Seville was the first stop on our trip to Spain and Italy. We stayed right in the downtown core in a lovely boutique hotel that served afternoon tea and a lovely buffet breakfast each morning.Back home, I have walked into so many homes where there is an elaborately ornate staircase design that often looks totally out of place. Now I know where the design was inspired. And it fits right in here. Along with the tile after one of my followers on Instagram noted “There’s no subway tile Maria”.So that’s what inspired this post. Which was easy to write because I took so many photos of all the tile work.I know many of you, who are longtime readers, might fall off your chair or drop your morning coffee but here is where decorative tile has a place:This was a doorway in the reception area of the hotel:Here’s the staircase (below):The first night, we had dinner in a nearby restaurant. I liked the way the muted red encaustic tile related to the bricks on the same wall (below):And it also worked well with the black and white tile floors:This was the backsplash tile in the breakfast room, back in the hotel (below):This was the floor in the Seville Cathedral nearby (below):Then we toured the Real Alcazar of Seville, castle and gardens. Gorgeous tiles everywhere (below): When does this kind of tile work back home? In context with a Spanish/Mediterranean style home, with an exterior that possibly looks like this:Image sourceAn entry staircase with iron railings ornate or not (below):Centsational StyleWood beamed ceilings, ornate, spanish style pendants, black, arched windows, all belong in a house with this colourful tile (below):image sourceYou could also design a terra cotta floor with a turquoise kitchen (below):Image sourceIn this Spanish kitchen with the beams in the ceiling and curved plaster hood fan, I could even live with the blue backsplash because it’s been repeated in the plates and tile underneath the window.Image sourcePerhaps your styling might look like this with the Spanish style wall sconce as well:Image sourceIn a Spanish style home, your powder room could look like this (below). Notice the arched doorway and perfect light fixture.Image sourceI love this fireplace design (below). So classic and timeless. Again, notice the beams and the arched french doors. The beautiful outdoor fireplace too with the iron gate.image sourceIt’s rare that I think a black leather sofa looks good but here in this more neutral ‘Spanish inspired’ living room, it works. Because there’s not too much black to make it heavy and masculine (below):image sourceWhat I have seen all too often is people will go on a trip to Europe and fall in love with a particular style and when they get home they start adding these random design elements that in no way work with the existing style of their home. That’s where random arches that have no place suddenly appear, or the busy, ornate staircase railing I mentioned at the beginning of this post or random rows of tile on a staircase kick that in no way belongs.Decorative tile has a place. And that place is definitely not as a random strip in your kitchen backsplash or shower surround. At least if you’re going to introduce accent tile, go big or go home, (like the bathroom image above) but don’t just install bits and pieces of it. Decorative tile is like a strong wall colour. If you’ve decided to paint a room red, go for it, don’t just paint it on a single wall, that rarely works.Related post: A New Way to Design Accent Tile: Ceramic ArchitectureHere are a couple more images once we arrived in Barcelona: Here I am sitting outside at dinner in a Tapas restaurant in Seville:The sidewalks in Seville were mostly concrete in a hex shape! Is Brown the New Black? Sherwin-Williams’ Shocking New Color of the Year
sherwin-williams.com
For years, shades of watered-down brown were the go-to choice for risk-averse homeowners. Need to prep a house for a sale? Slather the walls with beige. Want to give your home a vaguely Tuscan feel? Turn to taupe.
Sure, these bland brownish hues go with anything, but they’re severely lacking in the personality department.
So we were frankly rather shocked to see that a new twist on brown has taken the lead in today’s home decor: Sherwin-Williams has named Cavern Clay SW 7701—a warm terra-cotta shade reminiscent of sunsets in the desert—its 2019 Color of the Year.
This earthy brown is miles away from boring beige. It’s part of today’s trend of leaning into our love of all things natural.
“Cavern Clay is an easy way to bring the warmth of the outdoors in,” says Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams. “Envision beaches, canyons and deserts, and sun-washed, late-summer afternoons—all of this embodied in one color.
