Performer:
Claire Taubenhaus (Tiny Deaths) - Vocals and trax
One thing I tend to miss when seeing electronic-leaning music live is the human element. Sometimes the performer moves a bit and that helps. What was so great about Claire’s set on Tuesday is that she was as personable as a folk singer while creating some hip ass electro-pop. In fact, she tossed a few assumptions aside as far as expectations go. She has a stage presence that lets us know she should be up there, without it feeling like ego. Her songs were personal and full of emotion, but not so much that it felt like that kind of bleeding heart pop ballad where the audience feels like maybe they know too much. The sonic texture was washed out, but not distant. Despite the reverb, I didn’t feel Claire was trying to hide. Her on-the-fly vocal processing wasn’t distracting at all from her actual performance. It was all just damn tasteful. So happy to have her on the t.e.e. stage.

Performers:
Adam Svec - Improvised vocal melodies and lyrics
John Keston -Improvised Rhodes, Moog Synthesizer
Somehow, this duo pulled a feminine energy from the air. I’m not even sure what I mean. Maybe that it seemed emotionally vulnerable in a way that I often encounter when interacting with women. Just emotional, not on purpose. Adam’s voice always seems like silk to me. Tight weaved. No different for this performance. I kept forgetting he was making these words up on the spot, a good thing in my opinion. It’s also odd how little I noticed his vocal effects processor. Another good thing in my opinion.
I appreciated John’s rounded arpeggios. The sine wave leaning tone nicely balancing Adam’s texture. Not unlike the Rhodes he was also playing. Without the Rhodes I would have missed something. I found myself feeling grounded in mankind’s musical history when I focused on his Rhodes. It was very clear how skilled John is at his instrument, but thankfully without some kind of exhibition. Just seemed firmly in control. A very enjoyable evening of music.
