Everyone being certified to conduct research with human subjects (of any kind, including administering or designing surveys) has to learn about this and pass a test about it.
That's not enough people who have to learn about it.
On this day, 25 July 1972, the US government admitted its role in the Tuskegee syphilis experiment, a horrific 40-year study of poor Black agricultural workers in Alabama who had syphilis but were not informed. Over the course of the study, 128 participants died of syphilis or related complications, 40 wives of participants were infected, and 19 children were born with congenital syphilis. The government owned up following leaks to the media about the programme. The resulting public outrage forced the introduction of federal regulation to protect human subjects in medical trials. As good as the finale was I am still left in serious want for more storyline for the Tuskegee Airmen because wow they really got a quarter of an episode in ep8 and maybe 3 lines in this ep and we're supposed to be good?
We really should have had scenes with them across more episodes, and gotten at least a fraction of their story because the way they were shown really showed almost nothing
#there's also plenty of other issues#i saw someone talk much better about the jewish rep scenes we got in this ep than i ever could#but i was very uncomfortable with solomon being the one to help that nazi up#it was just unnecessary#like even if it was accurate it really felt out of place and bad#and im not the one to talk in depth about the tuskeegees either#that's not my place#but i am sincerely dissapointed because they featured heavily in the advertisements#and it feels wrong that they got advertised like their stories would be told when they didn't really do more than show a page of their stor#like i loved so much of the series#but it needed to be longer and it needed to cut C plots to benefit B plots#and they could have done more to do a perspective swap at various times more#so we wouldn't get stalled so much with the nothing going on at the pow camp so often and instead met any of the new guys after e5 really#dana rambles#mota#masters of the air#mota spoilers

i mean, i guess one solution to adapting the racist orangutan story is to just. not address Any Of That.
#i’m sorry it’s just. you made a choice to adapt that specific story that’s. almost entirely about the idea of this ‘foreign beast’ that a#guy kidnapped from africa that got loose and then kills two women. you made the choice to adapt THAT story.#i really feel like you shouldn’t get to sidestep that and try and put it into a completely different issue.#i mean it’s better than they could have handled it but still.#the fall of the house of usher#also. is it. weird to anyone else that the character they chose to be the face of ‘unethical medical research’ is a black woman?#im probably reading to much into coincidence but. idk. idk. one of the things i had to study back at college during psych was the tuskeegee#research. and. yeah maybe i’m reading too much into it. still a weird feeling. her out of all the siblings.

Have the rampant book bans affected what sort of books publishers will buy or invest a lot of money in?
Probably? But maybe not quite in the way you might be thinking?
For example, I don't think many editors are thinking "whoa, we better not publish any [queer/diverse/whatever] stuff, because book bans!" -- perhaps the opposite is true. As in, I think most editors are quite liberal, and the ones who publish [queer/diverse/whatever] stuff would think in fact "I want to DOUBLE DOWN on [queer/diverse/whatever] stuff because EFF the book banners!"
That being said -- it's a very challenging environment, to say the least. If schools and libraries are having their budgets slashed, or if they are aren't allowed to buy books on certain topics or fear potentially terrible backlash if they do. . . well, the publishers lose those sales, which of course affects them. A HUGE amount of a children's publisher's bottom line is down to schools and libraries. If a publisher makes less money, they have less money to spend, so that's not great.
They aren't going to stop buying great books on a wide variety of topics and themes -- but I can definitely see where they might go "OK, this particular book is obviously important and we want to publish it, BUT, due to whatever draconian law that is being implemented, it simply will not sell to schools in Texas, Florida, or anywhere in the south -- so our projected income for the book is x-amount less than it might have been in previous times -- so we have to take that into account when we are thinking about how much to spend on it."
Mind you -- I haven't been privy to these conversations. Nobody has ever used that as an "excuse" when declining a book or offering a more modest advance or anything like that. But I can certainly IMAGINE that some kind of conversations like that must be happening, because like... hello, of course it must be. They can't act like everything is totally normal in children's publishing, because it ISN'T.
(BTW, in case people are thinking, oh, it's mostly like, SEXY books that are the "problem" -- au contraire! Books on every topic under the sun are being removed/challenged for the wildest reasons. Books on history -- like the Tuskeegee Airmen or Rosa Parks -- removed from curriculums, because apparently learning about ACTUAL FACTS OF HISTORY is "woke". OK. Fucking worst timeline, tbqh.)

