Her eyes feel large and wide in her head as she keeps them on Kit. She waits, waits for Kit to explain. She doesn’t have to explain. But it’s Kit. Kit always talks to her, even if Jade sometimes has to wade through babble to figure out what she’s actually trying to say.

But there isn’t even babble for her to sift her way through.

Instead, Kit breathes heavy, her body is in the same position it had fallen to on the mattress as Jade had pulled away from her. Which is when Jade realizes that Kit is hyperventilating. 

“Kit,” she calls out. “You need to sit up. You’re not able to breathe properly like that.” She wants to rush to her side, lift her up and place a reassuring hand on her back as she coaches her through the timed breathing that has always worked in the past when Kit was in the middle of a panic attack.

But she’s naked, and Kit just called canyon maze. She called their safe word. The word that ends their friends with benefits relationship full stop.

No questions asked.

“Kit,” Jade pleads, “Please just sit up.”

Jade expects the tears to come.

But they never do.

Because she should have known. She knew it was inevitable.

Jade’s words reverberate in Kit’s head over and over again. She digs the heels of her hands into her eyes as she paces back and forth around her living room. “Speaking of speeches,” another voice interrupts. It’s Elora in an ethereal, white sparkling gown, just silvery enough to not look bridal. She pulls Kit off of Jade and pulls at one of the lapels of her jacket. “You left your speech in the hotel, dumbass.”

“What would I do without you?” Kit croons.

“Yeah, yeah.” Elora says. “Anyway, I kind of ditched Graydon when I saw…well, I had an excuse to come and find you. I should go find him again. And if I don’t see you before, good luck! Whether you win or lose, you’re my favorite actress, and don’t tell Airk, but also my favorite Tanthalos!” She gives Kit a long, drawn out hug and runs off faster than a normal person in heels should be able to.

“Holy crap,” Lili says once Elora had left. “I don’t think I’d ever seen her in person, but I can’t believe I didn’t put it together before. I mean, Elora isn’t exactly a common name.”

Kit’s hand is back at Jade’s back and they share a look. “She’s the best publicist for a reason,” Kit smiles, offering the simplest of explanations and leaving it at that.

"Do you want to go down to the pub?" Lili asks, not bothering to knock as she enters Kit's trailer. They've both finished filming for the day and finally washed up. The scene they'd been filming the past two days involved the both of them covered in mud, and it was an adventure each evening to wash it all away.

"Yeah," Kit nods.

"Birthday drinks on me," Lili says. She sidles up alongside her co-star and places a hand on her hip, letting her thumb brush under the hem of Kit's shirt. "Then after, maybe some other birthday activities."

"I'd be very down for that," Kit smirks. She mirrors Lili's position, just a bit more brazen, with her hand fully under Lili's shirt, running up her bare side. "Or we could do activities first, drinks later. I just have to be done by eleven."

Lili glances over Kit's shoulder to see a massive arrangement of flowers, all pinks, and oranges. She recognizes carnations and roses but can't name any of the other flowers. "Those are pretty," she says.

"Birthday flowers from Jade," Kit says, a soft almost vulnerable smile spreading across her face. The same one Lili has notices Kit falls into whenever she mentions her childhood best friend. Kit reaches out to gently caress the flowers. "Aren't they beautiful?"

Lili has suspected for a while that Kit, dumb as two rocks when it comes to her emotions, was in love with her best friend. Lili had had a sneaking suspicion that the sentiment was returned. After all, she'd been around long enough to witness the two constantly texting back and forth or FaceTiming with the simple intent to hear each other's voices, see each other's faces.

But Lili didn't know Jade. Though she suspected Jade returned the sentiment, it wasn't until she saw the flowers that Lili realized how hopelessly perfect the two useless lesbians were for each other. It was just a shame they hadn't seemed to realize it yet.

"Let's start with birthday drinks," Lili says, returning to the conversation at hand. "I think Mims and the rest of the cast want to celebrate your birthday. We can work in our activities later. Gotta make sure you're around for your birthday FaceTime with Jade."

"Sounds like a plan," Kit nods. "But seeing that it's my birthday, I've got some plans up my sleeve for activities later." She waggles her eyebrows. She doesn't even register the fact that Lili had known, guessed, that her 11pm deadline was a FaceTime date with Jade.

The words had nearly spilled out of her with every shared look, hand squeeze, and kiss the following day as Jade had dragged Kit from exhibit to exhibit. But she’d restrained, as much as it had pained her to do so.

She was going to tell Jade. God, she was going to tell Jade. But she was going to do it in a way that was special. She was going to plan something. She had planned something. Something special to the both of them.

Kit is going to tell Jade that she is in love with her. Tomorrow. She will enjoy tonight’s premiere, then tomorrow, she will tell Jade.

It’s all Jade has ever wanted. The two of them in their own little world, no one around to bother them, Kit happy, dimple in all its glory, face flushed, chest heaving, hands still shaking as they grasp Jade’s wrists. Jade’s knees bracketing Kit’s hips. Jade is so in love with the girl lying below her. The girl who is both the knife to her heart and the healing salve.

“Let me take you out tonight,” Jade says, breathless herself. “I want to celebrate you.”

Beside her, Jade stretches, and Kit nuzzles forward, burying her head into her girlfriend’s neck and wrapping her arms around her waist.

“Morning,” Jade says, her voice gravelly with sleep. She places a kiss on top of Kit’s messy hair. “I can’t believe we have all morning to ourselves before we have to be on set.”

“It’s amazing,” Kit moans in agreement.

“What should we do with our extra few hours?”

“Hmm,” Kit pulls away from her favorite nuzzling spot and looks up at the ethereal beauty she calls Jade. She pecks Jade’s lips, morning breath be damned, and says with a smirk, “I have an idea.” The peck then turns into a longer, deeper kiss.

I am nothing if not predictable. Except when I throw in a random snippet for seemingly no reason. Like now.

She keeps her tone light and playful and far from the hopeful tone that would escape if she weren’t so focused on her own self-preservation. Since the moment she saw Kit with that goddamn bouquet of roses, her heart has been racing with the possibility - the hope - of this being something more. Of Kit feeling the thing that’s been between them since their first day of freshman year. That thing that seems to have grown in the past month that they’ve been fake dating.

Kit Tanthalos was spotted Monday in Central Park nursing what had to have been a beer just shortly after photos were released of girlfriend Jade Claymore in a heated argument on the phone. It seems like trouble in paradise for the couple who spent 10 months hiding their relationship before Tanthalos ‘accidentally’ posted a revealing photo of her girlfriend to Instagram. Could it be the publicity that caused the argument or the fact that Kit was particularly loose-lipped on Watch What Happens Live on Sunday night? Better yet, does it have to do with the fact that Tanthalos and Princess Taramis co-star Lili Cashmere are currently on a press tour together and looking particularly cozy? Whatever caused the break-up appears to be short-lived though, as both Kit and Jade - coined Tanthamore by our Twitter followers - were spotted together outside of LAX Tuesday afternoon. The two seemed to pay no heed to their surroundings as they engaged in a heated make-out session. Perhaps love isn’t dead after all.

“Hey,” Jade says, taking long, quick strides across the carpet. She pulls Kit’s arms out of their folded position and runs her hands down Kit’s bare sides, setting a cascade of goosebumps rippling all over Kit’s skin. “You did this for me?” Her eyes aren’t on Kit’s body anymore, instead boring into Kit’s own wide blue eyes.
