', specifically because it was obvious that Federer liked him a lot lol. And Rafa was actually the first one who actually forced Roger to rethink his game, and reshifted his perception of their rivalries. He said this himself, he kinda have to force himself to accept that he now has an equal, a rival that will stay and challenge him for good.
I think we talk a lot about this 'mentor-mentee', 'idol-fan' dynamic between Roger and Rafa but what really really shifted their dynamic forever and solidified their bond I feel was when both of them had to sort of shift in the spectrum and fully accept each other as equals. I feel like this was a huge growing up moment not only in their careers but also in their lives.
By the time Novak came around, it was almost impossible to break into this detente respect that Federer-Nadal have built between themselves, although Novak had no difficulty in breaking their ranks. Personally, though, I don't think Djokovic had any qualms about the bond that he clearly KNOWS Federer-Nadal have and if I can respect him for anything, I guess it's for this. He might be a bit bitter of being the odd one out early on but I think this year's Laver Cup especially, really really showed how Andy and Novak accepted their roles in this weird four-way rivalries dynamic. That they will always be in the background in terms of personal bonds, and Andy even goes so far to say that it was right that Roger should finish with Rafa, not anybody else.
It's a strange kind of aura that everyone sorts of knows they're witnessing something untouchable, something special that's unbreakable in their bubble. A good comparison, randomly, is The Beatles. Both four beatles are extremely close with each other and considered each other brothers, but even then they knew Lennon-McCartney had a special bond, and George and Ringo would never try to break into their bubble when they were writing songs together.
So there you have it, a completely, unprompted, presumably presumptous long essay that is probably untrue lol. But one asked and one shall receive anon. One shall receive.

“Smells like cheese, looks like ham… [takes a bite of sandwich] Oh, no problem. It’s chicken.” Rest assured, Grue Believers. Nothing about this movie resembles chicken.   Directed by: Gordon Hessler
Writing Credits: Christopher Wicking (screenplay); Peter Saxon (novel)
Selected Cast:
Vincent Price as Dr. Browning

First, take a killer film title and an equally killer poster. Then grab a bizarre tale that includes long (yet exciting) car chases, vampires (sort of), Frankenstein (sort of), Nazis (sort of), super Vulcan nerve pinches (sort of), and a bubbling vat of acid. Then cast it with three iconic horror actors and what do you get? Scream and Scream Again from Amicus, directed by Gordon Hessler, and featuring Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, and Peter Cushing. Even if all three are never in the same scene, the results are oddly compelling, yet … goofy and frustrating. Despite the negatives, this film has grown a cult following. What might the Grue Crew make of it?
At the time of this writing, Scream and Scream Again is available to stream from Tubi and Freevee, as well as various PPV options. The film is available on physical media as a Special Edition Blu-ray from Kino Lorber.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. Get to know me (ask game)
So, ummm, I’m finally getting back to this after @recentadultburnout tagged me all the way back in August, which I’m ashamed to admit I haven’t answered to in all this time. I never forgot though, so here I finally am, six months later, doing it after all. Hope it still counts!
Rules: bold the ones that are true and tag 10 people to do it.
APPEARANCE
blonde hair // I prefer loose clothing to tight clothing // I have one or more piercings // I have at least one tattoo // I have dyed or highlighted my hair // I have gotten plastic surgery // I have or had braces // I sunburn easily // I have freckles // I paint my nails // I typically wear makeup // I don’t often smile // I am pleased with how I look // I prefer Nike to Adidas // I wear baseball hats backwards
For a brief period around 7th grade, I liked to wear makeup and nail polish before I realized they’re really not for me. In general I’d say I don’t really give much of an effort to my appearance, which is why almost nothing is bold in this section.
HOBBIES & TALENTS
I play a sport // I can play an instrument // I am artistic // I know more than one language // I have won a trophy in some sort of competition // I can cook or bake without a recipe // I know how to swim // I enjoy writing // I can do origami // I prefer movies to tv shows // I can execute a perfect somersault // I enjoy singing // I could survive in the wild on my own // I have read a new book series this year // I enjoy spending time with friends // I travel during work or school breaks // I can do a handstand
I play the piano and the guitar, and many years ago I used to play the violin, but I was never good at it.