i think a lot of girls dream to be “wags” and i genuinely don’t understand why. it’s not as glitz and glam as everyone says it is. You want your man to never be around? You want to have constant anxiety of his cheating on roadies? You wanna have babies with a man who’s constantly not home and when he is, he’s still not home?
These girls are dreaming for a not involved husband. A 3 month long a year relationship during the off season i don’t get it.
When I was in my early twenties, I was dead set on marrying a man in the military. This was the 00s during the Iraq & Afghanistan Wars.
My dad is a retired military officer. Air Force. He actually joined the Air Force because of the Tuskeegee Airman. He wanted to be a pilot, but he had a heart murmur.
I was born in a military hospital on a military base. I attended 6 different schools between K-8. So many of my favorite memories were that of living on base with other military families.
I wanted that again. For years, I actually pursued a commission in the Navy, but I had severe anxiety & needed medication. You can't take anxiety medication in the military, so I stopped taking those meds to qualify. However, I still had anxiety, so I turned to self-medicating with food.
I ballooned in weight and no longer met weight requirements. So I doubled down on finding a military man because, if you know anything about military dudes, they love them some BBWs.
It took years of dipping into online dating and disastrous connections before I realized what I was looking for. I even joined the USO and helped at deployment events. Overtime, I met spouses and developed friendships with them. That's when I realized what I was truly looking for.
Community & Acceptance
I wasn't interested in a military man. I just wanted the lifestyle and community. I wanted to be a military wife, but I didn't want a military man because they are cheating bastards.
I wanted the title. I wanted to be around the other women. The man wasn't important.
And that's wrong.
There are a lot of similarities between military wives & WAGS. Certainly not the pay! But, the frequent moves. Spouse gone most of the year. Expectations of how the wife & family should act. And a lot of cheating.
I see a lot of WAGs who don't care about the man. They want the lifestyle. The "prestige" of being part of an elite group. An "us" versus "them" mentality.
They don't care about the man.
They just wanted the title of WAG.
Now that I am older with that lens, I can see this for what it is.
A lack of identity. Low self-esteem. And a need to be seen & accepted.
Once I learned who I was and developed my esteem, I no longer was interested in finding any man. I don't need external validation.
I know who I am, and I love who I am.
I don't need external validation any more.
A lot of those women just want to be seen and be "envied". They don't love the man. They just love the lifestyle.
Don't be like that.
Find yourself. Love yourself. And you'll never need to be seen ever again.

🌀Post the fic summary for a fic you haven't written/published yet. It can be hypothetical or something you really plan on releasing...
hi grace! thank you so much for this ask 🥰
bare bones of this: wwii au, bucky comes back home to delacroix with lots of ptsd, loosely inspired by “only skin” by joanna newsom and saving private ryan. the story starts with him coming back from the european theater and eventually weaves past and present.
summary: For as long as she can remember, Sarah Wilson has loved Bucky Barnes. She never expected him to even notice her, let alone return her feelings; it is the American South, after all, and Black and White don’t mix. But they’d found a way to meet in secret, deep in the bayou at an abandoned cabin where they’d spent hours dreaming dreams about a future in some city called Paris, where no one cared who you loved. Until the war came. They never thought Bucky would be pulled into the fight and then, the dreaded draft card arrived in the mail. Sarah spends two long years waiting for him to return, growing the family’s victory garden, trying not to worry about Sam at Tuskeegee, and holding her mama together at home. But, once Bucky’a back home, will he be able to leave the horrors of war behind or is the future they dreamed of dead like so many others?
send me WIP asks!

*Masters Of The Air Spoilers*
On another episode of I'm the best aunt to my nieces and nephews::
I watched Masters Of The Air with my sister (36) and her children (aged 20, 12, 8, 6, and 3) today. Here are some quotes from their watch:
"Where's Bubbles?" - from all of them, the ENTIRE first few episodes. Apparently, huge Bubbles fans.
"Marge." - 20 year old mocking Gale with Bucky during episode 7.
"What happened to Meatball? Who's watching him?" - 8 year old
"He really does look like Johnny Depp!" - my sister about Austin Butler, no one had suggested that he looked like Johnny Depp 🤷♀️
"His lips really are perfect!" - 20 year old about Austin Butler
"Rosie, get out of the goddamn plane!" - 8 year old as Rosie is trying to bail out in episode 9
"Yay! He's flying!" - 3 year old as Rosie falls to No-Mans land in Ep. 9
"And.... kiss!" - the 20 year old and 12 year old after Bucky and Buck spoke to each other in EVERY episode
"That's a room I'd like to sit in!" - about the Tuskeegee Airmen briefing room
"Ooh he felt that." - My sister after Curt punches Bucky in episode 2
"But.. what happened to Buck?" - During episode 5
"Where is Bucky?" - 6 year old actually looking for Buck.
"But which one is Buck and which one is Bucky?" - 8 year old while watching episode 9
All in all, they all thoroughly enjoyed the show, and we had a bunch of great conversations about World War 2 and the history surrounding it. ❤️

Are the Tuskeegee Airmen going to feature a lot? I need them to also be fed up of Bucky's yearning for Stella. Like, we get it man, you miss your girl. And then Stella sends them things too.
I'm not sure if they'll be featured a lot, but I do hope to get them in there! I feel like they'll also get fed up with Bucky's constant monologue about Frank. We get it--we ALL miss our girls, dude.
YES AND STELLA SENDS THEM THINGS AND THEY'RE LIKE... "Ok...continue."

