Percy and the Coaches

Seems kind of odd in hindsight how Percy covering the Ffarquhar line during the Sodor Strike in Troublesome Engines is barely covered with a single sentance, isn't it? So odd, indeed, that I decided to turn my wheels for another fic for the first time in ages! Enjoy~

Going back onto the main line, as he was specially sent for by The Fat Controller, was unexpected but something that Thomas was ready to roll with. Something about the Tender Engines having a strop and being rude to Edward?! What silly behaviour indeed! The very morning he was informed, he bustled down, but didn’t get to take in much information before the Controller himself was speaking with him, Edward, and a green Tank Engine who Thomas hadn’t seen before.

Thomas was quietly relieved that he wasn’t to go back to shunting, and wasn’t too worried about the task to pull trains on the mainline (where Edward would be in control of the opposite direction). It was no longer his heart’s desire, now he had his beloved Branch Line, but it was still a thrilling prospect. Which helped take the edge off his concern for his equally beloved Coaches, Annie and Clarabel. He wouldn’t be able to take them along with him, and in any case it would be better for his Branch Line to have his faithful coaches keeping their eyes on things. That meant that someone else would have to take them out on runs, and the someone else was the new Tank Engine he’d met that morning.

Thomas couldn’t quite trust another Tank Engine with Annie and Clarabel yet, and he wasn’t sure just why. Part of it was that the Green Engine was indeed brand-new to this railway, and didn’t know the first thing about Ffarquhar, but there was something else.

“He seems decent enough, I suppose. But I can’t tell if there’s much going on behind his eyes! He’s got this sort of face, how would Gordon put it– not that I think Gordon is right about whatever it is he’s blathering on about now! Just– oh! It’s so annoying, if The Fat Controller brought him in he must be sensible, but I can’t quite make the connection.”

His Fireman murmured suggestions while cooking a late breakfast on his shovel. Thomas didn’t know what some of them meant. 

“Retty-sense? What’s that all about?” he asked, distracted from the moods he was going through.

“My education is wasted on you,” Fireman sighed, before pausing to take a bite out of his runny egg sandwich. “Nevermind, Driver will tell me off if I put new ideas into your smokebox anyway.”

Driver and Clarabel’s Guard came back from the conversation at the station building, where it was established that Thomas’s footplate crew were to remain with their charming (and fussy) Engine. Both of them were very keen to assure him that both of his faithful coaches would be well looked after. Driver also hastened to get back on the footplate while Fireman was still cooking, before the shovel would be returned to its standard use.

Feeling a little better, Thomas again remembered the remark ‘Common Tank Engines’ and felt his fire burn a smidge hotter, and then a curious sound like alarm from his crew …and their rapidly blackening bacon.

In the whirlwind that had him successfully sold to this portly new owner, given a name, driven to the Railway and having another half-day to be refreshed in the basics by a nice local Engine, Percy was still quite abuzz in the thrill of it all.

Most of this was decidedly simple, of course. He’d been bought and sold and sent to many and various corners plenty of times before, and this little island being uncharted territory was the trickiest part. Well, and getting used to having a name now, but as long as there weren’t any other Percies then he should be fine.

A blue Tank Engine had appeared, seemingly one of the old guard of the island. He seemed confident, openly scoffing at the Big Engines and bustling off with his new assignment swiftly.

Well, except for one moment. Percy was having his coal and water topped up, as the Number One Engine was given a bit more detail than what Percy’s New Controller had initially offered. Number One’s face wouldn’t stop shifting between moods! It was almost funny to see, but Percy started to wonder what exactly had caused it. Oh dear! Maybe it was the island’s Coal! If that was the case, he’d probably start feeling peculiar before long, too!

Ah, but he was still new here, and it would look better not to make a fuss. And anyway, maybe that only had an effect when one had been on the island for quite a while. He needed to make a good impression, and he’d been tasked with running a branch line!

It may have occurred to Percy that it was a little odd to prioritise a branch line when the Main line was only having a single train in each direction at this time, but his wasn’t to reason why. They wanted him to run the line, so he’d be doing that with gusto.

The crew he’d been given did not appear to be old hands in this part of the island (honestly, they didn’t seem that old at all to Percy), but they swiftly adjusted to his cab and water and bunker needs, so that was enough for him. A Guard emerged from the Coach Who Had Brakes, and strode up to them.

To the crew, he said, “I’m sure you know enough about our Thomas to understand the gravity of this task.” They made affirmative sorts of noises.

To Percy, he said, “These coaches are very well mannered ladies, so be sure to treat them gently.”