I speak English, German and Spanish fluently, and I’ve been learning Chinese for just over two years. I’m also currently trying to learn Portuguese, Russian, and Thai, but I haven’t gotten very far with those yet.
The number of new book series I’ve read this year depends on your definition. I’ve read the new volumes of 2ha and Heaven Official’s Blessing that have come out, if that counts. Other than that, I read Judy I. Lin’s A Magic Steeped in Poison and A Venom Dark and Sweet (if a duology counts as a series), two amazing fantasy books set in China and based on Chinese traditions like tea-brewing. And then there was a German fantasy trilogy by Marah Woolf called Wicca Creed.
I travel sometimes, but it really depends on the circumstances. I still travel with my parents sometimes, but I very rarely enjoy vacation with friends for some reason.
RELATIONSHIP
I am in a relationship // I have been single for over a year // I have a crush // I have a best friend who I’ve known for ten years // my parents are together// I have dated my best friend // I am adopted // my crush has confessed to me // I have a long distance relationship // I am an only child // I give advice to my friends // I have made an online friend // I met up with someone I have met online
I loved @recentadultburnout’s comment on this, and because I relate so much, I will put their quote here: I have been single all my life, actually. Not even a single crush. Probably an aro.
I’m still friends with my neighbor, who I’ve known all my life. Also some friends from school I’ve known for that long.
AESTHETICS
I have heard the ocean in a conch shell // I have watched the sun rise // I enjoy rainy days // I have slept under the stars // I meditate outside // the sound of chirping calms me // I enjoy the smell of the beach // I know what snow tastes like // I listen to music to fall asleep // I enjoy thunderstorms // I enjoy cloud watching // I have attended a bonfire // I pay close attention to colors // I find mystery in the ocean // I enjoy hiking on nature paths // autumn is my favorite season
I’ve probably watched the sun rise more than once in my life and just can’t remember because I was a child or something, but the only time I consciously remember was this August when I went to China for a summer program and our group went to climb Lao Shan, a mountain near Qingdao.
Tumblr media
I love rainy days and thunderstorms, but mostly when I don’t have to leave the house and can watch from a warm, dry place.
I often have trouble falling asleep, so I usually listen to my Sleepy Songs playlist or watch Bob Ross.
In real life, I don’t really pay attention to colors, but @respectthepetty has taught me to at least do it in BLs.
I think the ocean is hiding more things than we can imagine, considering we’ve only explored about 5% of it.
I don’t enjoy sports, but I like hiking (even though I don’t do it a lot) because it’s very calming and you can just let your mind drift.
MISCELLANEOUS
I can fall asleep in a moving vehicle // I am the mom friend // I live by a certain quote // I like the smell of sharpies // I am involved in extracurricular activities // I enjoy Mexican food // I can drive a stick shift // I believe in true love // I make up scenarios to fall asleep // I sing in the shower // I wish I lived in a video game // I have a canopy above my bed // I am multiracial // I am a redhead // I own at least 3 dogs
I think it’s different in the US (and this particular point feels very American to me), but I live in Germany and here you usually have to be able to use a stick shift to get your license.
I sing in the shower, but only when no one else is home.
This was fun! I don’t know enough people to tag 10 of them, so I’ll just throw some tags into the wild and see who feels like doing it (no pressure, of course): @ellaspore (who I haven't talked to in way too long), @biochemjess, @majestictortoise, @respectthepetty, @firstkanaphans

This time last year, what was happening in your life? It’s pretty wild to look back at this time last year and have absolutely how badly things would take a turn in a couple months. I really wasn’t doing well health wise, but I never thought I’d wind up in the hospital for 3 months with everything so out of whack and almost dying twice (I did once).
Did you/will you have coffee or some other form of caffeine today? Of course I will. Ya’ll should know me by now. I have my Starbucks Doubleshot white chocolate energy drink right now.
Who did you last have a text conversation with and what was it about? My mom. She had asked me to do something for her and I had some questions about it. I also had to show her a couple things.
Are there regular trains in and out of your town/city? Yeah.
Do you bathe your pets regularly? She gets bathed every few months. It’s actually better not to do it too often.
