Watch my account get nuked for this
So recently I reblogged this post about documenting discriminatorily banned accounts for the inevitable human rights lawsuit, and that is INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT, but I also thought of something else that documentation could be used for.
Tumblr media
Not QUITE what they intended this function for I’m sure, but the ‘report harassment’ option is (I’m sure) intentionally designed in such a way that only the person being harassed can functionally report the harassment, and the little message when you say the user is harassing someone else amounts to ‘*shrug* sorry, doesn’t count if the victim doesn’t report it themselves’ which obviously doesn’t work when the form that harassment takes is that the actual victims are banned from the site. Harassment under Tumblrs terms of service is defined as
Tumblr media
Which present behavior by @staff definitely counts as. ‘Targeted abuse’ is the dictionary-perfect term for ‘systematically banning trans people, especially trans women, from the site for having the AUDACITY (/s) to be trans publically’
Considering there’s no ability to use that appeal process on a banned blog, such reports will be best aimed at staff- and mod-affiliated blogs, aka the people doing the harassment (again, as defined by this hellsite (derogatory)’s actual terms of service).
What are they going to do, ban all of us? The only thing Tumblr staff gives a flying fuck about is money, it’s not like they can purge half their userbase without financial consequences.
Let’s give em hell.

got a new blog or side-blog? here's what you need to do *right now*
Change your PFP to something that doesn't look like a phornbot (aka a candid pic of an attractive woman or a group of attractive women)*
Choose a cover photo
Don't leave your blog Untitled
Don't shove a bunch of emoji's in your bio / description. DO post your age or age range, especially if you are 18 or older. (If you're younger than 18, you should not interact with blogs like mine)
Don't leave your blog totally blank. Reblog something so we can all see that you're a real person. (This is just a good practice anyway, reblogs make this site work.)
OR
don't do any of the above and get blocked :-/
Tumblr media
*apologies to attractive women, who can't use their own photo as a PFP because this site is full of kremlin and CCP robots who know how to manipulate our gender
also @staff wtf! you have auto filters now to slap community labels on fics before they're even reported, but I have to spend 5 minutes every time I log in to report/block the spambots???? what is happening???

Small site fixes that I think will help with the war on bots
1. Add an option to disable the "Are you sure you want to block...?" message.
It's can be a bit of a nuisance to have to go through the windows that ask you if you want to block this account and then go through the other message telling you that this account has been blocked. So if you could add an option to disable this warning, that would things a lot easier
2. Add a feature where you can select multiple accounts at once.
Because some people have to deal with waves upon waves of bots, can be a real hassle to have to block/report bot accounts one at a time as you're only restricted to just tapping the three-dot icon in order to block/report an account. So to fix this, add a feature where you're able to select a whole group of accounts for blocking/reporting so that you can deal with multiple accounts all at once.
3. Don't make reporting and blocking separate things on the mobile act.
Even though you're able to block and report an account at the same time on the desktop, for whatever reason you can't automatically block an account when you report it. So if you can change it so that reporting on mobile automatically blocks the reported account, that would be great.
4. Make reporting bot accounts on desktop a less time-consuming process.
Reporting bots on desktop can be a time-consuming process because you have to go to the help desk page to specify why this account is being reported. So to make sure that bots are reported in a more effective manner, maybe alter reporting so that it only takes you to the report page if you're reporting it for something other than spam (i.e. harassment).
Hope you're listening to this.

