Here in Las Vegas, the Winter Solstice will occur at 8:19 PM on Saturday, December 21. The Solstice is an astronomical event occurring when the earth’s North Pole reaches its furthermost tilt away from the Sun. The day marks the lowest possible maximum elevation of the sun. The shortest days & longest nights here in Las Vegas will occur from December 16th - 27th (daylight will only last for 7 hours & 42 minutes). The Winter Solstice is one of the very few holidays celebrated by cultures around the world since ancient times. As the sun rose lower and lower in the sky each day, we can only imagine what our Paleolithic ancestors may have believed as they observed the sky. While there is scant evidence that shows whether our Paleolithic or Mesolithic ancestors marked the Winter Solstice, we do have HUGE evidence that our Neolithic ancestors did. Stonehenge and Newgrange are but two examples. Because the marking of and celebrations of this one celestial event is so prolific, we have to believe it held great significance to all of our ancestors.