“Oh, yes sir! Of course, sir!”

“Have you pulled many passenger trains before?”

“Oh, no sir! Barely any, sir! I’ve done all sorts but I’ve never even seen any coaches like this before, sir!”

His crew groaned. Was he supposed to say something different?

After a talk, where the Guard made several important notes and Percy’s new Driver became rather shorter in his replies and stiffer in pose, while his Fireman barely stopped smirking, they eventually broke apart to return to their respective spots.

A remark made in Percy’s cab was drowned out by the sound of coal being tossed into his fire. Ooh, he was eager to get going now!

He bustled over to meet the coaches. Their names were Annie and Clarabel, but only one of them could see him from this angle. He didn’t know which it was.

“Oh my, who might you be?” She asked.

“Where’s our Thomas?” Asked the other one.

“Good morning! My name is Percy, I’m here to run the Branch Line while your Engine helps out on the Main Line!” he beamed.

“Thomas, on the main line? Oh dear!”

“Oh goodness, I do hope he’ll be alright!”

They were coupled on, and Percy was again too awash in the excitement of this rare new situation to notice they hadn’t really paid much attention to him. His crew seemed to be operating a little slower than was needed, too, but the countryside line had plenty for Percy to look at.

Eventually they reached a junction that joined with the main line and had to wait. A blue engine rushed up, soon revealed to be the Tank Engine. When he caught sight of Percy, again his face shifted so suddenly it was quite comical, though this time the coaches behind Percy started to call out.

“Thomas!”

“Oh, Thomas! Hello!”

But Thomas (as his name seemed to be) couldn’t stop, instead whistling twice before disappearing down the line.

Percy was sitting idly, chortling to himself by remembering some of the silly behaviour of the Big Engines that Edward had told him. How the ringleader, Gordon, had had a jammed whistle once after being so stodgy about the etiquette, and that time his safety valve burst. What a joke! And there were less tales of the other two, but it did further prove to Percy, at least, how daft they all were. Strike indeed!

Whyever would Engines need to strike? Or humans, for that matter?

His crew were walking back towards him, not as content as he was here in the sun. There was an indistinct din in the distance, probably more people, but Percy hadn’t a clue what that lot were trying to say. He’d merely tuned it out ages ago, but it did seem to have redoubled around the same time his crew reappeared. How queer!

“Well, Percy, old boy–”

“Young, surely? He looks like a baby!”

“That confirms you ain’t polished him like you said, his builder’s plate is right there! He’s old as the hills!”

“Oh! No I’m not!!” Percy cried, nettled.

“Anyway. Well Percy, intermediate boy that you are, I hope you enjoyed your work on this Branch line–”

“Absolutely, sir! I have indeed!”

“Let me finish. Hope you enjoyed it as it looks like things will be back to normal soon. For a loose definition of Normal, anyhow.”

Percy’s face fell. “Oh sir, I won’t be going back to the Mainland, will I?”

“You dolt! You’ve got him upset now!”

“Oh, shove it. No, Percy, you’ll be the shunter at the big station, like you were that first day. THAT’s what I meant.”

“Oh, splendid, then!”

“Yeah, wonderful. But it’s something, ain’t it? Puts bread on the table.”

“Br…red? Why are you painting your table?”

“I’m still not convinced he’s not a newborn, ‘ere.”

Percy was too busy beaming, the Big Station was exciting a prospect. So many trucks to play with, the high glass canopy where light danced down, more coaches –oh, and he supposed more engines too. The same daft trio who’d caused all the mess? Well, they oughtn’t be too bothersome after this, making a fuss over nothing as he’d been told.

The two coaches he’d been pulling had been nice, but Percy did quietly wonder how long they were for this world, with how much that Guard had talked about pulling them gently and carefully. Hopefully the other rakes he’d assemble on the main line would take a playful bump or two… not too much, of course, Percy still had to profusely thank the Controller more for these exciting new tasks, and being sent back before then wouldn’t do.

The two tank engines didn’t get to swap stories with one another, their crews went on different rosters as relief shifts were shuffled and contracts were looked at again. Percy saw the blue Tank Engine looking much more Well, his face calmer than he’d ever seen it, and Thomas saw the green Tank Engine with flushed cheeks and a smile of gleeful anticipation. But it was fine, they weren’t likely to see each other so often they needed to take that much notice, did they?

“Annie! Clarabel!” Thomas beamed, not even hesitating before backing onto them to make their iconic Train.

“Thomas, are you quite alright?”

“Yes, you must be exhausted, on the main line like that, an Engine of your build?!”