Tumblr is a multimillion dollar company
Tumblr isn’t going broke anytime soon
This isn’t exactly accurate. Automattic is a multimillion dollar company (that owns Tumblr). Tumblr is not. Tumblr staff are operating under the whims and directives of Automattic leadership, with (as many news articles will tell you) a pressure to make the platform profitable in whatever short-sighted ways possible. As also described in articles, Automattic leadership has in the past seemingly implied that Tumblr could be hibernated.
Tumblr doesn’t care about the users
Again, a large chunk of Tumblr staff do care about the users and the platform and have openly expressed frustration and concerns about Automattic’s leadership.
I agree with the recommendations here overall, but demonizing staff for decisions they’re forced to make to not risk losing the platform entirely isn’t really the most effective path forward and it’s missing the nuance of the actual situation. Do some searching about the relationship with Automattic or read the snippets I shared here.
So yeah, don’t pay for useless stuff, use free resources to make the site better, and send critical feedback to Staff, but just remember that in many ways the source of these issues are not from within Tumblr at all. I’m not saying Staff are perfect, but remember who the enemy actually is and share feedback accordingly.
Go Badge-Free: Tumblr is a multimillion dollar company that doesn't need your loyalty!
Some users ("many" by Tumblr's own unsourced metrics) might want to support Tumblr with something similar to regular donations. Great news! You don't need to, it's a multimillion dollar company, and its parent company, Automattic, was valued at around 7.5 billion dollars in 2021 as stated by none other than Tumblr's Elon-Musk-wannabe CEO himself! Tumblr isn't going to go broke any time soon, and any money you waste on it will just convince staff that the garbage fire they're currently tossing the site into is profitable!
Enter the power of not giving a fuck about useless badges and shitty merch of stolen memes. Everyone with a brain knows auto-renewable subscriptions aren't the way to a "user-led business model", and again, you don't need to show your support for a massive multimedia platform despite whatever their embarrassing ad campaigns that just want money may tell you!
Tumblr media
How it works—or doesn't:
Tumblr doesn't care about the users, whether you're giving them money for nothing or not! So take the initiative yourself. Send them negative feedback about the pointless UI updates. Give Tumblr a 1-star rating on the app store or play store. Disable your badges. Block intrusive ads (and potentially dangerous flashing ones). Style the dashboard to look less like a 1 : 1 clone of Twitter. Install additions to fix basic site functionality.
Seriously, who is buying subscriptions besides staff:
The subscription badges do nothing. Nada. Zero. That is, unless staff decides to lock basic functionality behind a subscription in the future, so make so to make it flop before then.
Pricing:
A year's subscription for a useless cosmetic badge costs you $30 USD. Cheaper than Twitter Blue, sure, but it sure does a whole lot less! Meanwhile, fixing your own user experience and complaining to staff is permanently on sale for the low, low price of free. Spend your money on a nice treat instead!
More details:
I don't know how else to put it. This subscription service sucks ass.
That's all for now. No idea who exactly would buy a badge subscription of all things in the first place that staff probably designed in 5 minutes. Maybe someday Tumblr's will figure out how to interpret actual human behavior and user desires, but that day has yet to come. Stay weird, and Tumblr is not your quirky friendly hellsite company <3

Tumblr is one of the only places on the internet where I enjoy connecting with others. Automattic leadership clearly does not care about or understand the nuance of the platform, which creates an exceptionally unsupportive and challenging environment for Staff to work in. The focus seems to be on shiny features and rapid monetization, with little to no understanding of what makes the platform special. This is evident in this article, as well as many others.
So, what can you do about that? First, I would recommend being kind to Tumblr Staff. Continue to be vocal about features and changes you dislike, but be kind to Staff in your complaints! Don't engage with and turn off (if possible) features that you don't support or disagree with, as likely those numbers are tracked. Be vocal in posts about your objections. All of this helps demonstrate what needs to be done to preserve what makes Tumblr special.
And if you do nothing else, continue to do what you do now: reblog enthusiastically, support each other, and stay unhinged about your fandoms. I love you!
if you’re a new tumblr user from tiktok or IG or something and only like posts and dont reblog them yeah people will think you’re a bot and block you but you will also make this website actively worse. they want “algorithmic” users like you, served recommended posts through likes, not people who just follow each other and respond to the direct chronological feed. there is a reason this website is still better than the rest, even with all its problems, do not ruin this

Dear fellow hellsite users,
I'm encountering an issue where if I make a photo post it won't show up anywhere (except to followers), and yet for some reason, other formats are fine (i.e. text posts).
If you have this issue yourself, feel free to share your experience, and even if you don't (and I don't usually ask this) can you maybe reblog this in order maybe spread awareness to those who do have this issue so it can be resolved.
And if the @staff could lend a hand that would be great.