“I’ve been seeing this color pop up everywhere—from fashion to home decor to accessories,” she adds. Indeed, she spotted this aesthetic, which she calls “cowgirl chic,” on the runways of Fall Fashion Week 2018 and instantly thought it should take a starring role in our homes.
Cavern Clay is a bold contrast to recent years of saturated jewel tones. Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2018 was a vibrant, amethystlike Ultra Violet, and Sherwin-Williams’ 2018 pick, Oceanside, was a sumptuous mixture of blue and green.
Those rich hues aren’t fading into black anytime soon; Wadden predicts we’ll continue seeing saturated tones dominate. But she says homeowners will appreciate Cavern Clay because it’s “more warm and elemental and rooted in the earth.”
Not sure how to integrate this shade into your personal space? Try these ideas on for size.
1. Pair with modern accents
Courtesy Sherwin-Williams
To complement this nouveau-chic shade, pair it with modern accents.
On the backsplash, subway tiles arranged in a herringbone pattern keep this kitchen from looking dated. While the bar stools and lights add their own rustic style—with wooden seats and iron framing—their lines are entirely contemporary.
“This color’s resurgence is made contemporary with clean lines and modern shapes,” says Wadden.
2. Embrace Southwestern textiles
Courtesy Sherwin-Williams
Southwestern style is currently oh so chic, and Cavern Clay’s umber ambiance certainly plays to that in a way that feels entirely contemporary.
Consider going all-out with your desert vibes by picking patterned textiles that invoke a Western feel: Try banded geometric or tessellating Ganado-style patterns in toned-down, complementary shades.
Light-wood furniture keeps the look from going over the top. And don’t skip the greenery. Fun, leafy plants perfect the space.
3. Keep the rest neutral
Courtesy of Sherwin-Williams
Cavern Clay may be a brownish hue, but it’s still a saturated tone. Unless you’re careful, pairing it with bold neons or velvety blues could create a riot of color that’s, well, too riotous.
“Cavern Clay ties really well with a natural palette,” Wadden says. “It goes great with gray, too.”
Soften the shade with white molding and plain textiles. Here, a gray blanket perfectly softens the dramatic look, so the room still feels Southwestern—but not overwhelmingly so.
It also pairs well with deeps browns such as Sherwin-Williams’ Moth Wing SW 9174, Wadden says. Feeling bold? Consider a modern update of ’70s earth tone combinations by pairing Cavern Clay with a dusty denim blue or even a fresh avocado.

Custom Build Home Interior Design Ideas
How wonderful it is to have each and every one of you here on the blog today. How are you feeling? It still feels very cold and we’re having so much snow this winter, and I have to be honest with you, I feel happier when the sun is shinning out there. Grey days are not fun and not very good for our mood, right? That’s why I feel that sharing homes that are not only beautiful, but also “feel” good, can lift our spirit and bring us some inspiration. With every post I prepare for you guys, I am always hoping that you will have a good time and feel a little happier in this place. That’s always my priority.
Now, can we talk about this new house tour? I am really excited to feature this “Southern Louisiana meets Mediterranean” custom build home and the designer is sharing all of the details below. Keep reading!
“Call it an empty-nester opportunity. With their twin boys grown and gone and their daughter just off to college, a couple went searching for an expanse of land in Texas where they could build the home they’d always wanted–and house their horses as well. While the couple enlisted architect Clay Nelson to devise plans for a Tuscan-style farmhouse with an open plan and spacious outdoor living areas, they approached designer Traci Connell with a somewhat different request: The Louisiana natives wanted the interiors to celebrate their Southern roots. “That struck a chord with me,” Connell says. “My daughter was born in southern Louisiana. I had this connection to the feeling they wanted–that Creole originality and uniqueness.” Connell selected finishes that refer back to her clients’ childhood homes — whitewashed brick in the breakfast area, wrought-iron balusters on the stairs — while she incorporated their objects and heirlooms into the design. “The house is grounded,” the wife says. “In every room, there’s a touch of something from a family member or from Louisiana.” Connell had a slightly different focus in the nearby barn, which also includes the husband’s office. “This was his escape,” she explains. The barn was such a hit that it’s become a favorite gathering place for friends and family as well.”