“Ohh, don’t worry about me! I’ve been fretting over you two, did that green fellow treat you alright?”

“Oh yes, Percy was fine.”

“Percy was a very polite sort. Maybe a little slow and cautious.”

“O-ho? Too slow for your liking?”

The coaches fell into the comfortable, delightful pattern of quarreling with Thomas about his running too fast, and he chided them for being fussy old things. 

At the Big Station, Gordon watched from a siding, as Percy pushed a coach rake into the buffers. The coaches all made indignant sounds with the bump.

“If only little Thomas could see Sense,” he bemoaned. “But maybe this little green one is far cleverer than even I had accounted for. It seems he had restraint enough for those two to not have been converted into matchsticks. But I suppose that’s something to be grateful for…”

How to fix 'All Engines Go', an experimental concept:

I've been chatting with @british-hero about TTTE and time and time again AEG has shown up as the black sheep of the franchise (which I understand perfectly, some of the... Err... Choices are a LITTLE questionable at times, but at least it's not the worst of the worst of BWBA am I right?). From remaking specific characters to make them more "appealing to children", to relegating beloved characters to background only, AEG has rubbed old-time fans the wrong way because it's essentially just a reskinned Paw Patrol-type show.

While I haven't exactly grown up with the show, I can definitely see where Rogue is coming from when they twist their nose. And honestly I think I do have a very quick and simple fix for the show's universe. Or, at least Rogue seems to agree with my concept for remaking it:

It's a fairly simple fix but I think it honestly would have benefited the show a lot more if instead of changing characterizations, they just assigned the OG cast teacher positions, and brought in new engines to be the students.

It wouldn't have upset so many longtime fans, and it would have given newer generations a better taste of TTTE while also still having "kid characters" they can relate to.

Honestly the show has a very lovely art style, and aside from making the engines move in VERY BIZARRE ways, it's not badly animated. It's just a pity that Mattel doesn't seem to understand what the audience wants...

But yeah, those are my two cents on this whole thing.

I’m exploding about Stephen. I can’t name a most favorite character, but he, Mike, and Sir Robert Norramby are up there.

a short crappy essay about emily

The writing of girl characters in TTTE genuinely infuriates me. There’s a lot of girl characters who were done absolutely dirty, but it always comes back to Emily for me.

Emily had agency and attitude and purpose in S8-12 and it was erased in favor of a “hi. I’m nice. Im the girl character” nothing one-note personality. What do we know about post HiT era Emily? (And honestly, S7 Emily too. Her introduction is kind of weak in my opinion). She wants to help out. She’s safety oriented. She’s… I don’t know. You could replace her with Rosie or Rebecca or whoever in the cgi episodes where she’s driving the story, and nothing would change. I can’t name any major differences between Emily post-rewrite and Rosie in her entire tenure. Aside from how they’re introduced to Thomas and interact with him, really… which sucks. They don’t have major differences in characterizations outside interacting with a male lead. 

AND the worst part is that there are moments where you can SEE they were crafting bold, interesting girl characters and they were either completely sanitized or forgotten about. Molly has a very particular basis. It's not a flashy type where the engine’s basis is the center of the character’s entire personality/marketing/etc (Mighty Mac and Hank come to mind). It feels clear to me that Molly was going to be more important. And then… she wasn’t. She appeared like 3 times, said nearly nothing and never appeared again. I wish I lived in a world where Emily kept her bossy personality and had this contrasted by Molly’s shyness and timidity. 

In my perfect world, Emily is bossy and important, and has some complexes about not needing help or knowing more than others. She’s intelligent and rambunctious, feeling like she’s made for more than the fast express duties that she was designed for. She wants to be involved and get dirty. (Which is a sentiment that I think a lot of young girls can relate to!) Maybe this causes other engines to view her as childish, but we know it's because even if she’s an old design- she has youthful zeal. I think that's a compelling personality and character to make from a Stirling Single, rather than just making another “old wise sage” character (we’ve got plenty of those and in different flavors!) An old engine that's hard to register as “old” at all, though not like Edward, she reads like this because she’s childish and immature- Someone immature, but in a distinct flavor of immature than Percy or Gordon. This Emily has so much room to bounce off other characters, and she does. The way she acts in Respect for Gordon comes to mind. Emily’s bossiness brings a much needed shakeup to the monotony of seasons 8-12. 

In addition, big, snooty, important characters are a staple of TTTE, but it's an archetype almost exclusively reserved for male characters. You could make an argument that Daisy and Elizabeth support these, but I think they’re different (or underdeveloped) enough not to fit this. Emily is the exception here. I think it's why she’s remembered so well as the female TTTE character that immediately comes to mind. Emily could be great, and she was great.

