How to create t3x textures for 3DS VNDS LOVE ports

I spent forever trying to figure out how to make t3x textures for a VN port that could be played using vnds love on the 3ds. There was barely any information on it, and the information I did find was either hard or impossible for a beginner to understand, so I decided to make this.

This will probably be part of a larger post on how to port a VN into a VNDS format

You will need:

A PC

An image editor (if your images are larger than 1024x1024 pixels)

Italicized words will indicate that you don’t type those words into the command prompt/terminal word for word, italicized words mean they depend on the situation

  1. download and install devkitpro pacman 

Find the right installer for your using these instructions. This contains built versions of tex3ds (which can create the t3x files)

  2. add tex3ds to path

Once you’re done installing and setting it up, add tex3ds (specifically its location, which should be where-ever-you-put-it\devkitPro\tools\bin\tex3ds) to path. If you don’t know how to do that, just google “how to add to path”

  3. decide which method you prefer/check if your images are pngs or jpgs

This is the part where you can convert each one manually or get the .py files that let you convert an entire folder’s worth with a single command. Unfortunately the .py file only convert pngs. If you got a lot of png images you need converted and want that second option, go to step 4.

If you only have one or two images to convert or need to convert a jpg, then type ‘tex3ds location-of-image/image-name.jpg-or-png -o location-of-where-you-want-the-image/image-name.t3x’ into command prompt (Windows)/Terminal (Mac). If simply typing tex3ds doesn’t work for whatever reason you might have to type the specific location of tex3ds.exe for it work

  4. download the .py files 

Download all three .py files from https://github.com/TurtleP/Convert3x. Since there’s no public releases, you need to click on the “code” dropdown box and download zip file. Unzip the downloaded folder and you should have file.py, log.py, and main.py.

  5. open command prompt/terminal and type main.py and the folder you want converted 

Type ‘file location of downloaded files\main.py file-location-of-images-you-want-converted’ into the command prompt/terminal. It might take a little while to convert, just give it some time. If it didn’t create a t3x file and says the image width or height is too big, that’s because it needs to fit on a 1024x1024 texture. So you’ll need to scale down the image until it fits that.

When I did this, some images that were the right size said the ‘invalid width’, but still converted them anyway. So be sure to check if there’s a new t3x file.

And remember to go into the script file(s) and change any .jpg or .png to .t3x

Issues I had while trying to figure this out that you might have too:

DON’T TYPE TEXT3DS INTO THE COMMAND PROMPT - I kept doing this on accident. It’s tex3ds. No second ‘T’.

You get “PermissionError: [WinError 5] Access is denied:” while running main.py - I got this issue because I’m on a PC I share with my family and tried to run main.py on the root of the drive. Because main.py tries to go into every file in the directory you specify, it might be trying to get into a file it doesn’t have permission to go in (at least as far as I understand it). Either mess around with the permissions or change the target directory to one that doesn’t have any other folders in it

VNDS LOVE suddenly gives you a “lib/lip.lua:40: attempt to call field 'lines' (a nil value)” error - I don’t know what caused this, but deleting log.txt and config.ini in the novels file fixed it

I saw a HC from @ pastelnacht that I adore and have adopted: Beej doesn’t actually hate baths or showers. It’s just.... they don’t have those in the Netherworld. Everybody’s dead, who cares about hygiene? And when he’s in the Upperworld he’s invisible. Even when he’s not, breathers aren’t exactly rolling out the welcome wagon for him to use their facilities. Offer him yours??? He will strip and bolt for the bathroom so fast. (Especially if you hop in with him 😉)

I totally agree with you re: not hating baths or showers. Boy just doesn’t care all that much, and it’s just not the norm in the Netherworld.  

This also kind of reminds me of a conversation I had with @ladycyon where we talked about the Deetzes building a pool on their property and Beej absolutely floating on an innertube in a two-piece and sarong he stole from Delia, a questionable and smoking cocktail in hand.

