Welcome, Little Western (and Kani), to “When the Sun Shines on A New Hope”! While there were a couple less characters to work with compared to the Tidmouth Sheds Family, it was really fun coming up with designs for all of them! I think my most favorite would be Donald and Douglas, but honestly, I love just about all of them. 💚

Nonetheless, I can happily say that their ask box is officially open, as is their character bio page! So, feel free to drop on by to ask a question for any of them or the Tidmouth Shed Family!

The “When the Sun Shines on a New Hope” Ships (Belated Valentine’s Day special!)

Hello, hello, my dear friends! This is your hostess with the mostess, Miss Kani, and love is in the air (or at least, it was yesterday)! Hope you’re all doing well today.

So, to celebrate the belated occasion, I figured going ahead and explaining the ships thus far in When the Sun Shines on a New Hope! All of them will be displayed in the cut below. Now, let’s get started!

Edward Atkins and Henry Grennan

Probably the most established couple so far in this human AU. Edward is rather supportive and dedicated to Henry, while Henry does occasionally experience anxiety as a result of his previous accident with the Flying Kipper. Regardless, Henry does love his jobs and thanks to Edward, he is able to find some ways to cope if he ever feels distressed. Currently, Henry is deciding to move in with Edward at his home near the Tidmouth household.

Gordon Considine and Booker “BoCo” Williams

Both of them first met thanks to Edward, but they first interacted when Bill and Ben were being little shits menaces and trying to torment Gordon with riddles until BoCo decided to calm the twins down and save him. Ever since, Gordon had noticed that BoCo was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. Gordon does get easily flustered when BoCo decides to show him affection, but their relationship has grown to become something more thanks to Edward.

Toby and Henrietta Liechti

The old married couple of the Tidmouth household, who looks after Thomas, Percy, and Mavis. Similar to Henry and Edward, they both follow a supportive and loving relationship (with one person experiencing anxiety). As wise as Toby is, he does experience a few hiccups due to overthinking and difficulty with adapting. As a result, Henrietta is always there by his side in order to support her husband and make sure he feels safe.

Oliver Greenwell and Lucian “Toad” Hargrave

Toad is the ray of sunshine to Oliver’s stormy days. Both of them were childhood friends that grew up in the same village, and even when they had faced danger and even near death/“scrap”, Oliver vowed to do what he could to protect Toad. Both of them have received their own respective scars (especially Oliver), but their close friendship eventually blossomed into a romance. While Oliver does sometimes get busy with detective work, he does what he can to make time for Toad and even enjoys some of his hobbies with him, such as visiting the aquarium and looking at whales.

Donald McIntosh and Kani Okimoto

An opposites attract deal. Donald is a charming jokester who can be rather protective if need be (especially when it concerns his brother Douglas and the other Little Western Squad members), while Kani is a devoted young lady who is able to perform her tasks with ease but becomes easily flustered when she messes up the smallest things. She… sometimes gets Donald and Douglas mixed up with each other, but Donald is rather patient and knows she’s doing her best.

Skarloey and Rheneas Llywelyn

The old married couple in the Skarloey Mansion, and the adoptive parents of Rusty, Duncan, and Luke. They were both close friends since childhood, and their relationship only grew. Even when Rheneas was sent away to recover, Skarloey never stopped waiting for his partner to return. So, when Rheneas did return, they both decided to get married and settle down. Both are rather protective of the members under their household, and they never fail to do what they can to support the kiddos’ learning and give advice whenever needed.

And finally…

Luke O’ Glaisnigh and Millie Jeanne Violette

The Princess and the Pauper, if they were a couple. Luke is rather timid, especially since he had just received closure after the entire Blue Mountain Mystery episode, and he would much rather spend his days in a forest surrounded by deer whenever he is done with his work. Meanwhile, Millie is a princess and the determined, prim, and free-spirited adopted daughter/granddaughter of Stephen. Both of them balance out each other nicely, and they exude a rather wholesome passion towards each other.