On the mechanics of faces on vehicles and the importance of intent/will.

Merry Christmas from the past/future !I wanted to share an ADHD medication induced long-post inspired by the infamous mechanics of two-faced engines debate, which has existed since the dawn of the internet Thomas fandom.

This work was also inspired by the works of @mean-scarlet-deceiver and @joezworld, thank you for sharing your works with us and for being such inspirations !

(This is my first post on TTTE-blr, but I have lurked for many years and often assist with ideas for Carsons Video Workshop along with my own rarely (but hopefully soon to be) surfacing projects.)

As a note, I will be dividing the "types of sentient life" using the terms that vehicles use. Vehicles (unless they are particularly snooty) don't use the word "human", in their eyes: we are "people." "Vehicles" is used as a catch-all in this post (and by the universe's more bureaucratically-minded) but this term is generally rarely used in their everyday speech (vehicles like being specific), and they will generally specify themselves as Engines, Cars, Lorrys, Boats, etc.

In my mind the mechanics of faces in this world are a matter of intent (for the people) along with activity and will (for the vehicles themselves).

The faces being present in general im going to consider a type of "magic" or an unknown "spiritual" quantity, it was not intended when originally developing vehicles, but became the norm, a "happy accident".independently achieved by many engineers in the early industrial era (Trevithick, in particular, was especially excited. In the proper way of a gentleman at the time, of course). Vehicles without faces are rarer than those with. It is however sadly becoming more common that vehicles do not awaken with a personality, this is mostly in the motoring industry with Tesla in particular having a high failure rate in having any of their creations "come to life." (It seems the very universe wants to bring Mr. Musk down a peg, but I digress.)

Its something that happens without prompt, the faces look like they "fade" into existence the first time they're activated after assembly.

(This isnt an exact science either, some awaken before completion which makes a bit of a headache for those actually constructing them, see: Henry I, but his whole existence was a headache from the drawing stages.)

A vehicle is generally thought the specifc facets of their work once put into service but vehicles built with specific jobs or duties in mind almost seem to just _know the basics by default_ it seems the intent of the people bringing them to life is a huge factor on the mentality of a vehicle (which is probably a large reason why the diesels of the modernisation era are so toxic towards anything seen as "behind the times" but this can be and often is unlearned with time.)

The position of an engines face also isn't an exact science, its almost like "fate" in a way, it tends to wind up as suspiciously appropriate for the events that take place in a vehicles life. The appearences of their faces can also be influenced by the state of mind of the vehicle. Their developing personalities generally manifest overtime as facial hair, scars, wrinkles etc. (Vehicles dont get injured in the way people do. Much damage can be repaired without problem but mental scars and traumas can become visible as what would be recognised as a scar in the human sense while actual wounds and any tangible physical damage to the face is extremely rare.)

(The tangibility of vehicle faces will probably end up as a post by itself.)

How much a vehicles face displays age is down to personality, history, intent and circumstance also, this is why Sudrian vehicles especially tend to retain a youthful appearance even into their centuries, see: The bulk of the Skarloey engines and Edward while the likes of Iron Duke and Sodor's (The) Duke display features humans would associate with their equivalent age.

Now cases of vehicles with "multiple" faces are an enigma to us people but are not unusual in vehicle culture

The most common types of vehicles with "multiple" faces are those that can be driven from either end, your Tobys and most modern Diesels, much of the time the engine can "will" themselves to always operate from the side they're active in, their face fades out (like when an engines personality "dies" during scrapping, another post for the future.) and appears on the active end, but this is situational, it takes a level of practice and effort ! Diesel Locos (returning to the idea of manufacturing intent) generally have an easier time of this than other types like Garrats, Fairles or Trams. (Yes, fairles, Mighty-Mac (and Little Giant) are outliers, almost the engine equivalent of a DID system)

But this is also subject to curcumstance.

When it comes to Sodor for example BoCo and Bear can "switch" with little effort, while Toby who had access to either a turntable or a friend and or wife (Henrietta) to keep watch for most of his life, finds it takes considerably more effort, therefore only does it rarely. Derek's type also has mild difficulty performing "switches" but this is mostly seen as another in a long line of issues in the Class 17s, Derek has improved at this in his time on Sodor both with the modifications from Crovans Gate giving him more energy and practice .

Daisy is a law unto herself, she has the ability but she characteristically considers "switching" as a waste of effort therefore the "bad for my swerves" argument is often trumpeted and nobody has the energy to dispute her on it when there are many more important battles to be fought regarding what her "fitter" may or may not have said.