Do you have a mailbox or do you collect your mail from the post office? We have a mailbox.
What was the last animal you saw, and was it a pet? Yes, I last saw my doggo.
Have you ever had an ear infection? I have. They’re quite unpleasant.
If you could watch any TV series right now, what would it be? I want to finish the rest of the new season of You. I watch it with my mom and brother, so with their varying schedules it can take us awhile to finish a show. If I were watching it by myself, I would have been done in two days (one day for the first half that was released and another day for the rest).
Would you have any clue when your best friend last got their hair cut? I think my mom cut her hair a couple months ago.
Someone messages you just as you’re about to go to sleep. Do you reply? A text message? I likely wouldn’t even check it. Or, I’d read it and not reply until later on.
Do you grind your teeth, and if so, why do you do it? No. My doggo does and it’s really cringey because you can hear her teeth grinding together.
Have you ever been hospitalized due to dehydration? Well, dehydration was part of it. It was a small part of many issues I had going on.
Is there anything you need to remember to do before the day ends? Hmm. Nope, don’t think so.
When you listen to music with headphones, do you keep the volume low enough to hear surrounding noise faintly, or do you blast it? I like to be able to hear a little background noise to be aware in case something important happens or someone calls me.
What’s your favorite online radio site? I very rarely use them anymore, but I do like Pandora.
Do your parents have any authority over who you date? I mean, no, seeing how I’m 33 years old, but that being said their opinion very much matters to me. It’s important to me that my parents like them and they like my parents. If there were any issues or concerns, I’d want to hear them. Ultimately, it’s my decision but I would listen to what they had to say and take it seriously. I’d want to be able to work it out and not have any issues.
How many different shades of nail polish do you have? Zero.
What did you have for breakfast this morning? My usual Cream of Wheat.
Are you lucky enough to have an ice maker in your refrigerator door? I wouldn’t consider myself lucky if I had one or unlucky that I don’t. I don’t even use ice, so it doesn’t matter to me.
Are you the type to wake up before the sun has even risen? Some nights, even having taken my sleepy time meds, I wake up a couple times before the sun comes up. It’s super annoying. Thankfully. I typically go back to sleep, but I love the nights when I’m actually able to sleep all the way through.
Have you ever watched an anime series, start to finish? I have, actually. I can’t remember what It was called at the moment, but it was a show a friend had gotten me into.
Do you feel the need to rant about anything right now? If so, go for it. I mean, I certainly could, but I’ll spare you for now.
Do you have a favorite towel? What color is it? No.
Have you seen any films with Judy Garland in them?: I’ve only seen The Wizard of Oz.
How did you feel when you woke up today? Why? >> tired. kind of sad. because that's just how it is sometimes? I don't know, man. <<<< Oh, do I understand that feeling all too well.
Who was the last person you messaged on Facebook? My mom.
When was the last time you saw them? This afternoon before she went to work.
Do you have a friend named Nick? What’s his favourite food? No.
What are you listening to? A YouTube video about Disneyland ride history.
What year are you/did you graduate? I graduated with my BA in 2015.
Are you obsessed with anything? I tend to get that way with shows and movies I really enjoy.
Do you prefer waffles or pancakes? Mmmm, waffles.
Do you prefer non-diet or diet soda? Non-diet.
Do you like seafood? Blech, no.
Are you craving anything right now? My Doritos Locos taco that I’m about to eat.
Do you dress appropriately for your age? I think my leggings and oversized graphic tees are appropriate attire.
If McDonald’s sold hot dogs, would you buy them? Yeah, I think I would.
How long is your hair? It’s choppy and short. My ends barely reach my neck.
Do you like your neighbors? I don’t have any issues with them. I don’t even know them.
What’s your school motto? --
Has a bird ever flown into your window?  Nooo.
Which word did you say first, mama or dada? I think I said, “mama”, first.
How old were you when you learned to walk? I never got to that stage thanks to my accident at 7 months old that left me paralyzed from the waist down.
What was your first pet’s name? His name was Buster.
How many kids were in your class in kindergarten? I think there were like 30 or so of us.