Zeek's Freaks
Not my Problem
[1st Draft]
It took a week before Ezekiel could walk without feeling faint. The training videos, all 26 hours of them, luckily could all be done behind a seat.
Unfortunately, considering his job is purely janitorial, most of it didn’t apply aside from a list of doors that shouldn’t be opened.
Half way into their shift, they could barely stand up without stumbling. One of the other janitors caught them before they fell, saying something they couldn’t understand.
Somehow Ezekiel managed to assuage the old man. He sought out a quieter part of the building. Cleaning from there instead taking breaks but each breath brought them closer to fainting. Whatever magic being pumped into their soul didn’t feel nearly like enough as if they were in a high altitude. No matter how much food they ate, it didn’t even come close to filling that gap in energy.
While moping, a scientist opens a nearby security door using a retina scan. Curiosity hits you then like a cement wall. Why would there be a retina scan in a mental health facility that a 12-year-old could pick a lock on.
Ezekiel keeps an eye on the door the following days, trying their best to stay as close as possible. Just in case a certain lab coat walked in, entirely unaware of their surroundings, allowing for Ezekiel to slip in behind them.
At first, it’s only a locker room. Ezekiel ducks behind a gap in the wall while the lab coat enters. He watches the way they enter the code.
Once again, Ezekiel dresses up like a lab coat then slips in soon after. The hallway’s short, no more than 10 doors, each with transparent walls leading to a cell.
Ezekiel stares in shock at the conditions.
Each monster crammed in narrow cells, barely large enough to stretch out in. The lamia couldn’t even stand to their full height. The creature that looked at them, glowering at the lab coat interrogating a bat-skeleton behind them. the skeleton’s namesake briefly glanced at Ezekiel, then the others, then him.
Ezekiel sets a hand on the glass, ignoring the flashing yellow line. “Hello, can you understand me?”
The monsters were said to come from the wilds, but not our wilds. Many of them not knowing any human tongue.
The lamia’s fangs curl with amusement. “yeah, sweets, every word.”
Ezekiel’s eyes must’ve widened comically large. “You… you shouldn’t be here. This isn’t right. I don’t suppose you know the code.”
“What the HELL are you doing here? This is a restricted area.” A scientist snaps, reaching for you. Ezekiel bolts for the door just as an alarm goes off and it slams shut. Soon enough, they’re cuffed.
“This is illegal. You can hold them in there.”
The guards ignore you, letting them scream and shout until the silhouette of a woman who ruined their life and sets their blood on fire comes in. The magic inhibitor burns into their neck. “HOW DARE YOU! You knew about this. You – this is just like Tuskeegee all over again.”
In the confines of her office, the doors shut and the cuffs off. “Did you have to make a scene? You know how it reflects upon me.”
“Badly upon you?! How do you think the states’s going to react knowing you have people locked up in a makeshift prison?”
Drew plops down in her plush leather chair. Her gaze fixed on a stack of papers. “We have all the paperwork right here. approved by the state, if you’d like to check.”
“The legislature—“
“Saw the threat of magic users and saw the need to research these creatures. You’re blowing this out of proportions. These aren’t even people. They’re violent creatures who only follow their base instincts.”
“What are you talking about? They speak. They feel. They’re just like you and me.”
“Who can also perform a perfect mimickery of human speech. The most he’s done is pulled one of my assistant’s pants down. Merely an animal.”
“You can’t be serious. Those—they’re people. They—I could see it in their eyes.”
“How scientific. No wonder you stooped so low to work in primary education. Why not counsel toddlers, I’m sure that gives you plenty of insight into the human condition. Coming from someone without a heart, of course.” She taps on your chest. “That’s very convincing.”
Ezekiel slaps her hand away. “That’s insane!. The proof’s written in their face. If someone spent any time with them, I bet they’d see that too.”
“You bet?” Dr Drew curls her lips int hat knowing grin that made your skin crawl since you were a kid. “How sure are you?”
You take a step back, she’s so much closer. Her breath on your skin, you can barely breathe. First time in decades and you’re barely standing. You’d dreamed of beating her to a pulp since you were a kid, you couldn’t move.
“Would you bet a year’s wage? 2? If you’re so certain that they’re people, why not 3? I’ll give you a team, funding and 6 months to come up with results.”
“Those are people’s lives! Not numbers.”
Her smile so saccharine sweet you swallow an upchuck. “Well, that is what we’re here to prove, aren’t we?”
Your breathing grows ragged as she presses you against the wall. Your legs turning to jelly.
“I’ll-I’ll tell the news.”
“The news who are bound by censorship from the state? Perfect plan.”
Ezekiel curses themselves. It’s idiotic if papers on Dr Drews desk are real, then alerting anyone would bite them in the ass more than help. But what if they didn’t know, would they care? The people in that room will look like stuff of myth and legend. If they can’t see a witch as human, why a monster?”
“1 year for my own office, freedom to bring in materials regularly in rooms. Whether or not they pose a risk and I want to be able to go into those cells. If my findings confirm they’re people, I want them released.”
“Deal.” She holds out her hand, almost civilly if not for her Cheshire cat grin.
“Deal.” Ezekiel nods, stepping from the room, the outer doors didn’t come soon enough.