Update! (Plus a Sneak Peek)

Hello, hello, my dear friends! This is Miss Kani, and I am excited to give an announcement! The character bios for the Tidmouth Sheds Family are officially updated, which means that their ask box is officially open! So, feel free to go ahead and send in some of your questions while I work on adding more characters into the roster! 💙

On another note, the sneak peek is actually going to be an interesting one! See, back then a few years ago, I made a brakevan character that was based on my username, and I have officially decided to bring her back as a character in this human AU! She’ll also be among the roster of characters that can receive asks, so be on the lookout! In the meantime, I’ve doodled up some small things relating to her. She’s a really sweet girl who gets easily flustered, but nonetheless, she’s pretty capable at her job!

These are all just pen doodles for now, but I’ll definitely be able to draw her with color! I didn’t really base her design off of a specific style, but she just really likes skirts and the combination of cute and fancy but also comfortable. So yeah, that’s all I got to give for the sneak peek!

Doodle Compilation!

Hello, hello, my dear friends, and welcome back to When the Sun Shines on a New Hope! This time, I decided to go ahead and draw some random pencil doodles because I was bored. So, I’ll go ahead and explain the context of each as best as I can, from top to bottom and left to right!

The context:

- Pretty soon, Donald is going to be a father. Stay tuned in the springtime when things get revealed!

- Duck’s… wide mischievous smirk expression. Cue concerned Edward in the corner.

- 57647 Douglas dressed as a girl in relation to this ask post (further context is there):

- Just a simple doodle of Rheneas.

- Toad being an absolute cinnamon roll with his love for whale plushies.

- James being smug af.

- Mavis (who I will be introducing later on)! She’s an extended member of the Tidmouth family, since Toby and Henrietta adopted her.

- An inside joke with friends based on the song “Donald, Where’s Your Troosers?”, where Donald is shipped with Kani. Kani is smol but easily flustered and a bit uptight, while Donald is taller and definitely a lot more relaxed. But hey, gotta love dynamics, amirite?

It took a while since I was at home for a few weeks and only had Douglas, but now that I’m back in my apartment for this year, I’ve officially reunited him with Donald!

So rejoice! There will be more content featuring these two between posts. 🖤🖤

Introduction

“Good day to you. May the skies shine brightly in your favor. The sun will shine on a new hope for everyone today.”

Lately, I’ve been delving into drawing human interpretations for the engines in Thomas the Tank Engine thanks to some memories with good friends that have inspired me to look back just this once. Since Edward has been my favorite character in this series, he is the first engine I decided to draw out a humanized interpretation for. I’ve decided that I want to try out different outfit styles for each character, and for Edward, I was inspired by some steampunk-esque aesthetics. Of course, he’s got his glasses, and the book he holds contains vital information on patients he comes across or even other things such as advice to give to youngsters or even stuff relating to parenting. Basically, it’s his Holy Grail of sorts.

Now, onto other introduction notes:

Hello, and welcome to this new blog I’m now starting! This is your hostess running the blog, Miss Kani, and thank you for stopping by to read this! “When the Sun Shines on a New Hope” will be an art and ask-related blog for a human AU for Thomas the Tank Engine, which features the goodest No. 2 blue boi Edward as he muses on happenings throughout Sodor as a man who devoted his life to childcare and psychology.

This blog will feature interpretations of characters from Tidmouth Sheds (prior to Season 22), the Little Western, and the Skarloey Railway, and they will be updated as time passes in this blog. As a result, people are free to ask questions about the characters or directly to them. Needless to say, I am quite excited with starting this project, and I hope you’ll find some aspects of this human AU interesting!

A Small Thank You!

Finally, I think the technological issues have been fixed on my end. Which means I can now finally say this message!

Hello, hello, my dear friends! It’s Miss Kani, and I know it’s almost been 3 weeks since I made this blog, but I just wanted to take some time out of my day to say thank you to everyone who’s given warm welcomes, stopped by to visit, followed this blog, or even left some notes and questions!

It is such a joy answering questions and sharing some concept art here for the characters relating to my human AU (and there will be one more batch of characters to be released down the line, so be on the lookout for that!), and I cannot wait to do more for this blog in the future!

So, to celebrate, I ended up drawing some Oliver, since I’ve been in quite the Little Western mood lately. 💚

As a thanks from me to you, feel free to drop in some humanized Thomas character designs for me to draw aside from any questions if you have any! I’d be happy to see the various designs, and I certainly don’t mind challenging myself a bit.