Who was your best friend in elementary? Back in the early elementary school days best friends kinda changed all the time. It was a very loosely used term. I’d say my real best friends I met in 5th grade.
Who was the best athlete in your freshman class? I don’t recall. I didn’t pay attention to the sports stuff.
What teacher did all the high school boys/girls have a crush on? There wasn’t one to my knowledge.
Where do you see yourself in a year? I hope by this time next year I’ll actually be able to do things again, travel, and gain back my independence.
If you were able to change one thing about yourself, what would it be? My stubbornness. The amount of issues its caused me that could have totally been avoided...
Are you content just blending in with the crowd? I never want to stand out in the crowd. I just want to do my thing, pay no mind to me.

Don't get it twisted: AI and fascism are fully buddied up. The only reason America tolerates artists is because the multi-billion dollar entertainment industry benefits late stage capitalists. AI's goal is to monopolize the means of production and control the narrative.
The successful societies of history venerated artists and thinkers; even if there was no direct art -> profit pipeline, they acknowledged that beauty is value in and of itself. Art is a statement, it's a symbol of grace and power, it is necessary for a free society to function.
Art is also the antithesis of propaganda. Freedom of expression allows societies to stay educated and informed. If our government is concerned about foreign spying and interference, why are they banning TikTok but not Facebook? Because TikTok facilities political expression.
What happens when all the artists and journalists are out of work, or buried under mountains of AI slop that online platforms push to the top, and the only way left to get information about the country / world is through Meta's AI news network?
Descent into fascism is always coupled with a silencing of the arts. The Nazi party burned books, fired artists and musicians from teaching positions, and created organizations to be sure art supported "racial purity." Sounding at all familiar??
AI businesses are terrible. This is not morality or hyperbole: they're terrible businesses. None of them are making money, but giant corporations keep pouring dump trucks of money into them. Why?? Corporations hate losing money!
Because they want to repeat what Amazon did. They're willing to operate a loss for years if it means they can undercut all competition, put everyone else out of business, monopolize as many industries as possible, then hike up the price cause you have no alternative.
When this happens, you won't get to have a conversation about Trump's crimes. You won't even know they're occurring. You'll ask google, "What did President Trump do?" and you'll get only AI generated answers from a *surely unbiased* capitalist megacorp.
Art and media have been PIVOTAL for progress throughout history. Creatives dare to challenge societal norms through entertainment, we normalize them by showing their beauty, and we make headway in changing hearts and minds for the better.
It used to be illegal for women to wear pants. It was illegal until 1923. It took another decade for Katharine Hepburn to wear pants in Vogue, and another 30 years for Mary Tyler Moore to normalize women wearing trousers on TV.
If a right as innocent as, "Can women wear pants?" is only 100 years old and it's only been normal for 60 years BECAUSE OF ART... what the hell do you think is going to happen to gay rights and civil rights when AI controls everything you see and hear?
It sounds ludicrous, but this has been the capitalist playbook for all time. They want a ruling class and they want slave labor, and in America they also want a Christian theocracy. Big business shoveling money into AI is in direct support of this goal.
So I'll say it again: don't mistake this as a silly fight over video game characters and, "Judy Gardland sings WAP" memes. Art, in all its forms, is a mandatory component of freedom. If we fail to support the humanities now, we will not recover in our lifetimes.

In the Seventies, Hammer Films struggled to find its way as horror films moved away from gothic horror into modern-day terrors; however, the company famous for Dracula and Frankenstein did earn some success with a trio of films referred to as The Karnstein Trilogy. The Grue Crew settles in to revisit the middle entry, Lust for a Vampire, which follows Vampire Lovers (1970) and leads into Twins of Evil (1971). Unfortunately, the film was plagued with misfortune from the onset: both Peter Cushing and Ingrid Pitt refused to return; the original director, Terence Fisher, suffered injuries when he was hit by a car and was replaced at the last minute by Jimmy Sangster; the director and the writer clashed with producers who insisted on including the pop song “Strange Love.” Even co-star Ralph Bates called the feature, “One of the worst films ever made.” Certainly, there must be some highlights. Certainly…
At the time of this writing, Lust for a Vampire is available to stream from  Shudder, AMC+, Tubi, and Flix Fling. The movie is also available on physical media as a Blu-ray from Shout! Factory.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode, chosen by Doc, will be Kingdom of the Spiders (1977). William Shatner and 5,000 spiders! What could go wrong?