The Mountain Engines seem to be the only "traditional looking single cabbed vehicle" whos entire type are known to be able to perform switches, this is another result of manufacturing intent it seems, (and yet another miracle performed by the Sweeds when creating the rack railway system as we know it) and are able to "switch" to their active side with the same ease that most Diesel locos can.

When vehicles arent in active work or under strain they are able to perform what railway workmen on steam engines from the early days coined as a "Cleaning Fade." (this term was adopted for all sentient vehicles despite, the "cleaning" part being generally irrelevant for most types) the vehicle's face is willed to fade away to naught but a "ghostly" impression in order to give access to any doors or hatches placed beneath for the purposes of maintenance, their personalities are still active and aware and can still converse among people and their comrades, seeing their expressions in these instances takes concentration however (vehicles find it quite a bit easier than people do).

Hi! I'm wondering what drew you to the narrow gauge engines in particular and how you grew to love them! From a fellow narrow gauge fan <3

Let's begin from the beginning: I'm re-entering (gosh, is that even a word?) the fandom in October 2022. Y'all must know I have other interests other than TTTE, right? One of them was MBTI. Basically, one day I was scrolling through the Personality Data Base website to see the personality types of some characters from my childhood cartoons. Then I saw this on Peter Sam and Sir Handel's profiles:

(*btw, if you asking my opinion, No. I don't think Falcon is ENTJ. When the hell he show his Extroverted Thinking dominant thorough the show or book?*)

Since I was not really into TTTE when I was a kid, I was kind of surprised. Since when do they ever get called Stuart and Falcon? What episode? Because, tbh, I've just seen a little of the classic eras episode. They were never dubbed into Indonesian, so I never knew much of it when I was still a kid.

So, I hurried up to YouTube to see some of the episodes from classic eras. Mainly season 4 because, well, I heard the narrow gauge was introduced in season 4, and let me tell you, I just fell in love with everything in the season. The set, the warm vibes, how the characters interact with each other—they're just UVDTCIYQQFC- (*Shaking fist violently*).

Especially when I watched the Unlucky Tug's Sodor's Finest about Skarloey and learned how intertwined Skarloey is with a real-life railway, Talyllyn. His relationship with Rheneas is making me flutter. How sweet, from enemies to best friends, huh? Neat :) Or how Rheneas bravely saves the railway to parallel Dolgoch. His interaction with Skarloey in their youth is also gold. I mean, you can't tell me the: "No, thank you! You looks like a snail with that house on your back!" is not funny.

I also love how angsty and bittersweet Duke, Sir Handel, and Peter Sam's stories are. As someone who lost her loving grandpa at a young age, theyre kinda resonates with me (even though they get their happy ending while I don't). Duncan is borderline relatable and funny too. (It got better when I knew he actually swears too, even though it's just implied.)

So I fall deeper into it. Research them like crazy, get interested in Talyllyn too, listen to more of their RWS stories as audiobooks, and watch other seasons, but I always come back to season 4. Let's just say I made season 4 and the little engines home, and there's no better place than home :)

If I had to explain why I love Jerk Jock Redward as a concept, it would have to be for one very specific reason: That being that Edward and Gordon work as excellent parallels of each other.

When we're first introduced to Edward, he's presented to us as an experienced, wise and kind old mentor figure who not only knows his stuff but is always willing to lend a helpful buffer wherever it's needed. No strings attached.

In contrast, when we're introduced to Gordon, he is initially presented as inexperienced, too proud to back off, and often arrogant to those around him due to being considerably younger when he joins the Fat Controller's as of yet minuscule fleet of engines.

However as time goes on and Gordon grows older, wiser and learns plenty of lessons through both Edward's (and a few other engines's) occasional intervention, as well as through some very humbling experiences, we see Gordon reach the same kind of position Edward was in when Gordon came to Sodor.

This is (sadly) much more apparent in the Railway Series than it is in the TV adaptations, but it still gives one room to consider the following: How did Edward reach his kindly old mentor status in the first place, and was he always that gentle or was it something he learned to be through trials and tribulations of his own?

To err is to be human, and while the engines are clearly not human they are equally alive and fallible in the universe of TTTE, so I think Edward having been a bit of a jerk in his youth and growing out of it with time, would humanize him further and make his attitude all that much more worth of appreciation.

Changing for the better, despite past misdeeds, is something of a very positive lesson to impart on others. It means there's always time to make amends and do better, and that's the kind of message I feel like Edward would impart on others organically.