Toad Sketches

Hello, hello, my dear friends, and welcome back to “When the Sun Shines on a New Hope”! Today in the concept shed where I just draw random sketches and concepts of characters in the human AU, I decided to whip up some sketches of Toad, who is just such a cinnamon roll. He’s polite, likes singing, even saved a whale… what’s not to love? :D

So, when coming up with designs for my humanized Toad, I thought it would be kinda cute to make him wear an outfit inspired by a butler of sorts, since he’s a really polite little guy who refers to everyone as “Mister” or “Miss”. The cloak is there for cuteness points since he loves to be cozy.

At first, I wasn’t too sure what to do with him having lamps, but I eventually came up with a solution where he just does carry them around (plus he does eventually give one of them away). Other accessories such as the ribbon he wears around his neck and his whale plushie are gifts from his best friend Oliver. When the Little Western found out about Toad’s ribbon, they all decided to make a system where their ribbons match Toad on a certain day depending on who he accompanies (usually, he’s seen with either Oliver or Douglas). Also fun fact that the whale plushie is now a thing after he decided to find a plan to save a whale.

Oh yeah, in case anyone was wondering about the extent of Oliver and Toad’s relationship in this human AU, they are an item. They’ve been best friends ever since they were children, and that ended up extending into the present days of the AU. While Oliver can be busy due to his novice detective work, Toad absolutely does what he can to keep himself busy and wait for Oliver’s eventual return at the end of the day. Sometimes, Oliver even lets Toad tag along on some of his investigations, since Toad can pick up some hard-to-notice details that would be crucial for a case. Overall, Toad is just an adorable ball of sunshine. 🖤

DUCK! … And Cover (Little Western Sneak Peek!)

Hello, hello, my dear friends! This is Miss Kani, and I am back with a bit of an update! I am finally back home for winter holiday, which means more opportunities for some art! Hooray!

Currently, I am still working on the character bios for the Little Western, but for fun, I figured sharing what I have so far with Duck. Duck is a bit of an interesting fella, since excluding Toad and Kani, he’s the shortest of the bunch. Also he’s a huge stickler for the rules.

I actually have all of the Little Western’s humanized designs (…. Except for Kani. Whoops-) done, so this is basically a sneak peek of the entire finished Little Western roster. Down below is an old concept of Duck since his outfit actually used to be much different and how I decided to revamp it.

I’m gonna be honest: I was kinda a bit stumped when it came to Duck. Right away, I knew what to do for the Scottish twins, Oliver, and Toad, but Montague over here was a little complicated. So, I decided to do some random searching, and eventually, I settled on his design being based on a constable from the 1900s, since he’s all about the Great Western Way and the rules (… my human AU does not follow a specific time period at all. XD)

As for the “tried to fit in” arrow in the concept, everyone on the Little Western has a ribbon to identify themselves and also so Toad could match with who he goes with for the day (eg. A red ribbon if he’s following Douglas, a green ribbon if Toad is accompanying Duck). Thing is, Duck doesn’t really have any ribbon of his own to fit in the squad with, so he found some old green cloth and wrapped it around to make a makeshift armband. At least there’s that.

Update Post! (Plus A Something)

Hello, hello, my dear friends! This is Miss Kani, and I just want to say that posts relating to When the Sun Shines on a New Hope are currently still in progress! I have a lot of things I want to accomplish before the year ends, and I will do what I can! So, stay tuned for that!

As for any crazy shenanigans related to Thomas, I was able to get ahold of an ERTL diecast model of Douglas from back in 1992 thanks to the interwebs and my boyfriend. I did also get Donald, but currently, I’m waiting until January to reunite the two.

So, for now, I’ll just share some images I took of Douglas for the fun of it! This has been Miss Kani, and see you all soon when the sun shines on a new hope! Enjoy the small photo compilation ❤️

I’m quite surprised at how mostly intact the guy is! I really cannot wait to reunite the two when I go back to university for the winter quarter.

His main resting place in my desk at home for now. I know my desk is cluttered as all hecc, but I usually like to keep him near my glasses case.

It does get cold in the evening, so I absolutely do what I must to get him warmed up (courtesy of some red and black plaid shirts I have lying around). ❤️