Embracing Differences: The Evolving Journey of the Neurodiversity Movement
Tumblr media
The neurodiversity movement, a paradigm shift in how we perceive neurological differences, has been making waves in our understanding of what it means to be ‘normal.’ This movement, emerging in the late 20th century, has changed the narrative from one of pathology to one of diversity and inclusion. Let’s delve into the rich history and evolution of this transformative movement.
The Early Days: Seeds of Change (1990s)
The term ‘neurodiversity’ was first coined in the late 1990s by Australian sociologist Judy Singer, herself on the autism spectrum. It emerged as a challenge to prevailing views on neurological conditions like autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and others. These conditions were traditionally seen as disorders or deficits, but the neurodiversity movement sought to reframe them as simply variations in the human brain – akin to variations in race, gender, or sexuality.
This period was marked by a burgeoning internet, which played a pivotal role. Online forums and chat rooms became spaces where individuals with various neurological conditions could share experiences and insights, forming a nascent community. These digital interactions laid the groundwork for what would become a global movement.
The 2000s: Growing Awareness and Advocacy
Entering the new millennium, the neurodiversity movement began gaining traction. It wasn’t just about autism anymore; it encompassed a spectrum of neurological experiences, including conditions like dyspraxia, Tourette Syndrome, and others. Advocacy groups and organizations started to form, advocating for rights, accommodations, and acceptance of neurodivergent individuals in society.
During this phase, the movement saw an increasing collaboration between neurodivergent individuals and allies in academia, healthcare, and education. This period also marked the beginning of neurodiversity being discussed in the context of civil rights and social justice, drawing parallels with other movements advocating for diversity and inclusion.
The 2010s: Mainstream Recognition and Challenges
The 2010s witnessed neurodiversity gaining mainstream recognition. Major organizations and corporations began to acknowledge the value of neurodivergent individuals, leading to initiatives like the Autism at Work program by major tech companies. These initiatives highlighted the unique strengths and talents that neurodivergent individuals could bring to the workplace.
However, the movement also faced challenges. Debates arose within the community about the extent to which neurodiversity should encompass various conditions. There was also criticism that the movement was overly focused on high-functioning individuals, potentially overshadowing the needs of those requiring more support.
The Role of Media and Literature
Media and literature played a significant role in shaping perceptions of neurodiversity. Books like “NeuroTribes” by Steve Silberman and “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” by Mark Haddon brought neurodiversity into public consciousness. Films and TV shows began to feature neurodivergent characters, contributing to a shift in societal attitudes.
Impact on Education and Employment
The movement significantly influenced educational and employment practices. Educational institutions started adopting more inclusive teaching methods and accommodations, recognizing different learning styles and needs. In employment, there was a growing appreciation for the diverse skills and perspectives neurodivergent individuals could offer, leading to more inclusive hiring practices.
The Current State and Future Directions
Today, the neurodiversity movement is at a crucial juncture. It’s recognized globally, with increasing awareness and acceptance. However, it still faces challenges, such as ensuring inclusivity within the movement and addressing the needs of all neurodivergent individuals.
The future of the neurodiversity movement lies in its ability to adapt and respond to these challenges. It must strive for a more inclusive approach that embraces the full spectrum of neurodiversity. There’s also a growing need to focus on intersectionality, considering how neurodiversity intersects with other aspects of identity, such as race, gender, and socio-economic status.
Conclusion: A Continuum of Change
The neurodiversity movement has come a long way from its early days. It has shifted the narrative from one of deficit to one of diversity, advocating for acceptance, inclusion, and respect for all neurological differences. As we look to the future, the movement stands as a beacon of hope and a reminder that in our neurological differences lies our collective strength.
This journey of the neurodiversity movement is not just about those who are neurodivergent; it’s about all of us. In embracing neurodiversity, we embrace a fuller spectrum of the human experience, enriching our communities and societies in profound ways. The history of this movement is a testament to the power of advocacy, the strength of community, and the endless potential of human diversity.
