An attempt to deconstruct Inuktitut dialogue in The Terror
Disclaimer: First of all, I want to state that I am in NO way an expert of the Inuit culture nor the Inuktitut language, I have merely an academic interest for knowing how languages work.
Yesterday I tried to deconstruct piece by piece the dialogue in “First Shot a Winner, Lads“ (1x05). I wanted to understad a bit how the elegant Inuktitut language works and omg it’s fascinating. Basically (I’m oversimplifying here) every word expresses a phrase/concept, and is formed by : a root (a noun or verb), affixes (there can be none as well as a ton) and suffixes. Both the affixes and suffixes add detail and definition to the original root. A phrase that is short in english can be very long (ex: Qangatasuukkuvimmuuriaqalaaqtunga = I’ll have to go to the airport) or viceversa (ex: Iqujuq = he/she twists his/her nose sideways in a grimace) Inuktitut is a language that has many dialects (since it’s spoken from Alaska to Greenland) and many phonetic variations. I could appreciate even more the massive work that was behind the show: Silna speaks Natsilik, so she has all the lil’ variations of that dialect (ex: she pronounces the “s” like “h”) Even tho I have in no way a complete understanding of this language, I really like how it works and will continue to post the rest of the dialogue.
I used several websites about the Inuktitut language: One (for roots), Two and Three (for affixes & suffixes), Four and Five (the most complete, for grammar, roots, affixes and suffixes)
Here it is (the 1st part):
Crozier : Tunngasugit. Nakurmiik, ingillutit Welcome. Please, sit down
Tunngasugit [Tunnga - suk - git] Welcome (to a single person) (literally: to_be_like_home - feel - you)
Nakurmiik [Nakuq - miik] Thank you (literally: to_be_grateful - in_general)
Ingillutit [Ingit - llutit] to_sit_down - in_the_meantime
Crozier :Tuqqit? Do you want to drink?
Tuqqit [Tuq - vit] to_eat/drink - you(questioning)
Silna : *Shakes her head*
Crozier : Una uvattinni malittuq? What is following us?
Una [Una] this_one (in questions means “what”)
Uvattinni [Uva - tinni] our - house/place
Malittuq [Malik - juq] to_follow - he/she
Silna : Tuurngaq A spirit Tuurngaq [Tuurngi - aq] spirit (literally: to_evoke - smth_that_is_Xed)
1/? (Part 2) (Part 3) (For phonology, grammar and a general history of the language)

VIDEO: Watch how Nigeria dispatched Tunisia to claim bronze at 2019 cup of nations
An early goal from Odion Ighalo was enough to steer the Super Eagles of Nigeria to a 1-0 victory over the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia on Wednesday night to hand them bronze at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament. The two giants of Africa football locked horns at the Al Salam Stadium yesterday to battle for a third-place finish after narrowly missing out on reaching the finals.Tunisia who has been sloppy for most parts of the tournament was exposed just two minutes into the match after goalkeeper Moez Ben Cherifia collided with his defender Yassine Meriah to hand Ighalo a glorious opportunity to pounce on.The tournament’s top goalscorer took advantage and slotted the ball into the back of the net. That goal proved to be the decider at the end of the 90 minutes even though the Tunisians upped their game and came close to scoring on several occasions in the second half.Watch highlights of Nigeria’s win over Tunisia in the video below:

We've got your highlights for #TUNNGA ready 📺👇#TotalAFCON2019 #FootballTogether pic.twitter.com/JRdznwsMKH
— CAF (@CAF_Online) July 17, 2019
 source: https://footballghana.com/

VIDEO: Nigeria claim third place as Ighalo pounces on early error
After Dylan Bronn's bizarre own goal in extra time handed Senegal a 1-0 victory in a drama-filled semi-final, Tunisia were once more the authors of their own downfall.Jamilu Collins' cross from the left ought to have been simple for Moez Ben Cherifia to collect, but the goalkeeper collided with his own defender Yassine Meriah, allowing Ighalo to pounce for his fifth goal of the competition.Besides that opening lapse in concentration, Tunisia held their own for large periods of the encounter.Taha Khenissi and Ellyes Skhiri both had chances to equalise before the break but both dragged their efforts wide of the target. The second period failed to ignite, with the contest slumping into the level of intensity you would expect from a third place play-off game.Midway through the second half, Samuel Chukwueze forced Ben Cherifia into a fine one-handed save, but one goal proved enough for the Super Eagles to claim the bronze position.