ok im gonna focus my anger on to something else. anyways i rewatched night at the museum with my mom and it reminded me of how great the original one was and how god awful the sequel was. like yeah there were some iffy things in the first movie (larry going "civil war guys stop fighting slavery is bad" and they immediately stop fighting and agree with him + the romans and the cowboy miniatures allowed to roam free while the maya are locked up + avid bison hunter teddy roosevelt dating sacagawea + despite their incredibly rich history there's zero black people present etc) but overall the film itself was fun and had a plotline that made sense. it was cheesy and kind of obvious but its a kids movie. then the sequel happened.
ohh my god this movie was so so so bad. like racist/misogynistic bad but also narratively unsatisfying. the worst crime to me was that they literally removed almost all of the old iconic characters from the first film? teddy only shows up in the beginning and the end, ahkmenrah is completely irrelevant, scagawea and attila are locked up most of the time, jed is stuck in the hourglass...none of them have any importance to the actual action despite being THE reason that larry returns to the museum!!
oh and larry totally ditches his son like nick gives him a bunch of information then he loses service on his phone and then...never attempts to contact him again. this poor kid is probably worried sick that his father is being killed by lions or sabretooth tigers.
second worst thing to do with characters: literally all of the new characters were so so incredibly boring, and also didn't have like. a theme around them? it just felt so messy and thrown together, lacking the cohesion that everyone at the natural history museum had. none of the villains have much in common with each other either... and like im not a history expert but i find it very hard to imagine that al capone would work with royalty like come on. oh and kahmunrah was so boring, no real motivations at all. also whyyy is there an octopus.
actually i lied this is probably a worse crime. the mischaracterization of historical figures. i feel like im watching fucking hamilton here! im sorry but napoleon would not give a shit about larry and amelia's potential relationship and that joke wasn't even that funny anyway. WHY DID ABRAHAM LINCOLN ACT LIKE THAT (he was much more tolerable when he came back to the rescue but he was so awful when we met him). the einsteins were annoying. i could go on and on brother
ok moving away from bad writing to address the stuff that's just morally messed up. um. everything about general custer oh my fucking god. i will never forgive them for making sacagawea put up with his stupid ass. he is quite literally most famous for the fact that he tried to kill indigenous people. yeah it wasn't in sacagawea's lifetime but i find it hard to believe that things would just be totally chill between them. not to mention the fact that custer literally contributed nothing, he has an entire moment where larry coddles him for being a failure, then goes into the fight, immediately gets knocked out, and then tries to act like he led the battle. classic white man behavior.
and again, massive lack of black history. there's a moment of solidarity with amelia and the tuskeegee which was nice! genuinely sweet moment. but despite yknow being the race that has existed longer than any other. the tuskeegee are the only black people we see.
and of course the elephant in the room, the obnoxious focus on romance throughout the entirety of the film. the cherubs were super annoying. the thinker showing off his muscles to some random nymph statue or whatever. very weird. and the constant never ending awkward flirting between amelia and larry. like amelia is supposed to be a trailblazer for being a woman doing something impressive that was considered a man's job! so why are you reducing her to a pretty girl who punches people sometimes but mostly just kisses the protagonist even when he says he's not interested!! part of what made the og movie so good was that there were women in the story but none of them were romantically involved with him at all. even rebecca, who seemed like she was set up to be a love interest, was just a good friend of larry's. they were independent women with agency (aside from sacagawea but she shares that lack of agency with the other museum displays) and their own wants needs etc. and of course they had to add in the weirdness of having larry repeatedly say he's not interested in amelia (which makes sense, it would feel out of character for him to immediately be into it) and then have amelia kiss him anyways. really gross. oh and they cast amy adams to play amelia which. nothing against amy adams she's a brilliant actress but not the one for this role. google amelia earhart she's a pretty masculine/rougher woman. not the femme fatale in the movie.
ok i don't have a real conclusion here just my thoughts all dumped. if you read all of this o7 i salute you. feel free to comment/rb with your thoughts btw!
