But then- It wouldnt make sense considering HENDRICK HAS VILES OF GOLD DUST but I suppose it could've been gained around recent years and not like by the minute he was revived

QUICKSILVER: I mean both. North was foolish to even attempt to save her when so much of her had already been scrapped. He should have had a spine and stood up to his sister.

To engines of the LNER, I feel like this may be a sensitive topic but I am courious.

Was Edward Thompson such a bad character? I feel like we hear that Thompson rebuilds were considered bad but what was a locomotive perspective?

Also, was it really all his fault, I mean he was shoehorned in after Gresley's untimely end and basically had to work with a short budget to standardize locomotives in very need of repair and so the company would stay afloat.

QUICKSILVER: I will say this about Thompson. He was never wanted by the board of the LNER to be their CME. They offered it to several people before him including Bullied, I believe. Peppercorn was favoured to replace Gresley but Thompson used company politics to 'steal' the role.

He would constantly be at odds with our crews and people working under him hated him and often left his service. He constantly argued with people and did not take criticism from anyone else. Something you do not want in a leader, especially during a hard time such as a war.

You know that it's bad when the company board delays your projects continuously until you retire. What's especially bad is he went out of his way to find faults with Gresley's designs instead of improving them out of need. There's improving the designs of someone else and then there's callously going out of your way to destroy someone's work who you didn't agree with. As much as I dislike Great Northern, he never deserved to be rebuilt into something that ultimately destroyed him.

Yes, he had a short budget but with that budget, his designs often fell short. The standardisation was a good idea but it needed someone more competent to install it. Some of his engines performed well but let's just say, it wasn't just the engines who were glad to see him go.

So yes, he made a few good engines but yes he was. And the LNER board knew it and forced him to retire.

DR HENDRICK: Perhaps. It would definitely make sense. It still doesn’t explain why North would be so secretive of how he cured her.

QUICKSILVER: North has always been suspicious about it and Olivia was too young to remember anything.

PEONY: Maybe. But why does she have gold dust in her eyes? If she had Cold Iron she wouldn’t have any even if she were an engine. Humans aren’t supposed to be able to use it or absorb it.

QUICKSILVER: Perhaps it’s a side effect of sharing her body with Scotsman’s soul to save it from Mallard?

PEONY: But that’s weird too! Even the other Gold Wardens couldn’t do that! Remember what happened when the Southern Warden tried to save one of the Bulleid’s by trying to save his soul the same way? The Gold Dust poisoned him and killed him in days from heavy metal poisoning!

PEONY: This is all very strange. Ms Olivia is a strange human.

QUICKSILVER: North would know more about this. I am at a loss for an answer.

Whats Mallards relationship with Quicksilver like?

MALLARD: Didn’t really see much of her after she deemed me competent enough to be on my own and pull my own trains. But she was very stern yet very understanding. If I needed help I would go to her before I met Merlin. She was the Class leader of the A4s so I didn’t often bother her, she was always busy.

She was proud of me and my record though, I’m happy I made her proud. Her and North where the first engines I saw when I work up and I want nothing more than to make them proud.

Hello Quicksilver, you seem to know a lot about Olivia and her family. Did you know them in the past?

QUICKSILVER: Yes! I had the pleasure of teaching Olivia, Gordon and Griffin when they were children! I was their maths teacher, Olivia was very quiet and studious however could be outspoken if she didn’t agree with something. Gordon was a bragger and boisterous and Griffin was very much a snotty little prankster who caused nothing but trouble.

It was during this time that I was made aware of North’s quest to try and give Mallard back his soul. But after what happened with Polly, I did not have much contact with him.

To engines who know this topic, what exactly is a silver soul. Is it a memory of the engine and therefore not the actual individual or is it a piece of the engine that was imprinted and left behind.

Also what was the first instance of silver souls and have there been other tests?

QUICKSILVER: Well, honestly, even I'm not quite sure what the true details behind them are. We've tried and failed to create Silver Souls, it so seldomly works. We just don't know why certain engines can come back, like myself, while others can't. We have an idea that stronger willed ones can but that's about it.

Great Northern is the one who has all the research and is the one who understands it. He has researched this for almost 70 years. If anyone was able to answer your question it would be him but he's unfortunately not here.

Okay but Olivia was able to hold Scotsman's soul while he was 'killed' by Mallard. Woulnt she be able to do same for another engine like Polly? Like bring an engine back by giving it a body by being pregant?

QUICKSILVER: I-I- suppose that could happen but I find that highly unlikely! Regardless, I think that you’re just making wild guesses that don’t make sense!

QUICKSILVER: Humans cannot get the Cold Iron Sleep, don’t be ridiculous! And just because she decided to name her baby after Polly doesn’t mean they’re the same soul. How absurd! A human can’t birth a golden soul!

What are the rest of the A4s opinions on Mallard. Seems like Sir Nigel’s practically immune to his shenanigans, but what about the others?

I'll just go with the main ones plus Quicksilver who is a Queen the gets mentioned later in Golden Soul and Silver Fox who also pulled the Flying Scotsman.

SPENCER [Silver Link - 2509]: Hates Mallard. Mallard was constantly harassing him after beating his speed record. Avoids him when he can.

BITTERN [4464]: Hates him. Gives him the cold shoulder which is a big thing for Bittern. He's very much an extrovert who greets everyone [Only if you're a big engine though], even if he doesn't like someone or hates someone.

UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA [4488]: Pretty much the same as Sir Nigel. Does not give him the time of day and does not put up with him at all. She has very little patience as it is.

SIR NIGEL GRESLEY [4498]: Does not tolerate Mallard's attitude but is one of the few Mallard respects so he can at the very least have a civil conversation with the Blue Duck.

QUICKSILVER [2510]: Girlboss who saved many innocent lives during the war. She's the unofficial leader of the LNER A4s (usually goes to the oldest engine BUT Spencer is well Spencer) and is one of the few engines Mallard would avoid because she could be a mean bitch to you if you put a toe out of line.

SILVER FOX [2512]: Mallard was jealous of her because she got to pull the Flying Scotsman and so was the target of harassment from him. She hates him as she did nothing wrong and only tried to do her job.