Ok, first things first: *TACKLEHUGS* Manda, I’m so sorry all this crap is falling down on you and your family’s heads, especially in the middle of the holidays. Christmas and New Years are stressful enough all on their own without extra bullshit. Your husband’s former employers and your landlady are colossal asshats and I wish I could do something about it but I’m can’t and it blows. Running low on characters, so just love you and BREATHE and everything’s gonna be ok babe. Love your face! 😘

Thank you so much, Manda! You have no idea how badly I needed this yesterday and, to be honest, I teared up when I read it even if I wasn’t ready to answer. Now, I’m ready because I feel much better today, well comparatively better anyway. We’re going to be okay, because we have to be, and we’re going to find a great house and the kids are going to be happy in their new schools and even if I have to miss derby for a couple of months, it’s not the end of the world because home season doesn’t even start until June or July. Until then, I’m going to do my best to hold it together and not completely lose it.

Real Name:  Ayla (eye-la) Hagen Song: Rev 22:20, Puscifer (link) Role: Pole Dancer, escort, call girl Relationship: Long time drinking buddy with Movie Beetlejuice. Likes: Being in control, helping friends, testing new spells, dancing, seducing men. Hates: disrespectful clients, disorganization, people touching her stuff.

Ayla Hagen, who prefers to go by Lamia, died in 1626. She was one of the only real witches during the German witch trials. She managed to get released by accusing another girl of talking to snakes. While leaving prison, elated that she’d escaped and telling the city guards where to shove it, Lamia was bitten by a snake (karma) on the road, which caused her to trip and crack her head open.

Always a fan of seducing men, Lamia decided to start working at Dante’s when she passed over. Her pole dancing routine is sultry and dark, and after cursing a few clients for treating her poorly, she earned the stage name “The Witch.”

Lamia usually is just a pole dancer, but will occasionally, and selectively, sleep with clients. Normally, her role is to be dominate. She prefers to be on top and in control of any sexual situation. She and Movie Beetlejuice have been drinking buddies for a few hundred years and they met one of her first nights at Dante’s. After becoming more comfortable with him, Beetlejuice Is the only one she’ll let dominate her – for the right price and if she’s in a good mood. Musical Beetlejuice is a little intimidated by her, like many patrons, but loves the adrenaline rush Lamia gives him when she calls the shots in bed.

Lamia is extremely protective of the other Dante’s workers and will straight up hex clients who cross any of them. She puts on an older sister role even if she isn’t physically younger (she’s been dead a very long time).

I’m not leaving until the new site is set up but its going to give writers better opportunities than it does here on Tumblr plus with the added bonus of getting rid of anon hate/stalkers that seem to crop up even after they’ve been banned from the site more than once.

For the now I’m still here but just let me say that with the new site a lot of us writers and artists plan on leaving here because with Tumblr we get hateful anons telling us to kill ourselves over disagreeing with an opinion or drawing something the “wrong” way (no such thing) whereas with writscribe we’ll get to eliminate that and actually connect with liken minded people who don’t think not submitting to the hive-mind™ is an act of hatred/war.

But I thank you for your support and hope that I’ll see a lot of you on there!

Gio is mothman. Don’t ask questions.

Were the dons the Backstreet Boys? Who’s to say?

Gio has a thing for hands. He thinks they’re pretty. Hell simp if you wear extravagant hand jewelry and have your nails done all nice. Doesn’t matter the gender, pretty hands are pretty hands.

Scarabee has a pet albino alligator. She can tell if you’re lying and is perfect for interrogations...and yknow, other things.

Gio is the most tattooed of the dons. The only parts of him that aren’t tattooed are his ass, his neck and face, and I think his feet and hands. Yes, that means he has a dick tattoo. It’s a snake. We call it his snick.

We have canon dick sizes for pretty much all of them. Send me an ask for whose you wanna know so you can own up to your shame 🤣

We have made AUs out of our AU. Like, we seriously have no chill. Vampire, Werewolf, Professor, Office, Pirate, Greaser, Doctor, Royalty, Rockstar. Basically, you name it, we’ve probably got conglomerate art/fic/headcanons for it.

We also fucked around with a reverse AU where we are the made up characters the real life dons are simping over in their own discord server. It’s meta in the best way.
